I have returned from E3!

The Spoony One | Jun 18 2010 | more notation(s) |

And I am almost completely destroyed by the experience; three days of nonstop interviews and gaming with no time for food and less time for sleep! You’ll be seeing a ton of footage and nonsensical screaming rants from the expo floor soon, but for now I need to rest and pull about 18 hours of footage onto my PC in the meantime. My escape from LA has left me with ravaged ankles and a splitting headache, but I’ll be working hard to get my insane E3 ramblings posted as soon as possible.

For now, rest assured that I saw almost everything you wanted to see, and I’ll be happy to answer questions about them when I have time. Big winners of the show for me were Eidos-Montreal’s Deus Ex 3: Human Revolution, Sega’s Shogun 2 Total War, Bioware’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, 2K’s Civilization V, and the talk of the show, the Nintendo 3DS.

Huge failures? Well, you’ll hear all about those soon, believe me. Oh, the anger is coming. Sonic? Bethesda? XCOM? There will be blood.

Sonic 4 or that other crappy one for the Wii?

    • http://twitter.com/AbridgedBrit Blank

I actually think the Wii one looks better. It looks to me like the good parts of Unleashed combined with some Mario-esc power ups. Sonic 4 to me looks like a crap knock off of the originals, it looks slow to me and the fact that its episodic really puts me off. We will see which one Spoony is talking about, or perhaps he will be ranting at previous games to sonic team rather than new games.

nice to see someone saw the new Deus Ex in a good light, you should see the fan base on the offical forum

I'm glad to hear you were able to make it home this evening. Leaving E3 was worse than usual this year with the Lakers game happening at the same time. I'm also glad to hear you were able to see the 3DS even with the extremely long line on the last day. I have to say it really was spectacular.

Oh and next year you should get tickets to Video Games Live, I went tonight and it's totally worth it.

Bethesda is among your top offenders? That can't be good, I was looking forwards to New Vegas…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=515500505 Alan DeHaan

As I said above…New Vegas is actually Obsidian, not Bethesda. So either Spoony’s anger is mis-targeted, or it’s not New Vegas.

Please don't focus too much on Nintendo, everyone talks about them. Tell us more about the smaller companies and such. I'd love to hear what you think about Kinect, all fitness games (the breathing game in particular) and all of this 3D hype. By the way, I hope you got an Interview with Jessica Chobot like I requested! ;)

So who won in chess, you or the guy who you may have lost your soul to?

  • Dark_Xzeon

Hey Spoony, I have been watching your videos forever, and your awesome. But, Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors, look to be the only good Sonic games we have seen on a home console since Sonic Adventure One.

Also, did you see James the AVGN there? That would be cool if you did.

    • Anonymous

Yes, he did; I saw it on his Twitter feed about halfway through his E3 trip.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brian-Kenny/1455977168 Brian Kenny

Feels a bit early in production to already have something substantial to show for Mass Effect 3. SO.. I guess we will have to settle for Old Republic :)

  • Masamune

Escape from LA? calm down Snake Plisken, you make it sound as if E3 was a bad thing! well i would be upset too if i had a chance to meet James “The Nerd” and didnt capitolize on it!!

  • Kagato

Sonic? I'll be curious to see what you say. Some “hands-on” videos seem to praise Sonic Colors at least, saying it's all Sonic Unleashed-style Daytime levels, which is a good thing in my book.

I did about a near 2-hour audio log for the website I came from regarding my thoughts on the press conferences. I believe Microsoft and Ubisoft really blew it this year. I wont go into too many details but I will be curious to see what you say about it as well as Angry Joe. I wonder how different our opinions will be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sami-Takala/753049917 Sami Takala

I've followed Deus Ex – Human Revolution vigorously through it's development and it's a shame they didn't release more info to the public on E3, a place meant for big announcements. It's also a shame they (Eidos Montreal) released the new trailer BEFORE E3. Making it near impossible to expect anything else than them releasing something new for the public during E3. But nope, we got nada.

Although those actually able to go to E3 got to see some DXHR gameplay so I'd love to know if you saw any of it. I'd kill to see some of that. =P

Based on the videos James Rolfe has made, I can imagine the exhaustion, due to the huge lines and such. I look forward to see what you think of the new Total War game :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mattias-Granlund/100000618693819 Mattias Granlund

Square has nothing to do with the game them self, the only thing they done so far is animated the trailers, that´s why there name comes up and no other reason.

  • http://nightshademyu.livejournal.com/ AngelMyu

Glad your back! Can't wait to see the footage! :D

  • FR MadCow

Yeah, I definitely can understand the ravaged ankles (my feet always took a beating at conventions I have attended), so as other people have already mentioned get some well-deserved rest and post your E3 bonanza when you're good and ready. And in regards to the anger towards Bethesda, I know my friend was disappointed seeing that Bethesda only seems to seen publishing other developers' games and not working on the game he's looking forward to: Elder Scrolls V.

  • ShadeFawks

huh…. next sonic game among the failures? I thought Sonic4 was looking promising o.o…

But yeah get some sleep oh mighty courier of the E3 knowledge. And I look forward to your opinions and comments as always :D

I can imagine the thing being very tiring, but I'm sure it was fun in a way, no?

I'll be looking forward to the videos.

(Bad stuff about Sonic? I've seen a short screwattack video on Sonic colors, and it looked pretty good. Then agan, it might just be a part of the Sonic cycle….)

  • Kuncoss

Like all the others, I am really looking forward to seeing the footage and to hear you perspective of the whole event, of course :-)

Maybe you could do a live stream with the sole purpose to answering questions about E3? By being able to choose questions in real time and answering as many you want. Then post it on the blip and the website for anyone to watch when they want and can.

Sweet, good news for TOR, its another that their forums are ravaged with upset people because they did not give enough information.

Also, I'm one of the few that does not want you to tear up Kinect, I'd rather you give us your take on Sony's wiim… I mean Move.

  • Pryopizm

Epic Mickey. I must know if painting and thinning is all it's cracked up to be. It sounds like Kingdom Hearts and Super Mario Sunshine combined in a hallucinogenic nightmare. Oooh, Nightmare Land, that'd be a cool addition to Disneyland/world.

  • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael "Skitch" Schiciano

I also think it has to do with them owning Eidos, y'know. ;)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mattias-Granlund/100000618693819 Mattias Granlund

true, but that still doesn´t mean there producing it and that´s the main point.

      • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael “Skitch” Schiciano

Oh, absolutely. They’re acting as probably executive producers (ie. funding it), and I think they are doing cutscenes, as you noted, but the game is being developed by Eidos Montreal, so people shouldn’t worry too much about Square’s influence.

In fact I hope you give it its own rant video!

Great to hear you're back Spoony.

Civilization 5 is a winner. Yeah!!!!

    Xcom is a failure.No!!!!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/DLCCBURDNPIB75YXSFCJAJQLWY MichaelS

Yeah… but, I still have hope for New Vegas and a possible Elder Scrolls V. Guess I'll have to see what Spoony saw.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/Z6X2E7TZRANNVKCTNNQB5FR72E Ryan

I can understand XCOM, even though they've shown very little of the game, there could be more enemies besides the oil spill things, I've recently been told it takes place when the organization is just forming so you're still working for XCOM not the FBI as previously thought, but they haven't done much to address or alleviate those fears so I get the anger. Still it's slated for 2011 there could be changes in store that fix the problems. Hell they could even add in the hyphen. In any case, I totally get where people are coming from with this game and the fears sparked up about it. Still I'm willing to wait awhile and learn more, perhaps the various problems people have brought up will be addressed.

I don't get why Bethseda is there though, I saw the Rage demo and that looked like a pretty kick ass game, especially for the fact it's running on consoles with that quality and framerate. Is it because most of the games are being developed by other companies? Obsidian is doing New V egas, Id's doing Rage, if thats the case I guess that can be a little lame. But I don't think Bethseda is taking credit for making those games, unless they are then that's a big problem. Still, the developing companies ARE getting mentioned at the stage demos I've seen. Meh whatever, I'll just wait and see what Spoony's issues are.

I hope you got video of the XCOM demo, I've been looking everywhere for it and I can't find it.

  • http://twitter.com/dmyy20 Dana Stemo

As excited I am to see your recommendations and all the great stuff you saw on the floor, I am very excited for these rants on the games that you thought failed hehe Sounds like E3 was a blast, but insane….which makes great videos for us to watch :]

Can't wait to watch them! (but I can wait….I'm not going to be the impatient fan asking “where's the new video?”) heh

  • Ebonwing

Well, I guess it's good news for Portal 2 that you aren't ranting about it, but then again you aren't really excited for it either so I'll just have to wait and see. Also, there is ANOTHER Sonic game on the horizon??? Hasn't the poor guy been through enough? I mean ever since he left the Dreamcast, Sonic has gone straight into the toilet. So leave the poor guy alone and let him retire.

Anyway, hope you recover soon and hope you didn't catch the Con Crud.

  • MadClawMannn

    Hey Spoony,
I want to know what you think about the PS3 move and Xbox360 Kinect. I person think both of they are a waste of time (I'm in my late 20s). The 3DS, I heard it's good.

  • http://www.klkerr.com/ Penrefe

Yeah, I had a feeling Bethesda was going to drop the ball on this E3. Everyone was getting all excited about a possible TES V but they probably just showed more crap about their half-assed FPS's. Oh well, maybe next time.

  • goodguya

Hope you can get yourself re-energized Spoony ma boy. We need to hear from you! If you have stuff to say about the Old Republic, I'll gladly hear it. I've been iffy on it, but it's looking better and better near release.

Ecstatic to hear that Deus Ex 3 has promise.

Wonder why Bethesda earned your scorn. I was hoping for an Elder Scrolls V announcement, which obviously never came. Nothing they had looked interesting to me.

  • http://www.gamespot.com/users/cornbredx CornBRED-X

Ya, XCOM looks awful. I'm interested to hear what you have to say about all the games you saw. Looking forward to it.

Take your time though, no need to kill yourself with to much work =P

  • http://www.boredomsedge.com ObieWanCoyote

Poor Spoony, welcome to my world… Let this serve as a warning to you about the evils of childbearing =p.

  • DetectiveGumshoe

Please tell me New Vegas isn't just something someone could make with the G.E.C.K… Deus Ex 3 better be the final gap between a real RPG and FPS experience (BORDERLANDS DOES. NOT. COUNT.). Shogun 2 is something I have been hoping for since my nitpicky side got the best of me, But I did enjoy Napoleon and Medieval 2!

As for XCOM… Bioshock with aliens and Sludge, tooooottaaallly ooorriiignnall riiiggghtt 2k?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Peter-Davidson/1226257656 Peter Davidson

XCOM… Thank god a higher power of the internets agrees with me. An FPS? Are they for real? At least with C&C Renegade it was faithful to the series… but XCOM in the 50s? XCOM with BP Aliens? Its BioShock with a new skin.
    Fuck you 2K.

  • vidit1

yeah sorry about downtown La the Lakers were in game 7 of the finals there and after the shit that happened last year when they were not even in the state when they won we did not want to take more chances. then there was that film festival so normally you would only have had twice as much traffic in each direction with no cops insight telling you to go 3 miles away from where you want to be as a detour.

  • vidit1

Also you would have made the flight had you done these two things.
1: not taken a cab, what the fuck were you thinking with that one?
2.Had some one who lives in LA to keep you in line during your stay

  • http://www.saisasylum.com/ Sai

Bethesda? >>; I hope that's not an ill omen for New Vegas.

I dunno about the 3DS, it seems to me people don't hold handhelds perfectly still at a precise angle and distance from their head. When I mentioned this on Kotaku people said “well, you can turn the 3D OFF”, which made me wonder why have it has your primary gimmick and namesake at all then. I'm just getting Virtual Boy vibes over here.

  • Bosh_Depanzer

Deus Ex 3 for the win! It sounds like it's going to be a prequel but you never know with that series.

  • http://www.facebook.com/darcy.macdonald1 Darcy MacDonald

  • bloodhowl

Oh! Shogun 2: Total War?! I am really looking forward to know what they are doing with it. :D

  • zenithl

Judging from the “goggle-less” types of 3D screens I have experienced, you don't have stay awfully still while viewing as long as you can “focus” on the 3D. Some people can do it better the others though. I suspect Spoony would have his migraine problem if he play this on a car or something.

Let's just forget Virtual Boy for a second there. XD

  • zenithl

Didn't an X-Com FPS already got canned once? Why “reboot” it if you are not going to make it a strategy game? (Especially when the UFO:AM series is not very good….)

“Though it will be a first-person shooter, they said they will try to keep some main concepts from the original game, such as Elerium. “

Oh. WOW. Elerium. I am so blown away.

  • http://twitter.com/DyloniusFunk Dylan Stalnaker

I was watching the Sony presentation on LordKat's Ustream and all i could think off if if you and Joe were in the audeince just trying your hardest to hold your tounge and not just bitch slap some of these stupid corporate dbags who kept coming on stage. A lot of people were hoping Insano would just run up on stage and do something.

As for LA i think the big issues was that you were leaveing LA right as the city was firing up for NBA Game 7. That probably didn't help matters. But i'm glad to see you made it back in one piece and look forward to upcoming videos.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Siddle/1817380050 Jason Siddle

Possobly the lack of TES:5 thats whats annoyed me. F:NV looks too similar to Fallout 3 for my liking, not saying it doesn't look good, but it doesn't seem to have improved a lot. Especially in the animation department.

Also waiting to see AngryJoe's experience on E3.

  • saint23thomas

At this point, I think the Sonic team is running an experiment to see how stupid a game can be while still making money.

    P.S. Get well soon, Spoony.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Kolpack/100001045016285 Jeff Kolpack

I'm really interested to see all your thouhts and footage of E3 but i can't understand how you could possibly be upset with the sonic Game. It's plain and simply Sonic 4! and it looks really good so far minus the episodic way their distributing it of course. Now i'm worried they ruined another Sonic game….Oh and Now that you have Deus Ex on your Big Winners I'm even more excited than ever about that game.

  • kikyoo

FUCK! i was hopeing X-com might go back to it's glory days. How fucking hard is it to make a good fucking Xcom game god damn those motherfucking cock sucking dick licking ass wiping sons of bitches!

sonic 4 looks ok and I am interested for 3ds as longs as there is games that are not cuetsy and caters to the mature crowd as much and the younger crowd,,hell evein if they give half the attention to mature gamers and the fun loving bedtime dream wolrd video games and kirby ball of yard id be happy lol, if not 3d or not ill pass on 3ds

  • http://www.facebook.com/jbigness Jordan Bigness

You know, the only X-com games that i liked were the first two and if they made a graphically enhanced one that puts those two games in one game then it will be a true X-com game to me. Not the ones that followed.

  • TurianDude

Welcome back to the front Spoony, you've actually inspired me to go in and try to do my own show now since I've seen some of the things from E3 cause I was staying fully in the loop with it, and its a shame that they're still trying to get something out of Sonic, I mean it was a good series for its time but I think its time to put the Hedgehog down.

  • zolt

Thanks for your hard work ForkyOne!

  • HappyMascotShow

looking forward to hearing the rants, especially the sonic one for some reason. maybe cause i know some who loves sonic and would like them to be reduced to tears. ah we have fun.

awesome! can't wait for the videos

  • kefkaesque

Also please tell me you played the Harmonix dance game and filmed it.

    That would be fantastic.

  • http://twitter.com/Drkstlkr7 Stephen Harris

Err…I was under the impression that Sonic 4 and Colors were surprisingly good. I've only been hearing good things about them. XCOM and Bethesda? Yeah, those I can see why you'd be pissed at those.

  • Tokolosh

I knew the XCom remake would be bollocks. They're just NOT approaching it right… Ever since they announced that it was an FPS I knew they were just trying to cash in on the Franchise name, and not trying to honour the original game which was one of the best ever made.

And the worst part is, that it's success or failure will mean an end to any hope of a proper XCom remake – success will mean that they'll feel that gamers wanted XCom to be an FPS all along, and it's failure will lead the beancounter-monkeys to the conclusion that the XCom brand is no longer profitable and they'll pull the plug.

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing Old Republic, Deus Ex, and especially Civ V!

  • MassDelirium

I don't know what's the scorn at Bethesda, but if I have to guess, I'll say it's probably because the only games they showcased were shooters save for New Vegas, although it still comes close. Really, the only thing I'm interested in from them is Fallout: New Vegas and it's not because Fallout 3 was particularly good but more that Obsidian is behind this and they put writing and such as a priority. Plus, some of the folks working on New Vegas also worked on the original Fallout games, so I'm hoping it's going to be in the same spirit as those despite the gameplay being different.

As for RAGE, well, considering iD Software's track record these last few years, I'm not exactly looking forward to it, the last few titles they made were mostly ports, I'm actually quite sure the last original game they have made was Doom 3, while Quake 4, Quakewars and Wolfenstein 2009 were made by other studios, and look how Doom 3 turned out.

I haven't much to say about the others Bethesda are publishing, since I haven't really taken the time to check any info on them.

XCom… I've never played the originals but, I know it's considered classic and that completely changing the genre and setting will just alienate fans. It's just not XCom, it's just another FPS that should probably have been called something else.

Anyhow, if you dare talk trash about New Vegas then I will… I will…
…I will do nothing, can't always see things from the same point of view/have the same opinion, not that I can say it's great or bad yet as it hasn't been released, but I do have hope for it.

Yes there was an X-Com FPS that had already been canned but it had continued on in futuristic timeline like the first three X-com games and Interceptor. Interceptor was a re-inventing of the series because of the fact that they replaced the turn-based combat with a space flight simulator. I wound up enjoying it because I was in desperate need of a good flight sim at the time, but even then there were horrible holes in the physics and AI. This re-creation has taken a step back in time to the 50s it looks, and I hold no high hopes. The game itself looks great to me, but it's not X-Com.

  • goodguya

It was indeed the only thing Valve spoke of. Why anything else?

Xcom will be either hit or miss. They are trying hard atleast, to pull it off as a shooter but I still think they are just trying to say “Turn based games are for gays, Shooters are the only good genre now!”

Thankfully, not many people remember XCOM:Enforcer, the worse game of the series. Its like the Shaq Fu of shooters. Yes, worse then Drake. Whether or not the Xcom will end up like enforcer is yet to be seen I guess.

  • DeathsHead419

Why, what else indeed? Oh, maybe the a certin next installment of a certain legendary FPS franchise that has vanished off the face of the earth after the last episode ended on a cliffhanger nearly three years ago?

  • DeathsHead419

Oooh, they scewed up Xcom? I've never played the series, but I know of it's legendary status and the pain of whatching a beloved franchise be screwed up potentially beyond repair. But I'm curious, what did Bethesda show that pissed you off? I mean, the only game of their's I'm aware of is Fallout: New Vegas and that one looks pretty good.

Also, is it really a surpirse that new Sonic game is going to suck? I mean really?

  • tanukiblue

I'd say Brink, Rage, Fallout New Vegas, DKC returns, Ocarina on the 3DS and portal 2 we're my favorite of the show.

I wish we could've seen video of Deus ex, gameplay that is, but I can wait. Unless I just missed the gameplay videos…

I can understand being angry at xcom, I was baffled reading about it in oxm, but Sonic and Bethesda? Like the Sonic guys seem to be releasing the classic sonic with Sonic 4, and Bethesda showed great promise to me with Brink and Fallout new vegas…Heck NV combines the writing of old fallouts with the engine of new which is great.

I was worried about Rage, considering iD's latest outings, but the gameplay video impressed me.

Yes. This one actually looks good. REALLY good. And the hands on report from my friend confirms this. Sonic Colors is basically All Day Stage Sonic Unleashed (that's a good thing). Couple that with Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors on DS (Sonic Rush 3 basically) and we're getting THREE actually GOOD (or so it seems) Sonic games this year so I am surprised Spoony disliked one…maybe it was Sonic Freedom Riders? This will be interesting.

PC Gamer, some of the biggest X-COM lovers ever, said in their preview that XCOM looks pretty good.

  • LegendoftheSkies

Sonic Colors has actually been getting some good feedback. Although, I still refuse to get excited about it though until I see reviews given that other Sonic games have gotten solid previews only to end up being shitfests.

I was practically in tears from the lack of Rare announcement. They had so many games they should have announced, but the only thing they showed was Kinect Wii sports… Actually, that kind of reminds me of the Nintendo keynote the last couple years. Not this year though, the 3DS looks like it'll kick a fair bit of ass.

Why rage at Bethesda, all they did was publish New Vegas and while I absolutely hate the way their doing preorder bonuses the only complaint I can really think of is that it's too soon for a new fallout game, which would be a problem if Bethesda was actually the developer. As for other things, the second they announced X-Com anyone should have known it would be bad, they announced it as an FPS, and again, no surprise with Sonic failing. Actually my opinion of the show winner was Nintendo

  • draxo

Honestly, these day's I don't trust the published press. Way too much finger dipping going on.

  • draxo

    Agreed so much.

I have no problem with them making another cup/paste mass market FPS for the mass market x-box crowd. I have a problem with them takcing the X-Com name on to it.

To this day al of us old school X-com gamers still tend to consider the first 3 X-Com and the rest.. well. We consider the top-down tactical games X-Com. SOme of us don't mind the flight sim.. bt.. eh.

Its just hard. I grew up with X-Com, and I have no problem with FPS's, but I am very very tired of everything turning into FPS's these days because some big-wig's just think 'FPS = bigger market'.

how is the new Legend of Zelda game?

  • http://alexf0x.livejournal.com/ Alexf0x

Ok what I don't get is the panning of X-com before the game comes out, of the games shown at this years rather disappointing E3 it was one of the games that excited me the most.

What people are forgetting is that X-com was going to FPS land back in the day anyway with the abandoned X-com: Alliance, a squad based FPS title with the X-com licence, it was looking good and I remember getting excited about it over ten years ago. However it got bogged down in development hell and the demise of Micropose/Hasbro only saw fit to finish it off.

Considering that we never got a chance to play alliance, and this looks a lot like the game we never got to play, so I am rather stoked about that. I am also not worrying about the change of setting to the late 1940's/ early 1950's American suburbia too, or that Xcom now seems to be part of the young FBI.

What is worrying me though is those blob like enemy's (they look crap! Come on where's the sectoids and snakemen?), and that a lot of the R and D side of the game now seems to be tied in with the action. Not to mention this could be a linear experience.

  • DeathsHead419

Well, I stand corrected then. Still, it will be interesting to see what Spoony says about the games and why he might select them out for scorn.

  • goodguya

My question is why were you EXPECTING that? They clearly stated, Portal 2 only. I want HL2: EP3 as well, but I wasn't EXPECTING it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/taylor.spear1 Taylor Spear

I'd like to know exactly what it is about Sonic that is a failure. From what I've seen, Sonic 4 and the 2 editions of Sonic Colors have all been getting positive feedback, and the Sonic Riders demo was not open to the public, so no one knows how that'll really play.

So if this is just another one of those “lolSonicfailsagainbecauseof3D” or “lolSonicissuchastupidfranchise” rants, then you officially lose me as a viewer, Spoony. Seriously, Sonic is such a low hanging fruit for derision these days, that it's tiresome.

I agree with Deus Ex being one of the best (IMO THE BEST) games of E3. The trailer looked fantastic and the first two were amazing games.
