Dr. Insano’s flying boots have a few glitches.

The Spoony One | Nov 6 2011 | more notation(s) |

Dr. Insano’s supervillain career in DC Universe Online begins.

(It’s all based on the Adams Principle of Flight, that states the best way to achieve flight is to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Unfortunately, there is the potential for negative flight in this scenario.)

Doctor Insano: Discovering new horizons in SCIENCE!

  • http://twitter.com/MichaelCWells Michael Wells

How did you do that? I have played the game and never had that glitch. Well I have fallen below the ground but it was like right below it and I just jumped and got right.

Doctor Insano is mucking with Hypertime in DCUO!

  • http://twitter.com/david_ribeiro David Ribeiro

    Terrible.
That’s the kind of thing I do when testing half-asses maps and collisions on Unity, not something I would like to see on a full developed game.

  • Jeff Faklis

I hope you review it because I like it a lot!

  • Darkscar

ooh dr.insano, always inventing new ways to travel

    • Anonymous

Yeah, Insano was like: “Going through a door is so pedestrian. I, Dr. Insano, shall phase through the universe and then land outside the door. Why? FOR SCIENCE!”

  • http://www.deviantart.com/chibigingi ChibiGingi

As a QA tester myself, I am disappoint.

    • CoHScrapper

      -ed… fixed it for you…

      • jake

        Son, I am dissapoint

        • CoHScrapper

lol damn it, I missed it. I should have put “ed” in caps: “ED” …botched joke! bad me! bad me!

  • http://www.facebook.com/franman781 Kevin Franzen

Well i guess this is what you get with F2P. I wouldn’t expect it, but not complain when it happens since it is free…

      • Renaissance_nerd

        not anymore its not

        • http://twitter.com/MichaelCWells Michael Wells

well wtf I just did a 14.99 two weeks ago… this is bullshit *kills something* I am finding Spoony I want to watch the next epic fall (or Fail)

          • http://twitter.com/Chaosdirge William Kripas

You still get benefits for your subscription, you can go into the vault every day, premium once every 3 days free once a week.  you can trade items and money, you can get items and money in emails… the premium players can only get items , and the free to play players can’t get either. You also have 16 character slots,  Premium only has 6, free only has 2.

As well subscribers will always get the DLC packs free, anyone else has to buy them.  So you do get benefits well worth the 15 dollar price tag.

          • Anonymous

You think YOU’RE pissed, I bought a Lifetime subscription when it first came out.

      • Anonymous

It went free-to-play recently. As of this post, its on Steam’s front page as a free download. Thought about trying it myself, but didn’t; now I’m all the gladder I avoided it.

      • Lance LeDuc

only if you pay for it.

  • Jeff Faklis

And just so you know; you can use “super flight” when you become level 10.

  • Anonymous

I just started and got glitched in the starting zone, I picked up a vending machine and couldn’t drop/throw it! I couldn’t continue on (couldn’t hit switch to open a door) and couldn’t kill myself either, luckily logging out and back in worked although I had to start from the very beginning again. So yeah this game has some very bad glitches…

    • Randi Parker

You sure it was a glitch and not you failing to RIGHT click to throw the item at a range?  Left clicking when you got an item lifted just makes you bash with it.

      • Anonymous

Dude I pressed every key, clicked every mouse button, checked the key bindings, everything! I could not drop that damn vending machine for love or money…

  • Renaissance_nerd

Welcome to an SOE MMO Spoon

  • http://twitter.com/Wannabecritic Zach Gacula

You should do a lets play on DC universe.

  • Randi Parker

So apparently SOE has learned nothing since EQ2, where this fall through
the world problem still exists on occasion.  They also haven’t fixed
the game bugging out whenever something forces it to auto minimize
(instant messengers usually cause such a thing) since beta.  If there is one thing SOE is good at, it’s never fixing anything, or causing 15 problems for each problem fixed.

Still…this game is oddly fun as you level.  Damn you, SOE.

  • http://twitter.com/Maleficious Richard Von Hendy

    Oh god yes.

I watched this on blip when you made the twitter post about it.  I could not stop laughing when you fell through the world.  I am reminded a lot of the “Buggy Saints Row Musical” video on YouTube where they showcase several glitches, one where the main character fell through the ground.

Also, does the PS3 version share servers with the PC version?  If so, I may have to reactivate my account so I can bring back my supervillains: Burnoff, an obvious fire villain, and my tribute to the 90s, GUNSPLOSION!

    • http://twitter.com/MichaelCWells Michael Wells

      I believe they do.

      • Lance LeDuc

no; they are seperate servers. PS3 and PC.

  • http://twitter.com/MissMiaBrit Mia

I’m glad I watched this all the way through! Nice how it just decided to fix itself …. I wouldn’t have had the patience to fly all the way back up haha. :P

  • Anonymous

LMAO, Insano really does understand the Multiverse,
he just plummeted through Tartarus for 9 days

  • Anonymous

A FEW glitches? I’ve seen offset, dust filled NES carts that didn’t fuck up that hard.

  • Anonymous

OH NOES!!! The Glitch Gremlin has moved from AVGN’s consoles to yours. Now he’s going to glitch up all your PS3 and Xbox 360 games without mercy. Hurry Spoony, clean out all your discs before it strikes again!

  • http://twitter.com/Chaosdirge William Kripas

Hey, if you just let him fall all the way eventually he will just reset if you are lucky. You will fall back onto the city… you will encounter another loading screen before hand but  it will fix itself if you just let him fall all the way… however if you are unlucky like I was You will encounter the Black void of nothingness… My Green Lantern was trapped in the Black void of nothingness… apparently the darkest Night can actually stop a Green Lantern.

    • http://www.deviantart.com/chibigingi ChibiGingi

He actually does his at the very end of the video, and he seemed pretty surprised as to how the problem ‘resolved’ itself.  It was still a funny glitch, though, one that the QA testers should have caught.

      • http://twitter.com/Chaosdirge William Kripas

Yeah I saw that later… for some reason my video stopped after he fell through the second time without showing that and just went to play again.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AW3VX7HGVPJFFLYOQGRTPWDVFQ Joseph

No; you guys have it all wrong! It’s not a glitch! It’s the world of DC IMPLODING on itself from the sheer, epic, awesomeness that is SCIENCE!!!, whenever Dr. Insano tries to enter its realm!

Well, clearly DUCO’s universe is shaped like a torus.  Fall far enough and eventually you end up in the same place again. :)  I played the PC version for a few months.  I hit max level very, very fast. Even with my chronic altaholism meant I had to try every possible powerset up to level 15 or so.

  • Anonymous

Your videos have been entertaining lately! Love the Counter Monkies and the branching off of different subjects and games. Please do give us a lets play of you and your friends just playing through an DCOU instance sometime. Some of them are outright hilarious :)

  • Anonymous

Yeah that game gave me some troubles too glitch-wise. Its a shame because I was enjoying it fairly well compared to other MMO’s I’ve played. At least its F2P now.

So, with that said… what server are you on, Spoony?

    • Anonymous

From what I can tell, he’s on PS3PVP

  • Anonymous

So, why are you a bad guy apparently tasked to go after the Scarecrow?

    • Anonymous

To steal his Hidden Lair Technology.

Insano went clean-through the EARTH, far beyond the suggested sewers, and Scarecrow was nowhere in sight.  Nor were the sewers.

Now that’s some good villainous hiding you got there, Dr. Crane!

  • Anonymous

Well, Dr. Insano is the first person to travel all the way around the world by going through it at a straight line.

    My MIND!

    What the…

    “It’s DC Online, it’s got a few glitches.” :D

I just want to applaud that deadpan delivery.

    • doresh

Should’ve said “it STILL got a few glitches”.

Seriously, the game came out almost half a year ago. You’d think they would’ve fixed stuff like this by now.

      • Anonymous

You can say that again. The approach today seems to be to rush the game out and then fix it with patches afterwards. Some developers even seem to let the fanbase do all the work. I almost never buy a game instantly when it comes out anymore, especially if I want the PC version (or if it’s only a PC game). I just wait the mod community to fix the game.

I’m still waiting to buy Fallout: New Vegas. That game’s PS3 version had huge, game-crashing bugs at release, and I still don’t know if they are fixed. And now there are awesome mods for the PC version. I still think PC is the best gaming platform, but I opt for the easiness of consoles from time to time, so I don’t know what to do with that game. Oblivion was a great experience when fully modded for example.

Think something like Gothic 3 for example. That game was almost unplayable at first. You need the latest community patch to enjoy it. The publishers just want their games into shops quickly, so they can start getting the sales.

The problem is, many times the publishers actually fire the entire developer team as soon as the game is finished. Who then can upgrade and fix it? The fans. Unfair, but that’s how it seems to go these days. We just have to be real careful with our money.

        • doresh

People who buy a game on day one should really know it better XD

And it’s not only the PC versions that have these problems. Consoles have become more and more like PCs, especially when it comes to downloadable patches. Now even console developers can artificially increase developement time and get help from some stupid beta testers who actually PAY for the beta test XD

how can a game that has been out for this long still have such a basic glitch on a repeatbal level, what a crap game

    • Anonymous

Part of the problem is just the fact that adding a metric buttload of folks to the DCUO servers seems to make weird things happen. Like making Dr. Insano show up. I, for one, was totally expecting Dark Lantern Spoony to show up.

While I equate Doug Walker on about the same level as a popular, funny comedian you see on TV, I equate Spoony with that funny, wacky friend you enjoy going out and spending the afternoon with. He’s much more personable than Doug, and that’s why I just like him better, both as his work and as a person overall.

DC Universe Online is so much fun.  Yeah it has it’s glitches but still a ton of fun and it is easy to get into. Everyone should give it a try considering it’s free right now.

How many geek penises just went erect at the thought of the Dark Knight duking it out with the world’s maddest scientist, the man so insane they put it in his name?

    • Anonymous

I dunno, I already kind of blew my geek wad watching an elderly batman beat the crap out of Superman in The Dark Knight Returns (NOT a fan of Superman!).  After seeing that, it’s kind of hard for anything else to turn my geek on so verily…I just realized how creepy all this is.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ICDHG7TLTN6JVK6JMK3TKQFXKQ Mike Wallace

Too bad the rest of TDKR was such tripe.

The thing is I’m tired of Batman being depicted as a barely functional sociopath. To me this reeks of cynical writers who – deep down – hate superheroes, and would rather be writing gruesome noir “Men’s Action” stories from the 40’s, where the men all drink hard liquor without ill effect and the women are all autassassinophiliacs.

I like the Animated Series Batman, where he’s determined and strong-willed but still very much molded by the tragic events of his childhood, that the pain is still there and he uses that to drive him, instead of those other writers who think its some blind, barely controlled rage that has him teetering over the edge of turning into a serial killer himself.

Hell, even the Arkham Asylum/City games do it that way. Paul Dini “gets it” in my opinion.

The recent movies – Batman Begins and The Darkn Knight – completely miss the point. It starts out strong, but by The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne has lost sight of why he does what he does and seems to want to just get on with his life, all of the motivation he had just vanishes and it’s like he’s dragging his heels until his retirement hits.

        • Anonymous

I kept forgetting that batman was even IN The Dark Knight…or maybe I did that on purpose just to get his stupid, stupid voice out of my head.  It’s crap like that that makes me appreciate The Animated Series.  Batman, Two-Face, Joker, god, even Alfred.  Everything and everyone in that movie made me think “I have to accept it.  I’m getting old.  Time to stick with the stuff I already love and leave the new stuff to the kids.”

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ICDHG7TLTN6JVK6JMK3TKQFXKQ Mike Wallace

            I’ll drink to that, man.

There was very little “good” about Batman in The Dark Knight. The costume was wrong, the voice was wrong, the lighting was wrong, the dialogue was wrong. The movie spent so much time making the Joker look good that Batman is just kind of there, waiting for a bus.

          • Anonymous

Dear gods…you know how very few people actually understand that?

            Good job.

          • Anonymous

Depressing (and disturbing) how these new movies are the new “standard” for today’s youth, isn’t it?

THIS is the Batman they’re going to have to grow up with?  That’s…this is…I…you know, even growing up with reruns of the campy Adam West series at least built character for me (a good “POW!” will do that!).  And the Tim Burton films added to that character, and of course, The Animated Series solidified that character and sticks with me to this day. But these new Batman movies?

Ugh.  UGH!  If the film has no character, then it has no character to spread to the audience. It makes them as bland as the product.  These kids are going to go on thinking THIS is Batman.  Mr. Smokes 20-a-day and is as intimidating as the goth kid in an art class.  Just because the movie has some “cool action scenes”, doesn’t mean it’s a good Batman movie…simple fun, sure, whatever floats your boat, but in 2009, someone in one of my college classes said “The Dark Knight is a better action movie than Die Hard”.

…my brain still hurts.  Opinions are one thing, opinions are fine, but when you say a statement like that as a *fact* with *nothing* to support it, it just makes you look like a damn fool.  In fact, my immediate reaction was “You’re fresh out of High School, aren’t you?”.  And I was right.

See, better Batman gave me character, and the ability to read character…god, went on bit of a rant there, but I have a saying: STUPID HURTS!  And today’s Batman hurts very much indeed!  Ooooh, if anyone needs me, I’ll be in the Angry Dome!  Watching The Animated Series!  I think a little Two-Face will help cheer me up.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ICDHG7TLTN6JVK6JMK3TKQFXKQ Mike Wallace

Oh wow, they preferred The Dark Knight over Die Hard? That guy has got to see a movie.

Here’s the conclusion I’ve come up with about the Batman. When Frank Miller released The Dark Knight Returns, it did indeed reinvent Batman as a “darker, grittier” character. But that wasn’t the whole story. The truth was he became a jock, an aggressive football kind of jock.

And that made it “okay” to like him, because he wasn’t a nerd in a costume, he was a beefed up bully in a sports uniform, cheered and encouraged to be as mean as he could be to win one for the team. A generation of nerds who grew up loving Batman (and other heroes) used this opportunity to “come out” about their hobby.

But we don’t need that Batman. These days it’s not only okay to be proud of our geekiness, we’re almost admired for having the balls to love something so campy, cheesey, and corny as costumed superheroes. Batman can exist in a gothic setting and not have to “jock himself up” to be a good read. He doesn’t need an excuse anymore. He can feel guilty, torn, tragic, and yet still be heroic. He can believe in doing the right thing, and still fight from the shadows. He can face serial killers and maniacs without being one himself.

And we want those kinds of heroes again.

Wow that’s the craziest glitch I have seen on that game! I play DC Universe all the time and I never experienced anything like that. Apparently Superman was one step ahead and immediately banished Dr. Insano to the Phantom Zone.

  • Anonymous

That’s happened to me in just about every MMO I’ve played. Warcraft has had occasional problems with it after major patches, especially early on.

Personally, I like occasional glitches like that. It must shatter the sanity of the character it happens to… one minute everything is normal, and the next he’s falling through the world and realizes that ALL OF REALITY IS A LIE!!! Luckily, Insano doesn’t have any sanity to shatter.

I need to thank you Spoony.
My character was also trapped like that, since he can fly I stopped falling, thought I had just to report it and switched character asking mods for help. Today I watched this video, it turned out that mods didn’t move my character from below but thanks to you I knew that I just had to wait.

I had this same issue, a fix I found was recalling to the base through the map. Not the least glichey game I’ve ever played I’ll say that.

This reminds me of the time that I was playing WoW and attempted to hearth into town at one point. I ended-up in the middle of a vast and empty ocean. There was no land anywhere and I was undetectable on the map, so I could only let myself die from fatigue. By then, I was better-off just ghosting to town. :-P

Be honest people, does anyone actually PLAY the superhero side? No? I guess villain is the new anti-hero.

    • Anonymous

People who play hero side play City of Heroes, people who play villains play DCUO.  People who play … no, no one plays Champions Online.

      • Anonymous

“People who play … no, no one plays Champions Online.”

..Except for all of the people who play Champions Online.

wow, that’s one hell of a villain learning curve…
drop to your death then we’ll talk promotion

  • Anonymous

I hate to say it Spoony, but that’s what you get for playing one of the WORST MMOs on the current market right now. DCUO is PURE SHIT, at the very bottom of superhero MMOs and near it for ANY MMO.

Honestly, you should play Champions Online if you want a decent game.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6V2JL7RMZ7EYWDDWRYC7BPG6KU david r

I like it myself. At least it’s different from WoW clone x and legitimately tries to do something new.

I’ve been watching all the gameplay videos of ToR and it really just looks like WoW with new bells and whistles and more story emphasis.

      • http://twitter.com/0CoffeeBlack0 Sean Closson

I have been enjoying it, despite their massive server problems for their free 2 play launch it’s been pretty good. Of course I play it on the PC not the PS3 so there may be some glitches in the console version that aren’t in the PC one. For the most part I like it, I played Champions Online for a while and it was fun, but I didn’t find it nearly as enjoyable as DCUO. The Graphics are better in DCUO, the environments are way bigger and more intricate, and the combat system is much more that of an action game, which is what I really wanted out of a superhero MMO anyway, and considering that it is more action based, it feels less repetitive when you are doing missions that are more grindy missions, CO just feels grindy when you are playing those missions.

The only thing I can say for sure that Champions Online and City of Heroes have over DCUO is the depth of their character customization options.

    • Anonymous

I played the game during its P2P run, and I liked it. Good setting, interesting mechanics, almost more of a MMO sandbox game with character progression than a true MMORPG. Haven’t been able to get online since it went F2P, but then I’ve only tried once; I’ve been pretty busy with Uncharted 3 and planning my wedding, so I’ve been a little preoccupied for DCUO. I plan to get into it again soon, though.

  • Nagneto Lives

    FOR SIENCE!!!

  • Anonymous

Spoony, just started that game myself a couple days ago.  That glitch tends to happen when the server is overpopulated.  The game actually realizes it’s happening when you fall low enough and it will teleport you back to the top, so when it happens just let yourself fall.

  • Anonymous

Hey Spoony, that glitch tends to happen when the game is overpopulated, which is 24/7 since it just went free.  As you saw at the end there if you just let yourself fall far enough you’ll always pop back up to the top.

  • Anonymous

Thank ya. I’m glad to know I’m not alone in this view.

  • Aquila

You gotta open the map screen and select “Warp Rally”. It puts you in the nearest rally point, which usually fixes that glitch.

But yeah, the game is buggy as hell sometimes. Especially since user numbers have increased by about 1000% after going free to play. So…. yeah.

  • Raziel Raven

Geez, Spoony, Insano totally Buckaroo Banzai’ed on that thing. Seriously, must have been a nice trip through the Ninth Dimension!

Downloaded it off of Steam for my laptop. Would’ve played already, but for some reason it’s taking forever to install and update. Anyway, it’ll be done soon by the look of it; can’t wait to seek out Dr. Insano!

    • Anonymous

Unless he is also playing on the PC version, I don’t think you will be able to find him since both platforms have different servers. :(

Ok so, i finally installed the updates after numerous “connection lost” screens. I made my characters (one of which i have to re-make) and when trying to log in, it either stays on a wonder woman screen for like seven hours or it says “log in list 3580″ and it counts down. As a student for game design, this is a big fail. They should account for massive traffic. Battlefield bad COmpany 2 did this too.  UGH get it right people!

ps: If i have to re-make my guy, can i use the same name or will be be “in use” forever?

    • Anonymous

Deleting the character will free the name for anyone to use.. but you’ll be fine in most cases.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DUX4VZ34MKRP63ZUCQBCVGR4JM Jason

The same thing happen to me and my hero American Ace use to be a fighter pilot what happen was that I was entering the safe house and loading screen would not end so I reboot my computer log back in then wham stuck in a big gray place then I go tell my brother I’m in the spaces between spaces, but unlike what happen to you my guy just kept falling until he landed in the safe house.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Rosenbaum/100001387887487 George Rosenbaum

This just looks like the result of incompetent management. It happens way too often: some producer gets a ‘great idea’ in his head, and will try to push his ill informed idea into the game.

I can see the conversation now…

Producer: “Strange, this game isn’t selling well. What if we made it free to play? Yeah, it worked for Valve, so it will work for us.”

Developer: “Uhhh, this game isn’t nearly as stable or robust as TF2. If we make it free to play, the traffic rate will skyrocket past anything this game was designed to handle. It might even break the skybox.”

Producer: “ARE YOU TELLING ME THIS TEAM MADE A HALF-ASS GAME?!”

Developer: “No, we did everything we could with the time frame we were given. TF2 took 9 years to develop, and we didn’t have nearly that kind o-(gets cut off)”

Producer: “HOW DARE YOU CHEAT THIS COMPANY! I WANT YOU WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK TO FIX THIS PROBLEM!”

Developer: “Please calm down and listen, what your asking for is much harder than you think.”

Producer: “I DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANY MORE OF THIS! YOU HAVE ONE MONTH! DON’T REPORT TO ME UNTIL YOU DO YOUR JOB RIGHT!”

And that’s how the industry works!

  • http://twitter.com/matsugawa Roland M J Ziemke

I think you may well have given Mike’s Game Glitches a run for its money.

Also, you’ve outdorked me: The ripple effect initially made me thin of the Predator, but you one-upped me with the Doctor Who theme.

I remember one time playing GTA San Andreas where something very similar to that happened to me only when the game teleported me back to the surface i was way out in the middle of the ocean and it took me at least a half hour to swim back to the city

Can’t imagine what the controls are like on the PS3. I kind of like the more direct, action-oriented play style, if nothing else.

Not sure if “side-kick” point of view works, though.

I wish Champions Online hadn’t gone down-hill like it has.

  • Anonymous

Obviously, the game is too afraid of Dr Insano to let him stand on solid ground

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_X67TCVAQ7UP3STL5QGVQAGLHII Brian

Oh, yes.  I’m on DC Universe Online now as well.  I have two characters, one male and one female, Blue Magician and Sgt Sparks, both in the PVP world if that makes a difference.  I go by WhiteRoseBrian on the PlayStation Network.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m unable to play this (or any other) of Spoony’s clips
since Sunday. When I try to start one up, the screen goes black and a text message says:
    “advertisement playing”.
Well, it keeps on playing FOREVER!
What’s wrong? Is it me? I mean my computer? I noticed that others have left comments here
AFTER it went tits up for me, so I would guess that this problem has only affected me…

Funnily enough this video convinced me to give this game a try, just so I could see if this happened to me xD Kinda sad it didn’t :P

Only other Superhero MMORPG I’ve played is Champion’s Online, and as far as ftp mmorpgs go for hat I’ve done up to about lv 15 it isn’t that bad xD More fun than certain other games to say the least, but I’m not much a fan of those WoW-style hotkey games anyway…

The way i fixed that problem when it happened to me was by warping to the main villain hq and leaving and then warping back to gotham city

At least in GTA you only fall for like 3 seconds before you spawn back up on the surface. And you really have to work before finding any fall through floor glitches.
