Vlog 10-19-12 – Paranormal Activity 4 & Sinister

The Spoony One | Oct 20 2012 | more notation(s) |

Part 1 – Paranormal Activity 4

Part 2 – Sinister

Prepare for another long and rambling muse on the nature of horror movies, why we’re frightened by them, and eventually, what I thought of Paranormal Activity 4 and Sinister.

Edit: Rest assured, I shall not employ the screamer again.

Two minutes in… you bastard! WELP. Paying attention now, I can tell you that.

    • PRadz

I figured something like that would be coming. Thank you, I won’t be watching now.

  • http://twitter.com/dmh3000 David Herbert

    Welp, now I’m awake. Thanks.

    • capthavic

Ditto, so much for going back to sleep anytime soon….

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1325564147 Dan Nicholson

Pray you didn’t have headphones on.

So much for that pair of pants.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cody-Ward/100001744038901 Cody Ward

The first time, I think I had an angina attack. Heh… angina…

        • John Crane

That too and I think that I dont need sleep anymore

        • http://www.facebook.com/admiralen1 Arvid Helghe

i had speakers on, at 03 at night

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=40308084 Greg Hayward

Am I remembering wrong or did Spoony like Drag Me to Hell? I could have sworn that he did. And that movie is almost entirely jump scares. Maybe I’ll have to go rewatch that review after this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Winkuru Antti Saavalainen

He did. I haven’t watched the film myself but didn’t it have Evil Dead type of stuff in it so there’s that (correct if i’m wrong)

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=40308084 Greg Hayward

I have seen it, and it was decent because I enjoyed the camp. I can’t compare it to Evil Dead though, because I haven’t seen that. (I know, shoot me now. I haven’t seen Terminator 2 or Back to the Future 2&3 either)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Panzergoob Jon Fite

    HOLY FUCK! Goddammit Spoony!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jordan-Staley/100000236712805 Jordan Staley

Gah! Fuck you! I hate screamers! But in all fairness you got me. Point made.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jordan-Staley/100000236712805 Jordan Staley

Also I love how the brief screamer at the end illustrated the other point about earning a jump scare by building tension. For the rest of the review (especially when you were talking about how if they keep doing it it will be annoying (I thought you might do it again right there to make a point) I was waiting fot it to happen again. Dreading it, And then, even though I saw it oming once the music started BAM! Masterfully played. Just, please. Don’t do it again.Jesus.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.wooten.3 Jonathan Wooten

Jesus christ. I had my headset on and turned up because Im eating chips while listening. Thanks for the perma hearing damage Spoony haha.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mads-Bolding-Fenger-Poulsen/1513209391 Mads Bolding Fenger Poulsen

From that we can deduce that chips are bad for one’s hearing as well as for one’s physical condition!

      • http://www.facebook.com/CannonPersonal Jacob Kilner

Wouldn’t hearing come under; physical condition?

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mads-Bolding-Fenger-Poulsen/1513209391 Mads Bolding Fenger Poulsen

That’s up to definition, but you definitely could.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ryan.liguori.9 Ryan Liguori

Yeah, it’s not 3:30 in the morning over here or anything. Dick. Fucking brilliantly played, though, just going on like nothing’s happened. You have my respect.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alexandruioan.samson Alexandru Ioan Samson

Also, I want that Bebop tee.

  • http://twitter.com/corpsealot Stephen Korinis

If I could slap you I would.

  • http://twitter.com/MaceLight Krista

fuck you, why would you do that

  • http://twitter.com/Eniacc Eniac

    *looks at comments*
    …well better not watch then

    • http://twitter.com/TheMadWhitaker Aaron Bourque

No, you can watch, just be prepared to turn the volume low about 2 minutes in on the first vid (and shut it off before the final few seconds).

      • http://twitter.com/Eniacc Eniac

Yeah I watched it already, managed to dodge the first time thanks to the comments, the last one got me. =I

    • http://www.facebook.com/infit4 Nick Godbout

I really want to hear what Spoony has to say about these two movies…but fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. The comments are totally convincing me that it’s not worth it.

  • thehivemind33

Dammit Noah, I had headphones on.
Ah well, after I change my pants I’ll continue watching!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.wooten.3 Jonathan Wooten

Haha so did I. I had powdery cheese from Dorritos on my left hand and had just picked up my drink in my right when that went off so I wasnt about to touch my headset. Just violently flung my head backwards for them to come off. Some of those images were creepy as hell too

      • thehivemind33

I’m glad he didn’t go for the intense flashing image crap, but then again he was just trying to make a point about jump scares and not make us flee from our computers due to some hidden natural instinct to run from things that are horrifying to at least two of our five senses at the same time.

  • http://twitter.com/StefaNonsense Stefan Eremia

    God-the-fuck-damn-it Spoony, shit!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Tenks.Brief William Blevins

JEBUS the one time i decide to listen with my head phones XD

  • http://twitter.com/LordSMAF Markus

Gah! Well, if you wanted to illustrate how people will be pissed at jump-scares I think you illustrated THAT very well.

Also, I want that Dune thong…

  • http://sbkmulletman.deviantart.com/ sbkMulletMan

SPOONY, YOU LOVEABLE ASSHOLE! Dammit, that was GOOD! I had headphones on and everything. See, now that’s how you make a point!

Jump-scares may suck for horror, but man, they can be good for comedy. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to stop laughing and try to watch the rest of the video. Not even 90 seconds in, god damn.

  • http://twitter.com/corpsealot Stephen Korinis

By the way Spoony, just about every camera can pick up infrared, including the one you recorded this with. Point your remote at it and hit a button. You’ll see the infrared lights.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vaughan-MacDonald/100000473507885 Vaughan MacDonald

Spoony, you asshole! I wasn’t really paying attention to my computer when you did that XD

  • http://twitter.com/Das_Bass Das_Bass

Waking up your roommate at 4:30am with a loud yelp. You fucker, you made your point you goofball.

  • Gun Man

Holy–!! Screw you too spoony!! Jeez! I’m damned near deaf thanks to that!

  • MFlorian

    SON. OF. A. BITCH.

  • thehivemind33

The worst part about it was that I have this slight paranoia that this exact thing is going to happen in videos that talk about jump scares or screamers…
The ONE time I let my guard down, it happens.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=680148907 Viktor Segerbäck

I had the exact same case… I’ll just take a break from spoony for the day xD

  • http://www.facebook.com/Panzergoob Jon Fite

Dammit! Did you REALLY need to do it twice!?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=680148907 Viktor Segerbäck

I’m too afraid to watch the rest of the video now. Damn it… This was sounding to be so interesting.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jesus-Angel-Garza/518240978 Jesus Angel Garza

That was the point. Using his own examples, Spoony actually put us in a state of fear because we knew a second was coming, just didn’t know when.

        • Pinup Ghoul

Behold, the only time jump scares actually cause fear! Brilliant.
          Annoying and painful, but brilliant!

    • pretzels

He foreshadowed it too. Fool me twice, shame on me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Fangsway Kent Hall

I missed the first one visually cause i had the window in the back ground. but i was getting up and repositioning my laptop at the end and nearly threw the bloody thing. well played spoony. you got me

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nagneto-Lives/100002330956610 Nagneto Lives

People bitching about the screamer are ALMOST missing the point. That being said, was anybody else waiting in fearful anticipation that he would do it a second time?

    • http://sbkmulletman.deviantart.com/ sbkMulletMan

I had my volume down to a near-whisper just in case he would. And luckily I read ahead to find he did it again at the end, so I was prepared.

I just know Spoony has the biggest grin of triumph on his face after all this.

    • http://twitter.com/corpsealot Stephen Korinis

Didn’t miss the point. The point hit me in the face well and good enough. ;)

    • PRadz

The point is that it was completely unnecessary, I’m sure anybody watching a review about Paranormal Activity 4 knows what a jump scare is – there was no need to illustrate it.

  • http://twitter.com/DarkSeraphim28 Samantha DeShong

You son of a-! Still, great vlog. I always enjoy these :) I like hearing your takes on these movies. Fantastic job…bastard hehe

  • marabackman

Dammit, Spoony! I felt that scream in my lower back o.O

  • http://twitter.com/themadfiles Maestro

And now I’m wide awake 0_0

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nathan-D-Crumpler/1426356581 Nathan D. Crumpler

The first one was to prove your point, the second one was to be a douche. Thanks douche.

  • GregoriusTheBrown

AAAAH! Horrific images! Quick, scroll down!!! AAAAAH! Upside-down Spoony! AAAAAH!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matei-Nicolaescu/100000226813442 Matei Nicolaescu

      AAAAH, PAAANIC!!!!

    • Malidictus

      I love upside-down Spoony, personally :)

  • http://djcmep.blogspot.com/ DJ CmeP

Don’t ever fucking do that again.

  • MFlorian

Was the second time really necessary? …………………was the FIRST TIME really necessary?

    • http://www.facebook.com/niQboy Nico Havia

There’s a second time? I’m reading the comments while watching the video. Fuck this I’m turning it off

      • Guest

Sorry to spiol, but its right at the end, the very end.

    • http://twitter.com/GamesSaveLives silbmaerto

  • Guest

FUUUUU you got me ya bastard. Although it did prove the point. Although I knew this for years….ugh fuck my cheeks actually turned red.

  • http://twitter.com/WarPainterBrian War Painter Brian

Actually Spoony, Netflix has Audition up for streaming. So lucky us right?

  • DeathsHead419

Huh, a piano being stuffed with dynamite and blown up in his attic. So it’s infested with Mythbusters?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aaron-Porter/707545530 Aaron Porter

I looked in youtube, Kinect dots can be seen if you turn lights of and use any night shoot mode on even cheap video cameras. Try it spoony see if they truthful.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rick-van-Hoof/100002579891733 Rick van Hoof

I fucking hate jumpscares. I trusted you, Spoony. I trusted you wouldn’t stoop so low (but you made your point).

  • Rafael Campos

    Son of a ….

  • Lukas

At which minute is the second jump scare?

    • MFlorian

The very last moment of the first video.

  • Zejex

You need to make a movie Noah, seems like you are the only one out there with a sense to make a decent one these days.

  • Turcano

I don’t know what’s worse: doing the screamer thing twice, or not putting the face at the end of The Madness of Roland in either of them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rick-van-Hoof/100002579891733 Rick van Hoof

I know the point of jumpscares already, I know them by heart. And now I can’t realy watch the rest of the review, because of the anticipation. Can anyone tell me if and when second or third jumpscares will come? Otherwise I think I’ll skip these 2 video’s. Sorry, Spoony, my heart isn’t as solid as yours.

    • Turcano

The second one is at the very end of the first video, right after the production screen.

  • adamfox

Katie going to the hospital was just a ruse of the cult to get robbie in the house with hunter. robbie had been trained by the cult to relate to hunter and gradually win him into accepting his real identity when he was ready. for all we know the cult called the ambulance and either katie played sick and then just escaped from the hospital or the cult controls the hospital anyways. or just brainwashed them when they came.

  • http://twitter.com/Das_Bass Das_Bass

You remind me of when they gave me an IV when I had surgery. They stuck it in wrong and it hurt like a bitch….now I hate hospitals even more…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Grzegorz-Wojtczyk/100000046280578 Grzegorz Wojtczyk

    R.I.P. headphone users.

    • http://twitter.com/Ranting_Phoenix Ranting Phoenix

Yeah. Especially when you weren’t expecting it.

      • http://twitter.com/VictuzPL Wiktor Jankowiak

I wasn’t. Also I made him louder literally 5 seconds before that because my headset has an issue where below a certain level of sound I can only hear the left channel.
Well since I don’t want to scare the shit out of my family members guess I won’t watch it :C

        • Zipper Dragon

          Spooney’s such a hypacrit. ^_^ I love it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/infit4 Nick Godbout

I really, REALLY don’t want to watch these vlogs now…

Yeah, I got ear raped with headphones on even though I was thinking “Noah isn’t really going to blare something really loud is he……?”

Not scary, just irritating, like the point he was trying to illustrate, heh.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Bentley2210 Paul Bentley

      Yep. Pain.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002546596498 Andy Castaneda

As I remember, you have some heart problems, Noah. I have heart problems from my hyperthyroidism too.
You’re lucky I just increased my prescription, man. I don’t know what the fuck would have happen if I was still on my old dosage.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matei-Nicolaescu/100000226813442 Matei Nicolaescu

god damn it i did not watch the entire video after the first scare and when i wanted 2 turn to the other video another jump scare… touchey Spoony bastard :)

  • Luke Vyner

Paranormal activity 4: “Well i guess i should wrap this up” ….50 mins later…. LOL love your videos spoony

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matei-Nicolaescu/100000226813442 Matei Nicolaescu

Is there a jump scare in the second part?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Horobin/100000917734895 Chris Horobin

now why would you think that?

    • Adrian Schneider

There isn’t, fortunately. I had my finger on the mute key the whole time but never needed it.

Seriously Spoons, ow. Any chance of a version of the videos without that shit, in case we ever want to re-watch this? Because it’s 2+ hours of awesome, but… just no way.

  • http://twitter.com/AROAH Marcus Bresberg

In regards to the PA4 video, the first jump scare is just before 2 minutes in. The second one is right at the end of the video, after he’s done talking. There, just skip to 3 minutes and stop the video early.

    • http://twitter.com/Okanehira Okanehira

Thats my point, spoony probably thought “hurr this will be funny, this will prove my point”

Now, no-one will repeat view this video and they will skip sections of it to avoid that stupid shit, he is hurting himself.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Kaufman/1811270839 Ryan Kaufman

        Calm down, jesus.

        • http://twitter.com/Ishanji Ishanji

He’s just supporting Spoony’s point that those kind of tricks piss you off more than they scare you, give him a break ;p

    • ShadeFawks

I wouldn’t call those jump scares, those are just straight up screamers. I can handle a jump scare, but all the noise, noise, noise, NOISE!

  • John Shepard

    Good thing i wasn’t wearing headphones….

  • TOP2NE1

Fuck yeah!! Are we talking asian horror now? In addition to Spoony’s recommendations I’d say people should go watch A Tale of Two Sisters (korean version).

Also watch Three… Extremes. They’re three horror short horror segments by three different directors from China, Japan, and Korea. The Japanese segment is by Takashi Miike, who Spoony just praised. The Korean segment is by Park Chan-wook, the director of Oldboy.

Speaking of Park Chan-wook, people should also keep an eye out for Stoker (2013), his first English language film. And for those who have seen Oldboy, Spike Lee is coming out with an American remake in 2013 as well… I can definitely say that it is going to be a movie.

  • Akasen

You know, there’s a joke I’ve heard in regards to Amnesia the Dark Descent. Basically, it amounts to “What if Frictional Games made a game where it made you believe there was a monster and by the end there was never anything at all?” which amounts to a game that makes you scared because of the fear of the unknown.

  • Kinigget

to actually discuss what Spoony *said* in this video, I completely agree with him on all points. the best kind of horror is anticipation, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I’m also a fan of a more surreal kind of horror, where reality starts breaking down around you and nothing makes sense anymore. and yes, being startled is not the same as being scared, and neither is being disgusted, except when the revulsion is used as a means to an end.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jean-Francois-Glaude/665595468 Jean-Francois Glaude

Well .. 2 minutes in … 1 hour left listening with audio off …… ;) lol (man i knew he’d to that lol)

  • mik_robertson

If the rest of this video was Spoony sitting in the chair doing nothing then we all would have just had the Paranormal Activity experience. A lot of nothing punctuated by scary Where’s Waldo (love that term) and jump scares.

  • Aleksander Adamkiewicz

i want to kill you with a spoon for the screamer. i got your point though

  • http://www.facebook.com/tolgyfaszegi.istvan Tölgyfaszegi István

I saw Infection, it was awesome :)

  • http://twitter.com/ThatBeardguy Guillaume P.

    I fucking hate you. XD

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1117003811 Isak Lindhé

You should watch Marble Hornets. The only instance where Found footage has worked really good IMO. with the arguable exeption of the blair witch project.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Feyjin Olga Zawalak

Oh great Spoony… I hate you for the screamers… X__x’

  • http://twitter.com/sudburymagician James Thomas

Nearly dropped it on my goddamn foot!

Man, that’d sucked to explain at A&E

Cut the hair man. You are slowly starting to resemble Snape.

  • http://twitter.com/Bolt_V3 Andrew Joyce

Fuck you, Spoony. I had headphones on, you son of a bitch. HEAD. PHONES.

I’m already partially deaf you cock sucker, are you trying to finish the god damned job?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=655701905 Corey Schaff

Aw, Miles couldn’t be here :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=655701905 Corey Schaff

Oh and man, I think we need to start an Ad-free Spoony Experiment Fundraiser or something; that Puma Ad popup is really annoying.

  • http://twitter.com/DuneBlythe Dune Blythe

    Ow, my freakin’ ears!

  • http://twitter.com/zodd88 Guido Palombi

I think the quote from hitchcock you were referring to was the distinction between shock and suspense:
If there are two guys sitting to a table talking, and all of a sudden a bomb explodes, killing them, it is a shock…but if we see that someone puts the bomb under the table beofre, there is suspense because no one knows when the bomb is going to blow up.

  • http://twitter.com/SantaPrime Christopher Miles

I see the manly mane of the Spoony is back in all its glory. This a good omen no?

  • CalamityCorp

Spoony, you asshole. Don’t — EVER — do that again. Thanks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Petersen/542275525 Michael Petersen

Thank god jump scares no longer affect me, otherwise those two jump scares would’ve freaked me out…

  • PeaTearGryfin

Advise for anybody about to watch the PA4 video: Make sure you use the bathroom first and don’t wear headphones.

  • Solstafir

I will fucking find you and I will fucking stab you for that first video.
Also thanks for the recommendations at the end of your sinister vlog: Saw a few of them and gonna check the ones out I haven’t seen which you mentioned.

  • casval0287

damn this slow ass internet connection. its impossible to watch any of your videos Spoony. the buffering on this player is slower then a snail trying to crawl up a hill made of ice. the blip player i can get to work passably but this player just won’t buffer over time. i’m stuck watching your stuff on youtube, and i don’t want to do that cus you probably don’t get paid from those views anymore.

  • Reaki

Fuck you Spoony, if you didnt want me to watch your videos, just put it in the disclaimer. What the fuck did you prove? That your obvious point that jump scares are cheap and easy to do is true? Well congratulations! You just proved something that everyone and their dog knows.

Ruined a shirt with coffee thanks to you, so fuck you once again.

  • Mikayla Beyer

Spoony, one new movie that I think you would L-O-V-E down to its shoes is “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” I know it looks girly, I know it has Hermione, but remembering how much you liked Scott Pilgrim, I know you would think great things of this movie, and I am ready to see you review another movie you really love. That said, these vlogs made me jump and shriek–thanks for the great work!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Francisco-Salazar/100001664460428 Francisco Salazar

God I hate Springboard. I have to sit at my desk for 2 hours to watch a stuttering 1 hour video. No mobile support, no way to download the video… I don’t know if these long videos are worth the headache.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.w.hastings.5 Joshua William Hastings

Curse you, Spoony, though, you do have a point. I was hoping to cover the elements of fear in regards to tabletop games at some point.

  • Caleb Warner

Honestly, I am glad for the jump scares, both of them. I think they illustrated the point well (even if we were the test audience). The first one was obnoxious but by no means scary, HOWEVER it set us up to spend the entire video dreading the second. It served to give us an example of the suspense you spoke about with the knife, how something that would otherwise not be at all frightening can become so because we spend time anticipating its return. So, even with a mild headache due to the volume, I’m glad for the lesson provided.

    • http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/cornbredx/ CornBRED-X

Ya, it’s the sword of Damocles in a way. Or The pit and the Pendulum. The best ones are when you know it’s going to happen but have no idea when the sword will fall.

It boggles me that people don’t know how to use it anymore as it’s an easy thing to do and it can be fine if used right. Seems like these days most film makers don’t understand that, when it comes to suspense, more IS WORSE! Unless your target audience maybe is 13 year old girls that will scream about anything fairly easily.

      • Caleb Warner

I’ve found the most effective jump-scares to actually be when used outside of their genre. In the Swedish production of The Girl Who Played With Fire, for instance. As a totally unexpected item, they work their magic, the problem is that they have become common fare and are more than a little predictable thanks to the tradition of having the musical score allude to them early.

    • http://twitter.com/zodd88 Guido Palombi

That’s why after the first jumpscare I watched the rest of the video at 40% of the volume, point made indeed…

  • http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/cornbredx/ CornBRED-X

Edit: Fair warning- my comment has minor spoilers for this video.

God dammit Spoony. The jump scare in there… and through the whole thing I was like “He’s totally going to do it again, probably at the end, because Spoony is an asshole and so am I and that’s what I would do” and then that’s what you did.

Fuck you for that Spoony haha

  • OgdruJahad

Spoony raises a good point. Horror is about antici…

    … pation.

    • zhellas

      So scary!

  • Whoyagonnaspoon

    Awesome t-shirt <3

  • doresh

Jump scares are so overdone, especially the classic “Fake jump scare quickly followed by actual jump scare”. I think it would actually be more effective nowadays to just skip the fake scare, since EVERYONE is expecting a fake scare once a character slowly walks towards something, followed by ominous music XD

  • Xandermorph

Agreed, Spoony… I can’t stand orchestral scares either… they’re not only irritating as fuck (and as you said, not really fair to the audience since they’re manipulative by their very nature) but they’re ineffective! Sure, and orchestral sting startles you, but it’s not any scarier because of it!
Remember that scene in Alien where Brett gets killed and taken up looking for the cat? The only music we get during the ENTIRE sequence (and it’s a long sequence, actually) is where the Alien is opening its mouth and inner jaws. There’s no big musical whiz-bang when those inner jaws fly out and shoot into Brett’s head, just the sound of inner jaws shooting out, skullbone crunching, and the victim screaming and wailing as he’s taken up. That’s it! 7-minute scene, probably 7 SECONDS of music, if that.
Same thing in the scene where the chestburster births out of Kane – not a single solitary note of music during the ENTIRE sequence.
Alien did creepy atmosphere to utter perfection and didn’t spoil any of its best scenes with out-of-place musical stings. When it happens, it feels appropriate to what’s going on in the scene.

Did anyone notice that the videos were taken from skype chats and such? So basically the kid in the friend-zone is trying to spy on the whole family. It’s creepy and kinda wrong.

  • Uribosco

I agree with most of those plot holes, but not the bunk bed thing. I used to beg my parents for a bunk bed so that I could climb around on it. It was really fun when I had my friends over and we always argued about who would sleep where.

  • Tristan Pendergrass

I never even gave the Saw movies a chance. Then I watched Welshy’s reviews, and based on that I gave it another try. Now I wouldn’t say I love them, but I fully realize that they are way more intelligent than I or basically any movie critic gives them credit for.

All cameras are capable of taking IR imaging, but you need to remove the polarizing filter. The best way to do it is to take an old PS-EYE Camera and mess with it. There’s a tutorial on how to pick up IR with it on Instructibles specially used for making touch-surface tables and IR photography.
    Much cheaper =D

Question. Do you apply this rule too video games? If so dead space is not scary since it’s all gore and jump scares. Unlike better horror games.

Are the videos a little unfocused?

What was the point in that? I like to re-watch your videos over and over but now i’ll skip these.

Really pointless, and i’m not just mad at you using a fucking “screamer” but now everyone is watching the rest of your review with the volume down and on guard, and not really listening – i’m 10 minutes in and i’m still so on guard i can;t recall a word.

In all honestly, I barely noticed the screamer thing; don’t know if I’m just that jaded or what; I was even using earbuds at the time. Guess it could be that I’m used to sudden loud incoherent screaming due to my tech support job *shrug*

Well, I guess you’ve proved your point, Spoony. Neither jump scares were scary, they just made me go “Turn the fucking volume down, damnit!”, so yeah, point made. Never do it again.

I miss the kind of horror movies like The Thing brought to the screen. It wasn’ scary because of monsters jumping out at the characters going “a-boogy-woogy-bloo!”, it was scary because of Kurt Russel and the rest walking around on eggshells being paranoid about eachother.

Or Hitchcocks The Birds, sweet merciful, it was months since the last time I saw it and I still jump when a bird cries unexpectedly when I’m walking outside.

  • Renaissance_nerd

SAW 1 is the perfect example of the jump scare done right. Each scene builds tension and pays off with the sudden startle.

If you want to see jump scares done right watch SAW 1

Seriously, there is nothing that kills my suspension of disbelief faster than when people (parents and villains especially) act completely and utterly idiotic. I mean, it be OK if done in the proper context like in TLoZ:OoT, when all Zelda has to support that Ganondorf is evil are some nightmares (and that he looks evil), which is understandable since she’s, like, ten. Then in the fanfilm Hero of Time they do the exact same thing . . . except Zelda is around seventeen and is in possession of the Triforce of Wisdom. If someone tells you something while in possesion of an object that makes said person wiser than anyone else YOU LISTEN TO WHAT THEY SAY!!

I’ve done the math and 20 days of straight recording at VGA quality and MPEG-4 video compression is 400MB per hour times 24 hours a day times 20 days. 190 GB. Your average laptop could hold about twice that much.

Brad is probably pretty easy to please. He does keep a lot of sodas in his fridge for about 10 years. Fortunately I didn’t have the volume up so loud so the screamers only startled me for about two seconds, and I promptly fell asleep after. Good points Spoony, I always thought jump scares were lame, but I never analyzed why myself.

Funnily enough, I never actually consider the obvious question of “how did they get the footage”. I guess I just get invested in the story, I don’t care how the footage was found, just that I’m watching it.

By the way, ‘Audition’ is a great horror film, I agree, and I know what jump scare you are talking about Spoony. I won’t spoil anything, but I was watching that film on Film 4 at about 11:30 at night, my mum had fallen asleep on the couch, and when that jump scare happened I was freaked out so badly that I had to wake my mum up and make her stay awake to finish the film with me. The noise that the guy makes in that jump scare is so bloody scary. Ugh. I also couldn’t watch the end of ‘Audition’.

Also ‘One Missed Call’ was great but the ending makes no sense to me, which is a shame. I tried to find out what it pertained to but I couldn’t find out.

Also one of my favourite Japanese horror films is ‘The Ring’. I love that film. Scares me even though I’ve seen it many times.

    my headphones

  • Charred Newt

First things first: damn your screamers, I had the headphones on, and I had just turned the volume up. But it did make me laugh afterwards for something like 10 minutes, so, point taken.
I will definitely check out the movies you recommended. I’ve seen The Thing thanks to you, and I love the hell out of that movie. Never seen Cronenberg before, but it sounds right up my alley. What I’ve always found cheap about jump-scares is that they make you afraid, but for yourself, for your immediate wellbeing. They leave a sour aftertaste, because, at least to me, they feel almost like an aggression. A slowly built atmosphere is so much more rewarding and memorable; it doesn’t make you feel like you were tricked.

Also, I now wish I didn’t have a blood test tomorrow morning. Just my luck.

    • itbegins2005

Just a heads-up: the one Cronenberg film Spoony didn’t mention, and that I ALWAYS suggest as a first-watch for anyone interested in Cronenberg, is The Fly (1986). It’s Cronenberg’s most successful mainstream film, and if you haven’t already seen it, it’s a great introduction to many of the themes the guy likes to use (like body horror).

He also did The Dead Zone (1983), which is probably his tamest horror film, but hey– it stars Christopher Walken. Doesn’t get much better than that.

      • Charred Newt

Oh, yeah, I’d completely forgotten about the Dead Zone. Which is kinda funny, ’cause I really like it.

I can listen to you ramble like this for hours man. It’s so great to play some game (without any story or narrative) and listen to you in the background. Or make the thing windowed so I also can see the video, which is even better. I wish you made more Vlogs like this!

  • Pat Hulse

I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it, but you can record 24/7 with a laptop with an application like “Vitamin D”, which uses motion detection so it only keeps recordings if something is moving in the frame. This also solves the problem of having to watch 12 hours of footage to find the one part where something happens.

I doubt the writers of PA4 knew about this, but I just wanted to say that using a laptop for a found footage film (or as a makeshift security camera in real life) is actually very easy if you know what you’re doing.

I completly agree with the jumpscares. They give you nothing but a suprise. The only thing I’m scared of when I see jumpscares in a movie is that my ears are going to bleed….
When it comes to building suspense one of my favorite directors are David Lynch. The revelation of Bob in Twin Peaks are one of the most uncomfortable and disturbing scenes in television history. The feeling of dread that’s been building up over the series, and the dread of what Bob will do is amazing. The scene starts with the skipping of a grammaphone, and when you see the scene you just hear that skipping through out… It’s uncomfortable to say the least.

  • Robert

Why are people getting so upset? It startled me as well but it wan’t that big of a deal, come on people! And I’m glad I used headphones unlike everyone else, I just take them of if I hear something that startle me.

  • Kyle Rybski

The stupid parents, or rather the trope of the characters who will find any retarded excuse, probably comes from the filmmakers themselves being believers. To them, this is how other people behave. They don’t see the difference between skepticism and denial.

    • itbegins2005

Actually, I think it kind of started with A Nightmare on Elm Street. One of the themes Wes Craven likes to explore in his film is the failure of the family unit, and one of the ways he did that in Nightmare was by featuring parents who simply don’t listen to what their children are saying– choosing to deny that their family has problems rather than facing them and dealing with them. It was an expression of guilt and denial more than stupidity, and it was perfectly appropriate in that movie. The problem is, a bunch of hack filmmakers saw how effective this was in building tension in the film, and decided to apply it to EVERY SINGLE SUPERNATURAL HORROR FILM SINCE, often to greater and greater degrees of absurdity.

There are probably earlier examples of this that you could find, but I’m pretty sure Nightmare is what turned it into such a popular horror troupe.

  • Renaissance_nerd

I’m going to completely disagree with you on SAW Spoony. The gore there is a means to an end as well. Give the series another chance and look for the psychological and philosophical elements.

  • Princess Stabbity

The original “Pulse” is so amazingly dark (and it’s on Netflix Instant Queue. People, go watch it.) and it hurts that the remake (as usual) butchered and completely missed the entire point of it. And “One Missed Call”, that is *still* one of my favorite horror movies… Oh. My. God. You mentioned “Infection”!! I thought I was one of the only people to see that. I freaking *love* that movie. My brother had a really crummy nurse that that jabbed him like crazy to take his blood. His arm was purple, angry, and horrid looking for a good while. I thought that nurse from the movie had gotten him. (And that movie was on Netflix instant queue for a good while, so maybe it’ll get rotated back in for anyone curious) Then you went and mentioned “Suspiria” and Dario Argento in passing and of course “Prince of Darkness”, argh. I need you to stop mentioning movies I like, because it makes me want to go and watch them all.

I’ve noticed someone mentioning “V/H/S” as a rec.. oh, no. Please. There’s barely anything in that anthology worth sitting through. (It is most certainly not worth paying full price to see it anywhere.)

Also, your jump scares are evil loud and I can no longer hear. Thanks. lol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alexander.m.kaminski Alexander Mikhail Kaminski

I had my volume set to a reasonable listening level while watching this using headphones, I don’t know if you checked the volume level of the jump scares compared to the volume of you talking before you posted this video but it was loud enough to seriously damage a person’s ears.

It could have been physically devastating if I had it set to the upper limit of comfort while you were talking before the scare.

Other than the physical threat they posed to my ears, I was fine with the jump scares, and enjoyed the rest of the video.

For those who want to avoid it, or adjust their volume beforehand, the first one is at 0:01:20-0:01:25, and the second one is at the end of the video (1:06:05-1:06:10).

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordan.richards.121 Jordan Richards

On your thoughts about the main character of Sinister Mr. Spoony, I disagree. I think you are reading a bit too much into it I don’t think he is as dumb as you are saying. I’m pretty sure he figured it out the patten at the ending, he as just confirming that kid was always involved with every case. As for not putting the pattern together earlier, I didn’t suspect the kids myself at first, since all the actions and murders seemed to involve heavy lifting in some form, so I just assumed it was someone else (prehaps the ghost). So I could see why the character didn’t suspect at first either.
Anyhow, you are totally right though about the ending. That last jump scare was completely unnessecary. That last pan shot was perfect and should have been left at that.
I think the writing and story was fine though, it’s just the problem with whoever was doing the soundtrack. They couldn’t just leave well enough alone.

I’m sorry man. But this really pissed me off. After the first jump scare, i paused and checked the coments. Apparantly there was one more. This is just shitty. That second jump scare is the first thing to make me call Spoony an asshole.

Of course I instantly forgave him when I scrolled down and saw him upside down.

  • likalaruku

    Hey Fabio-Spoony.

PA4: Totally called it. Didn’t expect a double feature though.

This is why Slender isn’t a scary game. Also, jump-scares lose their power when you know where & when to expect them, so you can’t watch these movies again for years until you’ve forgotten them.

Wait, I watched the last 3 PA movies all in a row & I don’t remember any jump-scares, at least not any effective ones I didn’t see coming a mile away. I found the series relaxing, like sitting out in your backyard on a recliner on a really hot summer night; Not boring enough to stop watching, & only just entertaining enough to keep my curiosity piqued to the end.

Series had to go downhill someday, but maybe it’ll reevaluate & pick itself back up next movie. I still have hope for Romero, as long as he disembarks from the Found Footage train. Okay okay…If PA4 is emulating the style change of the ending from PA3 most people hated (didn’t really bother me), then the director likely doesn’t care what the audience wants because he knows people will see it anyway, just like George Lucas.

  • http://twitter.com/rubydynamite Ruby Dynamite

Btw, Spoony, if you’re looking for another good kind of dread-horror type of film that’s not Japanese, I *strongly* suggest Session 9. It was made quite a while ago and it has David Caruso in it, but seriously – I’ve watched the movie a grand total of once and I still can’t bring myself to watch it again because it left me feeling so unsettled. As a hardcore horror nerd, that’s definitely saying something, I think. The atmosphere is unbearably creepy and claustrophobic and there’s virtually no gore at all. Really great psychological horror flick.

Megan Is Missing is another one that I would whole-heartedly suggest. It’s a found-footage film from (I think) 2011 or this year and it’s a very intense watch.

    • likalaruku

I’ve only seen 1 good Japanese horror movie, & someone actually stole my VHS of it. It was called INFECTION (aka Kansen).

  • http://twitter.com/bmacconnell1 Ben MacConnell

You know what kind of found footage would work, and what I’d really like to see? A found footage horror film set in space. And I know you’re rolling your eyes, but from where I’m standing, setting this kind of film in space would basically solve all the limitations of the genre.

Let’s say we have a bunch of dudes on a spaceship flying to a distant star. The ship and nearly every room in it will probably have security cameras. This explains why the environment is constantly covered by footage. The ship is so far beyond the Earth that rescue or assistance is impossible. So it solves the problem of why the people wouldn’t just call the police when it became obvious weird, dangerous paranormal shit is going on. Call mission control and they’ll say, “Well, all that sounds terrible. But there’s not much we can do from back here. You’re on your own guys.”

Really the isolation of being in space is a massive theme that could be worked in. Especially during periods when the Earth’s signal is blocked by planets or something. Between the knowledge that fleeing and rescue are both impossible and the simple fear of the unknown, and this would be a great opportunity.

Heck, the crew might have cameras on their suits, meaning we’d get point of view footage from there too. I’d personally like to see a found footage movie where one of the characters has an ocular implant that covertly streams what he sees, possibly without him knowing about it. Eliminates the problem of why a character wouldn’t drop the camera when he needed to.

I wanna see something like Event Horizon, except found footage. That would be cool.

What? Spoony, you not only liked Insidious, you thought that the dancing ghost was creepy? I also can’t believe you said it barely used jump scares, did we watch the same movie? Their was gratuitous amounts of jump scares that I was able to call every time before they happened. I was officially done with the movie after the dancing ghost. From then on Insidious was no longer a horror movie and was now a comedy.

Especially as far apart as you do. You mention a second, and then… nothing. We kind of forget it, and then BAM. Sucker punched. Bravo my good man. Fan-fucking-tastic.

Quick comment on the IR, most cameras can see infrared, in fact that’s how most security cameras are lit in the dark. The $10,000 dollar ones are specific infrared cameras that record a heat map as opposed to a standard image. The camera you recorded the video on can probably see the Kinect grid (otherwise the Kinect would cost 10 grand) haven’t seen the movie so I don’t know which they were using, but I figured I’d mention it. (Try looking at a dark room with a Kinect on and you should see the grid, anyone who doesn’t have a Kinect, take your camera in a dark room, point your tv remote at it, and push a button, you should be able to see the IR LED light up)

First one I thought, god damn I hate jump scares like that, second one I just laughed because I knew it was gonna happen there, but you really did show exactly what I hate about them, sure they can be good but so many people really don’t know how to use them.

Ps. love the still of the second part.

One of the best and most unsettling horror films I’ve seen was Uzumaki. The Japanese are masters of horror – sure, there are bad Japanese horror films, but they’re about as common as good American horror films nowadays. Uzumaki is a masterpiece. Everyone should go out and seen it.

  • Emperor_Z

I’m glad to here someone else sympathized with Mika from the first movie. Everyone’s so quick to go “Aww that guy was a fucking idiot”, but without the benefit of hindsight or genre awareness, it’s pretty understandable to want to film and mess around with this mysterious force to see what will happen, not realizing what it’s capable of.

  • SergeantKozi

Audition is on Netflix instant stream. Here’s how to see it without seeing the cover.

    1. Search for some other movie
    2. Look at where the covers line up along the left side of the screen.
    3. Move your browser so that the covers are out of view.
    4. Search for audition
    5. Add it to your queue or hit play right there.
    6. If you watch it from your queue, just make sure not to hover over the title, and hit play.
    7. Profit.

    You over-complicate these things SpoonyOne.

Alfred Hitchcock: We are now having a very innocent little chat. Let’s suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, “Boom!” There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspense situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o’clock and there is a clock in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions, the same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: “You shouldn’t be talking about such trivial matters. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!”

Is every comment here going to talk about the screamers? They honestly didn’t bother me at all.

Anyways, regarding Sinister, the funny part for me about you talking about the “revelation” the main character didn’t get until the last seccond that you figured out right away in the movie, is that I figured taht shit out from the ADS. Hell, I thought “There’s probably more to it then that.” and it turns out that’s it. That’s the big plot twist. Wow.

  • http://twitter.com/CaneCraft Steinar L.K.

Using a screamer to illustrate a point about screamers being the lowest form of horror to people already on board with the notion that screamers are the lowest form of horror is not clever, nor does it help you make your point.

Not that you care, but I’m just gonna skip your videos now.

    • Garmrspor

    • Emperor_Z

I could understand skipping this video, but skipping ALL of his videos because he did one thing you didn’t like one time? That seems petty, and the declaration of such more than a little troll-like

      • Garmrspor

I figured he was playing butthurt as a joke. I HOPE that’s the case.

      • http://twitter.com/CaneCraft Steinar L.K.

I donated money to the Experiment. Then he put a screamer in a vlog.

It was a dick move. He can spend all day explaining and justifying that, but at the end of the day he was still waving his penis around. If I couldn’t trust the unspoken agreement to not be an asshole to his viewers, why should I now trust his assertion that it won’t happen again?

I don’t regret donating to the guy, but I’m not going to give any more money for the privilege of being shat on so that the creator can make a point.

And yes, my vagina is coming in quite nicely, thank you.

        • PeaTearGryfin

Really? This is the guy who told us to find all fans of Final Fantasy X and kill them. You are stunned to find out that he would be willing to troll his fans with a jump scare.

        • Emperor_Z

I think there’s just some disparity between how serious Spoony and you view screamers. To him, they’re startling and annoying, but not a seriously damaging thing. Thus, I don’t think he was trying to be an asshole to his viewers, and I think an actual promise to never employ a screamer again is more reliable than the supposed unspoken agreement.

        • Garmrspor

Oh, you’re SERIOUSLY making this big a deal out of it? It’s just a fucking jump scare!

Is there no way to make springboard load the ENTIRE video? Cause between this and YouTube I CAN’T watch most videos anymore.

I’m on a slower connection (not-quite highspeed) so letting longer videos like this load is the only way I can watch it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/zamzamih Hani Zamzami

I started watching the video and got jump scared. Then I paused the video after you mentioned a second jump scare so I can look at the comments and see when the second one is coming. I un-pause the video, only to discover it crashed to I reload the page and click ahead STRAIGHT INTO THE SAME SCARE!!! I got scared by the same bit TWICE!!! I wear high quality headphones (they are not cheap) and had the volume turned up a bit. I almost smashed it on the wall.

As the others said: Well played, Spoony, well played. You pissed me off with that scare, but I love your vlogs, so you are forgiven. Just don’t do that again … Please?

  • http://www.facebook.com/christopher.geddis.7 Christopher Geddis

This was effective on several levels it took me a little while to figure out. I note ahead of time that my biggest curse is my overactive imagination.

When I was watching this video, I was playing a game and he was playing in the background. Yes, I had headphones on. Some decent noise cancelling ones at that. So when the asshole scare at the beginning played, I didn’t even know what the fuck it was. I heard loud noise and my brain went blank. At first it startled me, but then it became a thing of “What the ever loving fuck is making that noise?!” Then it occurred to me. Spoony was talking about jump scares… and that was a… hah…ahah…funny, dickhead.

So the review goes on and I listen, but I can’t shake this feeling. This strange unsettling feeling. I chalk it up to my imagination playing tricks on me. I feel the wind from my fan blowing at my back and I can’t figure out why it is every time I feel it I think there’s someone behind me. Was it the subject material? Was it that it was late at night? What the hell was it? I couldn’t figure it out. At last the review ends but I still feel unsettled. I start to ease a bit when the second one hits. I’m actually looking at the screen this time so I see the images and whatnot and while it did make me jump a bit, it wasn’t so profound a reaction as the first one. Immediately afterward, I felt better. When I thought about why, it all made sense.

He did more than talk about the effect, he demonstrated it. The first one pissed you off but whether you realized it or not, there was something in you waiting for another one. Maybe to prove how annoying they were, maybe for a different reason. Maybe you felt like I did, perhaps you didn’t feel or expect anything at all. But it was a setup that primed something in my head; the knife hovering over the counter, the bomb under the table, the screw on the balance beam. It’s all priming.

So Spoony, I say this; Fuck you, you sadistic son of a bitch. …And well played.

  • sasa asasa

Dear Spoony. I know you probably only had the best of intentions when you came up with the idea to use screamers in your video, but JESUS CHRIST, I hope you keep your promise about never employing them again. One of the core reasons why I watch these vlogs is because they help me take my mind off stress, and… yeah, screamers aren’t exactly good relieving anxiety.

However, putting my complaints aside, the final screamer was quite brilliant. The sudden cut to the “to be continued in part 2″ screen caught me completely off-guard, and it startled me enough to make me forget about the looming threat of the real screamer, if only for a few split seconds. And sure enough, a couple of secs later, there’s the screamer. Damn you, Spoony! DAMN YOUUUU!

But once i saw that pattern come up, i kept thinking “Will he mention Uzumaki (Spiral)?,” which is this movie from 2000 based on a manga of the same name. i caught a part of this movie when i was a kid, and i still don’t know how, i found it, and ive only watched it a few times since… but i think there are some parts of it you might have liked, Spoony. Talk about a curse, or not… that was a peculiar way to manifest something… it sure had my brain running wild growing up.

  • zero_miles_per_hour

I have a theory that Shivers was much, much more influential than we think. It’s fairly horrifying even by modern standards, back in ’75 it would have been traumatizing, and some of the horror movie exemplars that came afterwards look to me like rehashes of Shivers but with the horror watered down in some way as a coping mechanism (set in a safely remote location away from normal society, removal of the rape element, the heroes aren’t as poorly equipped, the threat derives from a specific thing and eliminating that thing will actually eliminate the threat, the threat is more of a psychological thing, the movie actually starts after the worst case scenario has already occurred, etc.). But I’m kind of a crazy Cronenberg fan, so take that how you will.

Hey, Noah… sorry for a totally random request but could you possibly go see the movie called Iron Sky now that it’s playing in the US and make a vlog about it? It’s a black comedy about moon nazis. That’s pretty much all I can say about it. It’s gotten mixed reviews, mostly negative, but I thought it was fun and thought you might like it. Maybe.

I hate even asking this since the closest theatre to you that’s playing it is… probably in Los Angeles. Just. Thought I’d at least ask. I know you probably don’t want/can’t afford to take a day off to travel to another state to see a random European movie (plus your other fans would be pissed off for any possible delays). I’d just love to hear your thoughts (plus it might get the movie a bit more attention) even if you might not like it. I know a lot of people didn’t like it but I had fun watching it. Not saying it’s the best movie I’ve seen, not even close, but I think it deserves more and the guys who made it really have potential.

  • zerok999

It’s sad how modern horror movies is nothing but jump scares. Everything is nothing but action these days even in “horror” video games. People don’t understand that horror is mental and not about 100% action. I hate when you see a good psychological horror movie and people say “that was a dumb movie, nothing happened!”

Funny about the dumb white people thing, I have been asking that same question for years lol. Why are white ppl so stupid in horror movies?! We will never know. I know ppl say “their would be no movie then” but It doesn’t add anything to the horror and it can be more believable without the stupidity. It’s more scary when things are more believable anyway. This is the big pet peeve I have with horror movies where I draw a line between laughable and being legit. When you have room to question “well why did he do such a stupid thing?” it’s when you are taken out of the experience.

    • doresh

My own theory is that almost all horror movies borrow from the same script (kinda like disaster movies and romantic comedies) and only really change the killer and the setting.
Said script predates cellphones (which is why every slasher movie nowadays has to be set in an area without a mobile network) and features stupid characters only meant to move the plot from one scary set piece to the next because why not? Nobody ever said this script was any good. Any halfway intelligent human being would easily avoid the typical horror set pieces.

    • draxo

Its the mark of poor writers: they cannot think of a way to make things happen without just making the characters act dumb. of course, by taking some extra time and effort they could think of these things is they were smarter. At this point though, I can only think they are either too lazy or not smart enough.

  • doresh

I fear the Paranormal Activity writers have no clue how to properly end this franchise, so they tread water till they get an idea.
I presume the 5th movie will reveal that Hunter actually has an identical twin brother who was born just a few seconds before him, was also adopted and got a sex change because that would take the audience totally by surprise (at least the poor souls who still follow this franchise).

And btw, those J-horror flicks sounds VERY interesting. And someday, I gotta watch Videodrome and the second film in Carpenter’s Apocalypse trilogy (I remember watching parts of “Prince of Darkness”, but I can’t recall anything specific).

I completely agree with Noah about the orchestra stings in horror movies. It’s the exact same with comedy movie trailer soundtracks. Every time they get to a punchline in a trailer the music cuts to say, “Hey….you should be laughing at this…” It’s lazy and insulting as far as I’m concerned

  • SamThePsycicClam

(Warning this is a rant I freely admit it) The trick with the motion dots really pissed me off. Yes the kinect does map the room with motion capture dots, yes these dots are visible with an infra-red camera, but unless the x-box is switched on the kinect is inactive and yet every night the god damn dots are all over the room. I realize that the dad doesn’t understand technology but even my dad who can’t operate anything more complicated than a tv remote and a very basic mobile knows if the x-box is on and how to switch it off. He can barely even google and he knows this. So my question is why the fuck does no one switch off the x-box? I mean the memory problem is bad enough but their electricity bill must be through the fucking roof. Also you were talking about dumb ass parents, and I admit you might get to this later (still watching), what about letting a young kid take a bath while watching a film on a laptop and then leaving the fucking room for 5-10 minutes I’m sure he won’t fuck around with the laptop WHICH HE DOES, luckily he isn’t a complete retard and only pulls it a bit closer and not into the fucking bath but still.., I think I’m done ranting… sorry. Actually no fuck your jump scares… the movie not you… although that did suck slightly.

Oh he’s doing the thing… I get it.”. If I had been watching I would’ve punched a hole in my monitor then ran for my live. xD

  • doresh

I dunno, there are a few things about the Americanized version that bother me:

    – That weird TV static effect they gave Samara make her look like some kind of hologram. I found it more effective in the original when an actual, real-looking girl came out the TV.

    – They added some really unecessary paranormal effects that can be a bit goofy. It always cracks me up when this TV just slams Rachel into the well – a well she was going to investigate anyways.

Other than that, there are worse American horror movie remakes out ^_^

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Valerie-Dicaire/100000800421372 Valérie Dicaire

To me it made perfect sense that she would appear in this static form. After all, her body is still rotting down in the well, so how is she going to manifests herself into the world? The same way she created images out of her mind, that’s how! Like a photo-projection. She kept getting better at it, first giving people and animals visions, then physically manifesting them with the burning of the wall, then thermographies, then videos… But it was never going to be perfect looking images. One of the dominating aspect of Samarra’s living days was that she had nothing other than a TV as a compamion. So the images she’s was the most familiar with were raw, grainy, staticy television pictures.

I totally agree with your second point though, but I enjoyed the movie so much so I had no problem turning a blind eye on that one goofy scene.

      • doresh

The gritty black-and-white looks is pretty creepy, but I feel the static clashes with her leaving traces of normal water all over the place (which implies an actual physical presence). I know there are other situations where water appears out of nowhere, but those situations are usually those unecessary paranormal effects that don’t really do anything besides reminding the audience that this is a horror movie.

It’s basically a weird middle ground for me: A non-static Samara would’ve been scarier to me, as would be an all-out version. Imagine the colorless static oozing out of the TV, following Samara to mark her area of influence.

Just posting to say that what you say in the videos seems so true to me it’s unbelievable. I am not a huge fan of horror movie, because in my youth, i did not liked jump-scare, found them annoying, not funny, and the shitty LOUD noise … god, hated that. One day, a friend of mine convinced me to go watch The ring (the japanese version), and i was expecting fucking jump-scares again, and this movie showed me a side of the horror movie i never expected. There is almost no jump-scare in, no loud noise (almost), no gore, no startling scene, the horror comes from the ambiance, the tone of the movie, the inexpilcable thing happening that the characters discovers. Never a movie (at that time) gave me such a feeling of spookiness before, whithout shit jumping at me. I got scared like never before, but it felt “right” and amazing. I understood after that, that jump-scare can be good, moderatly, or can ruined an horror movie if they cannot do without. (sorry for my english, not my native language)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bob-Holly/100003918343477 Bob Holly

    What I didn’t like:
-Where the eff did that Robbie kid come from? While this could be established in subsequent films this inappropriately leaves this film incomplete.
-Ignoring the stupid parents schtick (which I’m ok with), the dad giving into the mom to “come to bed” when the knife dropped was too unrealistic.
    -It wasn’t suspenseful.
    -Inappropriate use of jump-scares.
-Narrative that establishes a continuous story line explaining why the hell this crap is going on was non-existent
-24 hour video taping and storage of video issues.

    What I’ll forgive:
-inappropriate editing that ruins the “found footage” factor
-the boyfriend entered the house when no one was home at one point, he could’ve reasonably changed camera tapes thus explaining the hand-held having supposed infinite amount of storage.
-The parents not believing Alex about the car is realistic, but I agree with spoony about them trying to play her off. They should’ve grounded her.
-Many reasonably priced cameras have night shot that can pick up on IR, not to the extent that it would pick up the Kinect’s light points at that resolution.

BTW, I’m glad someone else sees the worth of the american version of The Ring. It’s a great horror movie, one of my favorites in fact. It improves immensly on many aspects of Ringu and also adds its own unique flare, making it a much richer experience overall. The imagery and atmosphere is much more disturbing and creepier (I for one did not find the video clip in Ringu to be frigthening at all…Oh look, a guy with a towel on his head?! WTF), the sounds make you cringe with discomfort, the music is godawfully eerie, everything is awfully wet and watery to go along the way the little girl died, and there’s even room for social commentary on the omnipresence of television and the media in our daily lifes. What better way for evil to spread than through something we can’t go without a single day of our life. Another thing that I thought was brilliant and completely absent from Ringu is how our desire to empathize can subtly twist our perspective of things. For the greater part of the movie, we and the main character sympathize with the little girl thinking she was horribly wronged somehow and so, as more clues are reveal, they are perceived as proof of that. Take the video from the mental hospital for example; the first time it’s viewed the girl sounds innocent, angelic even, while the doctor sounds excessively patronizing. The doctor asks: “You don’t want to hurt anyone, do you?” and Samarra answers “But I do, and I’m sorry… It won’t stop.” She sounds apologetic, it happens against her will. However, once we discover she was in fact an evil being, the video is shown to us again, and the same exact sentence sounds dastrically different in the way it’s spoken, it’s the *real* way it should’ve been heard by a unbiased person. It’s sounds more like “But I do (it’s in my nature do so, so…), and I’m sorry (tough luck guys)… It won’t stop (I’ll keep doing it forever, willingly and sadically). Okay so I’ve gone off on a tangent here, but The Ring? Great movie! The sequel, not so much, it ruined some of the good things of the first one… :-/

I’m glad you brought up some other titles like The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness, GREAT horror movies, though the female lead in the latter was a terrible actress. Prince of Darkness had some very cool ideas but it feels to me as though it shouldve had a much bigger budget, as it is a lot of things that should’ve been terrifying in the last act kinda fell flat. *SPOILER ALERT* Like when Satan awakens, it would’ve been much cooler if the woman he was gestating in had mutated into some horrifying demonic form, especially since that’s what it seemed to be leading up to that everytime we caught a glimpse of her *sleeping*. But no, instead we have the same normal looking woman with only some silly make up on. Yeah….. Loved the first half of the movie though. I should probably give those other movies a watch too. At first I thought you meant the american versions of The Eye and One Missed Call… I was like: “OMG Spoony, have you lost your mind?!” While the Ring did everything right, these did everything wrong. Anyway, never seen the originals, sounds interesting though.

Holy shit… After that first scare, I was so freaked out for the rest of the vid. I literally jumped at every sound (damn you squeeky toy!). Finally, after like 50 mins, I started to relax. And then you do it again! Ffs spoony, you’re brilliant, but don’t you dare do that again! Shit.

You made an awesome point though.

    • theshamster

You do realise that because you said ‘don’t do that again’ he WILL do it again (especially on any review/video he may make on Halloween night)

  • Lord_of_the_Ninth

Spoony, can I watch your fucking videos without fearing that I will wake up my entire house? You’ve made your point quite nicely during the rant. The jump scares you inserted were just idiotic.

(If you don’t like screamers, you best avoid 1:30 and 1:06:05.)
I honestly thought that those screamers were well place, despite making me paranoid and making me jump whenever I heard Oreo’s squeaky toy. They demonstrated your point on how restraining jump scares can truly make them work.
    Good job you bastard.

  • MechaVelma

I was really hoping for a better ending to Sinister.

The thing in movies that I hate more than dumb protagonists are dumb villains. Protagonists, coming into a wholly, new experience, have a reasonable level of stupidity to begin with. No one wants to believe they are in a horrible setting. Everyone wants to believe in they go to bed and pull the covers over their eyes, everything will be alright in the morning. An initial amount of stupidity with a gradual learning curve is permitted and expected in horror movies.

What I can not tolerate are stupid villains. Especially creatures that have done this kind of thing before. The creature in Sinister relies on so much in this scenario when he has a much better opportunity staring him in the face. The target is a fucking author and a publisher of true crime novels and the creature moves through images of itself. I mean, holy shit, could Bagul have wasted this opportunity more? He could have bargained the soul of the guy’s child in exchange for the author putting Bagul’s face into the homes of MILLIONS of readers world-wide.

That level of foolishness is unforgivable to me.

  • La Mancha Noctámbula

Spoony, you. are. a. fucking. ASSHOLE!… No, really! Dude, you scare, sorry, “startled” the SHIT out of me!!

I know you were trying to make a point and I also hate when movies use the cheapest “scary” resource ever but seriously!? I thought you were above that!… Anyway… It’s over now, I’ll keep watching the videos. I just wanted to vent a bit…

If you ever need your blood drawn for anything, ALWAYS! ALWAYS ask for a Vamp. Those are the most experienced nurses who know what the fuck they are doing. My mom has rolling veins and they can catch those fuckers every time. Don’t let the trainees touch you. I know that’s unfair to those training, but having a big fucking bruise down half your arm is no way to spend your hospital stay.

  • Mr_Obvious

Heart problem people, I understand your complaints.
Earphone people? Um. Not so much. You have obviously missed memos about how loud you should keep earphones. And because I’m good at overly-generalizing, I assume you’re of the same ever-growing class of rude idiot who listens to their music over their phone/ipod loudly enough on the street or on public transit that anyone within a 10-foot radius can ALSO hear.

    • Doleth

To be fair to the rude idiots who broadcast their music in a 10-foot radius, the default ipod earphones and other earphones like them are so shitty that ambiant sounds will drown out the music unless it’s at max volume(even then it’s pretty even) and they project most of the sound outward, because they’re shitty. Idiot who play their music on speaker in public transit however are always fair target.

      • Mr_Obvious

Many of them are not using the default. Heck, a lot of them aren’t even using earbuds. They can buy new sets if they’re going to listen to it outside.

I’m sorry, I ride public transit daily because I have a medical condition that prohibits me from getting a license. I don’t really enjoy being forced to listen to people’s music, especially when most of it seem to be about beating women (seriously. I got bored and annoyed one week and started transcribing lyrics. Over three days 22 spilled songs out of 40 contained lyrics condoning violence towards others). Headphone spill or speaker, I have no sympathy.

Jump scare in the first video is from 1:20 to 1:25, mute it immediately after (or while) you hear “it’s not scary, it’s startling” because then he’ll say “it’s like” and proceed to shatter your eardrums.

I liked how Spoony used several classic screamer images too. I recognized Kikia, the “Maze Game,” and one other I can’t remember the name of. Yes, I know the images for the first two were taken from Fatal Frame and the Exorcist respectively, so don’t get pedantic on me.

And Spoony, if you’re lying about not using screamers anymore I will dedicate my life to startling the shit out of you. Literally. I’m talking full on terror-shits here. I don’t care if I’ll need to hire an army of people with airhorns or construct the world’s largest vuvuzela, I won’t stop until you make an unscheduled drop…soyeahireallydontlikescreamersspoonyplzdont:(:(:(

    • theshamster

Well, if you ever do play against him online, be sure to startle him right back.
I plan to someday play against him as a creature on Resident Evil 6, and if I kill his agent, I’m going to tell him via head phones “Your nightmare’s just begun, Spoonyone! I am the Gate…….Painter! Son of the Gate Keeper, and cousin of the Gate Cleaner! Bwahahahaha”

  • theshamster

I agree that Jump-Scares suck; remember Angry Joe’s review of the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street? he said Jump scares really piss him off because they are so cheap and constantly used, that it isn’t scary anymore, it’s annoying….really, really annoying.
Also Phelous said that “Drag me to hell” should be renamed “jump-scare me to hell” as that is ALL it has; jump scare, after jump scare, after jump scare.
Horror should have the sense of impending doom and dread, and rather than have a jump scare where the villian/monster appears, why not have them casually appear and “‘play’ with their food”

  • http://www.facebook.com/otakursed Mike Lee

Feck, I wear headphones all the time, and that was just annoying. But all this crap about horror flicks has reawakened a lapsing interest. Only flicks of such a nature that I really liked were House and the Evil Dead series. But they had comedy in their wheelhouse as well. Gonna definitely check out those Miike flicks, they sound interesting.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Wolf.pumkin Christina Zyp

This is the first time I’ve ever not been able to finish one of your videos. The length of the screamer was to much for me and I had an anxiety attack and couldn’t pause because I couldn’t see my hand. Do they really do that in horror movies now? o.o I just want to say, that I’m not posting this to whine. If you want to use a screamer, while I don’t like it, I’ll deal with it because I love your videos. But please, could you post a disclaimer, or not make them so long? Also, for some reason you upside down is hilarious. :)

Seems like Spoony missed some things in his synopsis of Sinister.

There was some explanation as to why Hawke’s character wanted to move into that house. He says at one point that the family is broke and the house was “a steal.” Also, it’s established that he’s moved into houses near crime scenes before, for the sake of his writing. Neither of these establish a NEED to move into that house, but they do explain why it might be an attractive option for him.

At the end, when he’s watching the “extended endings” to the super-8 films – it’s established that his daughter has drugged him. Earlier in the film there’s expository dialogue that all the murdered family members were drugged so they couldn’t have resisted. There’s also a scene where the daughter wants to help the mother make coffee for her dad. After he views the films for the last time, and it reveals that the missing kids were responsible for the murders – he looks into his coffee cup and sees a strange substance, he then passes out. That explains why he didn’t react to the revelatory information in his final viewing, he was already loopy from the drugs.

I honestly thought the movie was fairly conservative with the jump-scares. There are a few here and there, but it’s not like every scene depends on one. Most are well-earned, with one particularly excellent one during the “yard work” film. The only jump scare I thought was totally unnecessary was the one in the last shot of the movie, when the demon pops out and mugs for the camera right before the credits. That was, admittedly, retarded – but forgivable in an otherwise quite good horror flick.

  • peteshamrock101

Thats how limited these movies are….you keep its subtle and it might work for one or 2 movies before the charm wears off. But if you expand it or try ta make it bigger and scarryer it loses the apeal it once had for the scares being subtle. Theres really no way ta win :( I’ve only seen PA 3 and 4 and not the frist two when they came out cause altho subtle is good i don’t wanna sit though a whole movie for only 4-5 scarry moments..thats were it works best for fans of these movies. Ta make it bigger and try to up the scares it loses its believability and becomes more like a hollywood made movie then a found footage movie.
I was more pissed off with the girl then the parents cause its like
1, Have you stoped watching the footage your recording i.e the flying knive and being lifted outta bed by a demon.
2, Why the fuck are’nt you saying ok mom dad shut up and watch this rq
3, Why do you mostly keep leaven your door open when theres weird shit going down and you know this >:(
Its clear now the fate of this movies…..there gonna be milk’ed for all there worth till theres nothing left then it’ll be tossed aside with saw and other movies.

I HATE screamers, H-A-T-E in bold capital letters chalked up on the biggest billboard you can find. It is for their exsistence I don’t surf “new” links on April 1st or on all hallow’s eve itself.

Now, I watch Noah’s non-game videos from time to time; but I almost always watch the movie ones; since his tastes dovetail with mine nicely; though I do only a little less cursing, not much less. I even repeat the mantra of “vote with your wallet” to friends to avoid movies that look like crap.

So, I notice an “edit” that warns about not employing a screamer. Sight unseen, I already want to smack Noah with a folding chair and feed him his dog. That’s the hate we’re talking about here for screamers, mine at least. I read comments to see what kind of screamer it is, when it happens, and how many. Though, I’m not too surprised since Noah does splice in a “REDRUM” scene in one of his later game videos (one of the Ultima series? can’t remember right now); and he’s a self professed asshole sometimes. All this to do what? Try to watch the video to hear his opinion of PA4.

The only constructive thing I could say, should a screamer or w/e be something you want to do in a video: have a warning on the video, maybe in its title or a BIG BOLD LETTER one at the bottom. Don’t want to take away from the !!Surprise!! aspect of it, but you can least warn people about something like a “sound spike” in the video or “sorry it gets REALLY loud, will fix later.” That way, you still get to do a jump scare and you don’t hurt anyone’s ears and those who “get it” about screamers will know the “code word” as it were.

Anyway, will try to enjoy the video. Keep the volume low at the right points and listen to his opinion, since I do find him interesting to listen to. Honestly, I’ll be happy if Noah NEVER does that again, but if he feels compelled: at least give some fair warning for the good of our ears and, in some of our rare cases, sanity. Keep Calm and DFTBA!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509204827 Aaron D Springer

Well, okay, for a screamer that wasn’t too bad. Though, I watched it unmaximized, video player’s sound turned down to about 15% and my PC Master Volume about the same in a well lit room. It was pretty short and it was just “loud.” Whereas other screamers I’ve seen have had horrific (think holocaust photos and other nastiness) or creepy (think “the devil” from Exorcist) imagery or sounds. This was pretty tame by comparison. That said, I can imagine how much of a heart-stopper watching anouther fun video with Noah and then OMG WIERD FACE AND LOUD NOISE. The contrast would make you jump a good foot off your seat; or, for my more deadened horror friends, a very slow blink and giving the screen the finger. Anyway, on with the video and NOT watching the VERY tail end of part one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christian-Bonde-Andersen/100000279848355 Christian Bonde Andersen

Hehe, to help protect the people that were genuinely scared by this, you should probably put a slight screamer warning on the first video :) Even though I knew that the second screamer was coming and when it was coming, I was still quite tense waiting for it for the rest of the vlog, so you really made your point. Knowing that a scare will come but not exactly when is a powerful thing when used in a movie, but it will wear out quickly if a movie keeps using jump-scares all the time.

Just a minor nitpick to a statement made that it doesn’t make sense that a couple capable of having children to adopt.

I thought it was the opposite (parents with children tend to adopt) but I guess I’m wrong. The most I can find is this: http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/09/NSAP/chartbook/chartbook.cfm?id=17 . On the bottom, the percentages of families with multiple children (either adopted or biological) that adopt is around 21% for private adoption. Not a zinger, but infertility isn’t the only reason for adopting.

  • Lone Wolf

Jump scares are not the lowest form of horror, they are not horror at all. They don’t scare, they startle and there is a big difference between them.

While I can’t really argue your point on orchestral stings I would be curious to hear your thoughts about the shower scene in Psycho which is probably the single most manipulative orchestra sting in the history of film. Then again Hitchcock was a proud manipulator to put it mildly. Also while Ethan Hawke’s character isn’t very bright he still isn’t nearly as dumb as anyone in Prometheus.

Two comments. First as, Sinister, Could have been good with the father going down, showing the footage with the Sheriff, then the two of them investigating as small pieces are released here and there, while both of them are being told that their children are going nuts as the investigation takes more and more of their life, and the end one father chooses to murder his children to spare them the corruption where the other lets his children kill him.

Second… Is that Sting’s cod piece ala Feyd-Rautha from dune? Why does Spoony have Stings junk cover? This has left many bad images in my head.

Please make us a found-footage movie for the ages, Spoony! If anyone can do it right, you can.
Additionally, I haven’t seen the movie so I don’t know if this would work but wouldn’t it be better if it were established that he was looking for a new house, then he found a nice place and happened to hear about the spooky stuff and thought it could be his big break? Thereby giving him a reason to buy the house? …..I dunno.

  • Skolex

Sure proved the point that videos/movies with screamers or jump scares in them make you never want to watch it again.

You could have “proved your point”, and actually did later, in a much more tactful way. Loud noises can easily throw me into a panic attack, so it wasn’t entirely appreciated, personally. I don’t want to watch the Sinister video now until it’s proven that there are no more loud/screamer jump scares.

    • CheshireBat

How do you want it proven? We’re all out of graphs and beakers here (but if we DID have a graph, it would be flat, because there really are none in Sinister).

      • Skolex

Oh, I don’t know, some text below the video saying that there aren’t any? More than enough people have asked for some kind of warning to be put on the videos, and are refusing to watch them because of the lack of it.

  • Sevyne

Sorry, but after that first screamer I stopped the video and will not be watching either of these. Yes I’ve read the comments and know where they are now, but I’ll pass. I have a headache now from having my headphones on and unable to react fast enough to it, not to mention a pretty terrible chest pain as well.

I understand you were trying to prove a point, but you really didn’t need to do that. I come here to relax and enjoy a good rant, not to have my eardrums blown out and have my heart feel like it’s being ripped out.

Sorry, but I physically can’t handle being startled like that.

It really is mind boggling. How much of a sheep does someone need to be? I mean, I didn’t talk down on Spoony. I like his videos and will continue to enjoy them, just not these videos in particular is all. I’m such a terrible person for that I guess.

      • PeaTearGryfin

I don’t think they are justifying the screamers. I think they are just disappointed at how reactionary they are being by saying that they refuse to watch anything else Spoony does because he scared them.

        • Sevyne

Where did I say I wouldn’t watch anything else Spoony does? Please find and quote me on it. In fact I made it pretty clear that I was only skipping these videos specifically. It also had nothing to do with being scared (because honestly screamers are just annoying), but more that it caused physical pain. I don’t watch movies with that crap, so why would I watch videos on the internet with that crap?

          • Spectr

            Thats PeaTear, Spoonys last Fanboy.

Hes infamous for sucking his cock no matter what, several months ago when Spoony was still in his “half a video per month”-period he was the only one still defending him.

And dont bother with quotes, he will ignore facts.

          • PeaTearGryfin

Dude, all I said was that some aren’t as pissed about the scremers as others. At no point did I justify the screamer. I agree with everybody else that they were both dick moves.

          • http://twinfinite.net/blog/author/treleus/ Michael Rodriguez

Actually, I’d argue the second one was a dick move. The first time it’s immediately followed with Spoony’s goofy, “See? SEE?” rant, and it’s easier to come down from it that way. It was a one-time prank. It’s worse when it ends on that note, and even though I agree that it isn’t scary per se, it still leaves the body in a mildly traumatized state. Proves his point, but you can’t argue with biology.

Also, I couldn’t help but expect it to happen again at the end of the second video. Again, biology.

Scare me once, ah you son of a bitch. Scare me twice, dude. Now I’ll forever wait for the third time until I decide to go watch The Ring title screen step on a mustard bottle. *SPLORTCH*

Spoony, I love your videos, but you just went full retard. No offense, but how stupid do you need to be to do that scream thing. You damaged my audio equipment beyond repair. I’m serious, how stupid do you need to be? If you are going to do such a stupid thing at least watch your audio levels, at least do it carefully.

I’m not taking the risk of this happening again.

    • http://twitter.com/zodd88 Guido Palombi

I really doubt that there is a careful way to do a jumpscare….but you’re right, a disclaimer would have helped.

    • http://tpbtavern.blogspot.com/ Farson89

How fucking shitty is your audio equipment that an increase in volume actually damages it?

  • http://twitter.com/LikChan Lik Chan

OMFG, i didn’t mind your jump scare Spoony but that was deafening dude! :(

  • Mort

Fuck you Spoony. I came here to watch your rants and relax but instead you made a “cheap way” to prove a point. TWICE

  • Waffle

    1st video + earphones = bad idea.

  • http://twitter.com/dunebat dunebat

    In your found-footage-but-not-found-footage-anymore script:

When the characters drop the camera and people start dying, cut to police footage (maybe from “Cops” or one of those dashboard cameras police cars have on them now?) of the police responding to the call and have them show what happened to the people who died, or them finding the footage. (You could also say the Police’s CSI teams had video cameras on them to better record the crime scene, and the CSIs just so happen to find some interesting footage…)

    • doresh

I fear most movie producers aren’t brave enough to basically skip the whole climax of the movie due to realism ^^

      • http://twitter.com/dunebat dunebat

Oh, I didn’t say to skip the climax. Just that there are other ways to film it and keep it within the realm of realism.

        • doresh

A realm of realism usually avoided by film makers ^^

          • http://twitter.com/dunebat dunebat

Only because filmmakers are lazy and hackneyed these days. If you do it right and think a film through, you can make it awesome while retaining some reasonable level of realism.

          • doresh

That would require a filmmaker with balls. Sadly, they play it pretty safe nowadays. There’s a reason why the horror film genre is amongst the least innovative genre around (with only romantic comedies and disaster movies being worse).
At least this explains why Hollywood loves remaking foreign horror flicks…

          • http://twitter.com/dunebat dunebat

Same thing with science fiction. When was the last time you saw a sci fi film that really shook things up?

Don’t you DARE say J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek”. Plotline of “Star Wars” in a TOS setting with better SFX. That really didn’t shake anything up. I mean something that had an original plot and characters and really rocked the boat in ways never done before.

The first time it happened was when “Star Wars Episode IV” premiered during the late 1970s. The last time? The first film in “The Matrix” series in 1999.

          • doresh

Why should I dare? The movie was too “meh” for that XD

But it’s weird how the genre with the most limitless possibilities seems to be the one that suffered the most in recent times. Guess it’s because Sci-Fi depends so much on good ideas.

          • http://twitter.com/dunebat dunebat

Exactly! It requires imagination. Many directors are technical guys and have plenty of imagination, but a.) not in the right areas for a good story, or b.) they’re too imaginative for their producers, who you often have to dumb things down for.

          • doresh

It’s even worse on TV. I don’t think there’s a single Sci-Fi show in recent years that was NOT ultimately cancelled…

          • http://twitter.com/dunebat dunebat

“The X-Files”? “Star Trek: Voyager”? Depends on your definition of “recent years”.

          • doresh

I think this trend started with Firefly, mostly because American TV channels don’t have that much patience ^^

          • http://twitter.com/dunebat dunebat

            Point. Poor “Firefly” and “Dollhouse”…

  • Waffle

You know what might work as a source of found footage? Hidden cameras in the house or wherever the movie is set that are later found by police or whatever. OY! Just got to the end of the first video…SON OF A BITCH ><

    • doresh

But why would someone hide cameras all over his house and have them record several days of footage?

      • Waffle

Should’ve been more specific. They wouldn’t record ALL the necessary footage, but some of it. As to why they would be there? Maybe a husband thinks his wife is cheating and sets up the cameras to catch her. Or…i’m not sure how plausible this this, but there was an episode of a TV show I saw where the killer broke into the house of his victim and set up secret security cameras so he could watch them. I know the idea has it’s flaws, but I can imagine scenarios where, again, SOME of the footage could come from hidden cameras.

        • doresh

Possibly, but I imagine their quality to be a bit crappy (low resolution, black and white, only takes a frame every second at best). You gotta save disk space somehow ^_^

          • Waffle

Ah. Didn’t consider that. Good point, my friend ^^

  • Dernogan

1:20 : F*** YOU man. I F****** HATE that shit. That’s why I can’t stand horror movies. And yes I use headphones. And yeah fully agree, that’s the only reason I hate horror stuff. Love the tension when it’s properly written otherwise.

I worked out two ways how the whole false hunter thing could “work”, if that’s the right word:
    1) the two babies were accidently switched at birth
    2) although Hunter was the 2nd couple’s first son, it wasn’t the mother’s first… like she gave it up for adoption, wasn’t ready as a mother yet
…neither is perfect but apparently, the filmakers haven’t offered better

Next jump scare: An audio clip of Oreo’s squeaker turned to eleven and sped up, with oreo doing silly poses with googly eyes.

    THAT would actually be interesting.

  • Dernogan

Body horror : The Fly ?

  • Senna4ever

There is an art to a great jump scare.
Case in point Exorcist III. I’ll not spoil for anyone that has not seen it. But those that have know how great it is.
The reason it works so well in that film is the great set up, the framing of the shot and the fact the scare is not accompanied with a loud noise, yes there is “something”…but it’s not a speaker breaking annoyance.

What Spoony demonstrated was not a jump scare, it was a loud annoyance.

    • http://twitter.com/zodd88 Guido Palombi

Based on your horror film recommendations, I would highly suggest (to anyone) watching “A Tale of Two Sisters” by JI-Woon Kim. I first saw it in an Asian Horror Film college course alongside Audition, One Missed Call, (the obligatory) Ringu, and Kairo (among others not mentioned by Spoony) – A Tale of Two Sisters was by far my favorite.

    Spoony sucks.

  • IHeart28

Spoony, you got me really good with the screamers. I screamed so loudly though, probably am gonna get in trouble for it with my dad XD. Please don’t do that or at least specifically warn us next time, just some mild criticism. Pretty much a critque that people mentioned though XD
That being said, the vlogs were enjoyable as always. I have to really agree, the orchestra stings just piss me off to no bounds, I’m glad you harped on that, stings just scream “HEY I AM SOMETHING SCARY BE SCARED”. So yeah.

Also, did anyone notice the Dune thong? XD So awesome and nightmare inducing

  • http://www.facebook.com/coffee.dash.1 Coffee Dash

When i was a kid my stepsister, who was 2 years older then me loved Horrors. We would end up watching a horror movie or two every other weekend when i was maybe 5 (and I don’t feel corrupted or broken, or anything today )…. It got pretty hard for a horror movie to scare me or surprise me, so i stopped watching them.
Now I’m 24 and i find that my resistance has weaken and i can come back to watching them.(and maybe picking up some scary games)Thanks for some recommendations. I also hate cheap, “boo a ghost behind you in the mirror” scares.

If You watched a decent amount of slashers (which i have when i was young ) and you laugh at how predictable they are a very an interesting movie to watch is “The Cabin in the Woods” It might start as a Mega Cliché, but it is worth watching, especially with other people- it’s fun.
“End of the line” is a Horror, that actually surprised me and i would recommend it, yet it also may seem tacky at the beginning (it also would be better to not see the cover)
A fun slasher parody – “Tucker and Dale vs Evil”

  • http://twitter.com/cosmic_kirby CosmicKirby

Can we get a link to the vid without the screamers in it?
I really really don’t want to have to be on edge for these things, I tend to listen to them in the background and I really don’t sit through them waiting to pause and skip forward to avoid having my headphones blowing my ears out.

  • Michael Bowman

Believe it or not I’ve had footage at about 720p encoded to h264 and it only too about 50 megabytes for 20 minutes or so, and if you have the money to drop on the encoder, there is programs that should be able to live encode to h264

  • Senna4ever

I don’t mind jump scares, but they have to be done well. (My previous point of Exorcist III)
I think you can only really get away with 1 jump scare per film. As everyone now knows the signs to look out for, so know when they are coming.
So instead of filling a film with loads of jump scares, just make one great one instead. One great one sticks in the mind more then loads of cheap ones.
I really think 2 is too many, see Spoony’s PA4 review for proof ;).

There are many sub-genres in the horror genre.
A few years ago there was nothing but gore-fests everywhere. Now it seems to be the turn of jump scare-fests.
Even the (previously) reliable Japanese horror is getting in on the act.
Anyone seen the new Ringu film? It’s jumped on the 3D gimmick bandwagon and every scare in that is a jump scare. But worse, jump scares that abuse the 3D gimmick. Yeah it works for the first time, but after that you know what’s coming, when it’s coming and it’s going to abuse the 3D. It’s gone quiet, someone is looking at a computer monitor, we are getting a POV shot…I wonder if something will pop out of the screen in 3D? Oh yeah it did (more than once), that’s…predictable.
Plus it’s not just the predictable jump scares or overuse of 3D. The characters are dull, the story is flat, there’s no subtlety, etc. It’s just not Ringu at all.
The genius ending of the original Ringu (I’ll not spoil) is an image that has stuck with me for decades (ruined and OTT in the remake). With the new Ringu, there is nothing that stands out, it’s just like any other horror film out there now. It’s just very, very…meh.
Now that Japanese horror is being “dumbed down”, there may be no decent horror films left any more.

As I said, so many sub-genres within horror, but they do not mix them up and just stick with bandwagon mentality. We get years of gore-fests, then years of jump-fests, then years of psychological-fests, etc.
If they offered a mix of horror genres so when we go into the cinema we are not sure what to expect, that is half the battle won right from the off.

The last recent horror film I enjoyed was Cabin In The Woods. Not cos it was scary (it was not). But just down to the fact it was an homage film…and done really well. A horror fan will love spotting the nods, references and in-jokes. I don’t think it’s a great film, but it was “fresh” at it’s time of release as no other horror film was doing this. It was nice to see something “different” for once.

I do agree with Spoony that silence can be scarier than noise. The big orchestral strings can be annoying.
However…Psycho, shower scene. Need I say more?
Still, Htich was a genius director and knew how to his his film-making tools correctly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DazDevine Daz Devine

Well Spoony, maybe the family in the second had real Hunter, gave him away, and then later on gave birth to PA2 Hunter but actually kept him. Either way it still makes fuck all sense.

  • http://www.facebook.com/timothy.dalbeck Timothy W Dalbeck

PA4 sounds like the funniest comedy of the year!

  • CaptainDingaling

I do not understand how the Paranormal series keeps getting more sequels. I also don’t see how people find any of these films enjoying. I consider myself someone of a horror fanatic which means Iove horror films and will watch almsot anything from lowbudget never heard of to foreign films in search of good horror. But, when I saw this movie I was more shocked at how terrible it was and how successful it became than anything else.
Like for 75minutes in each movie you watch it and it’s just boring conversations and bumps and creeks and then all of a sudden the ghost demons start throwing objects or flipping tables or whatever. It’s really kind of a mockery at what horror is and scary of frightening in the least. I just can’t get into these series. Too boring and if anyone tried to tell me it’s good because of this or that I know they’re just seeing things. This is a very simple movie that has no story because it was a one shot deal that cashed in and now they’re trying to continue that success by developing these stories that don’t make any sense to keep it going.

  • http://twitter.com/FlyinyourSoup Me

God damnit Spoony, you gave me a panic attack. TWICE! That shit takes a while to recover from. I hate hate hate the screamer >_<

  • Justin Alexander

I honestly have not watched these videos because of reports of a “screamer.” Unfortunate because I enjoy your perspective on horror films, and I was considering seeing Sinister.

    • http://www.facebook.com/christofor.barrett Christofor Barrett

there are no screamers in the sinister part so go ahead and watch..

If you skip the first 10 minutes of the first video, and stop it before the last 2 minutes you should be fine

  • MikeBester

Yeah the Screamers were an utter failure on your part. Several people have stated they will stop donating to you or even stop watching your videos and I can understand them.

I wont, but I have to say Im still very much disappointed. You DIDNT use them to just “proof a point” – For that a more silent one would have sufficed. No you wanted a cheap joke, the smug smile after the screamer speaks volumes. And for that you went for full volume, endangering people who were watching them with In-Ear headphones.

    • Spectr

++++ Hey Spoony. Lets take some headphones, In-Ears, and watch your video on a higher volume setting. ;)

    • c.conley90

Honestly, this screamer thing isn’t the only thing stopping people from watching his videos or donating. It’s the truth that Noah has become quite a bit lazy and has gone long periods of time without making a video and when he does it’s stupid rants like these videos. Sorry that’s just my two cents.

    • http://www.facebook.com/christofor.barrett Christofor Barrett

Well i personally enjoy these videos and while the screamers pissed me off pretty badly; it definitely isn’t a reason to stop donating or watching.

Those people are over-reacting to say the least

and btw conley. I’m not being a white knight, but if you don’t enjoy these kind of videos.. just don’t watch them.

It’s like playing a video game that is an FPS and complaining that it isn’t and RPG. It should be obvious that this is a Vlog type video and there isn’t a reason to watch it if you don’t like that kind of a material. Some people (including me) do. I love spoony’s reviews but hearing Noah rant about movies/games is just as entertaining to me

      • Merost

“Dont like it dont watch it”? Are you retarted?? That argument is always stupid, but even more so in this context. We LIKE Vlogs, but we DONT like loud screamers causing us pain.

And because we dont know Screamers appear beforehand, we are still supposed to predict them and then….Yeah by this point you should have figured out yourself how stupid your argument war ;)

Regarding Sinister and the “Dumb White People”: The thing that bothered me the most is how neither the wife nor the kids were ever woken up by the cataclysmic detonations in the attic or his constant screaming, the only thing that seems to wake up this family is plot convenience to take care of the kid’s nightmares or move out in the middle of the night.

    • doresh

I thought that the helpful cop was gonna try to kill the family after i heard about “interduction into the cult” that was talked about during the skype chat. I thought he was gonna try kill the family and eat the child as his right of passage into the cult cause of his belive in ghosts, the way he acted at times, his interest in the case and the more screen time he was starting to get. When the dudes phone keeps ringing near the end and you see its him ringing i was like “i was right…he found out the family left to soon and hes gonna drop the dopey act and come for them” I guess i did’nt think the kids were killing there familys cause it seemed to easy ta spot. I asumed humans wanting to become part of the demons cult were killing familys and eatting the last child as there introduction. I was wrong lol

I read the comments here and I shake my head… Listening to some people it’s as though Spoony commited a crime agaisnt humanity or something. Are you telling me if one of your friend, as a dumb joke, did a ‘boo’ scare to you you would get so upset you would forever banish them from your house and never speak to them again? It’s a dumb joke but it hardly deserves that response… It’s a ‘boo’ scare ffs! You wet your panties and got your ego bruised, big flippin’ deal.

And gosh, if you thought this was obnoxious then stay a mile away from Half in the Bag review’s of PA4 and Sinister, the same gag is used a million more times than in Spoony’s vid. (and there isn’t nearly as much complaining in the comments as here, odd…)

(personally, I would bring it to police station filled with SWAT, let’s find out if that demon kid can withstand hailstorm of 9mm and 5.56 mm!) If you feel douche, you negotiate term of release with police people, (more armed people, better!) but the last thing I would do will be watch it unarmed and alone, just like a prey sitting on silver platter!

  • dm3588

I love horror movies. I haven’t seen these two, but I agree with a lot of what you said about horror, and I agree completely with regards to torture porn. And you recommend this “Audition” as an example of an excellent horror movie? Well, then, let’s go watch it!

I hate you. Why did you make me watch that? I think I understand what you meant by it going against what you said but earning it, but still, I didn’t get any actual fear from this. I got an hour of decent intrigue, 45 minutes of what is this I don’t even, and 15 minutes of my hands over my eyes cuz eww. You also recommended “Insidious,” which I haven’t seen either (I know, for a horror fan, I haven’t seen all that many horror movies); if I look that one up, is it actually going to be properly scary?

      • ShipoftheLine

Maybe its Spoonys new style? Maybe he himself has gotten sick of Reviews and Lets Plays, and now he sees TheSpoonyexperiment.com more as an “Video Blog”?

(And yes I know he writes on Twitter that he is working on Final Fantasy 13)

        • Morphman Morgan

I still see it as the experiment, he experiments with what works best for both the fans and himself, always trying new things, reinventing himself over and over again. For the past few months it’s been the unscripted Counter Monkey, where he picked a general subject and went on tangent after tangent for hours, which was awesome, now it’s more unscripted reviews about movies and games and why he feels that way. It might seem a bit vloggy, but I prefer to see it as really honest reviews.
His scripted stuff is awesome, but I think these vids are what makes me come back to the site daily.

    • MediaGold

A couple of weeks ago he promised the new review would be out before
Halloween. Today on Twitter he’s talking about having some technical
difficulties. Again. At least he wasn’t afflicted by some malady. Again. There are two things that are unmovable, unchangeable traits about Spoony: 1 he’ll NEVER keep a promise and 2 he will ALWAYS have an excuse.

      • Erebus_Locke

I dont care if he puts out something or not. I can do other things with my time, so I wont whine.

BUT: Seeing him Tweeting day after day how he is “working his ass off”, “pulling an all-nighter” “having not slept because of sooo much work” – and then continuing to Tweet stupid jokes and comments EVERY MINUTE FOR HOURS -_-

Buddy, when Im working “hard”, I dont have time to Twitter for six hours uninterrupted.

I couldn’t agree more about orchestra stings and cheap startles being stupid and annoying. The original japanese Dark Water is my favourite horror movie of all time because it builds an atmosphere of fear without jump scares. *SPOILERS* It even has one *sort of* jump scare with elevator doors opening and water unexpectedly bursting out of the elevator shaft. The thing is, there’s no sound besides the creepy-as-hell opening of the old doors and the rush of water. Love it and it still haunts me after 8 years of seeing it. I own it on dvd but have never gathered the courage to watch it again. Also, it’s just so damn sad in addition to being scary.

  • http://twitter.com/UndeadKusabi Cody Klein

Hey Spoony, have you thought about taking the audio extract of these vlogs and turning them into podcasts?

On topic, I found this all (barring the jarring screamer shit) quite apt to my feelings on both jump scares (which I can’t stand) and to horror movies in general. Nothing more to add, just felt like commenting on one of my favorite internet personalities.

  • Kydel Shaunson

    Spoony should really watch:

“A tale of two sisters” made in 2003 South Korea

It’s a really good horror film.

DO NOT WATCH the American remake :)

Screamers are one reason I have to laugh while watching horror movies 90% of the time. Laughing kind of prepares me for what’s to come so I’m not that scared when it happens. The other one is that they almost always break my suspension of disbelieve at some point. I’m not a horror fan and there is no horror movie in my top 50 movies list I’m afraid. BUT when I watched “martyrs” (a spanish film; not sure wether it classifies as horror) I couldn’t finish the movie. That was scary beyond all reason!

Anyway, what I actually wanted to mention: Those screamers undermine the format of your vlogs. You don’t want your audience to be tense the whole time, you want to get a point across. That’s what most people come here for I guess. I might have done the same though, just to fuck with everyone ^^

To be honest though, I had to read the comments to see when that 2nd Screamer was coming so I can watch the review without tension. Kind of proves my previous point too ^^

  • http://twitter.com/bta_man BTA

Don’t listen to anyone who says the first scare is 2 minutes in. It’s at about 1 minute and 20 seconds or so. I thought I could avoid it… I couldn’t.

to be honest i think a better end would be that the last film would be him sitting in the atic waching and the super 8 film slowely fills the hole screen then it sudenly rushes at him then it roughly cuts then it it shows his child infront of the camera with his/her finger to her mouth saying shhhh

    (Thunderclap) STOP!

I am the gate…..Painter! Son of the Gate-Cleaner and grandnephew (is that even a word?) of the Gate-Keeper!

Because of your sneaky snarky tactic of jump-scaring us, Spoony-One, you are now (thunderclap and lightining) BANISHED TO THE BLAG’OLE! There, you will review the other 3 origional “Nightmare”/”Atmosfear” VHS board games, as my father, the Gate-Cleaner, requested the other year! (Skronk)

Also, as an extra punishment, maggot! You will now also be forced to watch “50 Shades of Grey” and its sequels once they are released in the comming years! (Skronking laughter)

Your nightmare’s just begun, Spoony-one! (Laughs alongside the Gate-Cleaner and Gate-Keeper.)

This better not be “The Halloween Review”, because as much as I love your stuff I don’t care about blogs. You best not disappoint, you owe me because I’m a random person from the internet viewing your content. I hope it’s a game review as a well.

  • John Speigel

A thought occurs: I wonder how effective it would be if you replaced the orchestra string of a jump scare with a beat of silence. I mean, you’ve got fairly loud music or background noise going on when the jump scare happens, and then the instant of the jump scare, when there’d normally be an orchestra string, instead everything goes silent, but only for an instant. That could be unnerving and jarring in a whole different way, one that doesn’t smack of the “cheapness” of a sudden loud noise, although I’d have to see if in action to be sure. Does anyone know of any movies that have actually done this?

  • aroihkin

So I guess Spoony still has a few hours left to release his ‘scary review’ that he promised he was going to put out before Halloween…unless somehow this Vlog is supposed to be his review. I get the feeling that’s what he’ll claim when he doesn’t have a new review up on a deadline he himself gave. Again.

  • mgmccoy

I’m curious how you feel about the first Grudge movie? I felt like that movie had an interesting premise but the ghost was way to powerful. I just don’t understand why an almighty ghost would go through the bothersome action of terrifying people if it could just materialize in their bed and absorb them into the ether or whatever. It drove me crazy that this ghost would waste so much time creeping people out before it killed them because it could kill them without the scares.

  • http://twitter.com/Winterwander Miika Kuusisto

Spoony, honestly, those screamers are now 95% of the experience of viewing that video. I hate screamers. I can take them, yes, but I hate them. Just… seriously, maybe most of your audience will take those in good humour, but it still isn’t justified if it pisses off 10% of them or whatever. To do such a cheap thing in a vlog is just too cheap, way too cheap, no matter what the intention. Just disappointing really. Oh well…

    • Guilty Light

Not to speak for the guy, but…

I think a lot of people missed what I presume to have been Spoony’s point with the jump scares. That they aren’t scary, they’re -annoying-. The fact that so many people responded so negatively to them seems to kind of just reinforce his points. That and I figure he was just having fun with the fans. But sorry to hear that it irked you as much as it seems to have.

Fuck these lazy, long, sloppy vlogs. Edit some actual videos at a decent pace for once. This site has sucked for too long.. Spoony your movie reviews suck. Your strengths lie in riffing bad movies/videos and doing let’s plays, as well as edited reviews of classic nerdy games. Your taste in movies is abysmal so your opinion really doesn’t mean shit when it comes to contemporary reviews. I will stick to RLM and Brad for contemporary film reviews. I wish you’d focus mor eon what you used to do.

Ok I’ll happily give you the jump scares you purposefully put in Mr Spoony because you were using them to effectively prove a point…but whatever non-blip video site you’re using for these videos will not get off so easily because I had to sit though a SUPER LOUD ‘jump advert’ for the new Bioshock game at least EIGHT TIMES. And it was the same advert…every damn time. And there was no warning for people like me who were listening to your review while working.

And I thought blip ‘midverts’ were awful.

    Excellent reviews though :)

  • Edwin Oakfield

    The ending…Screamers… You suck…

  • labeth

Wow, Spoony. I could pretty much not agree more with everything you said during this vlog about what does and does not constitute good horror, even in the specific films you mentioned. I have not seen Infection, though, so I will have to check that one out.

The music in the last act is actually Gyroscope by Boards of Canada. If they used more of Boards of Canada, or kept a music style similar to it rather than the insistent string section, or silence as you said, it would have worked better.

Why do I imagine Spoony laughing maniacally after that second one? I seriously picture Noah chilling with his brother and being all like, “Dude, check this out… People are going to be so pissed… This is gonna be great.”

There are ways to fix Paranormal Activity 4 but it needs a 5th one. They need to introduce a group that is actively working against the demon. A group that switched Hunter at birth, a group who knows how to deal with this kind of thing.

The 5th movie, and there will be one, needs to have this group finally confront, and defeat, the demon.

    • Guilty Light

I really wonder what happened when they were writing the script for this one. The others were always a little subtle with the plot at times, but with PA4 I just can’t resolve so many of the threads of this movie’s script. I can’t figure out what was going on no matter what.

  • Guilty Light

Should I go back and see Insidious? What’s the Spoony community’s opinion on that one?

When I was seventeen I tried to give blood, I did the paperwork and they registered me in the system, when every employee at the blood bank had tried poking around that thick needle in my arm they had to give up. Apparently my vains are really deep and its hard to find one with a good blood flow. They called me up a couple of years later saying they needed my blood type so I tried again. When I showed up I told them about my vains so I got the most experienced nurse at the bank. She was very professional and it looked like she had done this a million times before… a few minutes later she was sweating and mumbling curses at my arm xD I doubt my arm hurt more than her pride. They kindly asked me to never come back and removed me from the system. So yeah that needle story seemed really beleivable to me.

    • http://twitter.com/RebornAleph Vincent Brooks

Do you have any problem with the word “goddamit”? Why do you type “GD”?

See, this is what I hate. “Oh my! We can never say bad words!” Frankly, what a stupid ideology. They’re just fucking words, buddy. Unless they are emotionally charged, who the hell cares if you say them? What’s the matter with you?

“GD”? Are you serious? What is this, fucking grade school? Cursewords are a legitimate part of every language on earth, whether you like them to be or not. Instead of worrying so much about words, how about worrying yourself over what makes them so negatively charged?

I am usually extremely eloquent with my opinions, and I seriously cannot describe just how bottomline stupid your entire argument is.

  • MattKerr

Spoony’s descriptions of atmospheric scares vs. jump scares rings true. Two years ago, a haunted house in my town was the best haunted house I ever experienced because it had rooms with atmosphere. It let everyone into the room, then did various things other than loud screams and shouts. One room had plastic roaches on the wall, then dumped translucent confetti on us that made our minds instantly thing bugs were being dumped on us. Another room had a hidden figure sneak up on us while we were looking around, then just waited for us to notice her. It was perfect, unlike a haunted house I went to this year that just had people shouting loud at the first person in the room without any real attempt to be atmospheric and scary.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cameron.hamer.129 Cameron Hamer

ow, that was bad. I had my head phones off and I have incredible built in speakers, but Spoony could barely be heard from across the room. THEN the screamer showed up and I’m pretty sure the other side of the house could hear it.

i was watching the sinister video and i was like . . . he has nice eyes.

  • Adrian Larson

Couldn’t agree more with the Sinister review. Great movie, but the abuse of music hurt it. No music, and PROPER music, create atmosphere that you can’t get through jump scares. I was losing my MIND in those recordings of the murders. All you had was an ambient background noise, and the scenery.

And you filled in the rest as the viewer. The sounds. Are the families whimpering? Telling their last words to each other? Calling for help?

Once I get this on DVD, I think I’m going to mute most of the movie. Should help a lot.

    • Adrian Larson

Some of the “dumb white person” points can be poorly explained by Ethan’s character. He was aiming for another great hit like his book from like a decade ago. So of course he is going to put off telling the cops about this murder investigation and his new finds. His last “hit book” was one that solved a case the cops couldn’t.

As for the rest, can I ask one thing? Are the rest of the family DEAF? When Ethan is in the attic and the Sky is literally tearing apart with the sound of Odin sneezing, why are the other family members NOT awake? Why is it always Ethan acting like he’s a Bad Mofo?

  • Joseph Frank Perez

Japanese horror like One missed call scare the hell out of me so I see where you’re coming from.

  • http://twitter.com/opheliamlet Ω♁

i’m surprised that PA4 didn’t try the whole “switched at birth” route with that bullshit twist of theirs — at least THAT would have covered one plot hole, and still be stupid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/peter.cacciatore.14 Peter Cacciatore

I completely agree with what you said about PA4 (didn’t care for Sinister). The only thing I can’t fully agree with you is my house has five computers and a kinect in it. Having that many computers in one family house is probable. We have that many because my father works for IBM, that’s one of the side effects. The rest of what you said I completely agree.

  • http://www.facebook.com/zbyszek.malec.9 Zbyszek Malec

Spoony, have you seen Tetsuo: The Iron Man? It is a Japanese horror movie which is quite surreal and scares you with altered reality and not jump scares or buckets of blood. It was one of the most horrifying experiences in my life.

    • gallowsCalibrator413

First one startled me really bad, *again*. By the end the audio and video were so unsynchronized that the jumpscare pictures showed up before the loud noise… didn’t get me as bad that time

  • Teaparty

Awesome videos, I love how passionate Spoony gets about these things ;D Thank you for the tips on great horror movies, btw, I’ll be sure to check some of them out!

  • Matthew Sperry

So, uh….having kinda a weird problem here. In standard definition, the first part video is Paranormal Activity 4, but when I switch to HD, it becomes an entirely different video, the Sinister video. At first I thought I was jumping to different parts as I switched videos, but…nope. Doesn’t seem like it. Same time, different things being talked about. Weirdness.

As the standard def version(for me at least), has crappy audio and lag, that’s kinda annoying. :B

I mean I can probably find it elsewhere to watch the first part in decent quality, but I figured might as well leave a message so that the problem can hopefully be fixed.

  • Matthew Sperry

Well, reposting this since apparently I’m a derp and forgot to verify my email first. If it somehow did go through twice(I’m not seeing the first one now), I apologize.

Anywaaays…I went back to watch this video, and noticed kinda a problem: The SD and HD versions of Part 1 are two entirely different videos!

After trying to watch the SD version and getting annoyed with the low audio quality, I switched to the HD version…and it’s totally different. I made sure I was at the same times, but well…the HD version is the Sinister part 2, and not actually the PA4 part 1.

So, just figured I’d leave a comment about it, in case it’s something that can be fixed. x3

  • bloodshed113094

Part 1 is sinister and Part 2 is PA4. Just in case you can change it.

  • ZorroAK

I love how passionate you get, and I love how *extremely* nitpicky you get – as long as I agree with you. (Because I’m just the same, to the dismay of my friends.) When I don’t, however, it annoys me to no end. ;-)

But see, Audition is a good example of how there’s just no accounting for taste. Audition was one of the most boring films I’ve had to sit through recently because of a recommendation – namely yours. Which is strange since we agree most of the time when it comes to movies.

As far as Paranormal Crapfest 4 is concerned, we could’nt agree more, down to the last detail. Sinister? Well, mostly.

  • MayMay

For some reason, these kinds of vlogs are my favourite, the ones where you really get in depth with, well, the nature of things!

  • gallowsCalibrator413

Oddly, after the Part 2 vlog ends, it reloads and tries to show one about Riddick.
That said, I very much agree with your review of Sinister. I *started* to disagree, until I imagined it WITHOUT the jump scares, and it looked a lot scarier in my mind’s eye. Definitely gonna try Audition :)

Jump scares, yeah – way overdone. Realized I do in fact start to disengage with those movies by a certain point, just get bored and want to turn them off…but I never understood WHY until I thought about it now.
