The Spoony No-Prize Goes To…

The Spoony One | May 1 2009 | more notation(s) |

A fan wrote in with this link; thought you might enjoy it. Apparently someone managed to beat The Adventures of Bayou Billy in under 25 minutes without dying. According to the wunderkind in question, Tom ‘rdrunner’ Votava, “It’s important to get through the driving levels without dying so that you can carry over your weapon from Stage 3 to Stage 6. Having a weapon there works wonders!”

Oh, naturally. Silly me. I’ll get right on that.

Get Flash to see this player.

I salute you, sir!

Lies. He’s clearly some sort of android of cyborg programmed to do only one thing – play Bayou Billy. This man/machine hybrid has been playing the game since it’s release and has only now beaten it. It’s just that balls hard.

Yeah, the people at SDA do some crazy-ass shit. Watch the Fallout 3 run. It uses the shitty physics in the game to basically skip from leaving Vault 101 to heading to the final quest in the game. Think it was like under 40 minutes long. It’s butt-ass boring but from a technical standpoint it’s fuckin’ hilarious.

When I was a kid my parents had this attitude “You better beat this game or I’ll beat your ass” before I get you a new one. I swear to God I had to beat and damn near master any game I had before I even got a new one. Probably the reason why I beat every game I own, or atleast mastered that bitch to the last boss of the game (fuck you ThunderBird from Adventures of Link). I mean I only got a few games a year and you can bet that I played the pure shit out of them. Thank God! I never asked for Bayou Billy… I probably would have never had owned another game after that. My most difficult game to beat was Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles yes the original one! the one that’s mission impossible to beat. I was 7 years old and Home from school for a week with the Flu and so God help me I actually beat that game.

Just checked Spoony’s vid again and he did’nt mention it but…does anyone else think the game designers were being a little optimistic with regards to the maximum speed of a jeep??? I mean…180 MPH!!!!!????? Does Mr Big keep all his jeeps tricked out with twin-turbos and nitrous as well as the hood mounted shotguns and ready supply of hand grenades???

I think this should be a new segment on here. The Spoony No Awards. Kinda like acheivements you get for some games on Xbox. This could be a funny (or maybe just to me) thing to do. Someone does something soo odd and sends it in. Just an idea.

WHAT, Aonther blog post? When are ya gonna post new videos Noah? This is so lame!!!

Ha, Just kidding. Honestly I’d much rather wait the extra time for a video that is good, fully edited, and complete, then a video that was rushed and left unfinised because a few jackasses were irritating you over it. I’m pretty sure most of the other people who frequent this site feel the same way. So take your time, and finish stuff when you can. The people who bitch and moan need to find something more constuctive to do with their time.

Actually this isn’t that big of a deal, as it’s recorded with extreme slowdown and savestates which means probabily anyone on here could do it with practise. The hard part is actually optimising the gameplay to the max. Certain Speedruns or TASes can take up to 2 years to complete due to working out which button presses are faster and what things cause frame lag. It’s still rather an impressive run nonetheless.

Y’know, even though he did beat it (believe me, it’s more than I’ll ever do) it still wasn’t that easy. You still have to beat down the helicopter – “war of attrition”, as Spoony says. You still have to have a weapon pretty much 100% of the time as it’s really the only way to effectively fight anyone, and even so, if you’ve got the stick then some of the enemies can STILL hit you if you can hit them.

And here’s something else: why do you have to fight the Double Dragon Twins AFTER you beat down the Fat Man? Isn’t fatty their boss? If they beat down Billy who’s gonna pay ‘em? It’s not like they can’t just let Billy go get his woman and then loot tubbo’s house. Y’know? Steal one of those Apache attack choppers. And really, if the Fat Man can afford a fleet of choppers then wouldn’t that money be better spent hiring one sniper to put one in Billy’s dome from half a mile away?

Dammit. See what going to this site so often has done to me? Now I’m starting to think like Spoony.

The credits explain that the twins were the heirs to the Fatman’s empire, SpitefulCrow. They were apparently stupid enough to try for it while Billy was still in the room.

But yeah…I wonder how many times this guy had to play this to get this run…probably months. And like five months from now, someone else will come in with a time thirty seconds faster and take this guy’s record.

Wow! After seeing Spoony’s review of it way back when, I thought it was an impossible game to win, especially with the enemies who apparently ignore bullets (Although I suppose that might have been bulletproof vests, I’ve never played the game myself).

Kudos to rdrunner for that, it was down right impressive!

Wrong and wrong. SDA only accepts runs that are not tool assisted and are recorded from the actual console. And, really, if you watched even a small chunk of the video it’s pretty obvious that it isn’t just a screencap. There is some very obvious jitter in there that wouldn’t be present when running on an emulator.

Also, ROMs are not slightly different than the original. A ROM dump is an exact dump of the code on the cartridge. The only time there are differences between real console play and emulated play is when there is a bug in the emulator.
