Can Sage and Spoony survive Garzey’s Wing, often regarded as the worst anime of all time?
You and Sage are really funny together. Oh, and I’ve seen a lot of that anime… words can not really describe how bad it is.
Spoony, are you a secret anime fan? O_O
He seems to know what Monster is. Dunno how much that counts for, though.
He gets pissed when people call Alucard, Arucard. So yeah, he’s a closeted otaku, I just think he hates the more…Japanese works out there, i.e. Lucky Star, Evangelion, though he did like Katamari Damacy, not an anime but still pretty fucking weird…
Oh sweet baby jesus! I think my brain just exploded from those horrible voices. And that is why I watch anime with the original Japanese and subtitles.
Good job Spoony. And as an old-school anime fan I have this to say. I believe that Falan Fa was voiced by Roxanne Beck. I’ll buy the shells if you get the shotgun.
Wait, so this is Aura Battler Dunbine – an 80’s giant robot show that never came to the West – w/o Aura Battlers? And THEN it has no actual plot of which to speak of with bad voice acting to boot? Actually made it over when the TV series that inspired it didn’t?
I’d be shocked, but then I once waited till 3am in a Berkeley theater to hear Captain Harlock as voiced by John Wayne.
Half right, Aura Battler Dunbine is a sequel/prequel/spinoff series.
Half right, Garzey’s Wing is a sequel/prequel/spinoff series. Aura Battler Dunbine = 1983 Garzey’s Wing = 1996
Ed as Lars is awesome.
You know, Garzey’s wing is definetly one of the most confusing anime ever made (Sage never brought up the trampolines or the fact that everything is solved by shoving shit on arrows but the worst? No, I’d have to strongly disagree…actually I don’t know too many who would consider GW the worst. Now MD Geist 1+2, Wrath of the Ninja, Divergence Eve plus Misaki Chronicles, Dragonaut, those are all worse in their own way an those are just ones I have seen.
Wasn’t a bad review, (once again seeing Ed even in a small role is always awesome and you brought up good points) but The show girls of anime this show is not…that would probably be MD Geist since more people have heard about that one and it is universally panned or seen as a genius trolling…While GW has some fans of the soundtrack
That was really great! Well Done Sage, Spoony and Ed/Lars!
Love the Skywalker “It’s impossible” :P Great work Spoony and Sage!
I have never heard of this anime, and I am now glad. I shall never force myself through this. In the words of Linkara, I refuse to subject myself to this much concentrated stupid
Oh dear Monkey-Christ…I’m only 5:50 into this video, I just saw “The Phantom Goose”, or at least that’s what I’m calling it, and…I’m trying to drink coffee right now, I can’t. I just can’t. Partly because I just don’t feel any joy in life right now to enjoy a simple cup of coffee (honestly, WHAT did I just see?!), but also because I’m laughing at Spoony’s aneurysm and also because I’m shaking in fear of how bad this is gonna be. 6 minutes in, 80% of that sketch time in the opening. And already I need a break. Well, Sage warned us. Okay. Gonna try this again. It’s a good thing you guys turn crap into comedic gold, or I’d be terrified to hit the “Play” Button again (though I am nervous…)
30 seconds later: ….There is so much evil in this world. Okay, enough “live” posting, I’m just gonna watch the rest now. Oi, watching this is reminding me why I gave up Anime 6 years ago in favor of stuff like Venture Brothers. I’m having a “Manos Effect” right now: If I didn’t have a team of wonderful goobers poking fun at the horrible movie, I’d set myself on fire to escape it!
Okay, finally finished it. Never before in my life, was I so EAGER to see something ripped in half from crotch to clavicle and I felt horrible when I was denied (and strangely felt no moral issue for wanting to witness such a thing to begin with. Bad Voice acting is my number 1 animation & gaming pet peeve. I encourage harsh punishment).
That was honestly like…Jar Jar Binks, staple-gunned to Snarf, tied up in barbed wire to Tidus, and duct taped to the Warner Brothers Red Riding Hood (HEY GRAMMAH!), locked in a bank vault filled with time bombs and other explosives, with the counter is going down, 5…4…3…2…1…….ONLY to find that it’s a dud and everyone gets out safe and sound (plus a few staples). Japan owes me a Dead Pixie.
But aside from that, this was fun to watch! And what’s strange, just today, for seemingly no reason, I started thinking of that wonderful bathroom attendant from the previous spoony/sage crossover, and just tonight, boom, this video is up! Timing! I’m just gonna enjoy the rest of my Coffee now. No way am I sleeping any time soon with that abomination fresh in my head.
“You sure look good for someone preparing for an exam!”
“You certainly got sexy!”
Okay, I am totally trying that pickup line.
I’m not sure which is sadder, the fact I recognized the clips early in the video were from Angel Cop and Madbull 34(which hasn’t been re-released on dvd as of yet), or the fact I’ve probably seen worse slock then Garzey’s wing in the 15+ years of anime viewing I’ve done..
Was that.. Zordon at like, 6:00 while he was falling?
Thats what I thought when I heard the voice to.
I love watching your acting getting better in each review
The concept of a guy being in 2 different worlds at the same time and one of them helping the other one out with gunpowder recepies and such is actually pretty cool, to bad the whriter of this thing had no idea how to use that concept (the goose scene, seriously).
Everything about this is just horribly misshandled on every level by the creators, exept the voices, as that was the dubbers fault.
Actually this is a perfect example of why I always watch foreign movies in their original language (that and the fact that I grew up with subtitles on every TV show i ever saw, as we don’t dub anything here in Sweden exept kid shows for 5 year olds).
Love your sketch in the opening, especially the part where sage says that Lars is there, Lars is awsome!
Btw Spoony, if you say you don’t like good anime, you have not yet seen good anime.
There are plenty of really good animes (amongst both those with fantastic elements and those that are realistic) of enough variety for there to be something to find for anyone.
I also know you are the kind of person who likes to analyse a movies visuals and other aspects Spoony (lke you did in your Inception review), and anime tends to use it’s visuals to tell a story as much as they use the dialog, there are even a few that have almost no exposition and rely more on subtle hints to tell the main story.
One series in particular i think you would enjoy is Kara no Kyoukai, it’s a series of 7 (i think) OVAs and the story is told unchronologically.
One episode in particular is a bloody masterpiece of storytelling in unchronological order and there are loads of subtle hints everywhear that may take a while to find.
The music is fantastic and the visuals are great and even stunning at times.
There are a few confusing elements but they do get explained as the story goes on, you just gotta think a little (and I like a movie that makes me think).
Give it a chance and see if you like it.
I want to like your comment but you called Yoshiyuki Tomino a bad writer T_T
I didn’t call him a bad writer, I just called this particular anime badly written (I call it as I see it).
I don’t know who Yoshiyuki Tomino is and have never seen any of his other works, so it’s hard for me to have an opinion on the guy.
he wrote the original 1979 Gundam series, as well as it’s sequels. The original Gundam was the first “real robot” series (robots used in a war drama scenario and setting). As well he wrote Ideon which was the primary inspiration for the highly overrated Evangelion, he wrote Dunbine which was a major inspiration for Escaflowne. He is quite a talented writer, no doubt but this was just awful. Idk if I would call it the worst though. Nadesico: Prince of Darkness was pretty fucking bad.
Sage looks like Tony Almeida :o
whoever voiced the man guy has moments where he sounds like he’s having fun with the script. The pool scene comes to mind with that.
Good review, but this second guy sucks. Couldn’t be less photogenic and more uptight.
You messing with The SAGE!?
The Sage is awesome. Go listen to him read My Immortal, it’s the funniest thing in the entire world. I’m really hoping that they turn that fanfic into a movie and that they get The Sage to be it’s narrator… best movie ever!
No offense to Sage, but it’s pretty obvious who edited this review. No “I have the power!” or Tidus laughing jokes? Sorry Sage, you’re a good skit actor, but everything else about your reviews needs work.
Not sure what you mean, I’m pretty sure Sage wrote most of this, and it was overall a very hilarious review! I couldn’t help but picture this fairy, navi, and sprite (The Navi of the Zelda Cartoons) all being horribly killed = ]
Oh no! A review using Sage’s style and subject matter isn’t loaded with Spoony’s running gags? Truly this work is an abomination.
Seriously though, your complaint basically reads “This isn’t a Spoony review, so it sucks”
Is that pixy Sailor Moon?
You don’t really know what you’re talking about, do you?
You think THIS is bad? Go to Youtube and search for “Mars of destruction”. Do it. I dare you.
I’m not sure words can be uttered to comment on this.
I often complain how italian dubbers from a certain TV network that happen to do all anime dubbing since ten years are there just because they slept with someone important, but… They’re angels sent from heaven compared to this. Same goes for the translation, I though the adaptation of those popular Shonen Jump flicks you see on TV were terribad, but they’re a one-of-a-kind masterpieces compared to this.
How can you screw up evil soldiers riding on armoured dinosaurs going against slave rebels with bombs?
I thought only immature and overrated crap was the only thing that hit TV when speaking of anime in my country, but it seems you had it worse, I’m so sorry, I won’t complain ever again. Mostly because I kind of stopped watching TV, especially for anime.
This movie could have been epic, if only Ben Stein had done all the voices.
Two words, Gundoh Musashi
Funny thing is, just before i watched this i just watched the 3rd episode of Cybercity which was shown. lol…. wait…… this aint a good thing right?
Cybercity Odeo 808 isn’t terrible. Good action, hilariously inept yet acceptable scripting, good pacing. If you were going to showcase terrible early distributed anime you could do much worse.
oh good, i feel much better with my choice of anime now :), thanks!, If your into anime i recommend TriGun and Area 88, Both are a good watch.
Thanks, I’ve seen both of those before though. Good choices though. Also check out either the original Area 88 OVA or the later series (whichever you may not have seen, if you haven’t seen both). Cheers.
Normally I love Spoony’s shows but the crossovers with Sage are not very good in comparison. I did not find the ‘Lars, official ass-wiper’ gag funny and here it goes to new levels of gross. It comes across like Spoony is some closet homosexual who desperately needs his ass fingered. It also does not make sense that this somehow behooves Spoony to review the anime with Skitch. I just don’t get it.
The rest of the jokes are entirely forgettable. This episode was better, though, if only because it had a better production behind it. Maybe ‘Spoony and Bennet Review Crappy Anime #3′ will be better – but just drop the ass-wiping gag.
that fucking pixie is sooo annoying i would hire BOTH the Red and Blu teams from Team Fortress 2 to cap her
I thought you were gonna say RvB from Rooster Teeth :)
Heh. Church can’t even hit normal-sized humans, much less a three-inch target like that.
That’s why you have Church possess that pixie. That way, she can’t try to escape.
Hilarious review, although there were one or two points that felt like they were trying too hard to be funny. Also, I can agree with many of the reasons for this series to be bad, but I can’t really take some of you two’s points as seriously as I would others since neither of you seem to like anime anyway.
Ohhh no Spoony. Glass Fleet is far worse than this, if only because its almost 10 times longer >_>
It really is a shame that the best anime is some of the most obscure, and more a shame because if Spoony ever found an anime he liked, he wouldn’t rant on it! T_T But for anyone who desperately needs to cleanse the palette of this monstrosity, I recommend a hearty dose of Samurai Champloo and Darker Than Black – you know, the dubs which aren’t complete crap.
Hell yeah, Darker Than Black! But Spoony would probably just mock it by calling it X-Men with OCD.
“if he found an anime he liked, he probably wouldn’t rant about it”
to tell you the truth…yeah i bet he totally would. He can bitch about anything. He could bitch about the miracles of the sunrise and singing bluebirds. he could bitch about world peace. he could have tantric sex with megan fox for 6 straight days and i’d bet you anything all he’d do is complain about the scratches on his back.
Like the great white shark, if spoony stops bitching, for even a second, he will literally die.
This one makes me laugh just because I used to know a guy who had a TON of shitty animes just like this. Seems like something he’d love.
-Oh hey, you’re wearing The Jacket! And Lars has an actual uniform this time!
-Oh shit. I remember reading about this. It used to be on the TV Tropes’ So Bad It’s Horrible page, though I just looked it up and it isn’t there anymore. I want to know who looked at that page and went, “Wait, why’s Garzey’s Wing on here? That wasn’t actually that bad!” and removed it. I’d like words with him.
-“I intentionally fell off to protect the horse’s feelings.” Really? REALLY.
I gotta hand it to you guys, at first it was kind of a pain to sit through this waste of ink, but you guys managed to pick out the best moments and make it funny.
I didn’t think we would get a follow up to Space Thunder Kids, either. Is this going to be a yearly event, or do you draw the line at THREE shitty anime things?
Why? Why are the bows backwards? This is what happens when crappy anime writers try to do a re-imagining of Army of Darkness. Also, Spoony, you should do a horrible laugh-off between these chucklefucks and Meg Ryan, er, Tidus.
“What’s Garsys Wing”?
Noah sounds like Stuart from Mad TV :D :D
Aw… It’s sad Spoony doesn’t like anime.
Anime (and manga of course which is where many of them begin) is one of the most creative industries there is. Sometimes… too creative for their own good which leads to them ruining the awesome they just made.
You have to admit, the idea of a man being in two worlds simultaneously and being able to communicate with his other half is a pretty cool idea.
This is just a case of shitty dubbing (which is unfortunate considering English dub companies have been good for a LONG time), a low budget and the creators not knowing what the hell they’re doing.
There is a lot of shitty anime, but far more in the way good anime. I’d love to recommend some but wouldn’t know where to start.
Full Metal Alchemist is always fool-proof in it’s brilliance for anime virgins, everyone should at least watch that before dying.
Of course the reason he claims to “hate” anime instead of just “not like” it is probably the fanboys telling him to watch this anime and that anime. :P
Well that’s a HORRIBLE reason :P
Spoony is someone we come to to partly see something we haven’t seen before, and he recommends a great deal. Why can’t he have the same appreciation for what the fans have to show him?
It’s just childish to hate something for that reason alone.
He doesn’t have to watch what we recommend as it’s his life of course, but he doesn’t have to tell us what we like sucks in his mind :(
“he doesn’t have to tell us what we like sucks in his mind :(”
The problem with anime fans that doesn’t seem to tread into other fandom is that so many people who like anime will take it as a personal affront when someone else tells them that anime sucks, or worse, that their /favorite/ anime sucks. If someone reviews an anime and is able to give constructive criticism, the best thing a fan could do is address the argument. If someone makes an off-hand comment, you need to treat it like an off-hand comment. Making recommendations is fine, but I think most of the anime fandom tends to forget the other person has to have a similar interest, or it just isn’t their taste. Anime and manga is for a totally different culture, so unless you are really into how it looks or other almost irrelevant things, you don’t necessarily have to and may fail to appreciate what it’s about. For example, if Spoony liked Japanese folklore, you could recommend something like Aoi Bungaku. Even if he found flaws in execution, he related to the content.
He doesn’t like anime, but that doesn’t extend to anime fans. They’re awesome. This is America after all; anime fans may be his fans, who like different things. We all have to tolerate each other and our freedoms.
Hardcore otaku are amongst the most zealous of fanboys/fangirls. If you say “I don’t really like anime”, chances are you will get at least 30 of them telling you that you “just aren’t looking hard enough!” or that you are “closed minded to other cultures!” or a thousand and one excuses about why you need to kneel down and kiss the ass of this particular genre.of film.
It’s always the same thing “Beserk will change your mind! It’s deep!” (Yeah…no it isnt. Pointless violence, misogyny and nihilism do not a good story make) or “Evangelion, dude!” (A cut and paste mecha anime with random imagery put in a vain attempt to obscure the fact that the story is nothing special) and so on…
I watch anime, and I like some of it. But I would never bludgeon someone over the head if they don’t. I don’t throw a fit when people don’t like tabletop RPGs, so I don’t see why so many fans commenting here are such fanatics.
It’s not the fact the fans want to recommend stuff to him. It’s the fact that he has made it clear that he’s seen much of it, and it’s not his cup of tea and yet people are still telling him that he “doesn’t get it” or that he needs to “keep looking”.
I don’t like Brandy. I’ve tried it many times over the years and it just isn’t my thing. Forcing me to drink Brandy or shoving bottles in my face is not going to improve my view of the substance , in fact it makes me think less of it.
Fact: as of this moment he doesn’t like your hobby as much as you do. It’s just not his cup of tea. Trying to push it on him doesn’t make it better (especially since alot of fans are recommending stuff that he’s already seen and already doesn’t like, thus insulting his intelligence when they tell him to just look again because he didn’t “get it” and he’ll agree with them. It’s patronizing. That may not have been their intent, but that’s how it comes across)
Fact 2: The vast majority of anime (indeed the vast majority of film) is mass marketed, uninspired crap. Very few rise to a standard that is attractive to an outsider (hence why classics like “Grave of the Fireflies” are so well regarded). I like anime, but there are few that I would actually call “good” and even fewer that I would call “brilliant”. So him being wary is not out of line.
The key is to let him have his opinion, respect that he has very good reasons for not being into your fandom and when he asks for suggestions, respectfully offer your opinion and insight.
Anything else is sheer fanwankery and does not help your cause.
Not all early anime imports are unbearable. Some of them can be kind of fun, in that badly-dubbed kung-fu sort of way. I actually did like Cyber City Oedo…
Garzey’s Wing, though….Wow. Just…wow. I can’t express how much horror I felt on witnessing this review…and it wasn’t even the whole thing. I’m pretty sure the full series would break me. Thanks for braving it for us, guys. We salute you.
Ah the bad old days of early importing. The saturation is horrible today, but at least there’s better chances of getting a good translation.
Seriously, I’ve done fan dubs just for yuks, and intentionally camped up a few translations. The dubs I did as part of an AV group in community college for Bubblegum Crisis were floor rollingly bad. Yet nothing me and my fellow miscreant geeks did even comes CLOSE to this.
I already saw this on TGWTG.com but I’ll probably watch it again later. Sage seems to be into alot of old school anime huh? This anime is like Escaflowne.. only dumber and even more confusing. I think “Was that so stupid that it brought me back to life?” is my new favorite gag.
The Fox Dub of Vision of Escaflowne was really bad. Fox tried to make Vaughn the main character. (Hitomi is actually the main character.) Fox also cut out a MASSIVE amount of violence and messed with the order of events to make Escaflowne a purely shonen (boys) anime for Saturday mornings.
The uncut Dub of Vision of Escaflowne is actually pretty good. It also has a broad appeal to both giant mecha action loving guys and romance/bishonen loving girls. There’s a well thought out plot with some impressive and genuinely unexpected twists. Plus, it’s soundtrack alone is worth at least a +1 to it’s score on any rating system. The music is just amazing.
And it spawned the utterly hilarious Vision of Escaflowne Abridged by HBI2K. (It’s on youtube.)
But Garzey’s Wing shouldn’t even be in the same post as anything considered good. It looks like it was bad even in the original japanese release.
Dude I’ve seen Escaflowne uncut. Though I was thinking more of the movie where Van grows wings for no apparent reason.
Van is able to grow wings when he wants because he’s a Draconian (ancient extinct angel-like race), it’s something he has to keep secret because they are feared and thought to be cursed.
His wings are significant on multiple levels but he grows them usually to save someone’s ass.
Escaflowne is an awesome anime dude, you just need to watch all of it :P
True, but the movie never makes any of that clear. The movie also never clarifies Folken’s motivations. But even the Escaflowne movie blows the DVD case off of the garbage known as Garzey’s Wing.
Although if you want really good anime, you have to go for things like Trigun, Outlaw Star, Full Metal Panic, Gurren Lagann and Full Metal Alchemist (and FMA Brotherhood.). Now those are anime I’ll recommend.
Escaflowne was inspired by Dunbine which this piece of shit was a spin off to…
I love crossover reviews. I just saw this one, along with Sage and the Cinema Snob. YOU TWO ARE AMAZING!!!!!! <3 <3 <3
Spoony got a belly on him!
Sage lost weight since last year.
What I fail to understand is: “Why does Bennett get Noah to do these joint anime reviews?” from what I have heard the Spoony One say, he really does not care about anime.
I think mainly because Noah is awesome when he looks flabbergasted and/or furious.
I couldn’t agree more~
Because Bennet knows people will watch the video if Spoony is in it. I mean if you look Spoony has nothing to do with the creation of the review other than reading his part and “being a good sport”. Also, like I said on Spoony’s Highlander Endgame review, I have an odd feeling the beginning of the video is at least somewhat similar to how Spoony agreed to collaborate on this. Well… minus Larz.
You couldn’t be further from the truth. A briefcase full of cash made it all possible.
I would think that a check or simply a manila envelope would be more practical. Briefcases are expensive
Haha XD btw, the highlander review was pretty interesting~I loved the little scene u did in the beginning.~
11:06 – dear god it sounds like something The Ultimate Warrior would say
I’m going to have to check this out now. My friends and I have always thought “Windaria” was bad.
“You certainly got sexy!”
I am so going to start responding to people’s greetings like that.
That Pixie sounds familiar. I can’t quite think of where I heard it before though.
She was Vulpix! :D
…You know something? I bet if they tweak the script a little bit, they could turn this into another flashy Highlander sequel!
MD Geist is worse.
Great review! Glad to see more spoony! :)
Ed Glaser: the homosexual bell-hop who will sex you up so good you completely forget about traumatically bad animes.
“KILL! KILL! MURDER! DEATH! KILL! KNIVES! FLOODS OF BLOOD!” BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
You’re not alone, Spoony. I hate anime, too. Just kick him in the shin and run, that’s what I always did when asked to suffer through that crap.
You probably should have mentioned somewhere in the review that this was written and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the original creator of Mobile Suit Gundam.
Another great review spooney! Sage’s opening drawl was really funny and actually scary, he also had some really funny facial expressions throughout. Sage you’re a good actor man!
Great review guys keep em coming give us stuff to laugh at :)
And Garzeys Wings is connected to another show called Aura Battler Dunbine, a Fantasy Mecha show, witten by Kill em all Tomino of Mobile Suit Gundam fame.
You know, I didn’t find this to be as bad as their reactions made it out to be, I mean it was horrid and if I sat through the whole thing my head would implode from the sheer stupidity. Even so I kept finding their reactions of “OMFG this is the worst anime evar!” a bit excessive, the show is bad but I don’t think the review really showcased it as being the worst.
I agree, it just felt really forced the way they were reacting.
This is an unusual pairing…. Spoony has always been a comedy act but the Sage guy?
DAMN YOU YOMATOTAKARUNOMIKOTOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
this is why i never care for japanese culture….well that and final fantasy.
A little narrow minded of ya, isn’t it?
That’s like saying you reject American culture because of Gigli and Battlefield Earth.
actually, if anyone claims those are their reasons for rejecting American culture, I wouldn’t begrudge their decision.
I actually grew up in and still live in Japan and, believe me, there are a lot of reasons to hate this country – Japanese politics not the least of them, anime probably the worst of them.
I’ll agree tthat Japanese politicians are fucking morons, but if a guy like Ishihara is elected for 3 times now, then it says a lot about their people in general as in the fact that they just don’t know who to vote for or just don’t at all. Also, the amount of intolerance in Japan is highly non-negligible. I swear, most of older Japanese are prime examples of this being that they are what I call “Relics From the World War”. But yeah,to say that anime in itself has a negative impact to Japanese society is a very narrow-minded view since not only it helped put Japan on the map but also helped its economy(believe it or not)thanks to the very otakus people tend to constantly bash on. Things like these tend to go both ways but the key as with everything else is balance and moderation. Exactly how is that managed is beyond me as a 21-year-old from S. Korea raised in the US wouldn’t know firsthand how their society really works.
and this is why i never care for american culture
This might be the last anyone hears of me. I’m going to stare into a mirror and say “Nexafluckachuckafuck” three times and see what happens.
How did Sage fit beside the bed lol?
Garzey’s Wing is simply horrendeous. If anything the horrible dub makes it enjoyable! Atleast you get a good laugh out of the complete lack of acting.
The thing is that this series was written and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the dude who did the bulk of the earlier Gundam shows and several other high-profile series. He is generally held in high regard in Japan and here in the west as well. It is, however, universally agreed that Garzey sucked as did his next show Brainpowerd. However I personally fail to see any difference between these two series and the rest of his, well-received shows. They all seem to suffer from the same similar problems of slapdashed pacing, weird dialog, disjointed behavior and over-all weird shit. I’ve seen most of his works and found two where I could overlook these production failures: King Gainer for the EXTREMELY catchy opening theme complete with biomecha doing the monkey dance and Turn-A Gundam for having a wonderful setting and glorious mechanical designs by Syd Mead oh and Yoko Kanno’s soundtrack helped!
Im a huge Gundam fan :D
I concur. The anime itself was funnier than the commentary. In regards to Spoony overall, it seems like the mighty have fallen. I seriously feel for the dude due to how much shit, personal attacks (not only on him but his undeserving GF) and anonymous douche-baggery he’s had to deal with over the last couple of years. Not to mention his own health. But that said, smart-humored, humbly self-deprecating, funny Spoonster seems to have been out of commission for a while and given rise to a slovenly, seemingly-uncaring vlogger who doesn’t have half the spark he used to.
Then again, when I observe the completely inexcusable, immature and egomaniacal behavior he exhibited while interacting with a Spike Games rep, I think he reaps what he sows, criticism-wise. Reading that, I was embarrassed to call myself a fan of his.
It seems like winning the whole mashable thing did more harm then good for our dear Noah.
I do end to agree with some of the things Spoony says but I don’t think anime in of itself is as horrible as Spoony thinks,it’s just the way it is presented(esspecially nowadays) that tend to turn people off. Here’s some decent series to try and remedy all the shit this one OVA has to offer.
Fist of the North Star
Naoki Urasawa’s Monster
Graveyard of Fireflies(just don’t forge the tissue cause this one is pretty depressing)
Paprika(It is a mindfuck but a funny one at that)
I second everything on this list. The only items on it I’ve not watched are Millennium Actress and Full Metal Alchemist (I’ve only read through volume 17 of the manga). I highly suggest Monster, as it’s quite a bit different from other anime. No mecha, or magical/psychic girls, or pretty boys (aka bishonen, or bishis) It really could have been filmed as live action, but they chose to tell the story with animation, which for me, increased the atmosphere and the emotional impact of a lot of scenes.
Interesting crossover….you guys both did great!~hey Sage, what was with the creepiness in the beginning? anyways u guys were soo funny!~ Spoony, u loved it did u? XD
Roxanne Beck was the one who voiced that frigging fairy pixie thing
The wings…they extend from his feet? Wow, ripping off the Submariner is pretty low.
Thing about this anime, and I can’t believe I even know this shit, is that it’s a sort of sequel/spin-off of another work by the same writer/director called Aura Battler Dunbine. Thankfully, that one has mechs and makes more sense that this shitstorm of an OVA.
If the pixie was Falan then she was…Patty Mayonnaise from DOUG, HOLY EFF http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0065270/ I feel sick inside after watching this and I…well I like anime, usually older stuff, but wow. I have no words for how horrible this is.
On another note the one that talked about vampires looked bad@ss. XD;;;
Haha this does kind of sum up anime pretty well. God I’ve seen so much pretentious garbage anime, and stuff that people actually recommended as “good” like Ghost in the Shell or other pseudo-intellectual garbage.
I’ve never been able to get into anime. Even the so called best of the genre has a lot of unbearable moments and the art style just looks bad to me.
The only anime I’ve ever watched all the way through is Death Note and I thought that was pretty damn good. I liked watching Cowboy Beebop once in awhile when it was on Adult Swim, too, but as a general rule I hate anime.
Wouldn’t an MST3K commentary track to this movie have been more effective? The thing is only three episodes long, that’s just about feature length movie time there. And how many epic fail things didn’t we see because Spoony and the Sage had to mug at the camera and make unfunny jokes?
no way cause the robots would probably RIP THEIR HEADS OFF AND THROW THEM OUT THE AIRLOCK
It’s not a Ghost. It’s Zordon!
Meh. The anime didn’t seem to live up to the hype. Other than the start of it with the completely “What? What? What?….. What?” eliciting randomness, it didn’t seem super horrible. Don’t get me wrong, it looked like a completely unenjoyable movie that would make your brain bleed but Space Thunder Kids was far FAR worse. Things like hating the fairy’s voice was also pretty meh because I’ve seen far worse voice acting and far more annoying characters. None of the voice acting topped the Resident Evil voice acting in terms of badness. It seemed like you guys were trying to hard on this and using much stronger reactions than the scenes actually called for. I think the over all problem is just that you played it up to be much worse than what it was.
It kinda looks like you could make a pretty decent movie out of this one, if you just edited it for pacing…and cut out the sound completely, and replaced it with a pure music score. Like a retroactive “Interstella 5555″—just use Dead Can Dance instead of Daft Punk, and you’d be good.
(Just cover up the rough spots by running an action sequence in slowmo while Lisa Gerrard wails plaintively. Works like a charm.)
It wasn’t that difficult to follow.
The voice acting was spotty.
Not a horrible watch though.
not since the awkward laughing scene in Santa Clause Conquers the Martians has laughing been so frighteningly painful
I watched this review drunk as hell, but I imagine the movie wouldn’t have made any more sense had I been sober.
This show looks like such an Aura Battler Dunbine rip off
Tomino! How could you!? Zeta Gundam! IDEON!!! L. Gaim!? Ugh… and here I thought he was flawless…
Cute review, made just a bit more painful than it could have been by the idea that Bennett “multaplare” The Sage may want to reevaluate his strengths as an internet personality. If you ask me, comedy sure ain’t one of them.
That was just painful to watch, I don’t mean the review but just knowing something this bad is out there and got a horrible dub on top of it, and I’ve seen my fair share of that combination before!
And I’m just waiting for some weird future twist where Lars isn’t actually employed by the hotels and is really just a big fan of Spoony’s and likes collecting his various….things.
This looked bad, but it didn’t look like the worst anime ever, seriously Ikki Tousen has just as awful dubbing, animation and writing, without any of this ones humor, plus it’s really, really creepy, you need a shower after watching the tiniest glimpse of it. Repeat for Queen’s Blade.
Oh god, you’re so right, I almost forgot about Ikki Tousen. The contrived plot, poor voice acting and disgusting “fanservice”, if it can even be called that, puts it over the top.
No! If you speak of Ikki Tousen you’ll bring it back into the universe from the heated depths of Hell! Damn it, Satan, we had a deal! We had a deal!!!
Ah. Apparently by referring to it I have inadvertently started the apocalypse.
… I should really read the fine print on those contracts.
oh great now u turned the world into Left 4 Dead…Everyone lookout for the Hunters
u dunce its not the Apocalypse for 3 reasons:
1 I seen no angels or demons having a bar fight
2 i havent been called by my superiors to spread the chaos
and 3 the other horsemen are playing Nazi zombies with Hitler which means that they also haven’t gotten the call
Are you sure? The other night down at the bar the archangel Gabriel was boasting about how he was going to invite Odin and Hemodr over from Vallhala and they were going to make the burning of Sodom and Gommorah look like Burning Man. That doesn’t sound promising!
Queen’s Blade is FUN, though.
Subbed Ikkitousen is tolerable…
This was a terrible anime. Really bad. But I’ve come across worse.
… the doctors say that the trauma induced by watching them had the same effect as an insulin coma. It’s okay now, though, because they give me electroshock therapy and the pink bunnies with the machine guns are very friendly.
… I still can’t figure out why the rabbits carry Uzies…
you poor soul, listen if u want to become truly sane…watch The Expendables, Die Hard, and a Chuck Norris move at the same time and if you dont keel over from a Bad ass-attack god will give you your sanity back
or talk to Isaac clark about a job as a necromorph slayer the crazies always last longer then others
Can anyone tell me where/what podcast that scene with the robots at the cinema, making fun of Puma man is from?
It’s from Mystery Science Theatre 3000, it’s basically a precursor to all of the podcasts making fun of bad movies.
I lve how his jacket trasported onto the bed
Wow… As a Anime and Manga fan that has to some of the worst writing and dubbing I have ever seen… See bad dubbing is the exact reason Why I sometimes will watch an Anime in the original Japanese, because then it’s sometimes not as bad XD
Anyways awesome video I loved it XD
if your not a girl u need to turn in your man cards RIGHT NOW DUDE
I will still argue that, while Garzey’s Wing is indeed crap it is nothing compared to the concentrated, military-grade FAIL that is the Fighting Beauty Wulong OVA.
It’s haywire plot that rampages all over the place like a juggernaut on rocket skates, completely unlikable characters, and tired premise is enough to make me ill just thinking about it.
what the crap did that guy do to spoony in the last few minutes
drug him, “do” him, or what?
If you’d watched the other Sage and Spoony review, you’d know that he’s a professional butt-wiper. x]
its called a lobotomy, its when scientists cut the connection between your brain and the rest of your body which turns you into a drooling, brain dead, retarded, vegetable
The only other anime I can compare to this would be Dangaioh; I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned yet. I mean, not only is the source material bad, it was cut horribly and the dub…well, search for “Dangaioh dub” on Youtube, and it should be the first result.
Is it just me or does the Hooded Stranger sound like Kermit the Frog?
u mean spoony parody of that hooded guy
It cannot be as bad as Bounty Dog.
You think THAT’s bad? Try:
MD Geist: makes a lot less sense than this (I think it’s the only anime that actually got famous by being SO BAD)
Tenkuu Danzato Skelter Heaven: has no intro, conclusion or reason and doesn’t try to explain anything, it’s pure mindfuckery.
Manga Entertainment destroyed Dangaioh with its dub and terrible cutting. The show itself is considered a classic, drawing from the same talent pool as “Fight! Iczer-1″ (which was terribly paced but aesthetically impressive for its time) and was an important launch platform for some big names like Toshihiro Hirano and Masami Obari, and complemented with mecha designs from renown mecha designer Shoji Kawamori.
The first OVA of Dangaioh was an action title with a 40 minute runtime and was created as a tribute to 70s mecha series like Mazinger. The following OVAs were released after the original garnered some popularity, but it seems that members of the creative staff quickly diminished with the subsequent releases, killing the would-be series. Regardless, Masami Obari – an exceptional artist and animator who now works more as a director (which I do not believe he is very good at, look at the visually-impressive but convoluted-plot of Detonator Orgun) put out some of his best work in this series. At some point it was leaked that Manga Entertainment had apparently damaged the master copy of Dangaioh OVA 1 during production, which is why it got cut down into a “prologue” – a huge disservice considering it is the best of the bunch and superior to its follow-ups in every way.
Manga Entertainment had inherited many of their licences from US Renditions when they went under including Dangaioh, Macross 2, Black Magic M-66, and Appleseed. US Renditions had only released Subtitled versions of anime (with some humorous translation errors – “SIDE KICK WAVE!!” – but these were the early days of anime). The approach taken by US Renditions was something which Manga Entertainment sought to “correct” with their horrible writing, direction, and talent. They did succeed on at least one front – they managed to reduce a classic to mediocre and proved that they could make bad shows even worse.
But there’s good anime that has been trashed by poor localization, and then there’s just plain trash. Garzey’s Wing really isn’t the worst show of it’s kind, but it’s really up there. It ranks right up there with Landlock, but MD Geist II: Death Force exceeds it by not only being a bad anime, but a bad sequel to a bad anime as well. And Psychic Wars is a baseless and confusing show, lacking any compelling measure with its audience despite supposedly being an action show.
What makes a truly terrible anime requires a combination of poor animation, poor design, poor art, poor plot, poor pacing, poor character development, poor translation, and perhaps most importantly – a total lack of originality. Garzey’s Wing was supposed to be a re-imagining of the universe used in the classic series Aura Battler Dunbine, which literally invented the Fantasy Mecha genre over a decade before Escaflowne made it popular in the US. Therefore, Garzey’s Wing doesn’t even have the benefit of being original as a result.
Garzey’s Wing isn’t the worst of its kind, but it more than qualifies among the top 10 worst shows ever. It’s really hard to find shows that compare to its drudgery.
there is an anime ova that goes at a pace like garzys wing its called angel sanctuary a crappy adaptation of a 20 volume manga series that tries to cram in 3 volumes of it into a 3 episode ova by taking out characters that were essential to the story arc that the ova was set in, and never giving us the time to process whats happening in one scene then skip to another every 20 seconds, then they do there very best to not explain how various things that were explained in the manga happen in the anime for example how was the insanely powerful narcissistic angel dude freed from his prison well he just appears out of nowhere in the manga it explains his loyal companion used a computer game armed with a forbidden spell to drain humans of there life force when they played it yeah I know its stupid but just bear with me its manga but then again there is more more absurd shit then that kind of medium like maybe high school students reincarnated from Chinese warlords of the romance of the three kingdoms to justify random street fights to take over other high schools.
Its still not as bad as a little nugget of horror I like to call Bounty Dog. Review that and gain my eternal respect.
you know what I hate about anime? Those stupid, random, instances when all of the characters break out in over the top laughter. It is so freaking annoying!
Doesn’t all animated things do that? Prehaps I am thinking of the “and everybody laughs” ending….
eh, good point. Those endings are annoying too.
and since 95% of them are about stupid (and i mean REALLY STUPID) teen girl furries exploited….i wouldn’t be suprised if it turned u into a girl in 3 days unless u watch a chuck norris film and the expendables at the same time to keep your man card validated
They should have changed all the pixie’s dialogue to “SHRIEK! SHRIEK! SHRIEK! SHRIEK!” at least then she might have been tolerable to watch.
JESUS CHRIST! That is the worst anime i have ever seen! Now if you’ll excuse me *goes to amazon.com* in my defense its only $1.75 LOL
To Sage and Spoony, if you would still like to kill the voice actress for the two inch harpy I found her. Falan Fa
voiced by: Roxanne Beck (English dub) source Wikipedia…
QUICK EVERYONE GET A CAN OF RAID WE’L SHOVE IT DOWN HER THROAT
Is this the book of Revelations?
no…why there is no menton of the seven angels….no 3 woes and worst of all…NO FUCKING HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE…..THAT WOULD MAKE THIS SHIT HAVE SOME REDEEMABLE FACTOR
Can’t get over that Sage looks like Karl Urbans kid brother.
worst one i saw was some crap called Mew Mew Power…and now it is the cornerstone of my dementia
That sounds amazing.
i got this anime without knowing how much it sucked, I was given some money to do a little shopping for my birthday and I saw this and considering its a story of an enslaved people going up against there oppressors I thought it might be worth watching I was so wrong. I couldn’t watch it for probably up to that scene where Chris first comes to the alternate world and everything was going so fast that it doesn’t give me time to process on what the fuck happened that to this day I felt I should’ve gotten any anime but this.
Starting at 16:00, I could see what was coming a mile away with the lead-in to a possible fairy death, you guys going “yes… YES… YES!!!” and then nothing happens and you guys go “NOOOOOO”; and yet, I found it so hilarious when it finally happened. And I was laughing like crazy when you did the running gag with the butt-wiping character. It’s as if he’s also got a sexy assistant woman giving you a blow job or something.
oh my GOD ITS BRIDGET AND ZOEY FROM MEW MEW POWER ABANDON FILM AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GET THE CHAINSAW
alright anime idiots (aka makers of anime) of ya gonna make an anime….just take the Hunter from Left 4 dead eating and brutally executing other anime characters with the powers of Alex mercer…and while i’m at it…add the four horsemen of the Apocalypse i’d tune in
There is no way that this was actually created by the same guy who did Gundam (Yoshiyuki Tomino). If it was, everyone would have died, and we’d all be much happier because of it.
nexachuckaduckafluck. god thats fun to say.
id hire them too
Hey Spoony I found out who voiced that annoying fairy, it’s Roxanne Beck.
Oh my, I think I heard the VA of the damned fairy in the English dub of Akira. It’s still just as irritating.
How the fuck is Oedo 808 on the list as a bad anime? All I can guess is that the American dub was different and worse than the British one, based on Sengoku’s voice sounding wrong in that clip.
It is just that one line that was terribly done and is quite infamous here in the US.
Yes! I’m not the only one who sleeps with their clothes on!
Yes! I’m not the only one who sleeps with his clothes on!
cheapest voice actor ever!
Clearly Sage has never played Final Fantasy X if he never knew that laughter could be agonizing…
Actually, I think he used that clip of Tidus laughing in one of his Anime Abandon videos, though I can’t remember offhand which one.
I love sage’s face so much in 11:15. He’s trying so hard not to laugh!
the first time i saw his helmet i thought it said anal. oops. well at least i got the place this movie came out of right…
Id LOVE to see that guy as king lear
That pixie is … Roxanne Beck. I thought I recognized her voice, as she was in the dub of Revolutionary Girl Utena. … She was also Patty Mayonnaise in Doug. Head’s up. XD
You might be charged for manslaughter soon, she won’t last much longer after Sage and Spoony see that comment
Damn Sage is creepy as fuck
Great apparently the spirt world is somewhere in the English Home Counties
hey spirited away and kiki’s delivery service prove anime can be good…if not touched by american editors and if so only slightly.
Sage can be one scary mofo sometimes 0.0
Wow. When I was in college, we had a group of guys make a radio drama called Idiot Knights. It was crazy, stupid, and you could tell it was made on a budget of no more than 15 dollars. Why would I bring this up? The masked man in this anime with the horrible voice that bombs the hydra has the SAME EXACT VOICE as one of the knights from the drama. The funny thing is that it was still better than this anime.
oh man this was a funny one!
Remember, spoony. Now, no matter what he shows you, you can’t complain, because it’s not this.
Also, I never thought I’d see anything that made less sense than FLCL. I was wrong. At least the randomness in FLCL was consistent and intentional.
Jason Voorhees is about to decapitate Spoony & Sage, when Jason sees Garzey’s Wing. Takes one look & impales himself on his own machete. Garzey’s Wing so bad that even an unstoppable killer could stand to see it.
Still a better love story than twilight
I recently watched a bit of it. It isn’t great or even good, but it most definitely isn’t as horrible as this review’s making it. I got a B-movie feel out of it, something that takes itself seriously but no else is going to take it that way. Even so, it IS bad. Not worth watching in the slightest, managing to be boring, confusing, and painfully slow-paced at the same time.
Didn’t scroll down too far, but did anyone notice that it might be a bit uncomfortable to sleep in that jacket?
Ah, not all anime are bad. There’s a lot of beautifully written and animated ones. It’s meaningless bullshit like Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist that give anime a bad name. The good ones become buried away and confined to recommendations and Netflix (not that that is too bad) and the shitty, annoying ones are easier to find than a rectangle-shaped electronic.
it’s a shame, as the animation is really good
The is exactly why i hate 90s anime. Thank god companies like Funimation and Viz helped improve the standard in recent years.
Are you certain the dub actors aren’t trying to be bad on PURPOSE? XD This sounds a lot like Animeworks and they’re famous for f*cking around with bad anime for the lulz of it.
This is some kind of sequel to cultclassic Aura Battler Dunbine, many of problems is solved when you saw another series in this universe. But this animie is still crapy. One of the worst of Tomino series.
