Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and all that jazz! No matter what Santa you pray to, I’ll give you a quick rundown of the best and worst of 2008!
I think for worst movie you should’ve had Disaster Movie. Shit from beginning to end. And for a dissapointing game, I would’ve gone with the new Banjo-Kazooie.
Is “The Spirit” as bad as “Disaster Movie” or “Quarantine”?
I personally agree with most you say, though I do actually like LBP, your points are well taken. They did fix the search features recently, more for an fyi. Like the new website design btw:D
I agree with your assessments. I think Gears of War 2 is just like the original. And I liked the game until they start taking away the weapons I collected. And the last boss was pathetic.
Any chance we’ll see a full review of The Spirit or Quantum of Solace? Also, just curious, have you seen Gran Torino?
On disappointing games I’d like to give a shout for spore. While i totally agreed with your assesment of Too Human, I cant help feeling spore was an even worse offender in the over-hyped yet underwhelming realm. The media talked Spore up out of the stratosphere and it was achingly dull to play.
In regards to LBP, there is one thing that was really dissapointing about it that I’m surprised was not mentioned, the fact that this could have been the game that would have saved the PS3 from the rut it’s in right now.
Look I’m not saying I don’t like the PS3, I like the PS3, I’m just not a fan of what Sony have done since their infamous E3 2006 presentation which to me was the start of all the problems they have gone through with the PS3. The truth is LBP could have been the game that would have drawn a lot of interest to the console, I mean you don’t get many games like it these days…I know I’m starting to sound like one of those gamers who feel we should all be buying the likes of Okami, Psychonauts and Zack And Wiki (which I all have) and should leave the likes of Halo, Madden and Gears Of War on the shelves, but to be honest I’ve really just not gotten into LBP as much as I hoped I would.
I’m not saying it’s a bad game, I’d still play it occasionally just to see what other people have come up with on the level editor, I just find it a bit of a let down
You’re completely right about Little Big Planet’s controls, and that 80% of the stuff that folks upload is terrible. Give people a Youtube-style community and they will abuse it: law of the internet.
I think that calling The Spirit a horrible movie is a little over the top. It isn’t going to win any awards, but it certainly wasn’t the worst movie out there. The goofiness and over-the-topness was done on purpose because the series itself isn’t that serious. It’s just not what they advertised.
As for the disappointing games, I figured that you would have mentioned the new Need for Speed or maybe the new Tomb Raider. As for best games I’m surprised that most people don’t even mention handheld titles like Crisis Core or The World Ends with You. Those games are way better then half the garbage on the consoles and I think they should get recognition.
I’m surprised you pulled out LBP as your “most overrated title.” I can see where you are coming from, but I kinda feel that there are some other titles better suited for that position. Personally, I did not find Grand Theft Auto IV as compelling as everyone made it out to be. Not that it is a bad game by any means, just that the press made it out to be the second coming of video games. Of course, the backlash from said press is pretty obvious on most forums.
By the way, I highly recommend seeing “Doubt,” starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep. It’s just received a wide-release and is at most theaters. Just wanted to throw that in there.
Love the site (and the new design) and I’m looking forward to the conclusion to Phantasmagoria. I check the site every day. You’re doing a great job.
i hate little big planet too! its just so annoyingly frustrasting
hey you do know that the crystal skulls ARE REAL, some people do they think are made by aliens, which i dont think that is true, but anyways crystal skull are real maybe that won’t make you hate the movie as much
As a fan of MGS, it saddens me to say that my most overrated game of 2008 would be MGS4. While I think the actual game was good, the story was a complete mess. I don’t mind long cut scenes if they’re entertaining, but Hideo Kojima’s insistence of tying up every single lose threat just turned the whole thing into a disaster, especially when they spent another twenty minutes talking about the plot – AFTER THE END CREDITS HAD STARTED ROLLING
I don’t agree with you on LBP. It’s obviously not going to be a game that appeals to everyone. But the way i think of it is kind of the way you might think about fanfiction – most of it is bollocks, some two dimensional story about buffy and angel finally getting to shag without negative consequences just because the writer is fifteen and can’t get his mind off of sex. But every now and again, you come across something that is so wonderfully written you wonder why the author isn’t a professional writer. I think we’ll see something similar with LBP, only you look past the crap, you’ll see so wonderfully creative levels. Sometimes the amateurs come up with better stuff than the so-called professionals
I love spoony.
Always fun to hear your views and sarcasm, however it sounds like you only watch blockbuster films. Which is missing out on many other great films.
Otherwise great video!
What !? No Disaster Movie in the worst of 2008 !
Maybe you thought that you did not even deserve to be call a movie…so you did not put in the list
I agree with most of the things ^^
tho, Max Payne the movie was terrible! really THE worst movie ever made in 2008, postal on its hand, was just being postal :P
I argee with spooney on Fallout 3, got it for xmas and its one of the funnist games i’ve played for ages. The soundtrack is brilliant to listern to, epsically when going round blow ghouls and super muntants brains out!
Nah, I’d say Crystal Skull is decent enough and nice to see one more Indiana Jones adventure, why not do another?
Nothing to say on MGS4? I’m probably going to get to try it soon
Never played little big planet, i hated GTA IV.
Nice job on the whole Most Overrated Game thing. I thought for certain Super Smash Bros. Brawl would come up but you actually made an interesting and great choice for it.
I LOVE the game The Last Remnant – there is a ton of good gameplay in there, IGNORE the crappy reviews since most player reviews are glowing.
I also got Persona 4, haven’t tried it yet since my PS2 is at my university res room.
I’m at my cousin and his wife’s place right now and tonight he was playing Fallout 3… what a dreary game… :), BUT, the atmosphere in the outdoor areas is pretty awesome.
i loved MGS4 and Fallout 3 but overrated game is GTA4 dont get me wrong i like it but it not hype what it up to be.and i loved left 4 dead
Hay Noah I dont know if its the same in America but over here in britian the movie critics have given “The Spirit” really good feed. I know its Bullsh*t!
I agree about little big planet.
It doesn’t even play that well.
What’s the song playing during the breaks between segments? I remember hearing it years ago and loving it, but I cannot for the love of all things holy remember what it is!
You should really play Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 & 4. They are some of the best rpgs EVER
Wise choice with Royksopp ^.*
Knew Crystal Skull would make it. Look, whoever commented that the skulls are real- yes, there are real crystal skulls that some people think are made by aliens. We know this because Lucas got his man-panties in a twist about them. The reason this Indy movie had to be about those freaking skulls is because Lucas loved the idea of them and would not approve ANY script that did not focus on them. The word is that there were good, non-skull, non-idiotic scripts but…Lucas wanted skulls, so screw the audience.
Oh, and Noah- the reason John Rhys-Davies wasn’t in this movie wasn’t that he was too good for it (although he was). He actually went on record that he wanted to be in it. But Lucas, blast him, didn’t think the character would be involved in this plot because…he was middle eastern.
Good call Lucas. Bring the franchise back but figure there’s no reason to bring back a beloved character. Crystal Skulls, that makes sense. A man traveling outside his country…that’s just crazy.
Ok. I got a bad movie I want you to rant about. I think it came out in 2006… the movie is so bad its funny.. I’m not joking when I seen the movie I was laughing my head off. the problem is I dont know if it was meant to be funny.. well the movie is machine girl. if you want a now how bad it is… just look. ((http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSpCWJnnWVI)) I’m not going to say much about it. but please give it a watch. the only reason I remember this movie all the people how die in the movie is so funny! I mean it. please give it a look. you really need to. enjoy this piece of crap…. but the deaths are so funny! XD
How about Fable 2. Definitely most disappointing.
I totally agree with you 100% about LittleBigPlanet ! When I first saw it and heard the reviews, I was like what the hell? There are way better games out there than that. I just…I don’t get the appeal either.
More Royksopp! and get on G4 TV for goodness sake!
I feel I’m gonna get my ass kicked for this but I have no idea why everyone drools about Dark Knight. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it was a good movie, but not as half freakin’ great as people says it is. But still, one of the best movies of the year.
IN BRUGES! Goddamn…
God ya, that movie was SO BAD. My friend and I saw it, hoping for at least some cool zombie shit, we didn’t even get that.. it was just bad. I was SO glad the bitch died too. Most annoying character in the movie.
whoops, wrong place for my comment above
Okay, well, a very delayed comment but I’ve only just seen this and I just wanted to state a little input. I definately see your argument on how LBP was over-rated. Your points are valid and accepted. Now 2 things I want to state before I continue: 1) I think your MST3000 style reviews are awesome. I’ve only recently found your site and I’ve already saw all of your game reviews thus far. 2) I love LBP. I personally think it is a great game and very creative. I could go into my points to counter your points but thats not my gripe. As I said, your points are valid and everyone is entitled to an opinion. The problem I had was your tone. This wasn’t just your opinion, this was fact. Anyone who loves this game (alot of us too, according to how you say it) is dumb, blind, and simply don’t know a good game if it bites us in the ass. I found it insulting to me, it went from insulting the game to insulting the players of the game. Anywho, thats my gripe. Everything else was pretty solid.
And to “phoenix” (once again, late comment so doubt you’ll see this) Machine Girl is, indeed, a comedy. It’s almost like the “Another Movie” movies only done well. It doesn’t parody any old movie and laced with stupid corny jokes but more of recreates the old, low-budget, kungfu gore movies. I found it hilariously bad too but, then again, that means it did its job. I heard a sequel it coming out. My worry is if they’ll put in a higher budget this time. That would certainly ruin it.
I loved this video. I disagree with you about the best films of the year, though. My top 5 looks something like this.
1. Slumdog Millionaire
2. Frozen River
3. In Bruges
5. Let the Right One In
I thought GTA IV was very overrated, but it’s still a fantastic game with great writing. My top 5 games of the year list looks like this.
1. Fallout 3
2. Grand Theft Auto IV
3. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
5. Space Invaders Extreme
One last thing, I hated The Dark Knight and I’m thirteen years old! I liked Heath Ledger a lot, but it’s overall a really pretentious movie that didn’t deserve all the praise it got.
Me and my friends watched In the Name of the King (we’re big Ray Liotta fans, as in fans of watching him fail to do any non-mob character well) and it just looked like a poorly done Lord of the Rings ripoff. I swear to God, when they showed the scene where they were walking across that snow-covered mountain, it was pretty much a direct copy of the similar scene in LotR. Hell, we had to rewind the movie just to make sure we all weren’t losing our minds.
You know when you mention the film Quarantine I don’t know if you had watched the original called rec which is far superior in my opinion. also your videos are great keep it up.
Fallout 3 i loved i agree towards the end it gets a bit rushed i think it should have allowed you to carry on roaming around afterwards with updates coming from online this would have been brilliant as you don’t get to see what you have accomplished when choosing what to do at the end when you save the world but send the girl in instead or you poison the purifier i would like to see repercussions of these.
Iron Man was kick ass, i also really enjoyed Burn After Reading (“he thinks its a schwin” cracks me up every time),Dark Night was ok. However my favorites would involve burn after reading and i really enjoyed street kings.
if you want to look at to awfully (and i mean awful) good films look for Totally Awesome and UHF (it has wierd al yankovich in it).
Late reply, but here goes. I always enjoy your insight Spoony. It’s nice to see opinions from the same type of mindset, whether I agree or not. Didn’t see or play much of this year’s media though. I’m seriously considering finding the nearest Uwe Boll flick sometime, just to experience the terror. I bet it’s like a train wreck, only I’m in the son of a bitch.
The only thing I can think to hate you for is calling the Katamari Demacy soundtrack terrible. :P
you dont like transporter :(
i like it. its stupid fun!!!! just saying
i loved the new punisher film too. it was fun stupidity. i like bad movies : )
your lack of enthusiasm for little big planet enrages me. but whatever. i love that game!!! my most disappointing game was resistance 2. im not sure exactly when that came out though. but the best was definitely mgs4
eh if you dont care about little big planet its your problem its just…
well i kind of agree its kind of pointless…
i man the campain (if you can even call it that) is very boring and stupid.
but the level editor is so creative it keeps drawing me back…
i gotta say, i agree with most of those statements. however, i think you’re forgetting one game in particular: The Force Unleashed. on Wii, it had that awesome lightsaber combat stuff, and on 360 it had the “revolutionary” physics engine that was pretty sweet to fool around with. Force unleashed should have been in there somewhere.
I’m surprised you didn’t like Littlebig Planet. I found it fun, creative and all that. Sure, I agree it’s kind of pointless, but sometimes pointlessness is fun. That’s basically the idea of sandbox games. Well, some reaally great levels have spawned over time by now. But I suppose it doesn’t matter. It’s your opinion. And no mention of MGS4? :(
Anyway, I’d give a special mention to Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Something about that movie really touched me. You should watch it (if you haven’t already by now). I’m hoping you’re not one of those people who’ll say this movie is incredibly boring and pointless.
speaking up for the Command and Conquer Series, of which i am a BIG fan of. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 isn’t that good, i’ll admit that. The series was a victim of being bought out by EA. Up until RA2 it was still being made by it’s original studio. After that, and when the series tanked, it wa merged into EA:LA, and given to people that didn’t know the story. I mean i totally don’t get it, partially bc the original games are really hard and long, but the beginning of RA3 basically destroys the continuity of the series worse than the new Startrek. My recomendation is buy RA2, it should work on most computer that don’t run vista, or the new Command and Conquer: The First Decade
And Spoony for not liking Real Time Stratiegy, why do you own Red Alert 2 and World in Conflict.(I own Both).
I adore LittleBigPlanet.
I’d say just two things you’ve forgotten:
1. Disaster Movie for one of the worst movies of the year. It just plain sucked.
2. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 for one of the best games. It’s a little too similar to the Rainbow Six Vegas 1, but it’s still just really good!
God bless Spoony for taking on LBP. It’s not the worst game ever and it’s not a bad game in general, but it’s overrated. I would give it a perfect 10/10 if it were a $10 budget title, but it isn’t. When a game is $60, it should be held to a much higher standard, and LBP doesn’t meet that standard. For $60, it’s worth maybe 6 or 7 out of 10 at most.
most overrated game – fallout3 (overall its a weak game thats got nothing going for it other then the enviroment)
worst game of the year – *caugh fallout3 caugh* (yes i really do hate the game this much)
Come on Spoony. You just said u don’t hate Little Big Planet caus it’s imature and 1 minute later you’re pointing out your too old for it. That means it’s too imature for you. WTF
Still a great review and looking forward your reviews.
Dressing dolls is immature for every age.
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 was pretty easy. Then again, with the co-op commander doing half your work for you, each stage was only half as difficult as it could have been. Also the Red Alert series has become very campy. Red Alert 2 was with its time travel plot, and Red Alert 3 was even more so with its counter time travel plot. Then again, I think a lot of that has to do with the introduction of the time travel mechanics which tends to make any world less real and less believable. It also has the added problem of erasing your previous work in other games and causes continuity problems. Which is what really sent Heroes down the tubes IMO (We saved the cheerleader and the world and killed Sylar, oh noes we didn’t!). Still the acting/voice acting was very good with Tim Curry really hamming it up as the Russian premier, Jenny McCarthy giving us a blonde Tanya (another product of timeline tinkering I suppose) fighting with your liason Eve played by Gemma Atkinson for the allied commander’s attention, George Takei as the Emperor, Kelly Hu, and even more babes like Natasha and Dasha. Even the voice acting of your NPC commander allies was decent. The music was just awesome for Red Alert 3, especially the Russian soundtracks with Hell March returning. I like some of the Allied tracks too like How the West Was Won. The Empire soundtracks I did not particularly care for, but then again I am not a fan of the Empire’s transformers army either. Still I have to admit the coolness of things like the sub/fighter when the Japanese were actually trying to make a sub that could hold a plane like a mini-aircraft carrier in WWII and the special weapon of balloon bombs that the Japanese were trying to develop to hit the western coast of the USA in WWII making an appearance. Red Alert 3 made a lot of nods to history and a lot of nods to Red Alert 2 as well and is a real fan game I’d say. I enjoyed it, it was worth the money for the new video/graphics card and the game.
I still think Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars was a lot better because for one thing it was a lot harder without another general doing half the work and also more satisfying since you got to conquer the whole level. It also featured some really great acting by Michael Ironside as the GDI general (I usually refer to him as Razak, of the Roughnecks, Starship Troopers was awesome), they got the original Kane to return, and even Lando is in it as a seedy treasurer for the GDI. The used actual news reporters reporting on the events in the game which gave it a lot of propaganda feel to the plot scenes. It really did feel like a work of future science fiction and revealed a lot about what was actually going on with the tiberium. There were a lot of challenging missions and even unlockable missions for beating both the GDI and NOD campaigns. The final battle for GDI even had two different endings based on your actions in the final battle. The expansion, Kane Edition was fantastic too, since it revealed a lot about what was going on behind the scenes during seemingly low points of NOD activity, and Natasha Henstridge was an added bonus. It was still too easy and the lack of missions for GDI hurt it, but still pretty good. Overall, I was surprised that I liked this one a lot more than Red Alert 3, but the truth is that although Red Alert pulled me into the RTS genre and the original Tiberium War games just did not seem that great in comparison, it seems like the Red Alert series and Tiberium Wars series went into different directions, one went down as time travel kept screwing up the plot and the other up as it built up towards the big reveal of what has really been happening to the earth for the greater part of a century.
I am just hoping for Command and Conquer Generals 2 at this point though. I am ready for some more USA/China/GLA action. Still how many series have three different plot arcs/worlds? Command and Conquer, the CSI of gaming!
Ragnarok is not a norse god. Its norse religions armageddon.
Dang did you ever put LBP in it’s place. I own it and the most fun I ever had with it was grabbing a mate and dragging him to his doom. Otherwise it’s a definite MEH game.
Oh and you meant J K Simmonds, the guy that played J Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man movies, J K Rowling was the author of the Harry Potter books. :P
I just Don't Like Burn After Reading, I love the other C.Bros Films but I just really didn't like it.And I have to ask If that movie had been From Uva Boel(I don't give enough of a fuck to spell it right) Would you have liked it as much?
i personally love littlebigplanet, HOWEVER… i hate how they have no PAINT system, at least none that i know of! seriously, do i REALLY have to use the crappy stickers to paint something? using stickers is both limited and frustrating!
they better have a paint system in littlebigplanet 2…
LBP is a poor game, I played it through, and kinda liked it, made some levels, played some other peoples levels and it was, as spoon says, unoriginal, frustrating and kind of pointless. However, I did really like the the lighting effects. I made a level based on light puzzles, inspired by one of the levels in the game, and that I found to be very rewarding. Even if it did take ages to make. Go play 'castlevania – symphony of the night' instead of this if you wanna play a platformer I say. Go!
IJ 4 wasn't THAT bad, plus, dude! You forgot about Disaster Movie!
Kinda funny how LBP is the only game I own on the PS3. And I love it.Although I agree with your statements. If your not good at making a map, your going to not enjoy making a map, not to mention even if you do, almost no one will play it because there are far better maps. But that doesn't stop the millions of people that post maps that are total shit. Its annoying when I have to search through tons of maps just to find a good one.
But when you do find a good one, its worth it. I really enjoy bomb survivals, myself.

I’m disappointed in you Spoony, fair enough if you didn’t like LBP that’s your opinion, but for a critic to misunderstand the game to the point that you did was actually like…really disheartening. I think I might have to enforce an “AVGN rule” on you and only give a fuck about what you say about old games.
Ach, Spoony! Stop using my cellphone ringtone as your transition theme! Every five minutes I was checking up my cell and going “oh, right, fuck” XD
The song is Eple by Royksopp. God that’s been nagging me for so long…
I fucking LOVE LittleBigPlanet. I thought it was amazing and consider it one of hte most fun and creative platformers that I have played since fucking Mario. I liked it that much
LBP is great I must say. I have had really fun with it, and so did my 5 siblings (9-18 years old). However, I bought the game half a year ago, so it did only cost like 150 SEK ~ 20 $, if not less. And because of the age of the game, there are a lot of good online maps with good quality and high ranking. But I still think that the main game/story is funnier and yeah, it was fun to play in co-op.
Apparently you don’t like Postal 2, huh? Well then, make a Let’s play of it! I think it’s the kind of game that would really work with your commentary on it.
Actually, some of the best levels I played in LBP are the ones made by users. Granted, most are not good. But some are really creative, cinematic, and fun.
LBP is like borderlands. Its only fun when you have atleast 1 friend. I only play it when I’m with my gf.
Romero needs to stop trying to use the Found Footage formula; it doesn’t work for him.
