AD&D: Heroes of the Lance Review

The Spoony One | Jan 25 2007 | more notation(s) |

Click here for a bonus commentary track.

Witness one of the most broken, pointless, and frustrating RPGs ever to blight the world: AD&D – Heroes of the Lance, a game with broken hit detection, unforgivably bad graphics, and the cheapest frigging enemies ever.

Somehow this is the review I keep getting back to over and over and over again. The cynical tone and the razorsharp rants are just perfect!

My favorite Spoony-review (apart from the Phantasmagoria-series of course).

Man, I sympathize with you; they don’t make that many good DnD games.
But what I can’t figure out is how you can stand to play these bad games. Doesn’t it hurt you? Deeply?

Anyway, keep rockin’ it. Love the new site design!

I have this, never beat it yet, but watching this wants to make me try it again. Those Dragonmen are annoying, but theres a trick to beatin them easy, Fire a Sleep spell at them, then hammer them to little tiny bits and your good. Those dwarfs however are that annoying, havent found an easy way to kill em

Gods, I would kill to play a campaign with Spoons. Then again, I’m far too much of a beginner to be bothered with. And because I am, I can’t get any experience and I never get to play…. *crys lonely nerd tears*

Anyway. Beautiful one, can’t beleive I passed it over time and time again.

Wow that game sucked. Good review though. It’s too bad Dragon Lance doesn’t translate well outside of the books.
There is also a crappy DVD as seen here:

haha I was sitting at my computer at work doing quality control…for software nonetheless…while listening to this….no one knew I was listening to this till I got to 7:10 and let out a rampid snort out of no where…I was laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe…..”and the music never changes….nu nu nu nu NU NU NU NU NU….”

This was my second favorite review besides the ultimate review on phantasmagoria II! Hey I think i can even get away w/ listening to this at work….since I’m involved w/ the “what not to do before this software gets published” crew.

haha… this brings back bad, bad memories of when i was maybe 7 or 8, and my older brother was into these books, so we rented this game… i remember standing on top of the random swords or bags of gold for close to an hour, freaking the hell out trying to pick the damn thing up. this was the only game i remember actually trying to return early that we had rented

Lol that game really looked like it sucked. A good AD&D console game is AD&D: Pool of Radiance for the NES. It basically takes the actual paper and pencil game and converts it to the console control. You roll up characters, purchase your gear, and go kick monster ass. The best part is you can play with up to four friends if you don’t mind controller passing.

I also noticed that I have the Heroes of the Lance miniatures set XD

When you arrived at the first naked dwarf, I starting yelling at you (yeah, like you could hear me) to use Tas or Flint to kill the dwarf, only to realize that it was pointless all around because you still have to hit downwards… ugh. Why was this game made?! I’m so glad I never played it! I think I’ll stick to the books and the crappy movie they made.

That may be an odd comparison, but the music from this game sounds like “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” at some point. Or maybe that’s because I saw “Manhunter” yesterday.

This is such an atrocious game. But everything dealing with Dragonlance (outside of the books) tends to be atrocious.

They made a crappy movie too:

I’m sure there’s an awful radio drama about it that no one knows about.

This review reminded me of the lamest D&D death ever. A character was down to only 2 hit points when a Brownie ran up and stabbed him in the leg. That was .. 2 hit points worth of damage. Yeah, its a shame to die by Brownie.

I feel sorry for you Spoony. I got to play Tunnels of Doom on Ye Olde Texas Instruments when I was a kid. For its time (1982), it was awesome. You should look up the game and try it-they have emulators for it.

  • Ruiner

I still can't help but chuckle at the price tag on”Ye Olde Cardboard Scroll” Spoony is holding at the start of this. It really says something about Spoony's talent at snarking in general when you consider a person like me, who has barely any knowledge of the D&D universe (besides knowing that the franchise exists, and Spoony's explanation via his V logs) can still be entertained by these reviews after seeing them atleast 9-10 times.

  • Ronin_the_Silent

Wow, the Wikipedia article for this game was oddly positive. Seeing as the references for how notoriously bad it was were already laid out, I went and fix'd it for 'ya :3

Dear lord, is this is bad game. It truly is awful! When I first played, I kept trying to go across the pit, but what you know, I wasn't supposed to. What game starts you off in front of a door and then expects you to go through it?
Even though I do not play D&D and don't even plan to, he balances his nerdiness with common knowledge well.

  • Sylveria

This was the first game I ever played when I got my NES back when I was 4 years old. I had the same obsession with that massive chasm on the right side of the screen. I think I played the game for about 20minutes before I gave up. When I saw Spoony's review, now 20 years after nightmares have faded, my first thought was “That game had a menu screen?” x.x

Never played this but going by what I saw, short guys don’t get hit by that flying shit… and going by rpg conventions, you probly wanna walk around w the thief mostly… and it makes sense wizards die easily(according to convention)… and I imagine magic would make it infinately easier if it wasn’t so poorly done…. i member seeing this at the rental place way back when and being enamored by the idea of it after enjoying faxanadu….

Oh man I LOVED the Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends books probably more then even LotR..
But when I got that game for Christmas in the early 90s jesus was that a good way to piss all over the Dragonlance name.

Forgotten Realms got cool games like the Pool of Radiance series and Dragonlance got that crap??

The problem with this game is how counterintuitive it is. A side-scroller design for what is ultimately a maze game, having to hunt through scrolling menu after scrolling menu to do things, cheap enemies…
This game was for a console that had Gauntlet, JRPG’s, and even Ultima conversions, all done well. This game reeks of license conversion: some company created a shitty rpg, picks up a TSR license, and thus changes a few graphics and slaps the Dragonlance name on their shitty game. When the SSI games–which had 2-frame animations, basic (and BASIC) graphics, and most of their special features as pack-ins instead of on the discs (done for anti-piracy reasons, granted)–outshine a game for a console whose other rpg’s match if not outshine computer rpg’s…that game being outshined is utter crap–but still “good” (HA!) enough for the Nintendo Seal of Approval!

I admit, the game seems rather Horrid, and truth be told, I never thought they had created a game for one of my personal favorite book series. This is not how the series should be remembered. All the same, it is there.

I believe the game itself should have been a bit more turn-based, much like a DnD game itself. Leveling up the characters as such. Probably asking a bit to much, but that would have been a bit better for it.

As someone who was introduced to D&D BY Dragonlance, and still loves the setting and series to this day, this game is a MAJOR insult. I played the older AD&D games on the Commodore 64, even managing to beat Secret of the Silver Blades, a game my father-a former D&D fan-couldn’t beat until I introduced him to Gamefaqs. If they’d made a Dragonlance game like THAT-and they may have, I need to check on that-that would have been awesome. But this…this is just an abomination.

Champions of Krynn and Dark Queen of Krynn both use the same engine as Secret of the Silver Blades.

I actually like the music to this game. It’s actually pretty catchy if you can seperate from the anger the game causes. Around 6:00 or so, it looked you were dancing to it with Goldmoon. Funny stuff!

I actually played the game to completion as a kid… man, the things we did to stave off boredom before the internet.

Had this on Spectrum, can’t remember if it was much different but I completed it. The best part of it was that it came with Dragons of Autumn Twilight, which led me into the D&D thing, so it gets props for that at least.

Blind Guardian has a song about Raistlin – “The Soulforged”. It’s beyond brilliant.

Too bad they also made a song about Wheel of Time, which is the crappiest of the crappy fantasy series I’ve read.

      • Anonymous

I believe they have several songs about the series. On their latest there’s two; apart from Wheel of Time there’s also Ride Into Obsession. Good songs, though.

“I’m stabbing him in the face, he is punching me in the nuts and I can’t do anything about it.” That was some epic D&D fight XD

I don’t know why, but that line makes me think of Dwarf Fortress Adveturer mode :D

Kind of surprised he never noticed that that menu screen shows “Take” on it, like take an item. Watched the Speedrun just now, and wow, this game is easy if you know the route.

I do remember playing it on PC, and it was a little better, but hard to understand, just like the X-Men game a lot like it. Think the same team made Captain America and Spider-Man in Doctor Dooms Revenge.

why do most computer versions of d&d games suck?

    • Anonymous

Well you answered your own question there.
Cos they are based on D&D.

  • palidinoflight

one of the dnd computer games i would recomend is ruins of mythdranor not only does it have a series of books bout it (myth dranor) but it’s actually pretty good if you don’t mind reloading your save quit a few times   IT ACTUALLY DOES HAVE RPG you talk to people you can say different things and do differint things like there is a person behind a door that requests a item (a pretty good one) you can keep it and ignore them give it to them or if you do good you can show it to them and get them to open the door before they take it and you get a similar item from them kinda fun to k….. opps spoilers i actually never beat it my computer crashed after i completed the dungion oh and you can start with a party of 1 to 4 and there are recruitable charactors along the way like the near death fighter and the “Stoned” mage  …….. anyway HURRY YOU FOOLS and play it.

I thought Myth Drannor was so bad that I tried to return it to my friend who purchased it for me – and I paid nothing for it! Anyhoo, he thought it was equally crap and wouldn’t take it back lol.  I think it was the movement system which just did my head in the end end.

      • palidinoflight

Wow late reply . ummm well give it another shot :/? cuse I said so.

        • banedon

I did. Still think it’s crap :D. (equally late post)

I remember playing this game – I actually had the original box and everything. It was really really REALLY rubbish lol.  I love DragonLance but boy was this title a super lemon.

Ive not watched this review in a few years.  Spoony sounds so much like avgn in this review.  I know in Bayou Billy review from same time period he did say he is not trying to copy avgn, but sounds that way here.  Though, it didnt take long before Spoony developed his own uniquish style.

Hopefully Spoony will do some more video games reviews soon, especially FMV Hell.  I know he has another FF review that will be out soon.

Those dwarves are “gully dwarves” in the book.
In the book they are not very intelligent and harmless – Raistlin actually enspelled them to help the party .
