Ultima 1: The First Age of Darkness

The Spoony One | Jul 4 2010 | more notation(s) |

How do you kill a man who wields the Gem of Immortality?

Edit: Sorry if there’s a bit of a background hiss on the audio. I’d turned the gain on my microphone down for E3 and never switched it back, so most of the audio here was pretty dim and I had to bring it up. It’ll be fixed next time.

I expected you to mention how the ret-con explained the tie fighters in Ultima one. They were Kilrathi.
Looking back, there were a hell of a lot of Kilrathi in the Ultima series.

  • MitchellBandes

Now that's more like it. Awesome review, Spoony. I especially enjoyed the return of the Gunblade.

  • MetalNick

I never played any of the Ultima games, but damn I wish I would have now. The game is so bizarre it appears as though Lord British just said “fuck it” and had a great time making it.

  • http://www.foxhack.net/ Foxhack

Man, why'd you have to kill Kain from Command & Conquer? You dick!

  • http://twitter.com/Automan2k Stephen AustinA

Wow.. Ultima brings back memories on those early days of PC gaming. It was actually kind of weird to see you reviewing this because I was recently going through some old stuff and found the map that came with Ultima 4.

I've also been playing Martian Dreams on DOSBox.

  • Doctor Who

Sweet. Love the Spaceballs reference. I'm probably the only dork in the world who actually has that song on his mp3 player.

  • shardok

Bout fricken time! :D Moar Ultima games.

Stones is one of the most epic songs ever, ty for playing it ^^

  • http://www.facebook.com/okram2k Marko Fithian

    Holy crap that was awesome!

  • http://twitter.com/Kimarous P.S. Gillespie

    That… was… GLORIOUS!

  • saint23thomas

That's what was great about Blood Omen. You didn't have to be heroic. You could smite the evil force, and bring peace to the land, or you could choose to take it's place, and rule your new empire with an iron fist.

  • madlord

Wow, I think Lord British needs way more medication.

DM: “In order to defeat the wizard thou must go back in time, in order to do so ye must purchase a space shuttle and become a Space Ace to gain the respect of thine princess.”

Player: “Okay then, I suppose I'll… wait… what?!?”

DM: “Have thou find thine blaster rifle yet?”

  • http://twitter.com/Brossolini Jason_Meza

Awesome, can't wait for the rest of the vids. :D

  • http://twitter.com/YE015 Kevin Miyata

    Nice airsoft rifles.

  • wdunn

The T2 rip off was awesome.

  • annonith

Kinda reminds me of M&M 6 and 7 where near the end of the game you can use LAZOR MACHINE GUNS LOLOLOLOL!!!!1

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Evey-Jr/100000772710027 Richard Evey Jr.

OK, how do I get a copy? I totally missed this when it came out. It's at least four levels of awesome!

  • KK_Libra

Wow, this makes me sad I never played these games. That is the most awesome game ever! This is exactly what D&D is missing: blaster rifles and TIE fighters.

  • http://www.facebook.com/david.dulude David Dulude

    again… greatest thing EVAR!!!

  • http://twitter.com/K_ToF Christophe Ferreira

Finally someone brave enough to tackle the Ultima series!

My personal experience with this series was UltimaIV. it was a huge part of my childhood which baffled me and i was never really able to beat. got as far as the Abyss but never completed it. The food in these games always seems a weird weird factor. Also i think that in 4, a party of 8 people eat as much as a single person, but i could b wrong.

UltimaIV was more reasonable logic wise, but I'm really looking forward to it. keep up the good job.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ichigodarken Stephen Andrew McCarley

It was funny at SGC and it is still funny now Spoony, Gald you could come hang out with us all in Texas Spoony hope to you next time you are in Texas

  • http://twitter.com/Kurimus Jon Wind

Your best greenscreen work to date, very nice spoony!

  • Logion

wow! Your new special effects rocks! I loved the Gandalf part. The new lighting effects you have on yourself looks really good.

  • JJFryer

You play Gandalf really well. LOTR would be better with space guns and shuttles. The increase in cut aways i think made this one of your funnier ones

  • sephex

Part 1 already? Not a problem, but now it looks like I jumped the gun with my other comment! Ah, well…

Anyway, NOW I wish that I paid more attention to this series back in the day. As odd as the sci-fi elements are, I would have loved them as a kid.

Also, that Lord of the Rings parody slayed me, Spoony! And holy hell you got mad green screen skillz out of nowhere! Well done!

P.S. Austrian Death Machine fuck yeah!

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/114319313498601954245 Kaltzor

The Ultima game i've ever played is Ultima Online… This one just less sense than every fucking RPG ever together.

  • messengus

Holy crap, Spoony. The green-screen effects have gotten so much better. It really looks professional now and the contrast between your body's lines and the background has been diminished greatly, I can no longer distinguish the two. Looks fantastic!

  • skavenhorde

Tie fighters? Holy crap, I should have played this game.

Btw, great idea putting the Spaceballs music during the tie fighter scene. Funny as hell.

  • valereth

I have played some of the Ultima games, but never this one. Looks like the nerdiest game ever. Awesome.

  • http://www.youtube.com/egxtra John K. Spencer

Man…now I feel bad that I wasted my time with Root Beer Tapper and Donkey Kong on those Apple computer relics when I could've played this epic classic!

  • Strelnikov

Lord British's excuse for the Tie fighters:

    “Jolt Cola's a hell of a drug.”

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/IWYTFUHE6VEOLWH7EZLCAVQHWA Coltrane

this is one of my favorite reviews! Hilarious!

  • http://twitter.com/xbeastcake Chris Gutierrez

Spoony your skills at using green screen are getting much much better, hope to see more in the future :)

  • undeadaRTie

I was completely awestomped at the Moria bit…
This one turned out just… epically.

  • Darkweaver

7:22 is now my new wallpaper!

  • punchline36

    MOST. AWESOME. FICTIONAL. UNIVERSE. EVER.

  • Madpotator

This was an extremely funny retrospective episode. Bravo!

  • BlazingOwnager

Please for the sake of all those who don't know about Richard Garriot's general exploits, please just do a recap. This is the man who decided to host a Titanic party for his guests, then /crashed the ship and dumped everyone overboard without warning/. This is the man who owns a castle for a house, with secret passages. This is the man who blasted his DNA, and himself, into space.

He is truly the most amusing old-school style celebrity of the industry, back when they used to have real personalities and not just be corporate drones (barring a couple of exceptions). In a way he's the last of the “Rock stars” of gaming. Yeah, his last efforts collapsed, but in no way does that make him less awesome. Because he is.

Honestly, Chris Roberts a lot felt was his counterpart – but I'm going to go ahead and say he's kind of a jackass. The best Wing Commanders had almost nothing to do with him (The expansions, II, Privateer, and 4). Anyway, “Lord British” is truly amusing enough in and of himself to warrant a shout out!

  • Makrontt

    This review was just awesome.

I never played any ultima older than ultima IV, where the whole story was more consistent, but i remember reading stuff about how in ultima 1 you could travel across the entire solar system, not just one world. Back then i wondered “How they did that while making sense?” Apparently they didn't.

But who cares? fighting a balrog with a phaser then jump into a space shuttle to fight TIE fighters is epic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joel-Martinsson/100001017868380 Joel Martinsson

Actually I think Blaster is also a star wars reference since the guns there are generally called blasters.

  • batlashes

This is the type of Spoony review I love <3 Absolutely excellent!

  • Homncruse

Awesome costumes Spoony. These reviews are going to be amazing.
I don't know how you do it, but your videos just keep getting better and better. Dammit, where's my 24-hour Spoony TV Network!!

  • http://twitter.com/KatKaleen KatKaleen

“How do you kill a man who wields the Gem of Immortality?”
    With SCIENCE!
Time machines are science, right? Fictional science, but still.

  • dawgstar

My favorite bit? The Space Quest screenshots. Spoony grew up on the adventure game streets!

  • http://twitter.com/rsraven90 RSRaven90

I never played the game since I not only don't have an original copy of it (which I had, but lost it), but I don't have the PC for it, mine's too advanced, but perhaps with DOSBox? Anyway, I REALLY wasn't expecting space shuttles, “phazors”, blasters, and space travelling. I guess Richard Garriott just loved Wing Commander so much he had to put it there as well.

Also, Spoony, you didn't spell correctly a name in the credits there, it's actually “Bloodpigggy”.

  • adamfox

Amazing review, top form old boy!

  • jewbagel

Jesus, it took me 5 minutes to recover from Spoony the Grey. God damn was that funny.

  • peteman

The eagle thing wasn't really a plot hole. Big flying eagles are big flying targets, and would you want to fly in volcano choked sky? You could probably have them drop them off closer, faster than on foot, though.

  • http://twitter.com/CedarMusketeer Bryan Gardner

Maybe you should add Air Cars and Space Shuttles into your D&D game too. I'm sure Joe would appricate it.

  • spoonybardol

I never was much of a PC Gamer in my youth so most of the Ultima games passed me by, but I remember playing the hell out of Ultima VII (both parts) and loving them. I haven't revisited them in years, so I'm looking forward to you getting to them and I can see if they really were awesome or if I'm just remembering them through rose-tinted lenses.

Fuck Ultima VIII though. I managed to finish it, and it had a few interesting ideas and a good graphical style, but it was so clunky and everything was implemented terribly.

  • http://twitter.com/Nukleon Adam FD

Eh, you could've covered up the holes for the BBs in that grenade :P Otherwise kudos, excellent stuff, if ripping off other people's letsplays (with permission) is what you have to do to give us more goodies, then go ahead! :D

  • Son_Of_Jack_Deth

Oh man, that was an awesome review Spoony! I loved the use of the Spaceballs song. And Gandalf with a rocket launcher, pure comedy gold.

This video really took me back. Back in the 80's I used to write games like the first Ultima (mine were always science fiction though) as it wasn't all that hard. It just took forever to enter in all the code, especially for the answers or solutions to questions and problems.

    Great job Spoon.

  • http://www.gamespot.com/users/cornbredx CornBRED-X

Spoony, I think think this may your opus! That was great!

Cant wait for the next episode.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Bartlett/1424815227 Chris Bartlett

outstanding. Great job, that kept me entertained though my fruit loops

  • Il Principe

WOW! Love that LOTR stick you did.

  • http://bluehighwind.blogspot.com/ BlueHighwind

What is that rockin' tune at the end of this review? I must HAVE IT!!

Also Spoony has become a master of green screen.

  • Logion

The tune was “Terminator 2 Theme” from the album Double Brutal by Austrian Death Machine.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jaebird88 Jared Delahoussaye

I grant you with +10 Balls of Awesome for ending the video with Austrian Death Machine!

  • Acall

My god, Spoony. The background noise in the audio is unbearable. What mic are you using?

  • thedeviot

Loved the sketches in this one. The Triforce bit, and LOTR parody were classic.

  • Lowcifur

This sorta begs the question…what can change the nature of a man?

  • goodguya

Great take on a retrospective Spoony. They're pretty much reviews, though, so maybe if you could talk a bit more about the history of the production? Either way your special effects are KICK ASS. How many props do you have man???

  • Salenstormwing

So all you have to do to beat the game is get the time machine that's parked out back behind the castle and beat up some guy in the past, and the only way to do that is to go through all that stuff in the middle just so you can go use your phaser on some poor schmuck in the past who has the ability to turn into a bat.

I'm trying to imagine this as a plot to a Conan the Barbarian movie, just so you can beat up James Earl Jones and halfway through the movie Conan ends up flying around in space dogfighting the Empire.

It's official, Richard Garriott (I refuse to call him Lord British) must have been the most awesome DM ever, or smoked WAY too much of the good stuff. One of the two.

  • nick3889

DAMN spoony i never realized u had so many awesome props and costumes Very nice, and i gotta say the technology imbalance in the game made this review a lot more entertaining

  • JALAPENOWAYNE

OMG!!! I need to get this game. Seriously, you make this game look so awesome. It's like kids playing in the backyard and mixing their Star Wars, GI Joe and Batman action figures together and some how the storm trooper gets an AK-47 or Destro gets into the batmobile.

  • Dopatoka

Do not forg… I mean lose how to play the game. aka fuck chuckles.
spoony i was looking over some of my Ultima game books and think it is a flying carpet and know it said flying car but they did that to save space not that it really matter the game is insanely fun anyhow. if you want to be really hardcore check out the Ultima on the nes and the snes.

  • JALAPENOWAYNE

Lord British laughs at your four winds.

  • Sibsen

    Wow!
    Can't wait till Ultima IV!

  • http://www.facebook.com/AtlasRedux Johnny Lunder

    1. Old classic games.
    2. Nice reviews.
    3. HILARIOUS SPOONY EDITING AND PROPS!

    1 +2 +3 = awesomeness.

  • EatTheHumans

So THATS why most new games fall a bit short. Because they're all just playing catch up with this!

Although personally If I was yon Evil Wizard chap I wouldn't mess about with the Gems of Immortality first. I would build me a Death Star and fill it with Balrogs, Chaos Space Marines and Sith. THEN get the Gems of Immortality.

  • TheFeydakin

    NO! 1+2+3 = 6 moron…

  • Iaro

Awesome review, Spoony! I've been wondering who this Lord British chap was for a while…
Also, I loved the Gandalf bit and The Space Shuttle-making Blacksmith. Nice cockney accent you got there! XD

  • paradeus

Spoony dressed as Gandalf shooting a blaster… now I've seen everything!

But seriously this was a great review and the “costume bits” were used very effectively! Looking forward to Ultima II!

Well….that is silly. lol XD Sky car, shuttle, TRiforce…nahh…*throw away*…looking ggo so far. XD

Although, the Ultima 0 did had that feel of Knightmare…the one witht he calling out directions…grabbing food or you die…becoming a knight (or was that a squire).

That was…stupidly, awesomely epic by all accounts. The 80s were really something.

  • zolt

Really good special effects Spoony! Loved the Gandalf scene and Triangle bit. Guess learning Adobe soft pays off. Nicely done, sir!

  • Marvose

The skits are gratuitous and detrimental. You're so much funnier when it's just you and the camera.

Partial agree. I don’t have any inherent problem with the skits, though they seem to be lacking some comedic punch.

I thought no video series you could produce would top spooning with spoony. Though then comes this fucking awesome Ultima series. Seriously great videos, I loved the Gandalf scene, laughed for ages :)

  • Mechaflash45

Lord British is a genius. We all know that Lord of the Rings would've been 1000x as epic if the Riders of Rohan charged at the hordes of evil mounted on speeder bikes shooting blasters

PS: I dare you to find a story in a game that's more awesome than U1. (Other ultimas don't count, though.)

  • http://twitter.com/Alexis_Royce Alexis Royce

Those green screen scenes were fantastic. I'd really been enjoying the first couple, but you outdid yourself with the Gandalf bit. The lighting was wonderful, and you integrated the clips really well. These kinds of bits make it hard for me to believe that anyone wouldn't like your skits. You do them so freaking well. It's easy to see when somebody does something wrong, but here you made it obvious all the things you were doing right.

Totally kick-ass awesome work Spoony. I laughed my ass off when Spoony the Grey brought out the Flame of Arnor and showed the Balrog how things were done downtown.

  • Leto_Atreides

Great video. That should make me forget about the Nostalgia Chick trashing Dune.

  • UC Grab

didn't he build the castle from ultima later on with the money he had made with the game profits?

  • UC Grab

great review Spoony, it brings a lot of memories too. An ex of mine loved the ultima series, hell, at one point i played some ultima online with her, tho the only things i can remember were that it had some of the nicest playes in an mmo i have ever seen and that everyone was freaked out becose i killed a dog in a town.

  • RPGaholic

Actually, the castle from Ultima was based on his house, which he would run D&D LARPs around halloween. He had interior decorators working for months while he lived elsewhere.

  • http://countersweet.myopenid.com/ someone

lol, that bat fight at the end. i believe you can go to 8 directions with numpad. like numeric 1 goes to south west

  • RPGaholic

I personally cannot wait for the review of Ultima II. Richard Garriot & crew were working on it when Time Bandits came out, and spent countless hours in theaters copying the map from that movie to use for their time travel points, and even included it in the packaging. I never did really play much of 3, did a little on the NES, but didn't really like it, less than an hour overall, might try it again. 4, that was my main intro to Ultima, and had an item that could kill anything (even Lord British who was legendarily unkillable in 1-3 in his own castle) at the cost of your reputation. Spend your whole game being a paragon of virtue, use that item (even in the deepest, darkest, dungeon on the foulest, most obscene evil) and even the sheepf#$&er in the stockades is looking down his nose at you. The SNES entries were decent, but I didn't put effort in to beating them, and when Ultima went online, I didn't have internet access, so I was s#^t out of luck there.

  • KevinSutton

The video bits went above and beyond this time. Especially the triforce. But the real star remained the game. It just went from nutty to WTF. It's sort of like Eragon mixing Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, but with balls and no desire to pretend to make sense.

  • http://twitter.com/DJZineDal Robbie Scott

Spoony that was awesome, one of the best reviews I have seen from you yet. The Ultima series was one of my favorite things when I was growing up and was my first real experience with Role Playing and D&D in general. I am extremely happy that you are doing an entire retrospective of the series. Thank you!

  • http://www.facebook.com/hbentonjr Henry Benton Jr

    Great video!
Though if anyone ever told me, without video evidence, was that's what happened in Ultimate 1 I would have told them to lay off the drugs.

  • foodlespane

LOL, I was just to mention the audio, Spoony. Awesome video as usual. Out of topic, though, I just came from the TGWTG site and I'm a bit off-put with what the Nostalgia Chick did with her unfunny, facepalm-inducing Dune review. I mean, I'm sure she meant well, but… let's just say that she wasn't the right reviewer for the job. Here's hoping that you'll someday tackle Dune the movie on one of your videos and give it proper justice. I mean, man… the way Ms. Ellis was so clueless throughout her entire review almost made me fanboy rage on her. -_- LMAO. Sorry, just had to vent. Again, great video on the ever-nostalgic Ultima series.

Laughed so hard at the Balrog part that I almost caughed blood. shared that scene with everyone who might have once heard something related to LOTR.

Spoony looks so cute in the puffy sleeve tunic! Makes me fangirl for him all over again. I loved the Zelda joke, and I literally spit up my soda when he whipped out the gunblade. Good man! Have a cookie.

This video was so awesome, it makes me want to pickup The Spoony One and place him on a platinum platform. Read this message Noah: YOU ARE #1. It's like The Spoony Experiment slapped a turbo on it's engines and hit the NITRO button.

That scene with Gandalf and his grenade launcher was priceless.

I could never play the ULTIMA games; they always evaded my grasp. Thanks for covering these games- in the most legendary way possible.

  • Reaki

Spoony, oh you cunning beast. Every time I start doubting you really are the funniest person on the interwebs, you blow me away with something. Thou art god amongst men.

Eh, you should watch it and make up your own mind. I just wouldn't recommend it if you have any idea of what the Dune series is all about, but then again, that's just me.

Ahhhh Ultima. A series of games I somehow missed even though I've been playing games since dos. Actually, funnily enough my first dos game was Pools of Darkness, one of the gold box games. On a monochrome moniter. My god that was a pain to play lol. Of course at the time I was like, 3, and while I could understand how to move around and do stuff, I couldn't actually figure out how to do the elemental cave. Speaking of which, I've played the 4 main gold box games, without a manual. That is incredibly difficult the first time through lol.

As for the review itself, games back then all were totally batshit insane TBH. Mind you I only remember as far back as the gold box games, and the apogee games, crystal caves, biomenace, and similer games. Actually Monster Bash probably had the most batshit insane and silly plot ever. Commander Keen managing a close second. Because I could never decide whether commander keen was ever actually happening, or if he just had a friggin awesome imagination.

You certainly went all out doing additional things for this. And throwing in the triforce as the triangle… genius. There was more but I can't remember what else I wanted to say, usually I type this down while I watch the video. Wickedness. keep it up.

Excellent work, good sir. The sign with the guns, triangle and GUNBLADE… pure awesome.

In a wonderful case of life imitates art Richard Garriot plunked down $30 million in gold to the Russian Space Agency for a seat on one of their rockets to the International Space Station. Weather or not this is part of a quest to impress a princess enough to give him a time machine to go back and kill Bin Laden remains to be seen. Of course Richard Garriot can't hold a candle to whacked out millionaire Elon Musk who simply designed his own line of rockets…at least not until he equips a blaster rifle.

  • gszx1337

Tie Fighters, Orcs, Princesses, Sorcerers, Space Shuttles, and Phazroz in the same game? Holy shit, why haven't I been playing Ultima my whole life?!

Loved the use of the Space Balls theme. ;)

  • Dreammirror

Man this review takes me back. 1980 saw ultima the age of darkness released, but if memory serves, it was also the year that Zork came out -text based game only ugh. Sad as they appear now, back then they were the BOMB! It was all the kids in 6th grade were talking about-who did what, what did it take to pass a certain boss, etc. Crude, simple by todays standards, it was nontheless a very nostalgic feeling as I watched this review and was taken back to the days of yesteryear where wireframe graphics and basic programing were the IN thing :P. Thanks for the memories Spoony! :) Oh and btw my first game system was a Vic 20—which came even before the advanced Commadore 64 lol. It had a tape drive (10-15min to download a simple program). Still have that in storage I think. ugh now I feel old…

  • http://twitter.com/interludeauthor Sean Glenn Driscoll

    Wait.

    WHAT.

I remember playing this game when I was a kid, but I don't remember space shuttles and tie fighters. That's glorious.

Also, the Austrian Death Machine cover of the Terminator theme at the end was, understandably, epic.

I've been lurking on your site for like 2 years, finally chiming in. Loved the review, can't wait to see more, and I'd love to see more of final fantasy ten.

  • Son_Of_Jack_Deth

I agree with Food, that you should see it and judge for yourself, but I found it a horrible review. Mainly because all she says the whole review is “I don't get it”. Then what is the review of?

It just doesn't say anything. But perhaps you'll enjoy it.

  • landofunk

Hoo boy! *looks at watch* It's going to be a while until we make it to Pagan: Ultima 8..That's the only one of this series I played on my glorious IBM Compatible 386 monster tower!!!

  • notyoursavior78

I remember reading about how insane the first couple Ultima games were, but I never actually saw much gameplay footage from it. At the very least I never saw the Tie Fighter battle. I can't believe that was in a Ultima game lol anyways great reviews so far! I wasn't sure how soon you'd be starting this but I was hoping you at least get the first few parts out pretty soon after showing the Ultima IX box.

    I was not disappointed :)

  • sniktbub

Dude, that was AWESOME. Your production value has really skyrocketed (forgive the pun), you've got better backgrounds with a much less noticeable green screen effect, more costumes and props, and holy shitballs, you can Triforce. Also loved the Austrian Death Machine rendition of the Terminator theme at the end.

  • http://twitter.com/thebluesader AJ

Add the Shuttle Blacksmith and the Spoony Gandalf to the list of Classic Spoony Shorts. Kick ass.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Novak83 Ed Novak

Oh my god, dude. I think this might be my favorite review you've ever done. I had no IDEA the mind-blowing awesomeness that was concealed under Ultima 1's veneer of old-school medieval fantasyishness. I never got far enough in the game to see any of it; didn't play it until it came free with an issue of PC Gamer in the mid 90's, and it was all a bit too alien for a guy who spent his 80's with nothing more complicated than an NES. This is hugely eye-opening…I finally understand why Lord British is such a damned legend.

Also, the costumes and backdrops were awesome! Looks like Premiere Pro's working out for you. Seriously, that was some Angry Joe-rivalling production, there.

I offer you a slow clap, sir.

Ok, Spoony, you deleted one comment of mine in the Arnold video, and I dont know why and it sucks.

About this review, it is great, I was surprised, to be honest that this is one of the first times I actually see somone do this ''comic acting'' with costumes and did it right, no overacting, no long action scenes, and I liked it. I think this is the way to go.

About Ultima I loved the series in the past, not ever U is good through, there is 2 or 3 terrible games in the series. But U Online is EPIC, possibly the best MMO ever made. I played that for like years.

Anyway, I think the real ''gold ages' of computer RPG began with Fallout 1 and till around Baldur's Gate 2 and IWD2. That was the best ages of RPG.

Once again, a hilarious retrospective at a past game, and one that, from what I've heard, certainly set the bar for a lot of other games to come. I really loved this review and laughed my bit off at Gandalf taking out an Ak-47 and a Phazor on the Balrog.

Also, loved the Star Sapphire ring that you were wearing. I own one myself, and recognized it immediately.

Guy, wait until Ultima IV and V. Those games are holy crap brilliant.

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/LordKarnov42 LordKarnov42

Well, good on yer. The NES/SNES ports of the Ultima games were absolutely crap. IV and VI were -decent-, but III, V, and VII were just terrible. Absolutely unlike the originals. So, it's good you didn't put effort into beating them. The only console version of Ultima that does justice to the original is Ultima IV for the Sega Master System. [and the music still isn't as good as an Apple II with a Mockingboard sound card]

    Well done Spoony.

The Ultima series is one of of my favorite computer game series of all time (…Well, until Ultima IX beat the series to death with a blunt object,) and I can't wait to see your take on the rest of the games. I wrote my own (still incomplete. Need to get off my ass and fix that) retrospective on the series on my own, completely unread-by-others blog, but I'm thrilled to see someone with far more talent than myself take the series on. Especially when you hit the tail end of the series. Ultima IX (and a lesser extent VIII) deserves all the vitriol you can muster.

  • http://www.facebook.com/otakugal15 Shannon Leonard

Hahaha. That review just makes me wanna draw a picture of Spoony in a speeder running over Orcs. And with all the Doctor Who refs, maybe he has the 4th Doctor's scarf trailing behind….May jot this down for later contemplation.

Spoony you mentioned the “Eagle Lord of the Rings Plot Hole” and I just have to say I have to refute that! I know it's a minor point, I'm a huge fan, and Im loving this series, but think about it tactically:

The birds were only able to enter safely after the ring had been destroyed and all the forces of Sauron had been defeated or simply faded away after Sauron's powers diminished.

If Gandalf had sent them in before hand they would have been shot down or torn apart by goblin, orc, or easterling archers- not to mention the air defenses provided by the Nazgul. And if they failed the ring would have dropped right into Sauron's hands. Sending in two hobbits on a covert mission into Mordor was risky enough.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mattias-Granlund/100000618693819 Mattias Granlund

a mix of elven archers on the birds, numbers, Gandalfs magic and the right approach angle could easly out manoeuvre those problems

  • lucan946

This reminds me greatly of Dwarf Fortress, at least in graphics style.

That being said, it's about 1/10000th as complicated and deep.

  • EpeEntertainment

and I didn't think it was possible, but you made Gandalf even more bad ass… go Spoony!

  • http://twitter.com/eruvadhril Danielle Clarke

As a Lord of the Rings fangirl, Spoony Gandalf was the GREATEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!

  • http://twitter.com/eruvadhril Danielle Clarke

The birds might have got them into Mordor, but Sauron would have just packed the little Room For Throwing Stuff Into Lava full of soldiers and had the Nazgul on their pterosaurs around the top of the volcano the second they got past the gate. The whole point of the secret squirrel approach was that Sauron wouldn't guess that they would try to destroy the Ring rather than use it. If they came swooping in on eagles and made a beeline for Mount Doom, he'd probably twig fairly quickly.
Plus, the eagles weren't keen on getting that heavily involved. They might be considered to be assholes that way, but what can you do.

    • Tai_MT

My question has always been… Why does it have to be THAT particular volcano? All volcanos are connected on the planet via the same magma and etcetera. Wouldn’t any volcano have done the job if they were dropping the ring in? If not, WHY not? And don’t give me the nonsense of “It has to be destroyed by the fires that forged it!”. No, bullshit, doesn’t work. If it has to be the same fires that forged it, then you’d have to take it to a FORGE that would have been burning SINCE THE RINGS CREATION. If all you need is lava, surely you could have magically superheated some rock and plopped it in to melt it.
Hell, what’s even more confusing is why they just don’t cast a 200×200 lead block AROUND the ring and drop it into the deepest ocean they can find. Also, is there no magic to shoot the ring into space or another dimension? no way to cast the ring into gold to match it, so that it’s hard to pick out?
Surely there are many more solutions to the Evil Ring problem than “we must go to heavily guarded volcano and drop this object into it”.

      • Cameron Vale

It’s not a magic thing, it’s just that Mt. Doom is the hottest volcano in Middle Earth, it was the only thing hot enough to forge the ring so it’s logical that it would be the only place that can melt it. And you can’t just magically superheat some rock, magic isn’t like a genie’s wish.

        • Tai_MT

If it’s not like a genie’s wish, then how the heck does it even work in Middle Earth to begin with? Much of it takes almost zero time to cast or does crazy impossible things with nature. I’m fairly certain you could have probably just thrown the ring into the same pit as the Balrog if it was all lava and hellfire at the bottom.

I remember getting half my programming class playing this on the 286 terminals in high school. You forgot to mention how much Ultima 1 rewards you being a filthy thief, though. You can steal all items from any store, even if they don't actually sell them, so you can walk right into the first town and steal yourself a blaster rifle and a vacuum suit from the shop that sells a knife and cloth armor, and dare those guards to try and stop you. I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure you can steal the space shuttle, too.

  • foiden

The Ultima Series was pretty much ahead of its time. It's almost odd how quickly they got complicated considering this and WIzardry hardly had ANY RPGs before them to draw reference from. They are still considered, by and large, the first computer RPGs in existence. The bad thing is that they don't all age as well, and newer video-game players just wont get them. It's almost hilarious how some could harp on the graphics because back in the day, these *were* good graphics. Before that we had text. Just text. And we still had text adventures made after these. So unless you think the letter B looks better than this, it's hard to complain. They were still around top billing at their time for the technology.

Anyway, games like these eventually gave birth to Dragon Quest, so I still consider them historical things. And yes, Richard Garriot did deserve the title of King Nerd. He outdid a lot of folks people considered Nerds, at the time. It was kind of amazing how he fit all those ideas into Ultima 1. It's like he hardly had the memory to do that.

My first Ultima Experience was Ultima 3, I just barely missed out on 2. Ultima 3 was amazing to me, at the time, but not as amazing as the ones that followed. Once they led up to the Avatar story arc, things really started to fall into place, and the time compression between Earth and Britannia really started to get entertaining, and somewhat consistent.

Playing a friend's copy of Wizardry was probably among the first graphical RPGs I've even seen. That is, ones where you get to move a character instead of the entire interaction being text you typed. But it was the Ultimas that really got my start. Then Bards Tale, eventually Wasteland, and a bunch of others to follow.

  • Salculd

  • http://celluloidandsilicon.blogspot.com/ Avenging_Mike

The ability to mod does not gain a game any extra points from me, since that’s no longer the developers putting the work in, and Oblivion was broken as fuck. Here’s a handy guide to winning Oblivion:
    Make a mage.
Create a spell that does every type of damage, and lowers every resist. You’ll start out at touch range, but can improve the spell as you gain levels. Eventually, your death touch becomes a deathball, and absolutely nothing in the game will ever pose any kind of threat.

In addition to being horribly broken combat-wise, there’s many other things that simply suck ass about Oblivion. Including the gameplay. Now, mods may actually fix any and all problems I’ve ever had with the game, but as I said, that’s no longer the game the developers made, so it doesn’t count.

    Also: Horse Armor DLC.

Gandalf’s quest driven by his love of the people of Middle Earth, hence he is a member of the Star Sapphire core. Ever since Geoff Johns decided to make a Lantern corp for every color in the rainbow, Spoony basically puts on a lantern ring for each character he dresses up as. He had a black ring for the dead Spoony story arch, a red ring of rage for ultimate spoony, and a yellow ring for the Gate Keeper of the blagole for the Nightmare review. He’s probably done others, but those are the ones I can think off the top of my head.

Given that my good old AD&D Dungeon Master’s Guide has stats for firearms all the way up to laser rifles in the back, I am beginning to suspect that sudden technological event horizons were a common thing in D&D once upon a time… Come to think of it, I think the death rays are still in the 3.5 DMG along with the Renaissance black powder guns…

this is the first time i ever comment on this site so i hope this works, okay *ahem* this guy didn’t understand your comment. allow me to explain, in case you don’t know any of this. he is calling you names because of the M.Bison/Balrog thing, the ”off course!” gag. this is from a movie called ”Street Fighter” witch is based on the same game series, and here is the thing, M.Bison is known in the original Japanese as Balrog. the change was made because M.Bison as a boxer was seen as too close to the real live boxer M.Tyson so for the western release M.Bison became Balrog and Balrog M.Bison. HOWEVER what this trol didn’t realize is that you were talking about the Lord of the Rings Balrog, kinda sad and funny really :P

and yes the Balrog skit is hilarious! :D

Hey man, thanks for the clarification, had a feeling it was something with the Street Fighter clip but wasn’t sure.

Appreciate you taking the time to help me understand what was up and letting me know I was talking about the “right” thing.  That made my day. :)

        • HEYitsnotbraindead

no wait a second it was even more complicated that this.
          i just remembered,
          M.Bison was VEGA in Japan
          Vega was Balrog in Japan

          whatever :P

Great review, Spoony. Been a fan of your reviews since the KODT days, and your doing them for my favorite video game series of all time is like a dream. Kudos for The Irresponsibles theme song!

The Phantom Menace ending in the vid was GOLDEN.

  • Segatron

Seems that there could be a lot more sci-fantasy RPGs out there, it’s not as though they don’t work when done right.

Holy shit. If Gandalf beat the Balrog with a grenade launcher, shit would have been even more awesome!

I just bought Ultima 1 through 7-2. Been having a damn good time with them.

What do you do with a Triangle? Well, what do you do with the Ruler in Earthbound!?

NOTHING! Useless items are an on-going joke in RPGs.

    • RobinAdams78

But the triangle isn’t useless; it’s one of the best weapons in the game. It hurts monsters… somehow.

You make this game sound like so much fun. XD I kind of want to play it now, just for the spaceships! I wish they’d make a modern version of it though. Good graphics + crack plot = yes.

I love re-watching these. Spoony just has so much to say about these games… I feel how important they are for him. And it makes it so much more fun.

I used to do the same thing in my elementary school computer lab. We also had a few IBMs with Commander Keen.

Damn Gandalf is packing!!! The only way Gandalf could be even more bad ass, is if he were carrying a mini gun.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Farshnuke Gordon Jones

    Okay that is badass

  • Remus

“Elvish?” Fortes fortuna adiuvat is latin. Fortune favors the brave.

Wait did Spoony flim the Balrog in 48 frames?

  • Morgil27

Soooo… was Spoony-Gandalf a Red Lantern, or did Spoony just fuck up. It can’t be Narya on his finger since Gandalf kept it hidden until after the one ring was destroyed.

  • Barron Tide

I played the original of this out of the plastic bag in black and white on the Apple 2. There was no game even close to this at the time. What I liked about the game was that you had no idea what it was you were supposed to do. I think we played a couple of months before we figured it all out. I remember a lot of time was spent killing the sea monsters for gold and experience. I also remember the sense of accomplishment when getting powerful enough to kill everyone in the castle and the town. We played it so much that the computer would actually overheat.
