The Spoony One | Aug 24 2009 | more notation(s) |

Quinlan does some footwork around town, following Catherine’s tracks to the Virtual Library and Jimmie Walker’s “Smoke Shop.” But the star-studded celebrity parade continues as we also encounter 2-time Oscar nominee Burgess Meredith! And he’s mean!

Your green screens are FABULOUS, Ripper darling. Mai gosh, I’ve seen better editing on the Nostalgia Critic’s videos.
I’d never be able to get through this game on my own, I much prefer watching someone play it for me. xD Especially someone with a mind for puzzles.

    Good morning, Spoony.

It sounds like you didn’t get the strategy guide for this game. How you originally got through it without that book is beyond me. Some of the stuff they expected you to know to figure out the riddles (like the code involving prescription eyeglasses or something like that) was beyond me.

Oh, and Staff of Magius? Kudos for not even TRYING to hide how much of a geek you are.

Spoony, your commentary is awesome as always, but this just isn’t as interesting game as Phantasmagoria 2 :/ Still, It’s great let’s play, but I was expecting more from the actual game. I’m however excited to see the rest :p Keep on going!

Say what you want, that crystal puzzle is still not as bullshitty as the later levels of the first G-Police game – If things had been reversed and I had gotten that, and my friend G-Police 2, I would have hanged myself.

Oh god, this game is suffering from Xenosaga syndrome. They shove a bunch of foreign technobabble up your ass, and expect you to know what the hell they’re talking about. About a third of the way though the conversation, and you’ve zoned out completely. So, please, tell me what the hell is going on? Apparently there’s this crazy green guy named the Ripper who likes to rip things, namely internal organs, and he sends all of his murder letter to Quinlan, a reporter who then publishes them in the paper. His girlfriend gets a lead on the identity of the Ripper, but then she gets too close for the Ripper’s liking, and she is attacked. Fortunately, she survives, but is put into a coma…somehow. She has the identity of the Ripper in her head, but it’s fragmented, and now Quinlan has to find clues that can be transmitted inside of her head in order to fill in the blanks. To do this, he goes to the police station, where he finds Magnotta, a rogue officer that can’t be trusted. He also learns that Renee, Ripper’s previous victim, was in the library the night she died. He then goes into that insane cyberspace to the library, where he learns the Renee was into the historical Jack the Ripper. He then solves that weird crystal puzzle to learn that his girlfriend was into the Horoscopes, something you could figure out by just walking into her apartment, and then he goes and meets Jimmie Walker and Burgess Meredith for…some reason, and that’s all I got.

  • Rik

Love it. Again. Keep ´em coming Spoony!

    Isaacian27,

As a Ripper veteran (one of my favorite, older games), let me just tell you that this stuff starts making more sense as it goes along.

“Horoscope”, for example, isn’t meant to be merely an interest of Catherine’s, but a needed piece of information for later.

And the world of computers becomes CENTRAL to this game. Quinlan spends a huge amount of time either IN cyberspace, or talking to people who work WITH cyberspace. Hence why Jimmy Walker (deals with cyberspace) and Burgess Meredith (brother dealt with cyberspace) are there.

    Be patient. It’s worth it.

This is the second time that the game pretends the gamer to be super-precise: first the cup (in the prologue) and now the crystal puzzle…and both seem a waste of time when you’ve finished them. Surely they’re going to have some sort of meaning in future…
So, keep on playing, Spoony…and be strong! ;)

It just felt like Burgess was expecting to be a wizard in a fantasy game. He walked on set, and told him to stand in front of a green screen. He asked, “Where’s my wand?” So they tossed him a broom and told him to read the cards. Afterwards they gave him a couple of Ruby Tuesday coupons, a cookie and a warm glass of milk and sent him to bed.

This guy, who’s cottage we have to search, somehow (probably using cheese), went back in time, thru the internet, and brought back Jack the Ripper, or was possed by him or something. Am I right?

I knew the answer and how the pattern had to look like, but you had to put the dots almost pixel-perfect to solve that bitch.

“It’s only 2040. George R. R. Martin probably isn’t done with it yet.”

Yeah, hasn’t the next book been a year away for the last four years or something? I loved how in Feast for Crows he made fun of himself by having the last chapter being titled something like, “Meanwhile, with the characters you really care about…”

    sigh…..

Ripper must’ve had the most apathetic director in the history of filmmaking, either that or he was too intimidated by all the big-named stars to actually give any sort of direction to them. *Sigh* I really wanted to like this game, give it a chance what with Christopher freakin’ Walken and all. But in the end, despite the cast, the mechanics of the game are just your usual badly executed FMV adventure game. I guess Gabriel Knight and Tex Murphy keep their distinctions for being the kings of that genre. :)

Excellent job Spoony, loving your commentary. I never noticed that Jimmy Walker kept peeking at the script in his lap, good eye! That’s bad when your star power apparently don’t know their lines.

This first puzzle really bothered me.
I had absolutely no idea how ‘no_iaid’ could possibly ‘translate’ to 2020 and why Spoony didn’t seem to have any problems making this connection.
It took me a few google searches to realize that living in germany and avoiding doctors wherever possible doesn’t exactly help to figure this out.
I haven’t seen a Snellen chart for over a decade and even if I would have done so and actually paid attention to the numbers on the side, I still wouldn’t associate standard vision with anything other than 6/6 because of the the metric system.
It’s fascinating how such a seemingly trivial thing can almost become an unsolvable mystery if presented to someone from another part of the western world.

What I like about this game is that it dates back to that “Mondo 2000″, early-“Wired Magazine” period (1991-97) when people actually thought that the Web was going to be some sort of virtual reality zone out of Gibson’s “Neuromancer”…that meme died a hard death. BTW, the “well” they talk about referrs to the Whole Earth `Lectronic Link, an early search engine/super links page; also has anyone mentioned that this was Burgess Meredith’s last “film” project?

I know what you’re saying, but Phantasmagoria was more interesting because it was more like a “usual horror movie”. Closer to earth and easier to understand.

I’m however pretty sure that this game is going to be much more intense in next acts and if not, Spoony’s commentary will still make it worth watching

Pointlessly after the fact, but in 95 or so, you could always have hit Andy Eddy’s FTP site which hosted tons of FAQ’s for games. It had a crappy user interface, no skull headed woman in a skimpy outfit shooting files into your forehead or anything, but walkthroughs were available even before the WWW was widespread.

That crystal puzzle was ridicilous. Not (only) because of its insane difficulty but because it makes no frikkin sense. So what if someone, I dunno, MOVED the book? Or put something in the laser’s way, like a chair or a rack for drying clothes? Or if someone, like, slightly nudged the skull, the crystal box or the desk it stood on? To be frank, odds are one’s first thought upon solving the puzzle was that he failed some strange security check, not that the odd laser show was an actual reward…

I agree with old man murray. FPS’s didn’t kill off the adventure games, they obviously committed suicide…

Thank you so much for giving this game a run-around. I played it all the way up to CD 6, and then the CD crapped out on me, just as I was about to enter the final Well. So I’ve only seen the ending on YouTube, and that sucks, because the whole point of the game is that the Ripper can be one of four different characters in the game – and the game randomizes the identity of the Ripper for each new game. So I’ll never know who the Ripper was in my game.

I wonder who yours will be. :)

Also, I know you don’t like submissions, but I would seriously love to hear you riff on Trilobyte’s “The 11th Hour”. Not the actual game, mind you; just the asinine hour-long movie that unlocks in its entirety after you beat the game. I have the game discs and the savegame that lets you watch the entire movie without having to play the game, and I’d be more than happy to send them to you.

    Torben Frost,

“AFTER you beat the game”? Are you referring to a movie other than the one that plays in bits and pieces during the course of the game? Because I remember THAT movie, but don’t remember there being another one afterwards.

And if it’s the movie from the game, I wouldn’t mind hearing Spoony riff it. But then, I wouldn’t mind hearing Spoony riff damned near anything.

I’m always entertained when you put up a new riff video Spoony. You’re one of the few internet performers who can keep someone laughing with just your voice. I’m a little surprised that you didn’t mention that the random surgeon in Part 1 (after talking to Marion) was Paul Giamatti, though.

By the way, I noticed that you mentioned on Twitter how you were looking for more random quotes to adorn the top of the site. Here’s a few I hope you’ll like (they’re mostly movie quotes, because I love movies):

“What the hell am I looking at? When does this happen in the movie?”

    “We’re talking paranoid delusional psychosis.”

“Come on in, and try not to ruin everything by being you.”

    “I triple-dog dare ya!”

“Now with 100% more Cinema Snob!”

“Yes, Revolution of the Mask is awesome…”

“The sidebar ads speak truth… your meat is TAINTED…”

Here’s hoping you use some of ‘em! Keep up the great comedy!

@Disthron: If I got this right, it went like this:
“no i aid” is spoken like “no eye-aid”, which means “no glasses”. Apparently this translates to 20/20 because with 20/20…to be honest, I don’t know the unit…you can see as good as a human can. So you don’t need glasses.
In the metric system, it translates to 6/6 (according to wikipedia).

Because implying other gods may be right then implies your religion may be wrong.

Actually, Hebrews worshiped various gods. The Jewish people worshiped one (eventually). Hebrew doesn’t necessarily mean Jewish, there were non-Jewish Hebrews (like the Samaritans).

Also, shame on you for trying to undercut an Indiana Jones reference.

119 comments and nobody’s said it, so I will: The call number system the Virtual Library uses (which Spoony refers to as the “Dewey Decimal System OF THE FUTURE”) is a real thing. It’s the Library of Congress system. It’s used by many libraries in the U.S., though I don’t think as many use it as the Dewey.
