E3 2012 – Nintendo Pre-Show

The Spoony One | Jun 9 2012 | more notation(s) |

Angry Joe and JewWario get together with Spoony before the doors open to the E3 Expo to discuss Nintendo’s highly-anticipated unveiling of the WiiU’s launch catalog!

Wii U Pad – Dungeon Master + 4 Wii Mote Characters = Dungeons and Dragons U with complete Dungeon Master customization from maps, items, monsters, etc.

They don’t need to add AI to the monster or a story since that’s the job of the DM. I’m sure that will be a game with almost unlimited replayability but is strictly a multiplayer game.

So that Jewarrio guy. Whats his deal?

    • joluoto

He mostly review Japanese import games for older consoles.

  • CaptainDingaling

This is just the calm before the storm then in 2014 we can all have hype again with everyone 600 dollar system and all super high def re-re-re-releases of games we’re already playing now.

I would love to see a new pokesnap for the wii-u

  • http://twitter.com/PetrosofSparta Petros L. Ioannou

I was incredibly disappointed with the Nintendo E3 Conference. I didn’t make it to E3 until the final day (met JewWario and Roses, which was nice – also Wil Wheaton) but I did play with the Wii U on the final day, I enjoyed it and I’ve always seen how huge the potential the Wii U had. The conference however was just dull as all hell, actually worse, it was so exciting at the start, as a Nintendo fan, the start was great, the Pikmin, the Arkham City (second favourite game of last year 10/10 for me), announcement of Mass Effect 3, ZombiU, New Super Mario Bros U, all interesting… then it just kinda got dull, they spent 20 minutes on Nintendo Land and it was like I’d just taken speed, gotten really hyped up and now I was on the come down. Nintendo needed to finish with a bazooka… instead they whipped out a squirt gun.

X-Com:Enemy Unknown is slated to launch this fall. Its being made by Firaxis.

  • ANNONNY

Was potential and innovation for the Vita, but we all saw how that turned out..

Also have Nintendo and their love of shelling out the same freaking Mario game cash ins and the like to little kids..

    • Frozt

They just didn’t show the games during the press conference. They did, however, release a 3-minute long trailer showing a pretty sweet line-up for the Vita.

Why they didn’t squeeze it in before that Harry Potter bullshit, I do not know…

  • rvb1023

Potential sounds like what the Wii was and that was the most disappointing console ever released and easily Nintendo’s worst since the Virtual Boy.  So far the Wii U is sounding incredibly similar, though at least they are offering more traditional control methods right off the bat.  Unfortunately Nintendo has set a bar and all Sony and Microsoft have to do is put it higher.  I was really pulling for Nintendo to show me something new and the most exciting game from their conference (P-100) was glossed over and barely mentioned while two new uninspired NSMB games were highlighted.

As bad as the Vita showing was, I imagine most of that will be shown during TGS.

  • Jake Lohrke

This was a very watchable E3 video when most E3 stuff is pretty boring.

  • http://twitter.com/DanyCervantes Daniel Cevantes

Angry Joe kept talking about an inventory system for an RPG. Apparently Darksiders II, one of the Wii U launch titles, will have an inventory system using the Gamepad.

Also Joe if you’re reading this, please, review Darksiders II! It’s not a full out RPG but Darksiders II does have RPG elements. I say check it out.

  • Frozt

I’m expecting some great coverage. I’m looking forward to hearing about XCOM.

  • Kuncoss

I enjoyed this discussion greatly! :D

You 3 do have some good chemistry together and you did express your opinions in an informative way.

    Keep em coming!

  • tom gull

joe keeps sayiny it would be stupid if nintendo did this or that and they’ve already done it. Cross play on theps3/vita requires two copies right now of mlb12 the show, and its only two stupid toads in NSMBW on the wii(old game not the one coming out) I understand that he says he either plays xbox and pc and it shows. Same with him talking about the vita when spoony seems more involved because he cares and owns a vita and only plays crap on it because thats all thats there. ( I actually beat the shitty free motorstorm rc game because I had nothing else)

  • http://twitter.com/gamepopper Tim aka Gamepopper

Shame you didn’t mention the funniest announcement from the Conference (at least to me). On 3DS, New Super Mario Bros 2, now with MORE COINS!!

I wish I was making that up.

They did. That was the Goldfinger joke. “MOOOOREEE GOOOOLD” Remember?

  • http://www.facebook.com/jbigness Jordan Bigness

I have to admit the innovation is there in the wii-u but if you want to get those games that would work really well you need to talk to the individual companies who makes games (aka capcom ect). I can see the potential for a good monster hunter game where there are quick inventory slots and instead of flipping through with the controller you have the screen showing everything. But thats my idea though.

I hate you for hating Heavy Rain…. lol
Heavy Rain was a masterpiece man.

    • http://twitter.com/Solin_Outlander Jay Logan

I like Heavy Rain and see it as a masterpiece myself, but I can easily see where Spoony’s hate comes from. It wasn’t a game. It was a giant quicktime event, which can easily put some people off, especially if they bought a game for the gameplay.

I’ve always been story first, gameplay second and everything else after kind of guy, so eh. But I can see Spoony’s PoV.

      • paul blackstock

Heavy rain masterpiece laughable. The game’s story was cliched and poorly written. I could go on a rant explaining all the plot holes, the badly written characters and all the useless QTE.

  • dennett316

Ubisoft did a better job of showing off the WiiU with their on-stage Rayman demo than Nintendo did with all their soulless trailer videos and talking heads.  Like Spoony, I can see potential in the WiiU, but Nintendo really blew it.  When people say they want a Mario game on a new console, they don’t mean an HD rehash of a concept that was available on the Wii…they want something like Galaxy which changes the formula from the last game.

  • godmars

You want Sony to outright lie about games?

    *facepalm*

  • DarkSaint76

I surprised Nintendo didn’t show Dragon Quest X.  The Japanese version is almost done.

    • Aiddon

Nintendo typically doesn’t like to show stuff unless they can get it out within the next six months. There’s no WAY DQX is coming out within the year, especially considering infrastructure and localization.

  • Aiddon

I saw Mario, I saw Pikmin 3, I’m good. I also do want to see what ideas people will try for the gamepad.

  • http://racattackforce.tumblr.com/ Racattack_Force

ZombiU will have a zombie master mode like Joe was describing. But they obviously just skimmed over that. That was pretty much E3 this year: just developers skimming over or just not talking about the important stuff.

  • Dr_Peace

Spoony, more and more you just seem so completely out of touch with Nintendo, which leads me to wonder why you bother covering them. You really are just missing way too much (and seeing things from a skewed perspective), all just because you’re so focused on seeming ‘mature’.

ZombieU is looking very interesting if you watched some actual gameplay.
The game has TONS of uses for the Wii U Gamepad for different mechanics such as real time inventory, zombie detector, scanner, rifle scope, hacking device, melee attacks and such. The fact that the game is a open world survival shooter with RPG elements, where if you die… your character is dead for good and you have to become another character.

AND YES, there is a CONFIRMED asymetrical multiplayer mode where you CONTROL ZOMBIEZ as a zombie master to fight the person playing with the TV.

The game looks like it should be EXACTLY what you say you wanted.

You want RPG’s, but I don’t even think you played Xenoblade on the Wii,
which was my GOTY last year and widely considered one of the best JRPG’s
since FF7. If you want to see some maturity and innovation, you should
    be playing that.

You want strategy games, but aren’t interested in Pikmin? Which is going full blown big map RTS with the Wii U game.

You do realise that Nintendo Land is probably going to be a pack-in title right? The Wii U’s version of Wii Sports.

Do you realise that the ONE big issue Nintendo consoles have had for the longest time is that third parties refuse to port games to them. The Wii U is looking to get all that third party support back, you can murder things in Assassin’s Creed (frankly overplayed franchise) and get your Nintendo magic.

Also, have you even PLAYED Skyward Sword? First play through it, then come out and say that it’s the same. Zelda will never become a bloody grey shooter, but anyone who plays the series KNOWS that the differences between the games are many, especially with Skyward Sword.

Still I learned long ago not to take your opinion on Zelda seriously. Ignorance is not an opinion :P .

I agree about New Super Mario Brothers games being too samey and the franchise too prevalent, the cool additions they bring with each game aren’t enough for me either. The fact is they need to bring one out because it sells systems. I don’t understand the logic behind two boring Toad characters either (one of them should be Peach), but at least everyone plays the same gameplay-wise.

My big issue with the Nintendo press conference is how it was poorly planned out, they split up all of the info they had into 4 pieces.

    Pre-E3 half hour show.
    E3 conference.
    Nintendo Roundtable.
    3DS conference.

If they had just planned their conference better and maybe had it run for 2 hours, they would have EASILY dashed the competition, even if they didn’t have any bombshells. The conference did lack impact as it stands, last year was much better.

We all would like Nintendo to show us a glimpse of their next big action game, or a new Zelda, but those games take time.

Also, when all is said and done. Nintendo have BY FAR the most games being released this year (out of probably all publishers) when you consider all the Wii U, 3DS, Wii and DS games set for launch.

You are aware that is what they said right. The conferences where poorly done. They all three said they did not know if ZombieU would have it they did not say it didnt have it. They where just not sure it did. It’s possible they didnt address it or they skimmed by so fast no one realized it.

As far as Zelda games, they can be very cookie cutter with a few things different then one another or new features that fail hard.

But you brought up good bits of info but some of which was addressed in the video.

    • Aiddon

One thing that I fire back at people when they complain about Nintendo’s franchises “never innovating” is this: what the HELL could you possibly do to improve them? Seriously, there’s not a single thing that one could do to improve Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, F-Zero, Pikmin, etc. It’s like trying to improve the wheel; you can’t fix what isn’t broke nor can you improve something but adding something arbitrary to it. Of course I never get a straight answer and what answers I do get can be summed up as “derp.” Nintendo just does incredible level design, something most game developers have forgotten how to do due to deterioration of a grasp of fundamentals.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Rosenbaum/100001387887487 George Rosenbaum

The only thing they can do is make new franchises.

Who knows, if they do that for a few years, the newest Zelda, Mario, Metroid games will become old enough to be retro, and everyone will get excited when they ‘revive’ it ten years later.

Admit it, you would feel the same way about a new Mega Man game, despite there being 13 games in the franchise, because the last game (Mega Man & Bass) was released in 1998.

        • Dr_Peace

Nintendo make more NEW IP’s than anyone else, this is just a fact whether you know about them or not. Just look at how much new stuff they’ve published this generation.

          But…

They will NEVER sell as well as the big franchises. Xenoblade may well be the best game ever to everyone who’s played it, but it’s unlikely to break a million sales.

          Therefore…

They will NEVER replace the big franchises.

Pikmin hasn’t reached Metroid levels of popularity yet, but it’s getting there. Spoony obviously doesn’t want that game though… for some reason… even though it’s a strategy game…

So what should Nintendo do? Abandon Mario? Ain’t gonna happen. That would be suicide.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Rosenbaum/100001387887487 George Rosenbaum

I’m not saying abandon Mario or LoZ forever. Just abandon him long enough for the next release to feel new again. Maybe space out the releases by a year or so.

        • Aiddon

Nintendo DOES make new IPs, but not recklessly so. They realize that just because something has a new name on it doesn’t make it original. When they can come up with something with an original design as well as a new aesthetic THEN they do it. And frankly no one is sick of Mario besides hipster “hardcore” gamers trying to act cool. It’s like saying people are sick of Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny. Mario’s on a COMPLETELY different level than other game characters.

    • http://twitter.com/DuneBlythe Dune Blythe

“Also, have you even PLAYED Skyward Sword? First play through it, then come out and say that it’s the same.”

I guess you have to much of a life to stalk spoony online like I have, but Spoony has made it pretty clear he has played skyward sword on multiple occasions.

Hell, he uses the gold zelda Wiimote in his Prometheus Vlog.

You remind me of myself when I was a kid trying to explain to my mom that Power Rangers wasn’t the same thing every episode.

      • Dr_Peace

I haven’t seen the golden Zelda Wiimote in any vids and I haven’t seen any mention  of Spoony having played Skyward Sword. You’re right that this may very well be that I haven’t seen EVERYTHING Spoony had ever uploaded, the Prometheus vid is an hour long after all but I didn’t see anything in my quick skip through of it.

If he had mentioned that he actually played through a Zelda though, chances are I would know about it (given my interest). I recall him mentioning he hadn’t played Wind Waker (how one can judge Zelda without playing that I don’t know), in fact he’s been quite coy about how much of the series he’s actually seen.

He says that Zelda 2 is the most ‘different’ in the series, which is funny since Skyward Sword has JUST as many differences if not more, including the main one which is the combat (SS being motion based, Zelda 2 being sidescrolling). Zelda 2 is not a game to champion either, considering how punishing it is.

And how one can say Majora’s Mask is no different to the rest, and yet claim they care about innovative, ‘mature’ storytelling, narrative and world design is beyond me.

Basically, Spoony sounds like a Zelda noob to me.

        • http://twitter.com/DuneBlythe Dune Blythe

The zelda Wiimote is seen in the Prometheus vlog at 35:16.

Spoony has said that his problem with Zelda is that the series has grown stale.

          And he is somewhat right.

It has followed the same basic formula since SNES.

          Find a dungeon.
          Go into a dungeon.
          Find dungeon tool.
          Use tool to solve puzzles.
          Use tool to defeat boss.
          Win shiny plot device Item.

Repeat several more times till you find the final dungeon.

          Enter final dungeon
          Find final boss.
          Defeat final boss.
          Win.

This is the basic structure they have been reusing for Zelda for more then 20 years. The differences between the games usually amount to little more then a lame tacked on gimmick plus a fresh coat of paint. Oh, also the writing gets better with each game.

If every book you read followed the same basic plot, wouldn’t you get bored of it? Even if each book looked at by itself was a great book it would still get tiring.

          • http://www.facebook.com/rabblesthebinx Brian Frang

And that is the true point about Zelda II being the one that’s “different”. Yeah, you have the motion sensing controls in Skyward Sword, but the gameplay, otherwise, is pretty much the same as it has been is every 3D Zelda game, as well as the basic plotline being the same in almost every game. Zelda II had a LOT of things that set it apart from later games, a compact overworld with what basically amounted to random battles, the side-scrolling platforming sections, an exp. and level system, and a much greater emphasis on spells and smaller emphasis on puzzle-solving than later games. All of these things gave the Adventure of Link a much more “traditional” RPG feeling than later games. The motion controls in SS were the just the gimmick of the game.

That being said, I still hate Zelda II.

          • Dr_Peace

             No, it’s really not.

The plot is also not the same in every game, that’s a very lazy argument. Skyward Sword by it’s very nature has a unique plot.

The use of the word gimmick is incorrent, because you’re trying to make the new controls sound irrelevant. A good gameplay mechanic is a good gameplay mechanic, and the motion control swordplay may well be standard from now on.

Zelda 2 changed up the combat by making it sidescrolling.

Skyward changed up the combat by making the sword entirely motion controlled and overhauling enemy AI to react to that.

Zelda 2 had a more RPG-like overworld as opposed to the sandbox from Zelda 1.

Skyward Sword also changed things up by introducing flying. Not only that, but the actual overworld sections are basically puzzle focused tight sandboxes, as opposed to the past games with their giant green fields.

The platforming in Zelda 2 was poor. Zelda 1 had pits too. The 3D games allow you to jump over and fall into pits as well, that doesn’t make any of them platformers.

Skyward Sword on the other hand innovated with sprinting and the stamina metre management, you can basically freerun around the whole game, scramble up walls and stuff. Zelda has FAR more platforming gameplay than ever before.

Zelda 2 had light RPG elements.

Skyward Sword also made resource collection and item crafting/upgrading a huge part of the game.

Zelda 2 didn’t have puzzles because it’s a NES GAME. That system couldn’t do puzzles worth a damn compared to later systems. The amount of puzzles in Zelda 2 is hardly any different to Zelda 1.

Zelda 2 didn’t offer much in the way of new items. Skyward Sword gives you a ridiculous amount of new mechanics. You can freaking control time in real-time in Skyward Sword. You can drop bombs from the sky. You have proper stealth gameplay. I could go on.

Zelda 2 made the game hard as hell to play and barely any fun.

Skyward Sword was actually fun to play, and once you beat the game you unlocked a much harder mode.

For every change Zelda 2 made (most of them not actually good), Skyward Sword did more and better.

          • Dr_Peace

Thanks for telling me the time reference, yeah I see the remote. It would be cool if Spoony did game review VLOG’s again, although that might make for a heated thread!

Also, your argument is kinda ridiculous.

            Every FPS game is therefore…

            Move forward.

            Point at enemy.

            Shoot enemy.

You can boil down ANYTHING to make it sound irrelevant, and it’s always a cheap argument.

Now tell me, how many dungeons, enemies/bosses, items, puzzles and mechanics are anywhere near the same in any two Zelda games?

How many times have you been controlling time in real-time in previous Zelda games? How many Zelda games gave you full control of your sword? How many Zelda games let you freerun and do tons of platforming? I am referring to Skyward Sword here, but any game would suffice.

The games do radical things to differentiate themselves, which is why fans generally have wildly different opinions of what they want from the series.

There are people that hate cartoony Zelda, there are those that hate realistic Zelda, there are those that hate puzzle focused Zelda. There are those that hate 3D or 2D Zelda. There are people that dislike certain games for the mechanics they are focused on, be it the sailing in Wind Waker or the ’3 Day’ system in Majora’s Mask. There are people that hate motion controls.

What you are talking about is PROGRESSION. Progression is just the structure of a game, NOT the gameplay.

Most songs have a basic pop structure…

            Chorus.
            Verse.
            Chorus.
            Verse.
            Break.
            Chorus.

Does that make every song the same? No, it doesn’t.

Not to mention the fact that Skyward Sword doesn’t do that. The game has no final boss dungeon. The game gives you puzzles and items outside of dungeons. The game breaks up the flow all the time as each of the overworld areas change as you revisit them.

You do know the word ‘gimmick’ is actually positive right? A gimmick
gets peoples attention. If you’re trying to say that certain mechanics
in the games are poor, that’s requires a different argument and I don’t know what mechanics you’re referring to.

The fact that gamers want Nintendo to show a new Zelda already despite Skyward Sword coming out last year, gives me the impression that they are doing enough to keep the series relevant.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roman-Monaghan/100000507912679 Roman Monaghan

I dunno what video you were watching, cuz there were three people in it (one of whom was an admitted Nintendo fanboy) and there was a pretty clear consensus between them about what happened out there. Really you wrote way too much here for what essentially boils down to a TL;DR summery of “Spoony doesn’t blow Nintendo like I do, therefore I hates him no matter what he says evar!”

Save yourself some time next time and stick to that.

      • Dr_Peace

If you actually read my comment, you’d see that my argument is that Spoony is never going to see anything good in Nintendo if he avoids all the actual amazing stuff like Xenoblade.

Is someone was to watch Spoony for the first time, and pick one of his crapper videos, they would end up hating Spoony. I started watching with FF8, so I know he can make some pretty cool stuff.

Get it? You need to see the WHOLE picture before you can make a judgement, the only thing Spoony has is a skewed perspective.

People complained last year that Sony’s conference is too long. Apparently Sony’s PR decided to shorten the conference “to increase impact”, and the Vita library demonstration suffered.

Which is stupid, who could complain about too much content. 25 new Vita games on the show floor.

    http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6380868/sony-trimmed-ps-vita-from-briefing-to-save-time
    ________
    About Nintendo;

The potential makes me giddy but the whole conference was stilted and so awkward, they need to work on their presentations.
They should pick a few thing up from Sony, their conferences are always stylish and classy, without being  pretentious and removing the MS/Ubisoft “clowning around” factor.

I can’t wait to hear what Spoony thinks about X-Com: Enemy Unknown. I was surprised to see him in the 2K press area after the “BETRAYED!” thing last year. Thought it was hilarious, wish I had a chance to say hi but I was going into an X-Com demo.

Yeah, this new game is actually X-Com and I’m pretty stoked. The Wii U… meh.

I watched the sony conference, That wonderbook shit stretched on way too long. It was so bad that during the Harry Potter segment I was literally banging my head against the wall.

It really did drag on. The irony? I’ve been wanting a Harry Potter game, or a Star Wars game for the Move since I saw the damn thing unveiled. And the only motion games for the two are on the 360.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roman-Monaghan/100000507912679 Roman Monaghan

I think Spoony meant Persona 4, since P3 is on the PSP/PSN PS2 classics thing. P4 is the one with the super special remake with all this extra shit thrown in.

  • http://sbkmulletman.deviantart.com/ sbkMulletMan

I get a fun 3 stooges vibe from these guys.  Leave it to them to make E3 interesting, heh.

A little side-note for Joe: I really have to thank/curse him because he’s been encouraging me to buy some games from his reviews (I love his analytical approaches).  And by amazing coincidence, I was watching his Mount & Blade: Napoleonic Wars video today, and boom, the whole series is under 9 bucks packaged together as a 1-day deal on Steam and I’ll probably end up buying it.

I love specifically watching Spoony and Joe together, they’re just a fun formula that work well together.  Especially when they get energetic (BETRAYAL/LOYALTY!).  Jew Wario is always a welcome appearance for me, mostly because I get a kick out of his name, but here it’s special because the “Nintendo Fanboy” expresses his disappointment with the Nintendo presentation (and don’t get ME started on my disappointment with Nintendo, whoo!).

I don’t know why so many fans get pissy over crossovers and collaborations like this, it’s fun seeing opinions and personalities mix.  So keep up the good work guys!  Though I do feel bad for them having to sit through such mediocrity.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/BLVXCVZCUBCZIAWIC3K5UCOXRM Colonel

Uh fans get pissy at crossovers that dont work. Spoonys crossovers with Linkara, Pat the NES Punk and especially AngryJoe and the Cinema Snob had always generated positive feedback. Because their personalites just worked so well together. (Hey and look at the love Miles gets. :D)

But often its just a awkward to watch, because two complety different styles and also qualities clash. Then you get comment sections like when during the FilmBrain crossover, or the Anime-something one. And I have to agree with those comments. Less angry and hurtfull, but still agree.

      So in conclusion:

More Brad Jones, more AngryJoe, and MORE MILES !

You should change the title of this “Nintendo Pre-Show” makes it sound like you are just talking about the Pre-E3 Nintendo conference, but its actually a “Conferences Review/Overview”

  • http://twitter.com/Morwath Staffan Blonde

I think that Nintendo’s biggest mistake was lack of focus. Instead of showing off games that no core gamers care about they should have shown of the Wii U version of games Like Colonial Marines, Darksiders 2, Tekken tag 2 and such.

Sure, we already know that they were coming for the Wii U, but If they showed what makes the Wii U version the “best” version I think people would have been lot more excited instead of showing stuff like Just dance, Sing and Wii fit U. Also the NintendoLand segment went on too much in depth for it’s own good.

  • ScutigeraColeoptrata

I think Nintendo is smart to go for the general public audience, as that has worked well for them in the past. Personally, I can’t really comment intelligently on the future of the console market since I stopped console gaming with the PS2. I also mostly play RPGs, when I still play games at all, and those usually aren’t the really big ‘display piece’ games showcased at E3.

I love the hair by the way.

You managed to talk a lot about a press conference where Nintendo pretty much didn’t care showing anything because they will probably show the more impressive things during Tokyo Game Show.

What the hell is wrong with a PS3 fighting game with SONY characters?

    • Aiddon

Because it literally looks like somewhat modded SSBB to have Sony characters in it. Plus Sony’s roster, unfortunately, has nowhere near the personality or flair that Nintendo’s MONSTROUS library of characters does.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Rosenbaum/100001387887487 George Rosenbaum

It plays more like a hybrid between Powerstone and a lesser known game called Small Arms, but the idea was probably ripped from SSBB.

And seriously? No Ratchet and Clank, or Jak and Daxter? I know Jak 3 was horrible, but the J&D series is at least more popular than PARRAPA THE RAPPER.

        • Aiddon

Sony literally had a trailer that had the tags “Smash Bros.” for it on their official Youtube channel. I will say they’re ADMITTING it, but it doesn’t exactly excuse their complete lack of creativity. Then again, Sony in general is extremely bankrupt as far as ideas go.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Rosenbaum/100001387887487 George Rosenbaum

Ugh, so true. Did you see Sony’s actual show, where they gave all of the reporters in the audience a free year of PSN Plus? That’s called “buying out the media”, it’s so dishonest.

          • Aiddon

I don’t really watch Sony’s show anymore; I don’t have a PS3 or a Vita and I’ve always found their presentations to be rather dull and boring. Still, I’m not surprised at Sony basically buying people off. They’ve been doing TERRIBLE financially for awhile now and posted one of the WORST yearly losses in their recent history. Ever since the PSP they’ve been stumbling around drunkenly.

I think its kind of the opposite really, the fact the characters have a deep sense of character and defined personality, and the fact the roster is so VASTLY diverse in their genres and ratings, that its going to give so mixed signals and gamer whiplash, I’d think. Flair? I agree, Nintendo’s got that in spades. Either way. I’m keeping my eye on it, it looks like it might be fun.

        • Aiddon

Drake is the kind of guy who, while he is out for money he’s not going to let some Jackhole Neo-Nazi conquer the world if he can help it. Granted, there are times when he feels he’s over his head, or made mistakes he can’t fix and it makes him want to quit, but he has support from others to help him back on track. He has an on-and-off relationship with Elena Fisher which has trouble staying on, since his lifestyle is much different from hers. He chased a dude though an entire city FULL of guys looking for him to find his mentor Victor “Goddamn” Sullivan, who he basically considers a friend and father figure. He wants to live up to the name of his ancestor, Sir Francis Drake, and uncover the secrets that he may have found in the past.

Kratos, as much as I despise him, is a tormented individual who’s haunted by the death of his family… at his own hands. That sort of grief tends to negatively impact your sociality. He wants to find some way of avenging the family he killed, and just stop being angry. He even had his chance, but if he stuck with it, it would have meant the end of the world, thanks to Hades’ asshole powerhungry wife/girlfriend. Granted it doesn’t exactly excuse driving your thumbs into the eyes of the God of the Sea, or crushing an innocent concubine with a gate mechanism, but hey no one’s perfect.

Sweet Tooth and Radec……….. no comment. A psychopath and a genocidal asshole.

Ratchet, began his gaming career as a selfish little twerp, but as the game rolled on he basically started shedding the various layers of douchebag and turned into a respectable guy. He has to deal with the fact he’s pretty much the last of his kind, who they themselves were basically saviors of the galaxy. There are those who want to abuse the Lombax technology for their own ends, which probably wouldn’t sit well with you either. Even so, he’s basically just a guy wanting to get though life with his friend Clank.

Cole McGrath started off as an average guy who had something extraordinary happen to him… as well as cataclysmic. Half his city was destroyed, thousands of people were killed, and he was basically at the center of it all as an unwitting tool. He’s called a terrorist, when in reality, he was just an unwitting delivery boy. He could either push past the hate around him, and become a hero, or show people why they shouldn’t threaten people more powerful than them.

Nariko is basically a warrior fighter with her clan, to protect the Heavenly Sword. She’s strong, but still vulerable in a way, because her birth was prophesized and considered to be cursed, leaving her basically ostracized from her own clan. Even though she has no real care for them, save for Kai and Shen, she is willing to die to protect them…. and the OPENING of the game basically shows her doing JUST THAT.

Sly Cooper considers himself a master thief. The difference being he only steals from other criminals. After all, what better way to prove yourself the better thief than to steal from the competition? The first game revolves around the stolen Thievius Raccoonus, a book comprised of the knowledge and skills of the Copper family lineage, taken by the Fiendish Five, who also murdered Sly’s father to get it….. practically right in front of Sly no less. He’s working to get the pages back to restore his family’s honor and hopefully avenge his father. There’s also the matter of Carmelita Fox, who he has some obvious romantic tension with.

However not all characters are created equal, some characters are better written than others.

As for Nintendo… this sort of thing IS present, but not as plentiful. Characters like Pit and Samus have been given distinct characterization, and their games reflect that. But it doesn’t always need to be. In fact, Nintendo themselves believe that characters like Mario, with no actual intact personality, allow them to take on just about any role or genre (and I personally think it attributes to his longevity). Mario isn’t so much a character as he is an icon, which Nintendo has right to openly embrace.

          • Aiddon

  • http://www.facebook.com/david.arseneau David Arseneau

To answer your question about why you can only play as Mario, Luigi, and two anonymous Toad: Miyamoto and Nintendo figured that if they wanted to add characters like Wario or Donkey Kong (not Peach, of course, she has to get captured and set back the feminist movement another 20 years back), they would have to develop a specific kind of controls for each characters. Sad to say, but Rayman Origins, which is a far superior game, suffered from the same problem: Rayman, Globox, and two anonymous Teensies. I won’t say it’s incredibly lazy and a wasted opportunity to give useless characters like Waluigi a status as legitimate video game character, but it pretty much is.

ZombiU actually does have a multiplayer mode similar to what you guys mentioned.

“The demo’s title screen proclaimed that the game had a multiplayer
mode. When I asked about that, the Ubi employee told me that in that
mode, one player uses the Wii U GamePad to place zombies around the map
and the other player uses a Pro Controller to fight them off.”

    with?

Hell, what if you get creative and put like Link in there, or Captain Falcon?

    How awesome does that sounds?

  • Kagato Jurai

I think all 3 of you were absolutely right. The Nintendo conference was very lackluster this year.

The problem was that while they did offer some Mario games, none of them were the new generation of “epic” Mario games, like Mario Galaxy. They were instead the platforming Mario games for more casual play. Paper Mario and Luigi’s Mansion are the exceptions, but they are for the 3DS. The next Smash Bros was already announced last year and only began development this spring, so it was impossible to see anything of that.

There was very little 3rd party support. Well, granted, many of the titles are either ports of older games like Batman and Ninja Gaiden while a few are only being added to the Multi-Platform library, such as Assassin’s Creed 3. But there was only a single revealed exclusive that was anything truly good, which was ZombiU.

The Wii U, as Spoony said, has a ton of potential. The games are lacking for this year, but that is not to say the games will lack in the future. The WiiU has enormous potential with dealing with inventory screens, different modes of play and so on, but Nintendo is suffering from a lack of a strong exclusive launch line-up. The games it has to choose from aren’t bad, but who’s going to buy a WiiU for Assassin’s Creed 3 when they can just buy it for the 360 they already own?

ZombiU and Mario do, at least, make the console worthwhile right away, but those who are even just the slightest bit not satisfied should probably wait until Nintendo announces more games for the system. A year from now, I’m sure more games will be announced that will make the WiiU a powerful contender against the more “hardcore” systems like Playstation and Xbox.

Soon, it’ll reach a point where there will hardly be any 3rd party exclusives and consoles are going to come down to a battle of 1st party exclusives and console features. I believe this next generation is going to be reaching these levels since I agree with J-Dub. Graphics have hit a bit of a wall and it’ll be hard to do more with it. Instead, different ways to play will be the name of the game… and Nintendo has those innovations in spades.

… did he seriously say “Sony knows how to run their press conferences”?  -What-?

    • Aiddon

no kidding, I’ve always found Sony’s pressers to be boring, overly-long, and flatly presented. Tretton doesn’t have even a tenth of the charisma that Reggie does.

      • PeaTearGryfin

They may not have the charisma of Reggie, but they have the games. At the end of the day, E3 really does come down to games. Sony has always been really good about remembering that and I think that’s why Spoony said that Sony knows how to run a conference.

        • Aiddon

          What games?

          • PeaTearGryfin

Beyond, The Last of Us, God of War: Ascension, All Star Battle Royale. All of these are major releases that you can be guaranteed are going to be big.

          • Aiddon

            Four titles. Whoop-dee-doo.

          • PeaTearGryfin

You know what. I would rather have 4 unique titles that blow the room away than several expected titles that get a meh reaction out of a crowd.

          • Ryan Porter

Yeah the Sony conference was the best by far. It’s clear to me they care more about development of their in-house titles than Microsoft does or even Nintendo these days. I really can’t think of the last titles Microsoft funded that wasn’t Halo or Gears of War outside of Kinect bs games.

          • ilya sul

Pretty fair look at this year’s press conference. Then again, I’m just happy that Spoony’s not being a total jerk towards Nintendo, ’cause I’m a Nintendo fanboy. The only complaint I have about this video is that Spoony’s still calling all of Nintendo’s games “kids’ games”.

    • Petey0707

I’m a fanboy of Nintendo too and to be fair, their products are still oriented towards a wide audience, including kids. That’s not to say some of the games being released look amazing. I’m looking forward to next year even more.

  • thegodemperor

wait, it hasn’t been a year since the Vita came out. Or do you mean a year since the last E3 and you wanted to see more for it? EH, I guess. The only thing I want to see before I even decide to pick up a PS Vita is to see it finally have the god damn UMD -> Digital Download promise they made so I can turn the PSP games I bought that were UMDs (before they offered Digital Download) into playable on PS Vita. I AM NOT rebuying the god damn games even if they make them cheap as fuck for it. Once they do that, I’ll buy a Vita even if the library’s not so great atm cause I do a lot more on my PSP than play games and the Vita seems to offer even more in that way.

    JewWario knows what’s up.

If the bar for graphics gets any higher than it is now, all it will do is send a release date that much farther down the line, or make games shorter than they already are.

You know why the reason the FF7 remake is such a huge maybe? Our current bar for graphics. It’s ridiculous. I don’t want graphics to be any better. It’s killing the industry, whether you’re willing to admit it or not.

Back in the N64 days, the whole issue of graphics and 3D delayed Mother 3 for YEEAAAAARRRRRS. The Earthbound/Mother 2 team wasn’t ready for it.

  • http://twitter.com/Yuoaman Nick Burns

You guys hit the nail on the fucking head – the Wii U has HUGE potential, but it’s almost as if Nintendo doesn’t have a clue what to do with it, so they’re just going to wait for other developers to take advantage of it. Next year I’m sure we’ll see some great Wii U stuff from third parties, and maybe even Nintendo itself, but this year was ridiculously disappointing after last year’s conference.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lucas.kosinski Lucas Kosinski

Pikmin is a great strategy game.  Nintendo is apparently having a summer conference to show off new games.  E3 was a let down.  They did not showcase two of their best looking games ZombiU (which does have the Zombie Master mode Joe mentioned) and P-100 from Platinum games.  Which at first looks like Pikmin but them you see that it is a games more like Viewtifull Joe.

Retro was apparently going to show there game as well but decided that it was not ready.

  • Axel Cadaver

    cough Twilight Princess cough

  • Brooks Kimble

i’m thinking maybe nintendo doesn’t want to show off their game changing heavy weight games this year and have the shine fall off before next year when sony and microsoft pull out their new systems and big games. it’s a tricky tactic, they could easily be overshadowed with side by side announcements since they are hardcore gamer friendly, but at the same time you don’t want your best shots for system sales to be considered old news when the competition is just showing theirs. maybe i’m just thinking based on my loyalty to the company that brought me into gaming. but i still like to give them the benefit of the doubt. and really, the idea of putting out games that are good and well received, such as batman arkham city, could keep people kind of waiting around and looking forward to something new and equally good to come out next year.

  • http://twitter.com/KPTTownie Kevin Travis

E3 this year, as a whole, was rather lackluster. Not even Nintendo, who has had exciting conferences for the past few, was exempt from this. They did have games to show but, no big surprises which means there wasn’t anyway they could particularly wow anyone. Pikmin 3 is great to finally see but, as much as I love it, I don’t see it being a game that will draw huge masses due to its nature. Even if the Pikmins’ cute looks belie their murderous nature. Man, those things really are ruthless.
