The Spoony One | Jan 13 2009 | more notation(s) |

I’ve seen a few of the Oscar favorites to ring in the new year: Gran Turino, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Slumdog Millionaire! Here’s what I thought!

I was given the same synopsis for slumdog before I saw it and was expecting the worst, but I think it might have been my favorite movie of the year. the mode of storytelling was original and all the scenes were especially intense, also it felt like said character’s death was meant to coincide with the ending, it was a fitting way to go.
I don’t wanna see benjamin button for the same reasons you listed
and gran turino was amazing :)
always love hearing your commentary, thanks!

It’s the T-Shirt Jason Lee wears in “Mallrats”, I don’t think he was in Scrubs. Loved the review. Waiting to see “The Wrestler” myself, not out over here in Ireland until the 16th.

I went to go see Doubt with my girlfriend this past weekend and I’ll say that it has definite Oscar cred. Meryl Streep is the single most terrifying thing I’ve seen on screen. Of course that might just be my nun issues talking. It was excellent.

Also saw the totally not Oscar worthy The Unborn which is only worth mentioning because of how comically inept the big bad was. It was basically just creepy until an old woman says that it it’s going to start killing people at which point it almost seems like it said “Holy shit! I can do that?” and starts killing people. It’s hilariously bad.

grand turimo, huh? you know, i don’t get into drama movies all that much, but if i can get into the plot, im willing to see how it plays out. you ever seen city by the sea? great movie. its ’bout a kid whos having trouples with his dad, and he gets in trouple on the street and what not, and the dad is a cop. stars robert de niro. anyway, the plot of grand torino sounds intriguing. i’ll pick it up if i ever run into it.

Monster was a movie about being redeemed from racism and whatnot.

But the only reason I saw the movie was to watch Halle Berry getting banged on the couch.
Main reason that movie came to mind to be honest xD

I will say that I certainly doubt the topic of Gran Torino has EVER been covered in that way. Every racist I’ve seen in Hollywoodland maybe knows one racial slur for one race and is reconciled by the end to be a completely PC-talking man. And… well, this way was very considerably more human. Frankly, Clint Eastwood’s character reminded me pointedly of my granddad, also a Korean war vet.

…of course… my granddad lacks the, for lack of a better term, charisma to pull it off that Clint Eastwood had in spades.

And the audience was rolling in my theatre, too.

You know what movie Gran Torino reminds me of a bit? Flawless. I’m not saying either was better or worse than the other, but the concept is fairly similar, and I’m a huge Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robert Deniro fan. Worth checking out if you haven’t.

You know it’s funny you mention Archie Bunker because as I watched Gran Turino I turned to my brother and said “Clint Eastwood is summoning the spirit of Archie Bunker for this movie” and it’s totally true. Plus it is hilariously pulled off and the character relations are well defined even if we’ve “seen it all before”.The thing about Clint’s movies is that he absolutely plays off of stereotypical thinking and flawed characters and atypical events but does it such a crafted way that you usually can’t help but be sucked into the story. He’s always a delight to watch, especially since he seems to grace us with his presence on the screen less and less and likes to focus more on making pictures instead of making and starring in them (not that I’m complaining, it was just nice to see him again).

Have not seen any of these films yet and I don’t think I will go and see Benjamin Button. A 2 1/2 hour film about a wrinkly baby aging in reverse. No thanks.
If he is born a normal sized old age baby does he die a full adult sized baby?

Seen the wrestler and it is pretty good from clips I saw I thought it would be like Rocky thank god it wasn’t although the ending was pretty pants your like “is that it”.

I completely agree with your take on Gran Torino expect I wouldn’t ever call Clint’s character a racist since he doesn’t seem to actually hate anyone. Like Archie Bunker, he’s just out of date with the politically correct terms.

The Wrestler is the best movie I’ve seen this year, so I hope you enjoy and am looking forward to your “review” on it.

Benjamin Button was not boring “at times”, it was boring from beginning to end. This is the only movie I’ve ever seen where nothing interesting happened. Nothing. NOTHING. The movie’s concept is brilliant on paper, but they managed to portray it in the most boring way possible. I don’t even really feel like typing this, thinking about this movie makes me that mad.

On another note, when he’s at the brothel and the woman says “What are you, Dick Tracy?”, what the hell was that? Was it supposed to be funny? The last time I checked, Dick Tracy’s a detective, but she just got finished having sex. Was Dick Tracy some kind of sexual prodigy? It doesn’t even count as a joke.

The only thing that REALLY bothered me about Gran Turino were the other actors. I don’t care how great Clint Eastwood’s performance was, every time one of the child actors or gangbangers were on the screen, I couldn’t help but cringe. The performance by the young girl was especially awful. I’ve seen MUCH better acting in student films. But if you could ignore the other actors and focus on Eastwood, you’ll find the movie to be very refreshing and enjoyable.

My problem with Gran Turino was the ending; here they had spent this entire movie showing him building up a relationship with the family and becoming closer with the young mans character and than his funeral scene is all of maybe 5 seconds. It felt really empty and lacking. Like he rushed it to get to the credits. And I still find it amusing that after leaving the theater my friend summed up the movie with one line, “So she gets raped and he gets a new car?”

I’ve seen all of the film you mentioned here. My only problem with Slumdog is that Salim is all over the place. His character’s motives are completely illogical. He can’t decide whether or not to screw over his brother. As for the other, you cam to the same conclusion as myself. BUT, take s look at Frost/Nixon. It is surprisingly exciting.

I’ve seen Gran Torino and I liked it I thought it was an entertaining film. As for Slumdog and the Curious Case, I have not seen them. I cannot decide on which one to see, especially now that I’ve seen this. It sounds like Curious Case was boring, and I’m unsure about Slumdog, so I don’t know whcih one to see.

Nice Vlog, Spoony. Just a couple of fun facts…I work at an indy film theater in Metro Detroit, and Slumdog Millionaire is drawing a ridiculous amount of business right now. Four weeks running and it’s still selling out! As for Gran Turino, a good portion of that movie was filmed literally just two blocks down the street from where I live!

Nice video! I think you made some very good points. I definitely agree that Salim’s death in Slumdog Millionaire felt kind of forced, but I completely loved the rest of the film. I especially liked the music. My favorite scenes were the Paper Planes montage and th Jai Ho Bollywood dance scene.

First of all, i just love your videos, i havent been a fan for all that long, i recently found out about this webpage, but since i found it i’ve watched through just about every movie i’ve found :P.

And on the subject, your challenge to name another movie in which the characters overcome their prejudice and learn the true meaning of love/friendship/freedom/christmas etc.., i thought of American History X long before you even threw out the challenge, and that’s another example of a movie that may have a story thats been done to some degree, but it still pulls it off to damn good that its really heartwarming yet tragic at the same time.

Oh dearest of all mightiest nordic Gods, I HATED The Curious Case of Benjamin Button! Ok, you got a good idea, an interesting concept…
…and you managed to exploit it for well over 2 hours…
The opening scene was good, that with the backwards clock and all… that was kind of touching… didn’t really have any impact on the movie!
OK, Benjamin meets a beautiful human being… beautiful human being “A” dies
OK, now he’s younger… he meets another beautiful human being… beautiful human being “B” dies
… now he’s even younger, and he meets another beautiful human being… who dies
OOOOH A METAPHOR!…. OK metaphor’s over, now he’s younger and meets another beautiful human being who, of course, dies…
    lather, rinse & repeat
    for HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Danny Boyle is hands down one of the best active directors at this time. I honestly thought Sunshine was one of the spot less Sci-Fi films of the past decade, and the same goes for 28 Days Later in the horror genre. If that whole “Pinbacker” sub plot was excised I would have found it perfect. It took me a second viewing to begin to appreciate Slumdog, but I still think it was the wrong movie for him to win awards for. Trainspotting is still his best in my opinion.

American History X came to mind as soon as you started talking about the synopsis.

I am recently catching up on your videos, so yeah I know it’s old news, but I totally hated “The Curious Case…”. First of all it was basically a “Forrest Gump” rip off, only without the humor, just with extreme boredom, second of all, the illness that Benjamin had in the movie didn’t serve any purpose at all – I mean the same things could have been told with a regular kid just growing up in a nursing home. Thank you for not giving it some big praise like most of the people. I even saw people giving it a 10/10, which is just plain stupid.
