Deadliest Warrior Game Review

En garde, ya scurvy dawg!

  • HanukkaHarry

    Awesome work as always Spoony!

Plus the intro was awesome. “This game is fucking retarded!”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=553179795 Brandon Viljoen

Ive got it, i thought it was pretty great.

  • yetiboy

wow, they screwed a fighter up.

    how… incompetent.

  • MissAshley

. . .Did anyone even bother to playtest this before release? And if they did, did those testers actually enjoy themselves playing it?

A game like this at this point in gaming's history just doesn't make sense.

    • Anonymous

All the testers were high on PCP.

Maybe they just saved themselves a few bucks and got a chimp called Mr. Biggles to fool around with the controller and then claimed the game was tested.

    Wow…that game is completely…there I say…HELLA LAME!

Christ…the TV show isn't any better. I mean…fucking hell this is stupid. I have friends that love the show and when I try to explain to them why it's stupid and incorrect, they try to defend it. Fucking hell…Spike is going WAY down hill here.

  • http://twitter.com/melandor0 Lars Larsson

You sound like you just watched Impact or something at the beginning there… Ouch.

  • Cthulhu07

A crappy game based on a crappy tv-show. 'nuff said.

  • http://twitter.com/VillainIsLemony Caitlin J

    Great opening line. xD

      ‘Cept they’re not.

  • mrwednesdaynight

I can appreciate your more theatric reviews but I kind of like this old Spoony approach too.

  • bloodhowl

    WORST! GAME! EVER! XD

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

      JUDGES?!?!? *BUZZER*

  • mrwednesdaynight

I appreciate your more theatric approach to reviewing but I like this minimalist approach as well. Its a lot like some of your older reviews. Handle your business anyway you like but you can't imagine how much I laughed when this video just started out of no where, with no intro or anything, with “This game sucks!”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KJUMDDZQFQZHUQAWJAC4BNJVBY SlashPrower

    A game review? From Spoony?

Truly the gods have answered my prayers.

  • http://twitter.com/iRiffMoleman J_Masterbassist

“Controls about as accurate as the spinning cup ride out fucking Disneyland”

    Best quote ever!

  • Necro_Critic

Well, there's ten bucks you'll never see again.

  • ilikethismorethanlinkara

Oh come on, the TV show isn't that bad. Sure, it is inaccurate and scientifically incorrect, but I just like seeing things get gored with explosives, along with the fights at the end. I got pissed off too at all the poor analysis at first, but I later just learned to just not think about this show too much. As for this game… my friend has it, and we played it, it was OK. I hope that if they release DLC, it is free, because they obviously forgot to add something to this game, it just seems unfinished with game breaking attacks and only eight fighters.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mitch-Uwe-Bentcover/1303073466 Mitch Uwe Bentcover

Hey, I liked the game. When you play with friends it gets pretty competitive. Maybe im just more forgiving.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Treima Jimi Alexander

Been waiting to see you tear something a new one (other than wrestling). Nice little five minutes of unbridled wrath. It's like a Zero Punctuation except I can actually understand half the words coming out of your mouth.

  • RROD_Healer

Spoony, you've been update crazy recently.

Good evening Spoony and fellow Spooners.

    1. Part of me kind of hoped he'd end the review right after the first line. Not that the rest of the review isn't good; it's just the shock of such a quick, HARSH review could have been funny. But in the end, with Spoony, more is always better.
    2. As for the rest of the review, I SO wish I could've heard Spoony react to that spear through the head for the very first time.

  • Sexual_Tyrannosaurus

Oh I think forgiving is a grievous understatement.

  • rosenrot234

funniest intro I've seen so far. as well as the fight. my friend and i both went OHHHHHHHHHHHHH very loud seeing the spartan win. if you call being a broken cheater like that a win. it was still hilarious

  • http://twitter.com/lopsidedmammal Richey Hackett

I only just watched Miles and Spoony talking about Deadliest Warrior earlier today and now this is up! Great to see that the whole DW “franchise” is maintaining it's high level of shiteness. A fighting game where injuries are realistic to the point of a player dying from one attack might be an interesting premise, but it's also fucking boring and does nothing to encourage the player to persevere with the game when they can get taken out so easily. In a word: BALLS.

  • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael "Skitch" Schiciano

That still doesn't excuse how cumbersome it is to change characters in the middle of an online match, which is the biggest draw against the game in that category. The game is nothing but infuriating when it comes to reliable results, and in many cases doesn't really promote good deep strategy as much as knowing which attack almost cannot be blocked effectively, and spamming it.

It really could've been nice, but it's simply not that great or sustainable of a game, and offers at most cheap laughs (well, as cheap as this game was to make, not to buy), and at worst a headache.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

I agree on the online thing, but that’s being patched.

If you can’t block it, dodge it.

      • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael “Skitch” Schiciano

Yeah, but I don’t find the dodging controls (or really, movement or any control in general) to be reliably responsive enough to make a big difference.

And I’m mainly talking about tactics where even dodging doesn’t work that well depending on the context, and especially versus the computer…trying to use any level of skill of dodging or the such ultimately didn’t work as well as rushing in and spamming an attack against the CPU to win battles, even on the higher difficulty levels.

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/114319313498601954245 Kaltzor

Fair Play 102: One shot your opponent with a spear to the head before they can even react.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

      Protip: Dodge.

  • pawcanada84

This was awesome! As much as I love the more plot/script driven reviews, this “quicky” worked so well.

I have to admit, on paper this sounds like an interesting, and perhaps even slightly original concept – having a “class” based fighting game with Bushido Blade style realistic physics (as opposed to say Soul Calibur's “It's just a flesh wound” angle when they get a fricking broad sword in the face), but it's a shame they didn't do it properly. Perhaps if they tried to make it into more this could have worked. Oh well. Maybe someone else will do it justice next time.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

Perhaps if you tried it, you’d find that it’s actually fair (except for the Ninja and the Viking’s double spear, but that’s why it’s being patched, no?).

  • http://twitter.com/NDrakkon Adam Brocklehurst

Even with the intro I was lulled into a false sense of optimism when I saw the pirate nonchalant light his cigar and then pull the pistol out. *Spear meet head* Anticlimactic. Which is very strange because I thought my cynicism and sarcasm had bludgeoned my optimism into a coma.

    Great review though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mattias-Granlund/100000618693819 Mattias Granlund

fun concept, really REALLY bad execution, if the game had the same depth as Bushido blade it could have been sweet, but clearly they dropped the ball then dropped a dump on it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

It kinda does have similar depth, actually. Not QUITE as much, but it’s close from what I’ve seen from both.

  • specterm91

Hey Spoony, you ever played Time Killers? It's pretty much a sillier version of this. It wasn't awful, the dismemberment concept worked and all, but most characters had simple little attacks that'd lop your head off right out of the gate.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Derek-Ellis/688797056 Derek Ellis

And to think I was kinda excited when I saw that Deadliest Warrior was making a game… I really should have known better…

    -_-;

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

      Have you tried the game?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KQZM4I3JX6F27LT4EM2Y27IFMU Corey

the spartan vs ninja episode in the was just stupid to me because of how one sided it was did they think that would be a close match up, especially when they had ninja stars be used on someone covered in armor.

  • Sylveria

Okay.. this is obviously one of the worst fighting games ever made.. but I pose to Spoony and everyone else.. the most important question of all history…………… Is it worse than Shaq Fu?

  • http://twitter.com/HypnoBusters HypnoBusters

    So you're…not a fan?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mitch-Uwe-Bentcover/1303073466 Mitch Uwe Bentcover

I agree that it's not that great, and the controls suck, but it's fun to play it for 5 minutes or so and piss people off by insta-winning. It's by far not the worst thing I've ever played, but you could do a lot better, and worse. I haven't played online yet, I've only played locally, and generally win every time, due to the pirate's blunderbuss or just that cheap as hell Y combo from the ninja.

I dunno, for everything going against it, it's fun in short bursts, but playing it too long pisses you off.

    • Anonymous

That does NOT make for a good game. Any game that pisses you off within 10 minutes of picking up the controller for a reason other than difficulty, in my opinion, is NOT DONE YET. They released what looks like an Alpha, or Beta at best, and expect you to buy it. I would categorize it under shovelware, if only because one hit kills do not have any place in a balanced fighting game.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

These insta-wins don’t happen very frequently, ya know.

        • Anonymous

Ok, let me put it this way:

          if(game.instantKills > 0) {
          game.score -= 7 }

I've always wondered.. where is WARRIOR in Deadliest Warrior? Then again, he's not deadly.. but he IS ultimate!

I played the demo at my friends house, it was kinda fun to play, but theres no way that I would ever waste money on it. I will admit, the whole spartan spear through the head was pretty funny. It's like they were late for April fools day this year, so they released this game instead. The only other thing that made me chuckle was the idea of Pirate vs. Ninja, I told my friend, “Finally, we can put this to rest in combat!” Then we loaded up the demo and the only selection was ninja and spartan, I would have felt robbed, but yea, free crap is still crap.

  • Booze Zombie

Jesus fucking Christ, how do you let moves like that get in there?

    Wow…

  • http://twitter.com/matt_recneps Matt Spencer

Jeez, “realistic” combat really makes for a broken game. People bitch about infinite combos in other fighting games but one-hit kills like the Spartan's spear are just ridiculous. I'm not going to waste my money on this, so can anyone tell me if moves like that can be blocked/dodged? Or is it just one of those games where if your opponent knows what they're doing you might as well bend over and take it?

  • http://twitter.com/Deimos1984ad Zak Mahmud

Man that spartan is CHEAP!!!!, yeah if I want to fight a ninja as a pirate I'll play Soul Calibur thank you very much.

When the characters' intros are longer than the fucking round itself, you've got a problem. >:P

Try the viking's double spear throw. Most broken attack in the game.

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/114319313498601954245 Kaltzor

Seriously, best game ever! Right there along with such masterpiece as Final Fantaasy 10! …Yea… How hard can it be to make a fighting game that doesn't have cheap attacks that finish off your enemy before the fight even starts…

  • Grishnak

    Nice little review, enjoyed it.

That's gotta mean that “The Deadliest Character” is due soon, right? I really hope so, I'm looking forward to that!

  • Skolex

At least Shaq Fu makes a good drink coaster.

    • http://celluloidandsilicon.blogspot.com/ Avenging_Mike

Shaq Fu does, in fact, not make a good drink coaster. It was a cartridge game, so it was squareish and a half-inch tall, thus making it easy to set your drink off-centre and have it fall off due to gravity.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julien-Gabriel-Gregoire-Berube/100000914758791 Julien-Gabriel Grégoire-Bérubé

I REALLY like how you start the review

  • sifer2

The characters auto aiming projectiles at certain areas might be ok if it made sense. What sense does aiming for the head with a spear make? Your more likely to over shoot an have it fly over their head. And what idiot Ninja would throw his shuriken things at the persons feet? An why does the Pirate take out his pistol an point it at the guy an then put it up? Just shoot him an win the match lol.

Yeah just from seeing a few minutes of gameplay I can tell this one is crap.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

That’s called nit-picking. You have to REALLY be looking for a reason to not like the game to use that as one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Raizoku/710678347 Matthew Raizoku

Yeah great review Spoony. I wasn't going to buy this shit in the first place, I knew this was going to suck balls.

    *Kicks Foxhack down a hole*
    *Rolls eyes*

Spoony, man, why do you punish yourself so? And wasting your money on this atrocity. I'm tutting at you as I type this.

  • IIWebbII

Guess you didn't like it then. I can't say you're wrong dude I wish It was improved in the ways you said, but surely it's not earned this beat-down?

And it's bullshit how most of the commenters haven't even played the game, but based on your 5 minute attack on this otherwise decent fighter, aren't going to try it for themselves and form there own goddamn opinion. Fucking. Morons.

    • http://celluloidandsilicon.blogspot.com/ Avenging_Mike

Let’s see, it’s 1200 Microsoft Points, it has no story mode, 8 generic characters, and a tacked-on time trial thing. Why are you calling people morons for not wasting time and/or money on something so barebones? If it doesn’t seem like it has any redeeming characteristics, I’m not going to go through the hassle of downloading the demo or wasting money on something that is an obvious cash-in with little-to-no effort put in to it. The fact that the characters are unbalanced and matches can end in less than 5 seconds barring entrance animations just further cements the fact that anyone advocating checking out this game “because it’s better than it looks” is the fucking moron.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

800 points NOT 1200, story mode means next to nothing in a fighting game, street fighter 2 had 8 characters as well, and there is no time trial thing. Because it’s not as barebones as you think. It does; he just ignores them in favor of exaggerating most of the mentioned flaws. It’s not an obvious cash it, and there WAS effort put in. If there wasn’t, then why would they be going through the hassle of patching the game? The characters are not as unbalanced as you think (yeah, people claim that the ninja is cheap, but it’s only if you are REALLY predictable), and matches CAN go on for longer than 5 seconds if you or your opponent doesn’t act like an idiot. The only way to really tell if you like this game is if you check it out. I thought it was going to suck, and I was proven wrong. Maybe you would too if you gave it a chance.

Bravo on forming your OWN opinion then. I’m off to enjoy a game despite some of its flaws.

Well at least now I know to enforce my will upon others in this house and forbid them to ever get this.

Why go to the trouble of forming an opinion when Spoony's done all the work for us? Surely you don't understand how the Internet works.

  • Strelnikov

Yes….it looks like it's going to take the pirate's hat off and then – BLAM! right through the goofball's head. I haven't seen graphics that fouled up since the NES.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

That’s not graphics. That’s hit detection. And it can be rather retarded sometimes, but it’s usually not extremely noticeable (except for the pirate pulling off a headshot when the barrel is past the shoulder; dunno what the hell is up with that).

  • walmor

    wow. This was harsh

  • Booze Zombie

Actually, I'm dodging it because it looks very boring and from having seen actual gameplay… it looks very boring.

Well…this game is so~ broken. Although it’s more like Mortal Kombat without special powers.

Able to kill your opponents if you hit it right with the right weapon of choice? Crud, that just wrong if you choose the wrong character to go against.

Just leave it be only the show, this game should not have been made.

  • goodguya

I love this format for quick reviews. Maybe he should do this for downloadable games he gets, good and bad. Obviously you can't go over something like Alan Wake in this amount of time but it's great for small games. I'd love to see more snippets in the future.

You mean there's no dodge?… so you see a guy chucking a spear at you and you DON'T dodge? WHO THE FUCK PROGRAMMED THIS?

Whoever developed the fighting system should be put in an open area and have a Spartan chucking a spear at him, but he can't dodge, no no no, dodging is NOT allowed…

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

      1) You can dodge. Which, more often than not (but not always), STOPS these one-hit-kills from occurring. He either forgot to mention it, or may have possibly decided that it would be convenient to leave out (probably the former, though). The only weapon that’s truly cheap in terms of OHK’s is the Viking’s Double Spear, which is getting nerfed in a future update.
      2) Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I get the feeling that you only think it’s crap because of Spoony’s review. TRUST ME when I say that his review is next to no indication of what the game is like. I really do suggest playing the demo to at least get a taste of the game (although even that’s not a very good indication of the full game).
      3) I’m assuming you’re referring to the flintlock pistol. It’s okay in terms of power. Pretty much like the spears, ‘cept it’s slow to draw it, but shoots fast. Now the blunderbuss, on the other hand, is a power-house. A single perfect non-headshot hit can down half your health. If you can hit cleanly with both shots, it’s a kill.

There is a dodge. In fact, dodging is the best tactic for the non-armored guys like the Pirate, Ninja, and Apache.

  • http://twitter.com/Koda89 Koda Kazar

You can dodge and block. If you have a shield, you can block all projectile/long range attacks. They still do a VERY small sliver of damage, but holding up the shield prevents these one hit long range kills. You can also dodge with the right analog stick.

  • saibot216

    Bushido Blade is the shit.

i still will probaly buy this game if it ever comes to the PS3. just to play when i'm mad at someone so i can preted the person i throw the super accurate spear at is them.

Now if only my friend would agree that the show is stupid and the game is a bigger waste of time then the show is. Like you said “Real men play Tekken!”

  • The_Stig

This is the Spoony I love. SNARK! Though I do wish he'd have belted out the old classic “BULLSHIT!” line when Sean put the spear through his pirate's head. Oh well, it doesn't hurt this vid one bit.

And in this one, you can dodge them (if you have a shield, you can block it as well).

  • warxepb

I had a mote of hope that this game wouldn't be godawful, but damn. This game has barely more substance than the beat-em-ups of old, and it doesn't even look that great for a modern system.

This game would have worked better with some sort of large-scale battle mode – your army of choice is pitted against an enemy's army, with the same mechanics as the 1-on-1 mode, ie. “realistic” damage. But this is based on Deadliest Warrior, a show where fights always boil down to one guy versus another guy, even when the warriors in question are best known for their group tactics.

    Oh well.

  • http://twitter.com/RabidBiscuit Noah J. Horan

What a load. A fighting game needs some goddamned balance, otherwise it's not fun. Consistent results should occur!

A ton of my buddies on my inner Xbox 360 circle told me this game sucked, and thank god I saw this review. 1200 Microsoft points well saved, shit, this game isn't gonna be worth 800 Microsoft points when it gets slashed in price in about 4 months!

  • RogueShadowcat

Spoony can you do a review for blazblue (either calamity trigger or continuum shift idc which) i really wanna hear what your thoughts on those games are, i have both and they rekindled my love for fighting games whereas street fighter just pissed me off more.

  • http://twitter.com/JacobMartin JacobMartin

This game is not available on my console, a PS3 I won for free in a Sydney Morning Herald competition.

I don't generally waste my time on games proven to be horrible. I do enjoy watching people review horrible games so I don't have to play them, however. I liked the Lord of Tekken reference, because I too am a fan of beating up bears in my fighting games. Street Fighter's okay too, but each to his own. Both of my listed examples seem better than this game however, because at least Hadouken doesn't kill you in one hit, nor does a Devil Jin strike attack do the same.

I've never seen Deadliest Warrior, because in Australia we don't have that show yet. Thanks for the heads up though, sounds like the difference between Iron Chef (Japanese version) and MasterChef (the Aussie sensation sweeping the nation to “get back in the kitchen” (the show encourages newbie chefs to attempt cooking at home) as applied to both genders and not a sexist remark for once.)

Good review Spoony, the snark has returned, which means that this game is so horrible even your mild mannered state has been ruptured from its civility due to the game's suckage of arse.

  • RogueShadowcat

Excuse me, sir, Dissidia was actually good. Not without flaws, but it had some cool stuff going for it. Like actual 3D fighting instead of same good old 2D with moveable plane tacked on, like in Tekken? Or the fact that you actually have to use your reaction right and not just mash whatever. Stats bullshit pretty much ruined it, though, that might be true, but at least developers tried.

I will probably get a lot of flak for this, but I kind of like the idea of this game. I mean I REALLY hate the show entirely, but I do love Bushido blade 1 and 2. It is just a concept that needs to be done more. Quick, bloody battles that leave you worried about every fight to the death. If this game was refined it would be great, sadly I think I will stick to my PS2 then…

  • devilfish

I hate, hate, HATE it when bad games are so easily redeemable. I just know I'm not the only one who heard about a game where a ninja fights an Apache and a pirate takes on a viking and thought it was the coolest thing ever. And they did this? They had a real chance to distinguish themselves from games like Tekken and other fighting games because of the characters: we all know what a ninja and a viking and a pirate are, we probably played them when we were kids. They're part of the collective consciousness (unlike Kung Fu Grizzly Bear and Kendo Schoolgirl). And then this. They really should have focused on the cool factor and cheeky novelty of pirate vs ninja mutiplayer fighting game, not their bullshit “historical accuracy”. As it stands it falls somewhere between educational and idiotic zany fun without actually being either of those things. Real bad design choice.

But the thing that pisses me off most is that there's already a DLC in the pipeline, apparently. Am I crazy or do I really remember a time when a DLC or expansion or addon was something you did when people really liked your game and wanted more of it? Seems to me that these days it sometimes becomes the entire point of releasing a game. Again: very stupid and very cocky. Your game's not going to sell that well, guys.

I actually was going to give it a try, just based on my vague hope that there would still be some cool factor in watching a pirate and an Apache duke it out (like those segments of the show, they really are entertaining enough) but after seeing this, well, all I can do is thank Spoony for telling me not to waste my money.

TL;DR: one of those failed “let's make history fun!” attempts. They should have stuck with the zany non-nonsensical cool factor of it.

    • Anonymous

yeah what the hell IS the deal with EVERY single game not only having DLC, whether it was called for or not, but you outright can’t buy the damn complete game anymore without it in many cases. you are literally being cheated out of your full game becuase of this shit. i don’t do the x box live thing (i find playing online makes me want to hunt down and kill every schmuck on that headset) and i resent that i can pay 60 bucks for something and still get screwed out of a finished game. even great games like mass effect try to fuck you (i have never even seen these two dlc characters, and every time i walk past that part of ship i know they stand in when you get them, it just pisses me off) I resent that there are story elements, characters, and all kinds of other fun i just can’t have cuz (as the commercials would have you believe) that i am an undeserving loser for actually going outside, getting some sun, having real flesh and blood friends, and actively seeking the company of women, instead of pissing away every cent in my wallet and second of my day with a fucking headset on talking to some 20 yr old manchild answering to “chodemaster69″ or some such shit who spends the whole time whining that i’m “cheating” and i’m a “noob” cuz i keep smashing his neon orange spartan in the face with a gravity hammer. fuck that shit.

I think movies started it. with the “deleted scenes and special features” shit. that stuff was almost always there, but when peter jackson made the lord of the rings, they managed to sell 3 WHOLE COPIES of EACH film based entirely on all the extra footage they didn’t use cuz they could just keep ringing out more money. it worked so well, i am convinced that since then, people delibrately film scenes they KNOW they can’t use just to plaster the fact that it’s on the dvd everywhere to make you buy it…twice. i mean how many times have you bought a movie, only to have the “special super unrated fully remastered ultimate directors cut renegade edition” come out 3 weeks later? DLC is just the evolution to gaming of this same annoying trend.

DLC should ENHANCE the gameplay of an already completed game, a game that was so awesome in and of itself that you just needed MORE, it should NOT be a way to fill in the gaps you couldn’t bother with before launch date and ninja rape 10-20 more bucks out of you so you can play a game YOU ALREADY BOUGHT! look gaming companies, if you need the extra ten bucks that bad, just charge me 70 bucks a game and FUCKING FINISH IT!!! I may not like it, but at least i’d respect you more

  • Logion

The main flaw that I think is entirely unforgivable is that the game fucking LAGS. It's not unusual that if both fighters strike at each other, the game can lag for a second and then you will see the hit detection. That cannot exist in a fighting game! The game is broken and should be removed from xbox live arcade. Who the hell at Microsoft thought this was a game good enough for the Marketplace!?

  • http://www.saisasylum.com/ Sai

Yeah this is why absolute realism in a fighting game is a really shitty idea.

But holy crap Bushido Blade! I loved that game as a kid. I never remember it feeling unbalanced either, it was pretty sophisticated for a PS1 game (even if all the characters were really stupid looking.)

Personally, I really enjoyed this game, and found it a really enjoyable fighter.
Then again, I also love the TV show, while Spoony hates it, so that might me a factor as to our differing opinions.
That and I hate games like halo, maybe my taste is just different.
Either way, this is still fun to watch, mostly just to see Spoony flip out at the spear.

I can't remember how many games I've played where “warriors from different eras duke it out”.
And that's not just because I huff glue…

  • The_Hyphenator

Wow, what a piece of shit. I actually like the whole “warriors from different time periods” concept, though it has been done to death (I think my favorite is probably World Heroes, where America was represented by Not-Hulk Hogan), but this just looks half-assed and lame.

Insta-kills are very rarely a good idea in a fighting game. Some games, like Guilty Gear, pull them off well, but that's because they're balanced; in GG, the moves are either blockable or have pitiful range, and if you fail to execute the move successfully, you lose your super bar for the rest of the round, so there's risk involved, and it has to be a calculated move. It's not just shift weapons, spear through the head!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

I hate to say this, but this review was horrible. And I mean HORRIBLE.

    1) It's INSANELY obvious that you're already heavily biased against this game because you hate the show. Hating the show doesn't mean that you have to hate the game.
    2) No, that's not the game. You failed to mention that you can DODGE, thus making people who watch the video think that there is no way to avoid spears or gunshots. And don't say that it doesn't help, because it does. Even if it didn't help much, it sure beats the hell out of RUNNING STRAIGHT AT A SPARTAN WITH A JAVELIN.
    3) The big reason that you can die in a single hit is because the game is made for a “realistic” type of fighting (realisitic being in quotes because it doesn't entirely succeed on that front due to some stupid hit box detection at times). The game is made so that it's very possible to die very quickly, a-la Bushido Blade. Compared to everything else, in the game, it's not that bad. Hell, it doesn't even happen that often. You, on the other hand, make it sound like OHK's are the only way to win.
    4) Y = high attack; X button = medium attack; A button = low attack That's kinda knowing where your hits will land, no?
    5) This game DOES have about as much skill as Bushido Blade. Both are about knowing when to go in for an attack, when to counter, and finding an opportunity to strike. The only real difference between the two is that the ONLY way to make a kill with Bushido Blade is with a kill shot, whereas with this game, it's possible to kill someone by slashing an arm repeatedly or something to that extent. That, and you can actually kill people with your projectile in DW.
    6) Y'know how many characters the original Street Fighter 2 had? 8. Then there's Blazblue, which had 12, and I'm fairly sure that it was sold for more than 10 bucks when it first came out (not sure about now).
    7) Other complaints, such as not being able to face your opponent automatically and the lack of a story mode, are much more trivial than you make them out to be. Turning, for example, isn't nearly as big an issue as you claim. You just turn yourself around, and that's it. You make it sound like you can't do squat without automatically facing your opponent. Also, since when was Story Mode an important part of a fighting game? Street Fighter IV didn't have one. Yes, there were opening and closing movies for each character, but that barely even qualifies.

That isn't to say that the game isn't without flaws. Yes, the online is flawed. No penalties for ragequitting, which is rampart at the moment and you return to the main menu after every fight. Yes, there are a number of glitches, both gameplay-wise and visually. Sometimes, the animation gets a bit weird and stuff. Yes, the hit detection can suck on occasion. Seriously, I saw a Pirate headshot a Viking when the gun was PAST HIS SHOULDER. Those are being ironed out by SpikeGames in a future update. So less graphical glitches, less gameplay glitches, penalties for ragequitting, and you'll actually return to the online lobby instead of the main menu after a fight.

All in all, I expected a terrible review from the start, and that's exactly what I saw.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/7UN6FDZUJROKU2JTYZE43WBTUU Leonard

sometimes I think the shit they say on the show is so fucking ludicrous but I do enjoy the show however THIS GAME IS SUCH A WANNABE MORTAL KOMBAT. and where are the modern warriors like the Navy Seals or the Spetsnaz or the Mafia.

If you want to spend 1200 Microsoft points then either by Marvel vs Capcom 2 (if you don't have it) or get Hydro Thunder Hurricane

  • http://celluloidandsilicon.blogspot.com/ Avenging_Mike

You said at the start: 1) It's INSANELY obvious that you're already heavily biased against this game because you hate the show. Hating the show doesn't mean that you have to hate the game.

You said at the end: I expected a terrible review from the start, and that's exactly what I saw.

Yes, going in expecting a terrible review makes you biased. That's exactly what bias is. Expecting something is biased. Bias isn't always a bad thing. In THIS case it is, but there we have it. You were biased, he was biased. You're a hypocrite for making it your opening point.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HWVZ2X64YEBIFSB5PR4AX3TCXE M D

I watched one episode of this piece of shit show and that was Spartan vs Ninja. Interesting that you should compare a battlefield hardened warrior to someone who effectively is a farmer. The spartan was declared as the better, of course they would be on a battlefield, but as pointed out by the guy at the conclusion of the show, “A ninja would simply wait for a spartan to fall asleep, then sneak up and cut his throat.”

If you are going to compare ancient warriors then go for sensible comparision. A samurai vs a spartan is much more sensible as both are warriors of the battlefield.

And furthemore the most controversial matchup they could have would be Pirate vs Ninja, but lord knows that they are trying to stretch this horse shit out to it's limit before they throw that in. The execs who thought up this crap are probably sitting on the board thinking,
“Let's wait until people lose interest and then we can instantly rekindle the series with one of the most disputed geek topics ever.”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OXSEGIIFZI35H7TARAI7RCNJPQ Lee Graham

They did a season one back for blood episode where they pitted the samurai vs. the spartan. BTW spartan won. it was stupid and made me curse at the screen. Spoony is 100% right when he (and others) said there is no real science to this show. Its a meat head, a computer nerd and a guy who’s job it is to state the freaking obvious.

The problem with that is that expecting something will turn out a certain way doesn't necessarily mean that you're more inclined to agree with that expectation. Otherwise, I would have probably hated the game, as I thought it was going to suck badly on the grounds that games based on television shows have a tendency to suck AND the fact that the developer's other games aren't exactly the best (well, this isn't either, but you get my point). He, however, is basing his thoughts on the game on his thoughts on the television show, which is made extremely obvious by his second sentence.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

    800, not 1200.

  • specterm91

I haven't played the game yet, but he got a nice new skull piercing the exact moment the match started. You'd need the reflexes of a jaguar on speed to dodge that at the right moment. Unless its dodge is instantaneous and gets you out of the way in a split second, it wouldn't have helped much in that situation.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HWVZ2X64YEBIFSB5PR4AX3TCXE M D

But if you review the results of that match they are much closer to what you would expect of 2 field warriors. Looking at the results of Viking vs Samurai on wikipedia, you can see a very close matchup there as well. I imagine putting up a Knight against a Spartan, Viking or Samurai (another hotly debated matchup) would probably yield similar results.

I mean FFS at least 2 of the 'ninja weapons' were a black egg, which as a weapon you might as well throw sand at someone, and a blow gun which is an assassins weapon not a battlefield weapon.

  • specterm91

Dude are you a developer? Because you seem to have a hard on for defending the game. It probably isn't as bad as Spoony says, he makes a living out of exaggerating issues in games and movies, but lighten up, man.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

Yes, that is true. But it's not like you can't pair two warriors that you think would be pretty even, only to find our in the end that one guy gets completely slaughtered (William Wallace vs. Shaka Zulu comes to mind). Granted, this is not the case with Spartan vs. Knight, but to be fair, that was the first episode they did.

No, when the match started, he moved forward. If he had hit up or down on the right stick, he would have probably avoided the spear. The ONLY weapon that people are complaining about in terms of headshotting too often is the Viking's double spear. And the developers are fixing that when the game's first (and I'm assuming not only) patch comes out.

  • specterm91

Regardless, the spear still travels at light speed. Unless you know it's coming, it'd be hard to dodge it. If you like the game, awesome, but don't act like it's flawless.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dannydekooter Danny De Kooter

You can easily see the spartan grabbing his javelin before throwing, you have a whole second to react. What do you want? You want the spartan to shout: IM GOING TO THROW A SPEAR, YOU CAN DODGE IT!!!!! I play this game with my friends for hours on end, and we barely get one-shotted. You either block with a shield, or simply dodge.

It sounds like it would have been better as a cheap/freeware game.

Also, wasn't there an episode of said show, where they had a “fight” between a shark and (maybe) a t-rex?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

Trust me, I think the game is far from flawless. I often find myself comparing it to Scribblenauts. A good game, but the lack of polish prevents it from being truly something awesome (If you asked me for a rating, I'd say about 7-7.5/10). I just think that most of these comments are unjustified. But meh, that's just me. Feel free to completely disagree.

And to respond to your spear thing, it's not ridiculously hard to dodge. Granted, there is a certain element of prediction to it, but it is very possible to avoid it. Even if you do get hit, though, it won't kill you very often (unless you're low on health, obviously).

    2) Erm……what?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

Spears to the head don't actually occur too frequently (with the exception of the double spear, but that's getting nerfed).

  • specterm91

Please, don't get this anywhere near my Scribblenauts. Just sayin'.

I'm going to have to go with Spoony on this one. It may not happen often, but unless you can prove that yourself the only evidence I see stems from this review. The review with someone getting one shotted by a spear twice and a small combo once. If you like the game, that's great, if Spoony is exaggerating, that's the point of his reviews, but the fact that you can one shot anyone anywhere near that fast with any attack makes the game broken. I don't even have to play it to see that.

  • http://twitter.com/Lord_Tirion Luis Eduardo Parada

About the Street Fighter comparison, Street Fighter II was released in 1991, and really had 12 characters (only 8 characters were playable, it was interesting then since Street Fighter had only 2 playable characters), what's the point on comparing this game with a game that is almost twenty years old?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Adam-Doran/100000584164074 Adam Doran

DAMN IT, WHY DO I KEEP HITTING LIKE

Anyways, seeing as how it's still a highly revered game that is still able to stand up to the test of time AND re-released countless times (most recently Super Street Fighter II HD Remix), I think it's fair game.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

I'm getting it near MY Scribblenauts.

And no offense, but it's not like he's shown much evidence himself. I saw a single headshot (he showed it 3 times), and 3 instances of instant combo death (all 3 were with on the Ninja, who has low health; one was due to decapitation) I'm merely basing this on my experiences the first time I played (which was with a friend for an hour straight). No, it doesn't make the game broken. And you may not have to play it, but you DO have to see more than one or two instances to validly think so.

has it ever come to cross your minds that spoony was looking forward to this game back at E3?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

I haven't really focused on Spoony during E3. All I remember was him at E3 saying “You're not missing out on much” and “The trailer is more interesting than both the show and the game.”

Also, need I bring up his second sentence again? It wouldn't have been a problem if he had ended his sentence at “stupid game.”

  • http://twitter.com/Lord_Tirion Luis Eduardo Parada

    well, two things:
    1) most people are aware that is an old game, it's a really good game, but an old one, most of the people understand that you can't complain about an old game for not having relatively recent elements. Or having flaws that were solved in the sequels. Furthermore for some of us those flaws are part of the nostalgic feeling of playing an old game :D. Deadliest Warrior doesn't have that benefit because is a recent game.

    2) only the first few versions of the game have those 8 playable characters (Ryu, Ken, Blanka, E. Honda, Guile, Chun-Li, Zangief and Dhalsim) , after that it had the 12 characters (add Balrog, Vega, Sagat and Bison) and latter had 16 and 17 (Cammy, T. Hawk… the most native american MEXICAN I have ever seen, Fei-Long, Dee Jay and Akuma)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

    1) I wasn't trying to bring 8 characters across as a bad thing; just something worthing comparing.
    2) Likewise, this game will have DLC which will add more characters. It might not come out to 16 and 17, but it'll at least make the roster bigger.

  • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael "Skitch" Schiciano

Honestly, I thought about comparing this game to Bushido Blade, but really, the only thing they have in relation to each other is the one hit kill possibility. There are numerous other nuances that make it hard to compare this game seriously to Bushido Blade.

Not knowing where hits will land seemed to be a comment against thrown weapons. As for other attacks, I tried combos, and simply picked one and spammed it to win, as the game never really makes it clear that it's worth your time to really learn the combos for your characters in a variety to win consistently.

Dodging doesn't help as much as you make it out to be, sorry. This is made further true by how generally laggy the controls feel, and how at times, it feels like the game simply doesn't respond to what you are doing due to actions being attempted in mid animation (which is sometimes hard to gauge).

Not auto turning to face the enemy is frustrating from the standpoint that you can sometimes easily be accidentally facing away from an opponent, and due to the issue above, can't rotate around easily/reliably to counter/block/dodge before your opponent gets something in edgewise. This can be referred to as a strategy point, but this game ultimately does one thing over and over again to me:

It tries to be both 'deep' and 'stupid' at the same time: Deep in terms of how it tries to reward strategy…and stupid in terms of the way it tires to be like Mortal Kombat for cheap thrills to the player.

  • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael "Skitch" Schiciano

And you're saying that people should review games not based on how they are, but on how they might be?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM Anonymous

You do have a point there. I personally haven’t seen the lag, though. Maybe it’s there and I’m just getting lucky, idk.

  • http://twitter.com/Lord_Tirion Luis Eduardo Parada

And I'm not saying that a small roster is a bad thing either (neither I'm saying that DW is a bad game, I can't say that because I can't play it because I don't have a 360) , what I'm saying is that arguing that something considered a flaw in a new game is acceptable because an successful 20 year old game have the same situation is not valid. What was acceptable then is not necessarily acceptable now. Besides SFII FOR ITS TIME didn't have a small roster.

      Fine. Blazblue: Clamity Trigger. Better?

      • Anonymous

BlazBlue has more characters and all of them are radically different in playstyle. Plus, BlazBlue is so in depth that it’s entirely possible to have two people play the same character in very different ways and still have both players be using valid tactics. Deadliest Warrior has little differentiation between characters beyond how armored they are and is as deep as a rain puddle.

This game is REALLY bad. Spoony hits it right on the nose. I REALLY wish I would have watched this review before I downloaded the game. First off, you're underestimating Spoony's fan base. Second off, I could have programmed a better game with 1/2 the money and 1/2 thhe time it cost you guys.

I'd like a refund on the time WASTED on this game that I'll never get back.

  • Lyrander

A low roster count is forgivable if they're done BlazBlue style and made to be very, very different instead of Street Fight style and made to be sprite swaps of each other with MAYBE a few tweaks, but instakills like in this game are unforgivable. Guilty Gear was the only game I know of to even come close to getting instakills right and even with the huge level of difficulty and risk involved, the instakills can still be cheap at times (this being the main reason BlazBlue didn't carry over the instakills). This game? Instakills are relatively easy, carry little to no risk, and aren't even fun to see. Throw in a complete lack of character balance and little differentiation in play styles between the 8 characters and you end up with a broken mess of a game that cannot be accurately described without the word “cluster”.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dannydekooter Danny De Kooter

I never heard of this Spoony guy before I started visiting the deadliest warrior gamefaqs page. And to be honest, I find Spoony is a very boring guy to listen to. Its funny how all the crap he talks about the DW show, happens in his own little videos. He just keeps stomping you with the same biased opinion, wich isnt backed up by solid facts, the whole fucking video. His 'review' of the DW game is even worse, it clearly shows he hasn't played the game enough to get a decent opinion. It's super easy to dodge ranged attacks, so his complaining about the one hit spearthrow-kill is just whining.
There aren't alot of fighters that have the same them as this game: historical accurate fighters from different time periods. Actually there is none I can think of. His whining about the repetitive finish moves is just whining too, did he whine this much when mortal kombat had it? They add more depth into the game since they are unblockable attacks(you can dodge them), but I guess he didn't play the game more than once. I guess spoony does'nt like change, or new things and just wants another street fighter or tekken. How can you take a guy nicknamed spoony serious anyway? You watched 'the tick' too much? Talking about bad taste……
Sure enough the DW-game isnt a masterpiece, there are plenty of points that can be improved upon. But it does offer a unique gameplay experience that a lot of people like. Im not a fanboy screaming the game deserves a 9 or 10 out of 10, but you need to back up your opinion with more than half-truths and whining.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dannydekooter Danny De Kooter

Try a demo next time you crazy money spender!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dannydekooter Danny De Kooter

zzzzzz even more boring than spoony himself……
-In bushido blade you could win with bashing 1 good combo
-In dw the game you can injure limbs like in bushido blade
-pressing block faces you towards you enemy

Why keep lying/talking crap without info to back it up?

  • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael "Skitch" Schiciano

    1. There are other nuances that exist outside of the core combat mechanics that make this game hard to compare to Bushido Blade. Your statement about it misses the point.

    2. You can injure limbs, sure, but it's unreliable as to how you injure them (striking an enemy with a blow coming from the right somehow injured their left arm), among other things…and even if you want to argue about that sort of mechanics, Bushido Blade is still a 13 year old game built on more or less proprietary software when it was made, as opposed to this game, made with middle ware to help with the production process.

    3. Sure, except for when you are in the middle of an animation or something that prevents/delays a response from the block button.

None of your points here are valid, and your conduct is worse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MichaelMacabre Michael Clayton

i really doubt you're quite a skilled gamer as you claim to be. you CAN plan out where your attacks land if you are smart enough to press the right button depending on how your opponent is moving. you really expect to be able to control where every attack lands? what fucking fairy tale fighting game world do you live in? (oh and you can aim ranged attacks, they just don't explain how to do it.)
i'm definitely not a fanboy. i actually did not learn about the show until i got the game.(i haven't checked it out yet but it looks pretty bad)
it's biased ass game reviewers like you who make me take every review with a grain of salt.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dannydekooter Danny De Kooter

Just saying so doesnt make it so…..
    1. I was countering your whine-comment about being able to win in DW with a single combo, you can do also do that in BB
    2. Ok so maybey its not excactly the same, but you can definetly see the similarity. You pointed out the games are nothing alike, I'm saying they look quite alike.
    3. Sure you cant ALWAYS block, that would be a bit too easy now wouldnt it? You cant block WHILE your attacking, and you cant block if you stamina is spent. Or when your dodging. Thats kinda normal.

So ALL my points are valid, and who cares about my conduct. English isnt even my motherlanguage, so cry me a river.

  • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael "Skitch" Schiciano

“oh and you can aim ranged attacks, they just don't explain how to do it.”

Sounds like a fault of the game developer and the game itself. Not telling you how to control/effect a tactically significant part of the game? How can you defend that?

  • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael "Skitch" Schiciano

    1. That's not the point I was making ultimately, but nice try.
    2. The point was that they are different enough that making direct comparisons isn't valid.
    3. The point was that there could be valid frustration derived from when you can't block, especially when that's factored into you facing the wrong direction (for one of many reasons).

Your conduct is important on any venue, dude, especially when you use your personal name and Facebook account. You points still aren't valid in countering the underlying message I was conveying in the first place.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dannydekooter Danny De Kooter

I agree to disagree with you then, about the game and about life probably. I have no regrets about my behaviour or conduct.

No, I’m not trying to keep this game sacred. I specifically stated more than once that the game does have it’s flaws. What I’m TRYING to prove is that this game isn’t nearly as bad as he makes it out to be. The problem is, many people see the review and automatically assume that it’s bad when he’s actually making most of the problems much worse than they seem.

And besides, I DO remember him saying those things. I can’t remember when and where though, but it was in a video where the game was mentioned briefly. If anything, he probably did look forward to the game, but didn’t during that video for whatever reason.

  • mobtank

You know, as someone who has been following Spoony since his site was almost new, your complaints are the ones that come of as petty.
I've seen the DW show, its utter crap exept for the fightscene at the end whish is as historically and scientifically inaccurate as you can get, and this game is no better.
Instant kill long range attack in a fighter is BS no matter how you look at it, bad coding is inexcusable, it lacks content and has clunky controls and (as far as I can tell) lacking instructions.

And if you seriously can't think of a fighting game with fighters from different cultures and backgrounds from around the world then you don't exactly give the impression of knowing much about games in general.

Besides, this is not Spoony's regular thing anyway, just a short video he made of a game because he has talked about the show earlier.
His regular material is pure comedy gold that I and a lot of other people laugh hard all day after seeing.
It does not really matter if his opinion on something differs from mine as I still enjoy just listening to him talking about it.

Actually, you really can't aim your ranged weapon. The best you could really do is judge at what distance would most likely result in a headshot.

But here's the thing: if you could, then wouldn't this lead to the massive amounts of headshots that people think exist in this game?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

    1) I'm not going to argue the opinions of the show, but I'll just say that the fights at the end are purely entertainment and aren't trying to be accurate.
    2) a) “It's not if it's done right.” Stop acting like the words “OHK”, “range”, and “fighter” = automatically broken. b) Yes, there are glitches which are a result of bad coding, but don't many games have this? c) it's worth 800 freaking points. What are you expecting? Street Fighter IV? Besides, there's going to be DLC. >_> d) The controls aren't really clunky (although that's more opinionated), and how the hell is it lacking instruction? Not only are they easy enough to figure out on your own, but there's still a controls menu.

I will agree on the “fighters from different cultures” thing, though.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

I'm looking at it right now; and the first thing I see is a thread titled “I'll just leave this here and be on my way…..(on topic)” with the review. Seems to me like someone who didn't like the game (and was probably a fan of Spoony) was trying to troll them.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

It will land hits about as well as hits in Bushido Blade. The difference between the two is that kills in Bushido Blade are only made by making “OHK's” Any other kind of hit will either make your opponent slower, limit your opponent's attacks (if you damage the arm), or force your opponent to the ground (if you hit his leg). You could do that, but it usually doesn't get you very far.

I'm sorry, but I have to completely disagree with you. Without dodging, then the game probably would be rampart with OHK's and probably would suck, and I haven't noticed any lag in the controls.

You can simply move away until you can turn around. Dodge, run, whatever. Just move back, and then turn. Not very hard.

  • http://blog.skitchstudio.com Michael "Skitch" Schiciano

I played through and beat the arcade mode with every character on the hardest mode in Deadliest Warrior, and have the achievement and avatar award as proof if you really care to see it (I assume you don't).

Dodging works sometimes in some contexts if the game will allow you to dodge, but it never felt consistently reliable to me the whole time I was playing, at least not nearly at a comparable level to what the AI was able to do. In terms of lag, I'm going to trust my judgement of the control latency more than anything else, as you cannot disprove that I don't perceive latency in the controls when I play the game, and there's no point arguing that back and forth….I just know that it has been a problem for me when it came to not being able to dodge/turn around fast enough to stop getting hit, even when I was doing commands well advance of the attack.

And sure you can move away…if you aren't attacked beforehand, and are stuck in place until the opponent's combo executes out. It's harder than you make it out to be.

“But here's the thing: if you could, then wouldn't this lead to the massive amounts of headshots that people think exist in this game?” Perhaps, but that brings out a different point altogether.

For a standard competitive fighting game, having any sort of attack that has randomization involved (though it might just be perceived randomization in this case) is likely to cause problems from the gamer's standpoint, as it removes a layer of skill needed to consistently win a match.

The fact that sometimes I can shoot an arrow and get a head shot, and other times hit the torso might be realistic from the standpoint of rapidly shooting arrows without aiming in combat, but at the same time, it doesn't make that aspect of the game more enjoyable, fun, or rewarding as a fighting game.

@Yahoo dude: Seriously, man, we get it. Either you have a raging hard on for the show and game or you personally worked on it and got butthurt over Spoony's raging. Calm down, no one is going to listen to you, no matter how many times you say “OMG IT GON GET PATCHED LRN 2 DODGE!” Just stop, seriously, it's getting a little sad now.

“b) Yes, there are glitches which are a result of bad coding, but don't many games have this?”

Perhaps, but remember, just because other games have flaws or glitches doesn't make them right, nor does it excuses the existence of them in any game. All you can say is how much of an impact do these glitches have on the player's experience.

“c) it's worth 800 freaking points. What are you expecting? Street Fighter IV? Besides, there's going to be DLC. >_>”

    1. The only thing that the price of the game should reflect would be, for me, the amount of content or production in the game, and not the level of polish it may or may not have. There are games out there that were put out for the same price or lower in recent times that have more overall polish.

And in terms of DLC, whether it's being done for corrective purposes, or adding content, you can't ask someone to review a game based on what it might be down the line after DLC on a serious level…they're going to review the game that's right in front of them.

“d) The controls aren't really clunky (although that's more opinionated), and how the hell is it lacking instruction? Not only are they easy enough to figure out on your own, but there's still a controls menu.”

I'll disagree on this point, personally. The controls are kind of easy to figure out, and you do have a way to look up the moves, but what the game really lacks in terms of instructions is the overall nature of how the game works, which is where in game tutorials could've really helped, to demonstrate the controls, mechanics, basic tactics, and the such. This would've set the player up to be willing to try more of what was available in the game, and make the experience potentially deeper.

As it is, when you leave it up to the player to 'discover' what the game has to offer depth wise, the player stands a chance to not only overlook such depth, but be unaware that it even exists. One can blame the player for that, but the burden of making the game's own system clear to the gamer is the developer/producer first, and the gamer second, IMHO.

  • foodlespane

LOL. If you're going to pay Spike Games for their shitty game, you deserve it.

Bushido Blade was a Playstation One game that involved actual skill. Please stop comparing Deadliest Warrior to Bushido Blade. With today's technology, shouldn't a low budget game maker be able to pull off something far better and more interesting? Don't get me wrong, I love button mashers because I'm a troll at heart.I love seeing other people get pissed off after spending hours perfecting a new move; then I come in and mash a few buttons all the way to victory. That is beside the point. I've seen the game played and even actual game play right at my fingertips didn't entice me to play Deadliest Warrior. I don't know where you came from, yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM, but please go back there. I wouldn't be surprised if you were one of the developers. By the way, saying “you get what you paid for” is NOT a valid retort to a review. It's childish and UNPROFESSIONAL. I am very disappointed in the rebuttal from Spike Games.

Sorry, when you talked about the whole “playing as characters from different areas and points of time”, I had to play it back two more times because that finisher had me in a trance. In a simple summary, this game is the cinematic equivalent of Quest For Camelot, it took Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Bushido Blade, tore the gameplay into bits, and made something fighting game fans, like you SpoonyOne, don't wanna see. Tekken could probably handle the whole “quick kill” thing, considering that's pretty much what Tekken 2 was to me, but Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat actually utilize the health bar. Check out the new Mortal Kombat though, it's not as realistic as all of these DW fans like it, but we will see some actual body damage not done through fatalities.

  • Zack_Dolan

Oh my god, I've been skimming through these things since this whole debockle started and i have noticed something…why the hell is this yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM dude still here? why hasn't he just been hit with a fish, given a wedgie and banned? I normally don't try to be adversarial in these comments, i don't like to pick fights, but seriously, this dude needs to go away. i think he's posted like 50 or more times on this thread alone. i am almost sure he's a developer for spike, that's an awful generic name, and and awful lot of comments with an awful lot of venom and personal butthurt-itude for some casual commenter/viewer.

If you really work for spike mr. yahoo, you should be ashamed of yourself. bottom line is thus: deadliest warrior is bad, the show is bad, the game is bad, spoony's allowed to think so, I'm allowed to think so, the rest of the world is allowed to think so. and no amount of you BOLD. FACE. TYPING. WITH. UNNESSECCARY. PERIODS. BETWEEN. YOUR. WORDS. or holding up 20 plus yr old games (that were actually good and are still better than DW, even being 2/3 as old as me) as a point of comparison is going to change that. no one cares about your opinion anymore, you're not changing anyone's mind, the only reason anyone knows you're still there is cuz it's hilarious to mock you. the sooner you make peace with the that, the better off you'll be. I mean really? deadliest warrior? if you DIDN'T make this game and aren't really secretly working for spike, honestly i think that's even sadder. you declared war with a man and his entire community of fans for an shitty quick buck broken download that isn't even as good as castle crashers…and that's done in flash…please god man…just spend a few seconds thinking about what you're doing…

so in short, i urge you…do shut up :)

  • Zack_Dolan

uh…it's not an issue because bushido blade came out when clinton was still president, the first time, at that i think. so it's not an issue because we shouldn;t be holding almost 2 decade old games as the standard a game released in 2010 should be held to. games that came it in 2010 are the standard it should be held to…which it doesn't live up to. it doesn't even stand up to fighting games that came out in 2005. (in any way, graphics, engine, ingenuity, fun factor whatever you want to judge it by) and as a matter of fact, since you keep bringing it up, it's not even AS GOOD as bushido blade. it's not even as good as the thing you keep using in your argument to compare it to, a game it shouldn't be competing against anyway, a game with almost 20 years less tech and experience behind it, and a game that STILL beats it by a wide margin. if it can't beat games older than a disney pop idol, then it sure as hell ain't going head to head with games made right now, 10 dollar downlloads or otherwise – and that's what matters.

next you'll be arguing that the graphics aren't that bad and no one should complain because super mario brothers graphics were way worse than this and people liked that game.

To sum up the review, don't buy this game. In my opinion, if you want to play something for ten bucks, buy Psi Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy for the PS2 and find a second player. The two player co-op in that game is so stupid it's funny.

  • http://twitter.com/Squeejee Squeejee

I think people who are really into weapon and stuff (myself included) are less inclined to just enjoy the simple pleasure DW offers – at every “conclusion” they reach, I can't help but shout obscenities at my TV at how many problems there are with it.

And then there's a Centurion. In the woods. Firing a single scorpion at a lone target. Alone. There isn't one part of that sentence that makes ANY goddamn sense.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

Ha, no. I've stated that it's simply within my nature to fight to the bitter end, regardless of whether or not I'm winning or losing. I haven't been hit with a fish, etc. etc, because technically I've done nothing wrong, apart from maybe flooding the place with my posts. If anything, my posts were probably deleted because there were far too many of them (of which I agree with :P). The reason it's a generic name is because I made the account just for commenting here. What venom? I called this a horrible review (of which I also said that I sort of take it back in the follow up video). Other than that, all I've done is argue with people about points they've made about this game. Not once did I call Spoony a terrible person (I've even said the opposite); not once did I call his fans stupid or anything.

You act like I'm not allowed to think otherwise. I'm only bringing up games to compare them in specific points and not in general (of COURSE SF2 is better than DW, saying otherwise is arbitrary; besides I also brought up BlazBlue [which is also a superior game]). No one cared about my opinion to begin with. Yeah, yeah. Sticks and stones break my bones, but words sure do hurt a lot on teh interwebz, right? I've already made peace with that in the follow up. No, I didn't declare a war. I brought up my own points, and tried to counter the arguments that people had about this game (whether I succeeded or not is something different entirely). Yes, Deadliest Warrior. I've seen people like stuff MUCH worse. >_> No, I didn't declare war against Spoony. If I were to declare war against Spoony, I would have insulted him or something. I've thought about what I did, and I regret nothing. Unless trying to defend something- regardless of what people think- is something worth regretting.

  • Zack_Dolan

Well, at least you're being civil about it, honestly that's more than i can say about a lot of the people i've seen enter this argument since i posted this. like i said, i wasn't trying to pick a fight, I (like so many people missed with spoony) was being a jerk for comedic effect. i mean have you ever seriously heard anyone say “hit with a fish” when they were being serious? haha I'm actually not even actually back to fight, i actually only know you answered because this week i guess spoony altered his comments system because now anytime anyone responds to anything i posted it sends me an email…it's really clogging my box up now haha

though you totally went overboard on the comments man. I seriously was reading through and like every other comment was you and like every one of them was arguing with the one before you, it just seemed a little nutsoid, ya know? I was thinking “oh my GOD this guy…this guy is a loon” and i really was getting the vibe you worked for spike. i mean, ya see my point right? that's a pretty logical thing to assume with the amount of backlash. oh and also, i am fairly sure that spoony doesn't do most of the direct banning himself. as in i don't think he scrolls down the page, banhammer cocked, just waiting for someone to poop on. i think the admins just delete anything that gets flagged by other viewers. i'm sure spoony does some of it, but a lot of it i think is people getting flagged by other users

I've only commented on this to show my support for spoony and basically because it amuses me to argue with douchebags who take themselves WAY too seriously. but since you're being so respectful, you're no fun anymore haha. and like i said i saw guys who were HUGE fuckers after i posted this on the following video, so i'm sure there's no shortage of fucktards with thin skin i can torment :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KY3EKS3NYAZWIS7JSYXDWZNSEA Nick

So this is probably not the case for all of the posts, but most of yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM's posts have been removed now. Just ignore the trolling and/or flag the comments. You don't need to give trolls the attention they are seeking by replying angrily.

  • Zack_Dolan

oh yeah i saw. actually talked to the guy…er…girl? i dunno…”them” haha. and as i explained to them, i'm just amusing myself by making the angry lonely virgin in the basement crowd, those people who stay up all night hunting for someone on the internet whom they can proclaim to be WROOOOONG haha. I was really being a jerk for comedic affect, and if it had pissed them off and they got all butthurt about it, yeah i'd probably still be arguing with them, again for my own amusement, but they took the high road and it ended in peace. (at least i think so anyway)

you're absolutely right, while it is giving the trolls attention, it really gets their panties in a bunch. can't you just picture them in their raggedy office chair from the late 80's they got a yard sale, lit by one bare bulb in their mom's basement, balls retreating into their abdomen as every muscle in their body pulls taught with impotent rage, a rage they think acting like clubber lang on the keyboard will satiate (and even funnier, impress other people), only to be told “oh shut it, dork” which only enrages them further? you can't tell me that doesn't put at least the tinsiest little smile on your face?

honestly, while you're right, the best would be to ignore them and take the high road, their gonna troll whether anyone is looking or not, i mean by the time i got here there were over a 1000 comments between both videos. ignoring them, while the mature thing to do, isn't going to stop them. my way isn't going to stop them either, obviously, but i'll sure be having a good laugh. immature? yes. maybe a little counterproductive? yeah fun? oh god yes ;)

“In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.”

Uh-huh…….I didn't flame, the posts were relevant since they were all pertaining to people talking about how much the game sucked and/or Spoony's review, I was trying to defend the game, and I had no intent on trying to piss people off for my own amusement. You tell me how I was a troll.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM yahoo-3PN5YF2DUZ7RNJCO5DQ5JWCEWM

Yes, I'm perfectly aware I went overboard with the comments (I looked and saw about 50ish and went “WTF?”). Again, I just can't help myself (I think I got that from constant bickering with my mother, who makes my arguments look like ace-in-the-holes). I've done it countless times and have pissed off my friends several times doing so. Half the time I don't mean to, but once I get into the arguing phase, I often don't realize how far I push it (The only example I can think of at the moment will only start a massive war that has absolutely nothing to do with anything here). Trust me, I'm not a bad guy. Just a stupid one that can easily lose grip on self-control. :D

Anyways, it's fairly safe to say that I've calmed down from going all Noah's Ark on this place. I think I'm better off just backing away and acting like it never happened (Good thing I have no intention of using this account ever again :P).

EDIT: Also, the removal of comments doesn't really bother me. It's probably for the better anyways.

The show is pretty good as long as you're smart enough to take it for what it is: Entertainment.
The game is fun, too, if you have a friend, or find someone online who won't rage quit. It could have a bit more polish, but as far as downloadable games go, it's a great deal, since they only charge $10, as opposed to the usual $15.

How did Spoony lose? The spear didn't even touch him, it was a fair few inches away from him and even if it did go all the away it would have flew past his bloody head, look at the height of the spear in proportion to the height of Spoonys character! That's bad development!

This was possibly the worst waste of money I ever made in my life, and I bought Lord of the Rings Conquest when it was still £40. Game offers a generous returns policy so I didn’t have to live with that mistake. XBLA offers no such comfort so I have to live with this stinking pile of faeces for the rest of my 360s life. I don’t feel that Spoony’s review goes far enough; it’s worse than a bad game from a small developer, it’s an insult to the intelligence of the gaming community as a whole. It offers no challenge to our intelligence, reflexes, or even our good sense (unless you count not buying the game, yes, there should be an achievement for not buying this game.)

I would add my opinion on the gameplay but it would just be re-hashing what has been said here-save that I wish that this game had come in a box so I could go Ron Livingston its ass. But with creative use of a Printer, the XBLA cover for Deadliest Asswipe: The Game, and a spare Xbox case,it should only be 10 minutes before I’m “Back up in [it’s] face with a Resurrection!”

Any mention of this game in the same sentence as Bushido Blade is giving the game too much credit.

Granted, this game COULD have been a good one. It’s actually a nifty concept, and using a BB style engine would go nicely with it. But once again, poor quality control prevails and we’re left with a half-assed attempt that isn’t fit to carry BB’s jock strap.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, i’m sure everyone knows that the way they decide who’s the “deadliest warrior” in the TV shows is pretty much randomly choosing one, but I just watch the shows to see them use the ancient and varied weaponry.

Hey man, sas long as you don’t pretend it’s scientific in any way there’s no problem with liking the show.

  • Anonymous

Here’s the thing, though (as I understand it)- Everything you see on the show is not supposed to be scientific. It’s aired on Spike TV, for godsakes. It’s a show about a bunch of guys bashing gel torsos with antiquated weapons. However, I think that there’s some legitimately good science going on behind the scenes. They do need figures for the sim, after all. I believe that there is more testing going on behind the scenes- Multiple tests of accuracy, hitting power, penetration, effective distance, etc. You can’t tell me that getting an Edge carries any weight in the sim- there’s no checkbox to say that this gun is better than this other gun.

Or it could be that it’s mouth-breathing thick-skulled show about dudes hitting each other with sticks. Either way, I love it.

The only instance I know of a spear going through a skull, Phineas Gage got a 6kg metal pole blown straight through his head, but it was freaking blasted at him with gunpowder, not hand-thrown. This game is so cartoon, it’s sad that they try to pass it as realistic.

In fact, let’s go on a bit of a tangent. What’s the deal with people whining about the price of short DLC and downloadable games? I spend about ten bucks each time I eat at my college cafeteria… food that takes about 20 minutes to eat on average. Ten bucks for a replayable, multi-hour game? Five bucks for a one-hour diversion that includes high-level loot that lasts the remainder of the 60+ hour campaign? By cost alone, that’s pretty decent value in my books.

I’m pretty sure it’s the fact that you could spend that $10 so, *so* much better. You could buy Geometry Wars. Or Pac-Man. Or any one of dozens of games that are far superior to this POS.

You have to remember that every game is competing for your time and money. So the fact that something is cheap doesn’t mean that you can just give it a pass when there are many, *many* other better games out there.

I don’t even play xbox, but i can tell you right now, that I have never been the kind of guy to ‘train’ these games before I go and play with the big boys, so to speak, I just jump right in the middle of it, and I can tell you right now, that if I were to have played just as he did, and had the instant headshot, I would have been more than pissed off too.

All I’m saying is that, I don’t even play the game, and Spoony gives more than a convincing argument. he has been honest with all of his reviews so far, why would he suddenly become biased and angry over one specific game now?

    Oh Spike, why must you constantly rape our culture with your tentacles of stupidity, senselessness and gory blood bath-esque propaganda? If realism was your goal, you couldn’t have failed harder. And honestly, why would you make a “realistic” game? Don’t we play games to, oh I don’t know, escape reality? -_-;

(So, the comments in the other video aren’t working at the time of writing, so I’ll say this here.)
Hm… A stamina system? Lets you block and dodge… When it runs out you can’t block in dodge… You know, I think I’ve seen this in older, much better games… Like, oh, say for sake of example, fucking MONSTER HUNTER?

This same sort of stamina system also showed up in Phantasy Star Portable 2, or at least the demo I played. So, the developers apparently think that because they’re ripping off JAPANESE games instead of Western ones, they can get away with it.

    @ The Geek Lord
Yes, on Monster Hunter, I admit that there IS a Stamina System. But let’s be honest, you don’t fucking use it every swing you make, or every shot you take. I can swing the weapons in it (In a combo, mind you) with no massive reduction in a Stamina Bar.
Not to mention, you ARE comparing DW with Monster Hunter. One is based on a ‘Realistic’ fight, while the other is based off of a fantasy world. If there was Realistic measures in Monster Hunter, you would be dead as soon as you ran into your first Rathalos, or were attacked by a group of Genprey.

And on a side note, I admit that Spoony DOES have a point about the show. They ‘test’ the weapons, but they don’t test them accurately, or with the same tests. My friend and I had a discussion on the show about this. I mean, if you look at it. Think this through. If you want to test the close range weapons, give them tests that are exact copies. You cut through X Number of pigs. How much can your weapon cut through? This gun, at this range is accurate. is your gun as accurate at this range as well?

Truth be told, it baffles me that so many of you are defending this when you haven’t looked at all the fine details. And I know SOMEONE is going to go bat shit about my post, so here’s something to think about. Are you REALLY just going to sit here, and bug me about this? You’re losing a argument that many people see has a clear outcome. It’s a $10 Game, and truth be told, I can get something that is much more entertaining for $10, OR LESS for that matter. And Spike, you claim to be a SMALL company, and for us to pity you. No. Just stick to the TV shows, and leave games to the big gaming companies. they make much more entertaining games.

    @ Amanda Holloway
VERY good point, but at the same time, I can sort of disagree. We DO escape to gaming as either a way to relax, connect with friends, or to escape Reality. and everyone who plays, I am sure all of us can agree, we play a game to feel powerful, to feel great about ourselves, and to have a challenge, or to simply win. When you play a fighting game, you play to simply beat down your opponent with either your button mashing, or timed strikes. When you play a Realistic one, you play because you expect it to be Realistic, requiring skill, and technique.

Probably should be more specific. The first part of the thing ws directed at you, everything past that is kinda directed to the general audience.

I found myself complaining about the same things you mentioned in both the review and follow up. Good review Spoony.
Se, unlike Spike Games, I can spell your name correctly.

You are right about there is just about anything you can do better for $10…
You can become a Duke of Sealand for $10 for example :P

Though do agree with all the problems you mentioned about the game Spoony, I find the game hypnotically enjoyable, so much so that I found myself playing the game for 6 hours straight. I don’t know why I thought this game was so fun but all I know is that although the game is broken in every way, I find great joy in the absurdity of Pirate versus Ninja.

How dare people compare Deadliest Warrior to Bushido Blade. Deadliest Warrior involved a button mashing luck fest while Bushido Blade has the complexity to have multiple forms and styles of combat which were different for every character. It even included a honor system which determined how the single player campaign went.

I admit the limited roster held out extreme replay value, but it was frickin awesome to jump at an opponet with a katana and get a lethal blow to the head. Hell you could savage your opponents limbs and have them be useless at fighting you a not kill them. Bushido Blade kicks Deadliest Warrior’s ass in every way.

The guys on the show are scientists, and probably leave out the parts that aren’t entertaining. On the other hand, yes. Yes the game really sucks, but the show doesn’t as much. You’ve got to love an Apache arguing with a doctor that a gladiator’s helmet is heavy, while the doctor’s response is, “It broke your weapon. How can you argue this?”

I played the demo of this game and I gotta say I feel bad for anyone who actually spent money on this game. You might as well have just taken $10 out of your wallet and flushed it down the toilet because, in all honesty, the anger of losing that $10 would have subsided faster than the anger of having to play this terrible broken game. As far as spike Games comment about paying for milk and expecting honey goes, if you can’t make a game with decent controls, balanced characters, or fair game mechanics then just don’t make the game… shitheads.

Spoony, I very much agree with you on all point of this review, including the fact that this was just a cheap way to cash in on a bad product.

…And yes, I spelled spike with a lowercase “s” on purpose. Two can play at this game.

Spike has announced that their making another deadliest warrior game (called deadliest warrior legends) were it will have more warriors and a new campaign mode, and their aparently making a deadliest warrior movie (dont know how they will pull that off).

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1175657234 Donnie Reynolds

I agree on the part of the movie, I’m not afraid to admit that at times I liked the show as it did give a good background/history of the fighters and just seeing the weapons and styles in general. The about this thought is that as a movie it would be nearly impossible to pull off as its just a simulation between two warriors; THAT SHOULD NOT BE A DAMN MOVIE! The first game was a rip-off, I got it one day when I had some MS points to burn and I really regret that. No way in hell am i buying the new game, my friend did and I played it and i still found it was very unresponsive and cheap like the original, plus there’s only 9 characters, I can’t say anything about the campaign thought as I didnt do that, I’m speaking purely on just the combat. Either way This would be a great review for Spoony considering the hell some people put him through on the original.

As someone who actually played this game for hours as well, detailing it and even teaching much younger kids to play it 9-12 age. This game is broken.

The combo feature is rarely if ever used as it requires no skill to kill an opponent. I played through each storyline unlocking every weapon save for the Pirate who was so weak and broken that after round three (three fighters in) he was insta-killed every time by I think it was the Viking with his spear or whatever. The gun with the guns could not beat anyone with armor… The guy with a BOMB couldnt kill anyone and yes I tried his grenade finisher.. they dodge it.. out of the blue the AI is a dodge master

(in response to your follow-up episode since there wasn’t a comment section probably for obvious reasons!)  OOOOOhhhh Spoony hands it down.  Huzzah man.  You really are a fantastic ranter.  It was kind of a bummer to hear how unfortunate this game ended up as because I know you loathed the tv show but I got a kick out of it.  There were plenty of times when the match up was just ridiculous and the outcome just wasn’t believeable but it was still a fun to check out from a historical and cultural point of view I guess.  I liked seeing how all these old weapons were used by people who learned how to use them, the teams always poked at each other and even if they didn’t believe in the match ups, you could tell at least they were having a good time too.  Anyway, I was kinda excited to see this game when they previewed it and I think the biggest let down was hearing that it only had 8 playable characters.  I mean, I think this came out after season 1 but weren’t there more than 4 match ups?  I have a feeling I would’ve gotten caught up in the same problems you were having as far as, why do I have a short range weapon equipped when we’re really far away from each other, why can I suddenly not hit or block anything, why do I need to face you manually, etc etc.  I grew up on a decent amount of fighting games, but as a casual gamer and not terribly skilled in these things, I would probably die from my own incapability to figure these things out MORE than anything that could be broken or unfair in the game.  I hear you on everything you mentioned, although I haven’t and won’t be playing the game, all the reasoning you had behind what you said and what others tried to nail you for including Spike made complete sense to me.  I for one believe Spoony when he says something isn’t up to par!  And that’s how I’d probably sum the reviews up in a very gentle manner, this game is not up to par.  Done and done.  ^_^

  • tricksterhuaun

I’ve never played this game , and i never will, because the programmers of this game is a bunch of insecure toddlers who can’t take criticism.

  • Tai_MT

Here’s what you tell Spike Games about their price point…

“You get what you pay for!”  Um, okay.  Dwarf Fortress.  That’s how I answer you.  DWARF FORTRESS.  A game that is FREE.  Yep, it’s made by what…  two guys in their basement?

I don’t care what kind of developer you are…  Arguing “you get what you pay for” as a game developer will IMMEDIATELY get you that response frome me.  “How can a game with less developers and no budget make a better game then?”  Price point is an indefensible point on your game in this day and age.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Durand/100000584047337 Dan Durand

Exactly what I was thinking throughout the other half, go to Kongregate, everything on there is free and it’s all a lot more fun than this shitty game.

    • banedon

Actually there *is* such a thing as you get what you pay for. If I pay you pittance to do something as opposed to a much larger amount of money to do the same thing, it’s far more likely that you’ll do a better job given the greater incentive.
You come across this all the time with any range of products – including the games industry. I’m not saying that it’s a good thing for Spike Games to use that as an excuse for turning out rubbish (they should turn out a better product and charge a bit more), but I the saying itself has some truth.

As for things being turned out for free: I can do that too. However I’d soon be homeless and possibly starving to death if it was my main income :). Free things either come with an indirect price tag (advertising, non-free DLC, etc), are done as a project/hobby or as a loss-leader (encouraging you to purchase other items at the same time).
