Ultima 6: The False Prophet

The Spoony One | Nov 14 2010 | more notation(s) |

You don’t suppose anyone was using the Codex of Infinite Wisdom before I swiped it, do ya?

Edit: I forgot to credit Artiph, who generously provided most of the game footage for this review. Sorry about that!

Animated intro created by Nick Dobkin.

Wow. I thought I was finally going to get a FIRST on a spoony video…

    Good job, Don.

Wait, what are you doing up and reviewing?

  • Anonymous

    Great video.

  • http://solrokentertainment.blogspot.com Sol Rok Entertainment

Wait, Burton can death ray? Awesome. And Sinestro rings aren’t magic you stupid Gate Cleaner. Either way, I think I like Spoony’s current storyline better than Linkara’s. So, what else can Burton do?

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. It’s close enough to magic, after all.

It’s great to see you putting up new content but I’m just curious, is the song in the opening title sequence a live version or is someone else other than The Irresponsibles doing it?

    • http://twitter.com/irresponsibles The Irresponsibles

hey mate, not that’s definitely us, we re-recorded the song for our new album & Spoony started using the new version as of today!

  • http://twitter.com/alllucky7s David Lecina

Looks a lot like Tibia. Can’t say that’s a good thing.

  • Anonymous

I like the animated opening sequence because finally Burton gets to do stuff….but I sort-of miss the old opening credits style too. A combo animated/live action sequence would blow my mind and be all kinds of awesome. Anyway, I love seeing new reviews from you when I come home from work in the morning. Good work as always.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Woody-Wood/546571349 Richard ‘Woody’ Wood

Dude, I like the new intro. Also it sounds like a different version of the theme song being used too. I actually did crap myself when that jester guy showed up, I hate clowns.

    • http://twitter.com/irresponsibles The Irresponsibles

yup that’s right mate, newly recorded version & today is the first time anyone’s heard it!

  • Madpotator

So this is why Scarlett was hitting you with a rubber chicken.

Also, when did Burton learn a death ray attack?

    Sinestro Clown…it works

  • http://twitter.com/Suomidude Niko Penttilae

Blagho (Black hole)! This was a refreshing change to the Ultima review series, even though I personally I enjoyed the ones with just information. And I’ve gotta get one of those death rays these days.

Nice cliffhanger. But goddamn, Spoonster, you haven’t yet reviewed Deadly Premonition part. 2!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Ferguson/1781709437 Michael Ferguson

I believe I heard him say at Lordkat’s live stream that Deadly premonition is dead.
Meaning I doubt he will do another part.
At least not anytime soon or at all.

Great review, informative and funny! Although, I don’t know what people’s complaints were about in the previous videos, I still found them funny.

Have to say I like the old intro theme better though.

    • http://twitter.com/irresponsibles The Irresponsibles

fair enough comment mate- the new version is from our new album, we recorded it in a MUCH better studio & the clarity is a lot better. But we understand some people will be very attached to the old version

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Timo-Takalo/503889411 Timo Takalo

Speaking as someone who loves this game, I would say some of your problems are being unfamiliar with the interface. It is annoying to sort through the stuff you find in containers, but it’s at least a little better to (M)ove it to the adjacent spot instead of picking it all up. For the poisoning, that’s cured by the first circle ‘dispel magic’ spell. I admit it’s unintuitive, but after you figure that out, things get easier.

Chuckles, you broke the rules of the game yourself when you said ‘again’. Spoony, are you going to review Worlds of Ultima and Ultima Underworld games? Those would be chronologically next, except for Underworld 2.

    • http://spoonyexperiment.com The Spoony One

DAMN IT! I need to hit Chuckles again…

    • NeroAngelo

to be fair man, he has to play badguy on good games too

  • Anonymous

That was a barrel of laughs Spoony. I love how Chuckles is a much more subtle and on-par version of “Douchy McNitpick” and instead of insulting your audience you list their earnest concerns. I love how the plot is weaving slowly together and can’t wait for the final confrontation…. Will it be FFX or Ultima9? Who knows???

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Garrett/100000161566426 Ian Garrett

So Spoony now have to deal with Gatekeeper and Pumpkinhead, plus Black Spoony and whoever he’s recruiting. Boy, Spoony pisses a lot of people off.

  • Psy Crow

Spoony cosplaying as Kefka?! …sorry, just kidding. Awesome video as usual!

  • Anonymous

You also forgot to review Blood Bowl, sir! While it’s good fun and very loyal to the board game, if ever there was a game so crooked and biased against the Player that it would likely inspire a more crazed ape-like fury than SWAT 4, Blood Bowl is surely it.

  • http://twitter.com/rabidlemur Lizzie Hupcey

Oooo, that’s the album version I take it? Shiny. I was so happy to see a new Ultima review up. I’ve never even PLAYED any of these! Apparently, you’ve made them really interesting to me. Bravo, sir.

I don’t know why but Spoony getting hit with the chicken was the funniest thing.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RGFHXSV4BXSG5VQ7XUNY76CWMQ JAMES

Great work as always Spoony. I can’t help but wonder if Scarlet had too much fun hitting you with a rubber chicken?

I like the obscure Princess Bride reference too.

I hope you are feeling better Spoony.

  • Anonymous

Hmmm…for some reason I want spoony to be a Red Ranger costume when this whole final showdown happens. Since Linkara now has the Green Ranger costume, it would be amazing to see a teamup.

  • Anonymous

Good morning, Spoony and fellow Spooners.

    1. Run for your life, Spoony! The clown is Lord Terraptus! Either that, or you can make him funny again by getting Baba Yaga to lift her curse (Quest for Glory 4, for the, like, EVERYBODY who didn’t get that unnecessarily obscure joke).
    2. he mentioned the nightmare challenge. He Mentioned The Nightmare Challenge. HE MENTIONED THE NIGHTMARE CHALLENGE! My inner, whiny, little fanboy is appeased. All is right with the world.

  • Anonymous

That fucking Chuckles doesn’t deserve “Meat Circus” as his theme…
And I have to say, having Chuckles around as a pastiche of the “Less-patient fans”, to put it nicely, is a good idea rather than ranting and raving.

Also, I can’t stop laughing at the little richard joke.
Keep up the good work, sir.

  • Anonymous

Ugh, Chuckles reminds me of that freaking annoying clown from Devil May Cry 3… and I didn’t even play DMC3!

He reminds me of the jester in the Discworld games. OOHHHH CHUCKY CHUCKY CHUKKYYYYYYYYY

  • http://www.youtube.com/thefaustianman Faust

Great job to all those involved, Spoony, Scarlett, Lord British and Burton. Quite entertaining. Spoony, hope your new meds are working on your mallory heart.

And how do you always find the most Kick Ass music for your credits? “Heroes” by Motorhead, now this!? Rock on sir! By the Gods you have earned it.

Holy crap! You remembered that you didn’t finish the Gate Cleaner’s task (as well as the Minority Report). I don’t think you told us enough about why you hated this game. The stuff you mentioned seems like minor inconveniences at best. The inclusion of the Sinestro corps. power ring gave me a nerd boner the likes of which not even God has seen.

How nice to find out you’re finally gonna tie up those loose ends. I always did wonder what became of the Minority Report review and I also commented a while back about the deadline that was set by the Gate Cleaner.

Interface-wise, this game was in an uncomfortable intermediate position between U5’s quick, roguelike-ish keyboard-driven interface and U7’s totally mouse-driven, full-screen interactive world. So, it makes sense in context.

…Wow. Spoony did you hear the new Irresponsible track, pretty boys? It’s more awesome than the one you use, in my opinion. Since they are kind of the godfather band of the spoony experiment, why don’t you try showcasing their songs on your openings?

    • http://twitter.com/irresponsibles The Irresponsibles

Man, you should be. The song is solid. Admitedly, I don’t like female vocals that much, but I don’t know why, I can’t really see a male vocalist on charge, and everything works out fine. Hope I can get that album!

I don’t want to be an ass, but the new intro is very poorly animated.I thought you were only gonna use it once or twice, not make it common. Great episode though, so ridicules that you can’t cure poison without British.

    Chuckles… (shudder)

I loved the review, I loved the disturbingly cheery clown music (yea Gods, that was twisted), and I loved the Sinestro Corps reference (obviously you’re a Green Lantern reader), but… well, it kills me to say this, but couldn’t you have used the actual score to Nightmare on Elm Street in that last scene, instead of the cheesy knock-off stuff from some Halloween Hits album?

Sorry, I’m just a raging movie-score snob. Still, -2 pts.

Ahaha, this is still my second-favourite of the series, bust I can understand what you’re getting at here. I guess I somehow adapted to the engine without problems, but listening to you… Yes, all that stuff is very very true.

As for the story, well, the plot itself isn’t that good, yes. The idea behind it, I think, is awesome. The fact alone, that “fight the evil” becomes “learn about those, you once thought of as evil” is in my opinion even better than the idea of Ultima IV.

Oh, and BTW – the Idea of the Codex being a book of infinite wisdom located in an ethereal realm is inspired by the idea of the Akasha Chronicle, which some new religious movements of the late 19th and early 20th century had. That “book” was supposed to be a book containing all information of past, present and the future fate of the universe, and it was accessible by meditation inside a “higher dimension” … – or something like that.

Just to say: It was, as many things, inspired by an idea in real life, not just made up.

To say one last thing about the review: I think it was probably the best yet.
Now I can’t wait to see what you will say about my favourite game of all time. Will you love it? Will you hate it? Ahhh, the susense… I hope it won’t take as long as V to VI.

That was great, epic ending, what will happen next?

Great to see you back at work, Spoony. I’m really loving this Ultima series. Lots of fun.

That’s a really clever storyline twist, turning the situation on its head and making your character out to be a thoughtless douche rather than a pure messiah. Pretty crazy. Too bad the actual execution had so many problems. Ah, well.

I hope your allusions to “reviews you forgot” brings you back around to Deadly Premonition. That was a good video; I really want to see what else happens.

Ooooh yeeeeah, the other Nightmare/Atmosfear gaaames, I forgot about those and the fact the Gatecleaner only gave you a year to do those since Pumpkinhead kinda took the forefront then. Neat, you actually incorporated that into your storyline, how fun! I love making mistakes or coincidences into plot points that you can say you had planned all along.

Chuckles is definitely the scariest thing to grace this site yet. Good thing Burton just happened to have a death ray. Also, I forgot how awesome Manowar is, thanks for reminding me.

I heard that someone made a remake of Ultima 6 using a modern engine. Anyone know how it was? Oh and Chuckles will now haunt my nightmares; both your version, Spoony and the one in the game that appears to have a blonde porn ‘stache.

    • Anonymous

Hi, it was made by an independent international team. The remake was developed as a mod for Dungeon Siege. You can find more info on the official website http://www.u6project.com There is also a remake of Ultima 5 called Ultima V: Lazarus (www.u5lazarus.com) that was created earlier (final version released in 2006) the U6 remake and is done the same way (mod for DS). The core tech team behind both mods was mostly the same, but most of the other team members were specific for each project.

There are also some videos on Youtube if you would like to see both games in action (search Ultima 6 project or Ultima V lazarus).

Good to see you back to doing game reviews, Spoony! I know that other commenters may have advised otherwise, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY think that you should bring back the manic rage and humor that characterised your older reviews (which is what made them so great); and I also really hope you plan on finishing the Final Fantasy X review!

Alright, Ultima VII is next. It’s usually considered to be the best of the series, but I’m interested in what Noah thought of it. After all, it has some of the same issues that drove him crazy in VI (the infinite superfluous items, items on the ground stacking) but it’s so much easier to navigate it all with its mouse-supported interface. And the world of Britannia in VII just has so much… STUFF in it.

You know, Ultima 6 was probably one of my favorite games in the series, because it was the one I got to work the best besides 5, being the whippersnapper I am. But you do bring up some good points. I never actually finished the game because I kept getting lost, which the game exacerbated because it didn’t zoom out into a world map when you left the towns like in the last five games.

I think the reason that the spears and throwing axes are listed separately is because they don’t stack in your inventory. That makes it another coding issue, I know.

On the plus side, there’s the Orb of the Moons. You can’t tell me with a straight face that wasn’t a handy tool to have.

As for the plot holes you brought up, I guess you’ve got a point, but it’s not like there haven’t been uneasy truces with unsolved tensions between societies in real life. I’m thinking of the end of the Civil War and Reconstruction. There are scars from that conflict that still linger today.

And was it really made clear that the virtues of the humans and gargoyles both came from the Codex? I thought the human virtues were created by Lord British before the Codex was even found. It does raise kind of a thorny issue with the Codex quests in 5, though. As for reading the Codex the entire way through, I don’t think that’s actually possible. The Codex is always open to the page containing the information you need to know and nothing more. I guess it could have warned us about future conflicts like the conflict with the gargoyles, so there is that.

I also remember the void not being the origin of the Codex, just neutral territory where both races could access it. Still doesn’t explain where the Vortex Cube came from.

Oh yeah, and I just remembered that I was traumatized when I accidentally killed a cat in that game. Am I a pussy or what?

You also forgot to continue your Let’s Play of Deadly Premonition. I’m still waiting for Part 2. I know I can just watch the other ones at Giant Bomb, but I don’t think it would be the same.

I think Nakar did the exact same thing to Chuckles in his LP of Ultima 6. If you haven’t read Nakar’s LPs of various Ultima games, do it; they’re some of the funniest things you’ll find on the LP Archive.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to add that I never noticed the in-game music because that was one of the parts I couldn’t get to work! Thank God for small favors, I guess.

I liked your reviews the way they used to be in your older videos, when you would cuss or shout when the game pisses on you. Now it’s all calmness and suchness. I’m not sure if that’s what you were getting at with your jester outfit, but I hope it isn’t the direction you’re going to be taking in the future. Stick with Dr. Insano.

Firstly- great review. I like when they’re informative like in this series of games. Kinda UWW-ish, it’s entertaining with or without jokes. Chuckles is absolutely frightening. But the scariest thing was the iconic musical sting at the end, a terrifying hint of what dreams may come…

You know, False Prophet was the first Ultima game I ever played, but it was on the SNES. Admittedly I was like… nine? Ten, maybe, when I played it, but I don’t remember the item stacking being the issue it apparently was in the CD version, or the graphics being quite so impenetrable. It’s been like fifteen years, so I could just be remembering it wrong, but if I’m not it’s kind of interesting that apparently the console port did get significant changes. I didn’t even know they DID ports back then. How did they have time in between fighting off wooly mammoths and transcribing their history onto cave walls?

Actually, although I never finished this, I still credit it as being one of the main reasons I kept playing RPGs. Prior to this, my only experience was with a few Final Fantasy titles and Zelda… which, while far from bad, were linear as all get-out. I remember it BOGGLING MY MIND at that tender age that I could go wherever the hell I wanted, do whatever I wanted… heck, I don’t think I ever progressed the main story at all, I just traveled around, stole things, and got killed by new and interesting creatures. Which… is actually like every experience I’ve had with the Elder Scrolls games too, come to think of it. I guess I’m a bad hero, because upon receiving freedom in a game my first reaction is to go “Screw you guys!” and shirk all my responsibilities.

Anyway, thanks for reviewing this one! And the whole series, actually. I kind of prefer your more structured reviews like this. Still funny, more informative. I’ll probably never play the games, but it was really interesting to see how they evolved.

Ehh… The videos are starting to look too much like “The Angry Video Game Spoon”. Before, Spoony was unique, his joke were more satirical. Now it just feels like Spoony filling in for James Rolfe. And please, oh please, bring back the original intro. The new one feels like something from Newgrounds. Oh well… I guess change is inevitable.

    • Anonymous

Hey, now somebody worked very hard on that new intro, probably without getting paid for the work. Animation takes a great deal of time and it would be disrespectful to the original animator of the intro to not use it, at least for a time. His old intro was just a cacophony of clips pasted together anyways so it is nice to see a bit of change. As for the style: I dunno, I don’t see much difference between this and his old reviews outside of the fact he is adding characters and showing off his new editing chops a bit more. Remembering back to The Thing or that Robin Hood game where he just sat and ranted about a game showing clips of it, it is nice to see him grow as a producer.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Derek-Bradley/100000132464083 Derek Bradley

As for the animation, we’ve already seen it multiple times already. I think we’ve “honored” the artist. Heck, put the thing as a permanent video on the homepage! I’m cool with that! The old intro felt more synced into what the show is about. This intro feels like a fan made homage to what has already done. It’s like making a replica of the Mona Lisa out of macaroni and glue. Sure, it’s impressive, but I don’t really want to look at it umpteen million times. Yep, a fan made a trailer! Cool! Can we get the other one back now?

As for the style, I would have less of a problem if every single reviewer on the internet didn’t do the exact same thing. Like a sorority’s periods synchronizing, it’s like all the reviewers are slowly evolving into this reviewing clone army.

It’s not the characters and editing chops I have a problem with. It’s the “violence is funny” theme that every reviewer seems to gravitate towards. For me, it doesn’t work with Spoony, most because I don’t see him as the violent type, so it comes out forced and contrived. Noah is a MUCH better at snarky and smart ass remarks than violence.

Ah well, enough ranting for now.

Spoony, will you be doing the apocryphal Ultimas as well? Using the Ultima6 engine? I can’t remember the subtitle for the sub-franchise, Lost Realms, maybe? I remember one title was “The Savage Empire”. Basically it’s going back to some of the planets you visited in Ultima2. Which would have disappeared as you restored time after destroying Minax, hence rather apocryphal.

Or if you keep only the canonical Ultimas I suppose the next one will be Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss. This one seriously needs to be reviewed. It is ground breaking in so many ways it is staggering. The game was FP realtime, had crouching and jumping, swimming, sloping floors; and it all came out in 1991. A year before Wolfenstein 3D. Two and a half years before Doom, and even doom didn’t have any of that stuff. More so, it told a story and had npc characters, something that wouldn’t be around in FPS shooters until Half-Life a whole seven years later. When you look at it that way, it is mindblowing. It would take even longer for there to be more FP realtime RPGs to arrive, if one doesn’t count the sequel.

This is just my opinion, but I can’t stand the episodic storyline stuff that some reviewers shove into their stuff. I’m thinking specifically of Linkara who thought it was brilliant to end quite a few of his videos with some utterly retarded storyline, woefully acted by himself. It’s cringe-worthy. People don’t watch the reviews to see some horribly nerdy melodrama.

    • Anonymous

I would respectfully disagree. While there have indeed been a few cringe-worthy instances in Linkara’s videos, for the most part, I really enjoy his narratives. And Spoony’s as well. But, then that’s just me.

      • Anonymous

I can take it or leave the extra story element. It doesn’t really do anything for me, but it doesn’t really hurt the reviews either. A lot of times they just seem kinda corny, but don’t bother me in the big picture.

    • Anonymous

I completely disagree. The humorous story lines are fun as hell and spice up a review. Bring ‘m on!

    • Anonymous

I tend to agree. Some of the costume bits are amusing, but they quickly become distracting and overwhelm the content of the review 90% of the time.

It’s especially annoying when characters are used by a creator to take shots at elements of his or her fanbase. Both Noah and Doug have done this now, and Linkara’s rant at the beginning of his latest History of MMPR segment, while not in character, was similar in tone. I find this pretty off-putting. Criticism is part and parcel of having your name out there and cultivating a fanbase. Fame is and always has been a double edged sword. There is also difference between trolling and legitimate heartfelt criticism, and people who make a living attacking other people’s work should realize that.

I’m disappointed that Spoony decided to jump on the bandwagon with a character of this nature.

All that having been said, I enjoy this series and hope to see more work in this vein. Spoony clearly has a real passion for these games, and it’s that energy and enthusiasm that drew me to nostalgic commentators in the first place.

Get me on the “partially agree” wagon. If it is set up right, and the reviewer is a good actor as well, it can be hilarious. I have to admit, that I don’t like it when Linkara does it. Sure, there are a lot of in-references, but they often seem disjointed, and well…. I don’t think he’s that great of an actor.

Here it is ok IMO (OK mind you, not great), because Chuckles is indeed a mainstay of Ultima, and many players have thought of and executed devious plans to kill him i exotic ways because of his annoyance. Also, while short, Spoony explained the game well enough to be interesting, and opinionated enough to be entertaining.

I also loved Doug’s Nostalgia Critic breakdown after talking to the director of My Pet Monster, because it really set up the next “review”, and Doug is one hell of an actor IMO. That’s how I think one does it the right way.

But when it is overdone, and begins to overshadow the review, yes, it should not exist. I said here it is OK because of the context, but overall, every time it crashes into the middle of a review, it is annoying. If it’s just the prolougue and epilogue, so people who are not interested can skip it – then I can accept it no matter how I feel about it myself, and those that like it can enjoy it.

The intro movie for the game is one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. The music is perfect and it is just so eerie; it sets up a great story even if the ending seems kinda rushed or too convenient.

“Catcalls, the dagger, a scream, Death…..

Pandemonium. Shrieks of rage, of terror.

From the inevitable, and impossibility emerges.

    You are still alive.”

It is just written in such a cool way. The review was pretty funny. Anyways only a few more left now. VII is often considered one of the best and then you get into VIII and IX which are the worst.

    • Anonymous

Spoony himself said he likes continuity in his video reviews..respect the artist man!!

      • Anonymous

Don’t worry, VIII is still an OK game, and especially after the patch, it was playable and still had an interesting storyline.

It was just EXTREMELY disappointing for everyone who hoped that they would further improve on what they did in VII. Overall, the arcade-like controls, the jumping mechanics, reduced interactivity, removal of character portraits during conversations, removal of unique sprites for the Avatar depending on gender and pigmentation (removing the option to choose that altogether), providing a much smaller world, forcing the player down a much more linear path when exploration and non-linear gameplay was a mainstay of the series, and probably many things more that I can’t think of at the top of my head… All that made the game – as Spoony said about Highlander II (although VIII isn’t THAT bad) – even worse than plain bad: It made it disappointing.

But of course, the true horror of Ultima IX was yet to come. Again Ultima IX wasn’t that bad from a technical standpoint – if you removed all the bugs, that is – but oh God.. oh GOD…. just wait for Spoony’s review, I think he will be able to put it in a way for people to understand the terror. Just remember: In one episode he ended on either reviewing Wing Commander: The Movie or Ultima IX. He chose WC:TM, which you can take as an indication, that Ultima IX is in it’s own right worse than that movie.

U6 was the first Ultima I played, it was on my fathers Amiga. I loved the game. He didn’t even hint on all the other wierd stuff that can happen, like when you search the body of animated object all strange stuff that comes out, like various items, floor tiles, and other things, at least on the amiga version they did.

    Also awaken spell.

  • http://openid-provider.appspot.com/tipazollik KilloZapit

Although some of the interface complaints are on the mark, I think Ultima 6 over all has some of the best gameplay of the series. It’s more streamlined and interactive then the previous games and more tactical then the later games. But was it perfect? Heck no. But I still liked it.

I agree that it could have used a way to choose what items in a pile you wanted to pick up (although, you don’t have to pick up everything in a pile, you could also move stuff out of the way, and for chests/bodies you can pick up the chest/body, take anything you want, then drop it again). And yes, some of the graphical icons are somewhat bad looking, but that is kind of a nitpick. I will say that Ultima Underworld used similar sized icons for graphics but they were heck of a lot better designed, so it’s not as much the resolution as it is just those graphics. And spears and things not stacking, I assume the engine just was not set up for stacking weapons. And yeah, the view was way to small.

I kind of think that Ultima 6 still does a lot of things right though. It combines dungeons, battle, and exploration into one game mode, it makes the world a heck of a lot more interactive, and it introduces NPC schedules and jobs. Most of these things are greatly expanded on in Ultima 7 of course, but most of the basic framework is here. By the way, fun fact: Any NPC is theoretically able to join your party and fight, and every NPC with mana can cast spells (though they need a spell book and to be put in manual mode for party members, and need special inviable items for NPCs). This is not exploited anywhere in-game but is rather interesting.

Overall, Ultima 6 may be my favorite of the series but I am not entirely sure I like it more then 7. Ultima Underworld may actually be my favorite too, but I am not sure if that counts.

You know…It’s because of you, Spoony, that I ordered the complete Ultima collection off Ebay, including Underworld 1 and 2.

The seller had made a special program that utilizes dosbox and it runs all of the games.

The story is so exotic that you dont care at all about the so-called ‘inferior’ graphics of the ultima games.

Underworld 1 and 2 have exellent graphics and music….It’s only a matter of time before Spoony reviews them, everyone….only a matter of time!

of course you forgot to review FFX and Persona 4 :D

This was an awesome review, and it really made me laugh (chicken wrangler… hehehe). The only problem I had with it was that it wasn’t long enough.

In any case, I can’t get over the clown thing. It’s somewhere stuck between Absolutely Fucking Brilliant and High Octane Nightmare Fuel.

… this is going to be another one of those things that wakes me up in the night screaming.

And if I hear another “Spoony Changed It, Now It Sucks” argument in the comments section I will kill whatever small furry animal is closest. This would be a problem because the only small furry animal near me is a chimera that has a very TARDIS-like anatomy where although it’s face is only about 10 cm big, it has a huge gaping maw and teeth that could swallow and destroy a Boeing 747.
(It’s honestly not the complaint itself that I mind (although personally I think Spoony’s only been getting better), but I have seen it so many times that it’s starting to trigger some sort of underlying sociopathic impulse.)

In conclusion I thank Spoony for his timely release of this great review. It has made a very pain-filled day of mine a fair bit brighter (cause god knows the oxycontin is only taking the edge off).

I think it’s pretty cool that you’ve got all your little plots worked out. Also, I might be reading too much into this (or listening, anyway) but was that a bar of Nightmare on Elm Street at the end just after The Gatekeeper said “He’ll be forever trapped in a nightmare.”?

    I wonder…

When I played Ultima six I would just use the Move command to move stuff that I didn’t want to pick up.

Besides inventory space was never a big thing in this game so you could just spam pick up and then sell everything in the nearest town.

The Pickpocket spell in this game was pretty awesome.

I was surprised you didn’t note the unfinished quest from the game where there was that ghost that you could never solve the murder of because the quest was never fully implemented in the final build. That drove me CRAZY trying to solve that thing until a decade later when I found out there was no way to do anything about it.

The ultima reviews are what I really hope to see when I come to the site. I especially liked that the gargoyles weren’t just demons who wanted to do evil.

The review was entertaining but I think you painted a bad picture of this game, its not a bad game at all, in fact its my favorite of the Ultima series since its the most open ended. Yea, the inventory was a pain, but not nearly as much as the pain in Ultima 7 of not being able to sell ANYTHING.

    • Anonymous

Well, you could sell gold and gems… And mutton… And drugs… Unfortunately not to little children, but at least you could steal the drugs FROM little children, perhaps that counts… OK, I’m losing my point here if I ever had one, but perhaps it’s just that I always thought it a bit sketchy that in RPGs all the vendors buy practically all the stuff you have readily, even if they should have no use for it.And while the inventory system was sometimes annoying, I found it to be extremely intuitive in VII. Somehow it even satisfied me, that I sometimes had to search through my backpack for stuff, like I would search through a real backpack.I guess it just worked for me… you can’t please everyone. Makes me wonder even more: Will Spoony hate/dislike VII or will he love it? Ahh, the suspense, the suspense… I hope it will be there soon…

(Please note, I did use the word Phazor, due to this being an Ultima game.)

I admit, I have never really played the game, although I really want to. they seem like something that even if you DON’T like to follow a story, you don’t HAVE to to enjoy it. Like Fable, you can follow the story, or choose to kill off people for your own entertainment. Over time, Ultima has been able to catch my interest, and due to one of the old ones (I forget which that allowed you to be a ‘other’ gender), and has been one of the only games that I have seen something like that, OTHER than the first fable game (I don’t recall dresses for men in Fable 2). Well, other than Smackdown 2 for the Playstation, if I remember correctly.

But enough out of me. Nice review Spoony, and I was wondering when you were going to bring back about the Nightmare Review.

Your new intro is cool but like every other video on the Channel Awesome site, I tend to skip them to get to the actual meat of your video. That shouldn’t affect you at all since you do not force us to watch an unskippable cut-scene that seems to cut a significant portion into the video.

The Ultima VI graphic engine was the first step of what had to become in the future, Ultima VII and its pretty simple interface. Still, the inventory management can be tedious and annoying. Ultima has always had its plotholes and wrong things and one of them is he Avatar being not so Virtuous in the games that followed Ultima IV, like in Ultima VI, where he has to slain the Gargoyles that have conquered the shrines, and then bring peace and harmony between the Gargoyles and the people of Britannia… Apart from that, I personally think that this is a quite decent game that has aged well enough to replay it nowadays. Not as good as Ultima IV or V, but still a good game.

Outside, a chill wind rises…but it’s quickly overtaken by a warm wind. You take comfort in this sudden heat until you smell something foul. Then you hear a booming voice from your open window. “Sorry. Totally me, dude. Might wanna turn on the biggest fan you have in your house.”

Another awesome review Spoony! I like how you clearly pointed out what you did and didn’t like about the game, rather than just put it in the ‘good’ or ‘suck’ category. That menu system does look like an absolute nightmare, and I never liked that darkness effect in games. I mean, it makes sense in dungeons, but I think it has really been overused.

I must confess, while I’m not usually disturbed by clowns, that jester freaked me out a bit. I’m curious if he ever does serve as a villain in the Ultima games, because I think he’d make a great one.

I have mixed feeling about the new intro. Noah does not look like Noah AT ALL in it. The artist seems good and all, but he evidently fails at “cartoonizing” people. None of the key features of Spoony’s face are present. Not one of them. I also dislike the new title card, and really think you should just keep the old one. It’s more stylized which is IMO a good thing. Good intro otherwise, and the review itself was great as always.

Well loved the review Spoony. Anyway I agree with the fog of darkness, it makes no sense to put it in a fully lighted castle much less a day scenario while exploring a nearby forest or attempting to find the next dungeon. I could understand dungeons and night scenarios, but its almost far-fetched and ridiculous to not be able to see 5 fucking feet in a fully lit castle, I might add. Anyway Good work Spoony, as usual keep up the good work.

I take issue with this review. Spoony, you basically bashed Ultima 6 for the same reasons you praised Ultimas 3-5. Don’t use the mouse! Everything is easier via keyboard commands, which work pretty much like the previous games. Visiting the shop to sell your 20+ spears, one at a time, is no more cumbersome in U6 than it was in U3 when EVERY character had his own inventory of keys, gems, torches, weapons, armor, food, and gold. After you get the hang of it, you could dump it all in seconds. Repetitive, sure, but not annoying. Besides, collecting crap off bodies and selling it is a stupid way to make money. Go to Destard and collect gold nuggets instead.

Junk items add to the realism of the game. You don’t need them, technically, but you can hold onto them for the role-playing aspect of it, which is kind of the point of the genre.

If there’s something on the bottom you need, you don’t have to pick up the stuff on top of it; just move it over (that’s what the move command is for).

If Lord British is sleeping, cast an Awaken spell. to wake him up. He won’t be mad, and he’ll heal you on the spot. Did you not try this?

It’s dark at night for a reason: Go to sleep! This also adds to the realness. Don’t keep playing the game just because your character doesn’t get tired. The game is trying to force limitations on you.

You’re trying to fight gargoyles on level 3. There’s your problem right there. Kill some headlesses and slimes and rats and mongbats for awhile, buy better weapons and armor and spells and reagents, level grind! Can’t believe you think you’re not expected to do this in an RPG.

Didn’t seem like you gave it a chance. You better not be this off on your U7 review (considered by many to be the best of the series).

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robert-Geiss/1199778554 Robert Geiss

he wasnt complaining that it was dark at night. he was complaining that even in well lit areas that its dark. which makes no sense!

Dude, you’re dumb. You said that the keyboard commands are “no more cumbersome in U6 than it was in U3.” That’s spoony’s point! It should have been fixed by now! “Junk items add to the realism of the game.” And? It’s still stupid! Besides, Spoony is complaining about the fact that you can’t pick up all 20 ish spears at the same time. That’s dumb too. Just move it over? Who cares! I want to pick it up at the same time! “Collecting crap off bodies is stupid.” THAT’S WHAT EVERY RPG EVER DOES! Besides, if in real life, it weren’t a crime to take stuff off dead people and I found a guy with a rolex, I’D TAKE IT! I want my money! “Go to Destard and collect nuggets?” If you’re saying this game is “realistic” why the hell is there a guy who gives away GOLD? WHY? That’s not realism! “You have to sleep, the game is imposing restrictions.” Why? I don’t have to sleep in Borderlands, or Fable, why do I have to now? I DON’T WANT TO! About the only valid point you made was that he was trying to fight gargoyles at level 3.
You’re defending a game by calling it crappy. That’s stupid. Think before you post! Please!

      Sincerely,
      The Stupidity Monitor

I have no idea what the hell you’re babbling about here, but I’ll give benefit of the doubt and pretend that somewhere within this incomprehensible mess is a discernible point. Unfortunately, it’s lost amidst a mass of aimless drivel and ITG bombast. Not to mention most of it is wrong.

Destard is a cave. If you’ve never played the Ultima games before, you really shouldn’t be this worked up over someone elses innocuous comments on an internet messageboard. I can’t bring myself to care about dissecting anything else you diarrhea’d.

Go find something constructive to do with your sugar rush.

Please!

Who cares!

  • https://openid.org/cgmascot Niko Mäkelä

Fun stuff. Thanks Spoony. While I had no problem with the many usability and other practical issues you list infesting the game, and I mean way back playing U6 at a time when many games had lots of these coming of age-issues, I enjoy your take on them for the comedy value.

Consider adding a few Ultima remakes on your to do-list – maybe Ultima 5 Lazarus and Ultima 6 Project, both doing wonders with old Dungeon Siege 1 engine. Both are very well rated, so I’d like ot see you rip into them. And yes they are free (but you need DS1 or DS1 Legends of Aranna) to run them.

The SNES version of Ultima 6 fixed a lot of the problems with inventory and size of your vision screen and all. The music was also more on track, but still somewhat repetitive. You still pretty much get stuck using The Light spell a lot, but that’s not a huge problem considering you started off with enough for ten uses. Also, to my knowledge, this is the only Ultima you can beat without fighting anyone or leveling up, if you know how to swipe the invisibility rings at the beginning, where to use them, how to get to the Gargoyle’s lands with the moon orb, and where to go with the vortex cube, ect.. Try doing that with Final Fantasy II/IV or Breath of Fire.

You know you bring up the thought that your reviews of the Ultima series are too informative and not full of humorous anger like your Final Fantasy reviews, and yet when I’m wandering around the Experiment website one thing I like to do is bring up one of your videos and just let it play in the background the same way someone turns on a movie just for some enjoyable background noise, and it’s your Ultima reviews that I usually turn to. I’ve watched each of these well over a dozen times, I’m sure. It’s just fun to hear about the games and to hear you talk about something you do enjoy without forcing humor when all you want to do is discuss the game itself. It jsut sucks that you’ve pretty much reviewed every game.

Ok Several problems with this review. First, you don’t have to pick everything up, you can use the move command to move it around, I actually like this ultima’s interface the best out of all of them, except for the half screen. I grew up playing a SNES port. Anyways, two, you didn’t play this game, it’s very clear, because the combat music wasn’t playing during you “liberating the shrine”. You gotta engage combat by hitting “b”. That’s also why your party didn’t fight with you. Bad review, but I loved the chuckles scene. You need to play this again. Another thing, the music only changes when you use a command. More proof you didn’t play the game. AND THAT’S NOT LORD BRITISH’S BEDROOM! IT’S YOURS!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Morales/1174429745 Christopher Morales

Okay, several problems with this comment.  First, you grew up playing an SNES port, so you should shut the fuck up about the “problems” with Spoony’s review of the PC version of the game.  Second, you should have said “second” instead of “two” in your list to be consistent in your terminology.  Third, grow the fuck up, you snide, lifeless piece of shit.  Go badger people on Youtube about bullshit no one but you cares about.  And you’re welcome for the free entertainment Spoony provides, you ungrateful twat.

      • http://twitter.com/disastertourism Chris Confer

        Christopher for the win.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_D7G6LFAY3NKX2KJTMZA2CPRENE Derek

Actually, I grew up playing the SNES version, but I later became so
obsessed with it I spent 80 dollars to buy the Ultima Collection off of
EBAY. So yeah. I’ve played both the PC and the SNES version. Also, if
you knew anything you’d realize that the PC has a half screen (I
mentioned this in the comment your replying to so eloquently) and clearly you haven’t
played this game either or you’d realize that. So why don’t you just
keep it to yourself if you don’t know what your talking about. I’d be
harsher, but that wouldn’t be very virtuous. So I’ll be “compassionate”
        and spare you my wrath.

And it’s not very nice to call people twats. Do you kiss your mother
with that mouth? I wonder how you’d act in real life. I sincerely doubt
you’d have the guts to use such coarse language to someones face. More
than likely because most people wouldn’t put up with that garbage for
more than five seconds before getting physical. But if it makes you feel
        better, by all means.

It doesn’t offend me in the slightest. Nor am I amused if it’s a lame attempt to troll.

      • http://www.facebook.com/eric.hall.54 Eric Hall

Why is Spoony’s fanbase mostly consist of psychopathic ignorant pieces of shit who attack people for the most minor of offenses? It’s not like he was insulting Spoony, he felt like he was correcting him. Don’t overreact so much.

    • http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

you are more than entitled to your opinion but I will stand by the other comment on how you played the port of this game, not the original version.  You can’t say he’s being incorrect about the system when you both played on completely different ones.  The SNES port wasn’t and isn’t like games today that are on both Xbox 360 and PS3, they tended to have glitches and poor functionality corrected.

  • http://twitter.com/LouisGonzales RockyBalboa211

Spoony has played every Ultima Game during the course of his life. I don’t fault him for using recent video that he found though. Also, he was probably just going by memory when discussing certain situations on this review. Overall, give Spoony the benefit of the doubt.

    • http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

Spoony has said that it’s difficult to get these games to actually run on modern systems and that was a big reason he used ‘found’ footage which he has done his best to credit so you are correct in that he has played them just can’t really play them now

      • Bill Cassinelli

Gog.com has them all up to the complete Ultima VII, which run fine under Windows 7, using Dosbox:
        http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/ultima_4_5_6

I think he said that it would just take too long for Spoony to have to play through them all again and then review them.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_D7G6LFAY3NKX2KJTMZA2CPRENE Derek

That’s actually only true for the 2nd and 3rd game in the series. Even with Dosbox they’re impossible to run the way they’re supposed to. But Pretty much every other ultima runs perfectly smoothly on dosbox. Although you really want to use exult for U7. There’s just no reason not to unless you’ve never played the original without it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Rosenbaum/100001387887487 George Rosenbaum

It explains why he was able to make these reviews so quickly, in relation to the FF games. I think he either plays the game himself, or he gets Sage to do it for him.

The most time consuming part of a video game review is getting the footage. Even just watching someone else’s footage (which is often streamlined for time) is going to take much longer than a 90 minute movie or a 30 page comic book.

        agreed

  • Bill Cassinelli

I have to agree that despite its great plot, Ultima VI is probably my least favorite of the whole series. It may be the game’s engine, which Origin spent a lot of money to develop. That reminds me, will you be reviewing the red-headed step children of Ultima VI, Martian Dreams and Savage Empire?

As for Chuckles’ Game – wasn’t that in Ultima VII? Still, cool to see a reference.

Loved the cameo by the Gatekeeper from the Nightmare board game (I still have mine with the VHS tape).

BTW, start a conversation with Iolo and say this to him: Spam Spam Spam Humbug.

Dude, the mug is there so that the world will be *realistic*. You can also carry a chair around if you like.

Try “moving” unneeded stuff around instead of picking it up.

Some people just don’t “get” Ultima.

    • Dominik81

Hey, sorry dude, now that I have watched more of your videos I realize that you obviously do “get” Ultima. It’s just that you do mock it alot lol.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_E67AFJJD24BH7AVTOIAFX5GWGQ Christopher

Yes, because there’s oh-so-much to “get” about useless items thrown into a game for no reason.  Sure, realism is all well and good, but if realism is what you want, then you wouldn’t be playing a fucking sword-and-sorcery RPG, would you?

      Retard.

      • Dominik81

It is up to the player to figure out which items are useless and which aren’t. Actually many items do have some non plot relevant use. The paradigm of Ultima has always been to create an interactive world (hence the motto of Origin “We create Worlds”…). Some players would spend hours decorating a house.

I realize my comment came out wrong. Spoony obviously hold Ultima in high regard. It is just that much of the criticism directed at later parts of the series seem to target exactly the aspects of the series that set it apart from other games. Such as that not everything is handed to you and not everything is plot-crucial or even useful at all from a hack-and-slay perspective.

As a player who started with part 6, I can now see how part 6 could be viewed as a step backward in contrast to part 5, in some sense.

    • RobinAdams78

I got the impression that the Codex is magical, and shows different things depending on who’s reading it. When a human reads it, it shows the best moral code for human society. When a gargoyle reads it, it gives the best moral code for a gargoyle society.

The stinger at the end is missing. The short scene where Chuckles gets the Yellow Lantern ring.

    • Hitokiri Akins

It was removed because Oreo ate the Chuckles costume, so Chuckles can’t return. No point in a stinger hinting at the return of a character that can’t return, right?

      • http://mara999.deviantart.com/ MaraBackman

Pity. I knew about Oreo eating the costume, but I quite liked the scene as well as the potential for Chuckles to give viewers nightmares. :/

        • Morgil27

Couldn’t he just make a new one? And how does a dog that little eat a full-size human costume?

          • http://mara999.deviantart.com/ MaraBackman

Yeah, I suppose. Chuckles could use a make-over if he’s become a Yellow Lantern. Also, I don’t think Spoony meant it literally, even though some dogs can rival goats in eating weird stuff.

          • Hitokiri Akins

Spoony also hated doing Chuckles, so Oreo eating the costume just gave him an excuse to NOT bring him back.
