Well played, aliens…well played…

The Spoony One | Jul 11 2010 | more notation(s) |

Yeah, I know the frame rate sucks. Sorry. I’m working on improving that. Anyway, the aliens are cheating, grenade-chucking whores.

    Spoony got pawned!

The live feed was better…Spoony cackling like a maniac for almost a minute straight. His laugh rivaled any Joker in history.

    • Anonymous

Funny you mention that, because when I heard him laugh during his Spooning with Spoony 2 commentary, the first thing that went through my mind was that he sounded like Nicholson’s Joker when he sees himself in the mirror for the first time.

  • mrrubino

5 seconds ago, this was clearly a gif, and now it is a video with commentary. Did you realize we all didn't have a clue, Mr. Spoon?

  • http://twitter.com/TrenWolfman Tom-Erik Enger

These underwater aliens aren't fucking around.

  • http://twitter.com/aviankramer Bill Leavenworth

What? He streamed this live earlier today. The video was just as bad then.

  • dragonkiller48

Probably the funniest moment of X-Com 2… so far…

  • Lowcifur

So that's what X-Com would be like if Spoony was the DM.

  • koldstare

    Flying-goat much?

  • Trienco

Now that is a familiar sight. A friend of mine would spend ages on his first turn, neatly positioning all his troops in a half circle around the ship to “cover in all directions”. More often than not a grenade came sailing out of nowhere (or even those annoying remote controlled thingies) and wipe out most or all of his team.

Lesson to be learned for this game: always spread out. There's always some damn alien with a spare grenade just waiting for moments like this. If need be, don't unload all troops in the first turn.

This and Jagged Alliance will always rule my list of turn based tactic games. Even if they can be tough and frustrating and make you reload the same save game a hundred times (useless fact of the day: JA2 saved the pregenerated random numbers in the save game, so you couldn't cheat by reloading and shooting until you hit).

  • jewbagel

This was one of the most glorious fails I've ever seen.

  • satansbestbuddy

    What's this, a stream capture?

    …you a have stream?

  • http://twitter.com/Emptysquare Mitchell McIntyre

This is why you don't fuck with aliens…

  • johnnyfog

I love how spoony's laugh mingled with a whimper and then died.

  • Renaissance_nerd

this is why soldiers have formations. SO one grenade doesn't make all of them go boom. Your knowledge of proper formations is disappointing me Spoony. :P

but what an awesome epic fail.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rodrigo.ibarra3 Rodrigo Ibarra

WTF!??!?!?!?! That was like a Dr. Insano Conquer the world laugh… That was maniacally funny…
Fuck. I think that it was epic fail.

  • Lockgar

    Doctor Insano laugh?

Yeah, the computer is a cheating bastard in earlier games, I still love xcom though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lex-Agan/1500313719 Lex Agan

Terror from the Deep summed up in one video. Something from Somewhere kills all your dudes in one shot. Please try again.

At least there was no Chryssalids.

  • jewbagel

He's been doing some streaming for a week or so, check his twitter and you'll see some links. It's all recorded so if anyone wanted to watch the X-COM vids they are there.

  • http://twitter.com/Eniacc Eniac

Just put “IT'S ALIIIIVE” before the laugh, and picture Dr. Insano xD

  • lefiath

Oh, that laugh… I'm scared now.

  • JeanJacket

Channeling a bit of Insano there? LOL. (Fight it, Spoony! You left the madness behind a long time ago!)

I hate it when computers cheat.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Jochl/100000719748158 Max Jöchl

Ah yes, Terror from the Deep, perhaps the most sadistically hard squad-based strategy game ever.

At the beginning of the game, a lowly Sonic Pistol will invariably kill your unarmored soldiers in 1 hit. Once you've discovered Plastic Aqua armor, you'll be able to survive a frontal hit, where the armor is thickest – everything else is very likely to be instant death, and at that point in the game, the aliens are already going to complement their arsenal with Sonic Blasta Rifles or even Sonic Cannons.

But explosives take the cake. Not only can the normal alien Sonic Pulser grenade cover the whole screen with just as much damage as a Sonic Cannon, but near the end of the game, the aliens will be fielding Disruptor Pulse launchers, remote-controlled missiles capable of obliterating the whole screen doing almost twice as much damage, leveling buildings and instantly killing even your most experienced soldiers in your most advanced armor.

  • The_Illusionist

“The aliens are cheating, grenade-chucking whores.”

Man, I read that and thought the NCCA Football game advertised before the video was going to be AWESOME. Return-of-Mutant-League-Football awesome. =P Still, X-Com is good too. And to be fair, that's pretty tame compared to some of the things that game'll do to ya…..

  • lamg

funny that i warned him to spread more… right before that happaned, and i did´t expect that to happen on TURN 1

  • Ceherz

does that mean we'll see a LETS PLAY of XComTFTD soon? :D. oh and btw, these under water missions are NOTHING compared to terror attacks on ships. the horror the horror…

  • http://twitter.com/Kosomjet Chris Fitzgerald

You know, the first time I was on ship mission, I was doing pretty okay, there were dinosaurs, Tasoth, floating brains and flying squid, plus the odd MC'ing Aquatoid or two. But I managed to clear the deck with minimal losses. Yay, I win? Right? Right? No. I have to clear below decks too, oh joy. And not only that, but once you get down there, you've almost no cover bar a few crates, with the aliens already set up in choice defensive positions.

I've often wondered, if the aliens have on a ship, what amounts to a platoon, wouldn't the more sensible thing to do would be to blow the ship out of the water? I mean…of course, try and rescue the crew, but, make it quick and get out as fast as you can.

  • http://twitter.com/Kosomjet Chris Fitzgerald

Well, TFTD version of the Cyrssalid is the Tentaculat. Basically the same, only confined to water levels and spawns new Tentaculats instead of Cyrssalids.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Oliver-Meyer/1288596186 Oliver Meyer

    Laugh it up, fuzzball!

Seriously, though, that was the most hysterical laughter I've heard in a long, long time. And it made me laugh, too. XD

  • Salenstormwing

The alien was obviously camping the spawn! And it's not a legitimate strategy when your grenade has a blast radius the size of the entire spawn area and it's general surroundings.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Newbonzy?feature=mhw4 Newbonzy

They all died – BOOM! well, I couldn't tell what just happened, but this has to bee the biggest crack up since Zelda Scott.

  • Akuosa

Ey, at least he is clearly taking it pretty well…

  • http://www.myspace.com/givenwillingly GivenWillingly

Hmm… I never played Terror From The Deep but I sure hate Plasma Grenades in UFO. It's strange how a game which is based so extremely on trial and error can be so much fun.

  • http://pkht.org Jim Boom

Ah, should have been there at Lordkat's stream to see the .gif of the above. I gotta play this game to see if something as epic will happen to me, heh.

  • http://twitter.com/Casseopedia Casseopedia

Right before the grenade blows, we need to cue a Dr. Insano, “This is the precise moment when Spoony's soul snaps like a Twix Bar.” :P

  • Tokolosh

Glad to know I'm not the only one who laughs insanely when his guys die. :)

    X-Com rules.

Aquatoids are just really good at Blitzball.

  • Ustramage

    That was great!!

Way back in the day, i was playing X-Com UFO Def and i had a rocket launcher guy step out, get shot by snap fire, freak out, turn around and fire! Whole team wiped out before i could even react!

  • kikyoo

    Wow that was funny
X-com is a bitch like that, but ya just keep comein' back for more cause honestly what other turn based strategy rpgs are out there?

Epic tho spoony. Maybe this vid will keep my friends from playing X-com… hrm… maybe i shouldn't show it to them then.

  • http://twitter.com/KaiLeingod John Spearing

    lmao

  • allessander

Terror from the Deep let's play NAO!

  • Iaro

I had looked away at that moment when the aliens blew up the base- I was so confused!

  • Ceherz

that's what i'm saying :D. i used to be a “cheater” and immediately saved after every succesful move. and loaded my saved game after every not so succesful move :D

  • TheMICu

That's how commander Spoony Fights aliens!

Learn to use Dye granate and dont poop whole squad at once btw =|

  • Tmpp

God damn sir, that 's a fine Mad Villain laugh you have there!

  • Kevin_Holsinger

Good afternoon, Spoony and fellow Spooners.

A question unrelated to the subject at hand: are we not supposed to put links in our comments if we want them posted here? I put one in a Twilight comment after Spoony's review, was told the comment would have to be approved by a moderator, and that was the last I ever saw of it. I don't recall pissing anybody off here, so it's not likely that I'm on some list of Spoony-trolls. So I have to assume it's the link.

My thanks in advance if anybody knows how things work here.

  • Destoroyaaaaaaaaah

Can you hear that? Its the sound of a Lets play X-com!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Ross/1373469994 Matt Ross

Are you using UFO Extender? That or XcomUtil (I prefer Extender) will fix 99% of the problems with running X-Com, as well as the awful bugs ingame.

  • GunsmithKitten

I've always deployed smoke/dye at the breach also, but it only seems to help with direct fire. Trust me, if the aliens get it in their mind to chuck a grenade, a little smoke ain't gonna deter them.

  • batlashes

THIS is the game you want us to try, Spoony? xD

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Konstantin-Akhmetov/100000303416185 Konstantin Akhmetov

“At least there was no Chryssalids” – aha, at least in UFO Defence you would hover and they wouldn't get you. Tentaculats on the other hand will reach you anywhere AND they look like something Lovecraftian – frak, it's even written in their UFOPaedia description… and the end boss even LOOKS like Cthulhu himself!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elio-Lopes-Ribeiro/1492315337 Élio Lopes Ribeiro

    What a hell just happened?!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/EZF6N54F2TAM4PCWF3VUCSSYWQ Googleshng

Ah, X-Com 2. The early game is so much harder than the original, half your weapons stop working in early terror missions, and the whole aliens invaded the earth billions of years ago but have been hibernating at the bottom of the ocean bit is weird and smacks of the Silurians from Doctor Who. It's all worth it though when you start chasing lobstermen around with giant freaking drills…

… up until you start hitting those freaking ship missions. Seriously that's just too much combat to handle without a break if it isn't the end game.

  • draxo

    Hell yes! Spoony playing X-Com!

I started a new game recently too, lost most my squad o the first terror site. Dang Cyberdiscs.

Anyway, go Spoony! This has happened to me more than once myself :D

  • draxo

Squad exits the sub, only to have a sonic grenade gib the entire squad right outside the doors.

Also, the reason I exit the subs 2-3 men at a time.

  • http://www.google.com/profiles/114319313498601954245 Kaltzor

Fair play 101: Blow the f*** out the enemy team in 1 turn.

Oh snap. I think we broke Noah. I guess its been inevitable a while now though

  • http://www.facebook.com/thecrazyguy Sean Thomas Gill

Me too! I had to rewind halfway through Spoony's maniacal cackle!

  • http://www.facebook.com/thecrazyguy Sean Thomas Gill

Even nowadays, “impressive” AI means they f***ing cheat! “Why won't the {insert character type here} die!? This is such {Expletive deleted}!”

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/EJ2J6S4BVB6YSEXQR7LV4GIICU Nathen W

No, this was just part of his live stream yesterday morning. He played X-Com and X-Com 2 on live stream last week and yesterday.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/EJ2J6S4BVB6YSEXQR7LV4GIICU Nathen W

That is just playing smart… When the original first came out, everyone I knew played like this unless they intentionally set out to play without saves. It was far more common to save after each turn.

  • Ceherz

yea well since the game allows you to do so it's not cheating i guess… but sometimes i feel dirty for doing it when i have to try out 10 different moves until one round is succesful ;-)

  • http://twitter.com/V8_Ninja V8 Ninja

    Wow. That's…hilarious! =D

  • IrkenTrad

Those evil, evil Lobster Men! That was horrible!! XD
    Thanks for sharing, Spoony.

  • http://www.myspace.com/givenwillingly GivenWillingly

BTW Am I the only one who can't stand to have even just one guy of my team die unless it's extremely heroic?
You know… the opposite of what just happened in that video?

  • GunsmithKitten

Ugh, poking around every stinking cubby hole of those ships….grating….

  • sifer2

If you didn't reload after that catastrophe your a true Ironman! lol

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/EJ2J6S4BVB6YSEXQR7LV4GIICU Nathen W

Back in the day I used to save and reload when my characters died… That was pretty much the way everyone I knew played unless they set out to play a full game with death rules (no turn relaods)

  • Altoman5

Terror From the Deep. I knew exactly what would happen especially in a squad formation like that. That was pretty funny to watch but a pain in the ass to play. I would play it like Ironman style at first, but when I lose so many people, I end up cheating. Not so in the first Xcom game.

There are moments when I play the game when I throw a sonic grenade at an area where I know there's an alien, but ended up killing 5 or 6 aliens bunch up together. That was crazy!

  • http://twitter.com/hellomayo Adelyn

I don't know what was better: What had happened or your most evil laughing there. :D

  • http://twitter.com/Mohia_Keria Mohia Keria

From swat 4 to x-com, you have no luck with grenades.

  • http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

so apparently the aliens throw better than Reynolds does?
